My husband and I decided to try this place, and I can't believe it took me almost 32 years living in Redwood City to finally come here. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted very warmly and were seated right away. The atmosphere was great and the service was quick. Our waiter was amazing and very attentive throughout the whole meal. I started with the sopa azteca, and it was absolutely delicious. It did need just a tiny bit more salt, which I added myself, but other than that it was great. The spice level was perfect, and the cheese, chicken, and avocado all came together so well. It was honestly such a comforting soup and it made me so happy eating it. For my main dish I had the carne asada. The steak itself was very well seasoned and very delicious. The only thing I didn't love was that it came completely covered in black beans. It was a bit too much and made the plate look a little unappetizing at first. But once I started eating it, the flavor of the steak was really good. The guacamole on the side was great, and the rice was okay. You could tell they probably used canned tomatoes, but it wasn't a deal breaker. My husband ordered the camarones al chipotle, and those were amazing. The sauce was incredibly flavorful and really delicious. They also bring out chips with a trio of salsas, and the roasted/charred salsa was so good that I basically ate it all myself and didn't even share with my husband. If I had one critique, it would be the drinks. My husband ordered a Paloma, and he said he could barely taste the alcohol -- it mostly tasted like juice. For the price, we expected a little stronger drink. Overall though, we had a great experience. The food, atmosphere, and service were all really enjoyable, and I would definitely come back again to try other dishes. read more

This restaurant is centrally located on Broadway facing the Redwood City History Museum. We stopped by after attending the Dia de los Muertos celebration. It was packed but the wait to be seated was less than 30 minutes. They gave us free chips with 3 types of dips ranging from mild to spicy. All were delicious. We ordered two signature dishes: Pollo Guajillo and Pescado Negro. Both were creamy. The pollo Guajillo reminded me of chicken tikka masala, in a good way. The pescado negro was fish sauted in chile negro and served in white heavy cream. We loved both! Tortillas were free but you have to ask for them. read more

This place is really lovely, the food is delicious, it is definitely upscale Mexican food, but the quality is worth the price. Definitely make a reservation, gets really crowded and is very popular. I don't know why this place is as low rated as it is. I had dismissed it until we were walking by and saw the ambiance was so inviting. It made us want to go in. We got seating very quickly which was important as we had 2 little kids. The service was quick and efficient. Now this place is expensive however, it was worth every penny. They got us chips and dip. The dips were all on the spicy side. I would have liked something a little more mild. However for the main courses: We got the kids cheese quesadilla. They really liked it. It came with sour cream and guacamole which was fresh and tasty. For the adults we got an enchilada and tostada combination which was amazing! Some of the best I have tasted. My husband got the Rajas Poblanas which was something I had never tasted. It blew our minds with the flavor profile. The rice and beans were also a great complement. I'll definitely be going back. I recently had dinner at Quinto Sol and was impressed with the ambiance, friendly service and amazing food. The restaurant is conveniently located in downtown Redwood City, right by the theaters making it a perfect place for a pre/post entertainment meal. There is lots of natural light, ambient lighting and natural minerals in the restaurant which makes very beautiful. Our server Uri was exceptional. He went above and beyond to ensure that our meal and dining experience was a 5 star experience. He was friendly, attentive and went out of his way to make sure that our dinner was prompt and delicious. He made many vegan recommendations and was happy to modify the vegetarian burrito. I ordered this with chipotle salsa and it was amazing! The vegetables really were quite delicate and the rice was flavorful. I preferred the mashed black beans to typical refried beans and I could tell how fresh all of the ingredients were. I really appreciated the thorough descriptions of the dishes on the menu. Food was good but average not extraordinary. The Avacado Guacamole can be better. It was not the typical green you see and again I may be off in quality wise but it was ok in taste. 3. We visited Quinto Sol for dinner on a Wednesday, having made a reservation for our party of 8. The interior was very spacious and decorated with star-shaped light fixtures, a large Mexican flag, and a tree wrapped in sting lights. The ambiance was casual but festive. For drinks, I got a Lemonade, which was pretty standard, but they had an entire Margarita Menu. My friends said the Margaritas were excellent, especially the X-Rated. We got two orders of Guacamole Fresco for the table, which was so good. It came with a large basket of tortilla chips, and had the perfect consistency. For my entree, I got the Chicken Enchiladas Al Sol. Unfortunately, this just wasn't very good. The enchiladas had two sauces - half mole and half guajillo. The guajillo was the better of the two, but neither could compensate for how dry the chicken was. The portion size was generous, but I only finished half the dish, because I just wasn't loving it. I would probably stick to just drinks and snacks next time. Fast and friendly service though! read more

This is one of our favorite Mexican Restaurants every time we get together in San Mateo. It's in Redwood city. The only thing negative about this place is to find a parking space. Most of the street parkings are closed off due to being worked on. I had to park 2 long blocks away and walk in the cold and light rain LOL. Anyhow, the restaurant is nice, high ceiling and quite big. The hosts are quite pleasant and helpful. We had to wait for all members of our party showed up to be seated even with reservation. The place is quite noisy from birthday parties to just plain get together like ourselves. The appetizers are quite tasty, we liked the nachos, guacamole, very rich and filling. The chips are light and crispy with 3 dipping salsa dishes. My Margarita was quite good although they only offer on rocks and not blended. Let me warn you, the dinner plates are very big, if you have the appetizer, it's better to order a la cart instead of the whole combo plates of any kind. You'll be taking some home for lunch the next day. I ordered the fish taco plate, the fish wasn't breaded fried, not crispy like some other restaurants, but with all the veggies, quite tasty and no fish smell. The rice and beans were great, but it's big so I took the rest home for lunch. Everyone in my family ordered different plates and they're all huge and delicious from wet burritos, shrimps, salads, etc. The prices are a little high, average $30 a plate, but for the restaurants atmosphere, the area, I think it's reasonable. The important thing is the service is attentive, fast, pleasant and the foods are excellent, except the walk back to our cars on the street. I've been here twice and I do like it. After several visits to Quinto Sol, the overall consensus is the food is not that great with a few exceptions. Most items I've tried are pretty bland and lack flavoring. Most often a little added salt goes a long way but for the prices that you pay, you expect better flavor. Portions sizes are average. Now for the good stuff. The sopa azteca is very good and hearty, but the real stand out is the fish ceviche. It is consistently good, and while it lacks a little spice (for most of my friends) it's perfect for someone like me who likes a little kick without being overwhelming. The service is pretty good most days, but can be a little lacking when the place is very busy (like during summer downtown events). read more

This was one of the weirdest restaurant experiences in ages. Three of us walked in for a night cap 30 minutes before close and sat down at their gorgeous looking bar. We chose a few different desert wines from their menu none of which they had. We asked about a particular mixed drink which they could not make either even though they have a full bar. We ended up ordering a glass of Sangria, a glass of Pinot and just a cup of hot water. When we asked for the hot water, the bartender asked us dead serious if we want it with ice. We looked at each other and declined. We got our beverages including a cup of hot water and he added a lime to it only to be pulled back by the manager, having to dump the water then pouring water again from a small teapot on a plate. When asked what was wrong with the water, he said the water was "not good" and the new one already has lemon in it. My friend chuckled and said "they're going to charge for the water, that's why the teapot". Sure enough, within a minute we had the check in front of us $5 for "hot tea". By now we had tasted the sangria and it was old and the Pinot was served in a dirty and sticky glad. I asked for the manager to tell her about our experience and that if they want to charge us $5 for water, they should tell us ahead of time. She refused to come over. The bartender ended up taking the hot water charge off the bill and we tipped him for that. To the restaurant owners: you were going to close in 30 minutes and we walked in to spend $50 on two glasses of wine and were considering a desert. We left with a very sketchy impression, are unlikely to come back and were upset enough to write this review. Was it worth it? read more
