Always a top 5 for our fam and sadly we only get up here once every 6 months!! Always have a deep dish Detroit pizza!! This time we have pur fav the Philly!! ( what are some garlic butter sauce shaved roast beef mushrooms onion green pepper) Had Toasted Ravioli and they were fresh crisp and hot! Dusted in parm and the meat sauce was just the right sweet flavor. Seating, as always stated is very limited, and luckily a three spot wall bar spot opened as we were waiting!! We got "The Meat" STL style pizza. The name pretty much says it all - it is LOADED with meat! It has Sausage, Hamburger, Canadian Bacon, Pepperoni, and Bacon. Even with all of that meat, it wasn't as greasy as many other "meat" pizzas that I've had. It came out quickly and it had a perfect golden brown color. I was really happy with this pizza. I prefer "STL style" pizzas, but a lot of the other customers had the "Detroit style" pizzas, and they looked delicious too, so we may give one of those a try next time. Also, the salads looked amazing too. The staff were really friendly, the service was fast, and the dining room was clean and welcoming. We will definitely be back! read more

This building has been around forever! We have ordered to-go but never ate in and for whatever reason I expected it to be a dark, dingy, hole in the wall. It was not! It was bright and clean with a cute little dine-in area and a great patio with picnic tables We were with some of our group that does the Pizza Passport and since there were 9 of us we decided to sit on the patio. It was a perfect night for it and we really enjoyed sitting out there on a beautiful night. The counter person was wearing several hats but was friendly and efficient. I ordered water, soda, and chicken wings as an appetizer and she got that going and said she would keep our tab open. One of our group had ordered a salad and it looked great, so I placed an order for one for myself and my husband. We decided on a think crust sausage and pepperoni, and a Detroit style sausage and pepperoni. Salads came out, one with a house creamy Italian and the other with regular Italian. The were very good, just a basic salad but the croutons and dressing made it great. Our pizza arrived and it was HOT. I checked on the wings and they brought those out shortly. I had expected to eat two pieces of the Detroit style but after the salad and a couple of the Buffalo wings (crispy and delicious) I could only eat one. I love the thick dough and crusty edges of the Detroit style, and this was a good rendition. I will skip the sausage next time and go for full pepperoni, It wasn't bad but I like a more Italian style, and it seemed just regular. We had heard about the Detroit style pizza they serve here so it was definite go. We ordered the large delux, salads and chicken wings as I heard they were an experience to be had. Salads came first and the balsamic dressing on top was excellent. The Detroit style and wings came out together.....first the Detroit style. The best crispy crust ever and loaded with toppings . I loved the Detroit style pizza at Mama Mel's Pizzeria in the Lemay area of St. Louis. I ordered the DeLux small deep dish pizza and it came with some killer pepperonis, sausage, mushrooms and other veggies. Glad I went on a midweek night and only waited 40 minutes as opposed to weekends it can take over an hour I heard for the deep dish. The service can be as saucy as the pizza too since the night I went only one counterperson working to handle phones, taking orders, and pick up orders from customers. There's nothing much visually inside the restaurant that's engaging, but the patio outside looks great and would be nice on a fair weather night to dine. I saw nothing to recommend on the beer or wine list unless mass brews are your thing but it isn't mine so drank water, but I was there mainly for the pizza. I look forward to going back. read more

Today we decided to try their special pizza that they have for a limited time. It was pulled pork. You could have either pineapple, jalapeños, or banana peppers on it. We chose one half pineapple and the other half banana peppers. It was pretty tasty. For an appetizer, we ordered the hand breaded fried pickles. The best way to describe these are Perfectly Puffy Pockets of Pickles (say that five times real fast) These were different but very good. We were excited to try the Detroit style pizza. The wait on a weekend is minimum 1 hour, so just be prepared. The flavor of the pizza was different than expected and while it was burnt on the edges (I think it's supposed to be) it wasn't as crispy as expected. The dough in the middle was soft, so the kids liked that. Overall, it was good but I don't think we'll get it again. We'll probably get Jets next time. if you love Detroit style pizza, this is your place. I've been wanting to try this place for a long time because I always drive past it on telegraph. I had a friend coming to stay with me last minute and I wanted something easy and special because my friend is from the south and they had never had Detroit style pizza. Beware that it's going to take time to cook it's like 45 minutes for pick up but good food takes time to prepare. They also have a lot of cool little extras for sale in the lobby like gelato from the hill. There's lots of other things on the menu that look really delectable that I want to try. Toasted ravioli is on the menu also. But we got the pizza with three toppings I can't remember which toppings I got but I remember it was so good. We also ordered wings. We got the mango habanero which the lady who rang me up said was her favorite. That's my only complaint is there could've been a lot more sauce on the wings there was only a tiny squirt but I get it, this market is known for not being into spicy food. So ask for extra sauce if you like spice. I got a cup of their homemade ranch with it too. Great service is taking my order on the phone, great service when I got to the restaurant, looks like a nice place to dine in as well, great for families, casual but clean. We went, we picked up a to-go order, we ate, we LOVED it!! Had Mama Mel's for the first time last night after hearing such good things from everyone else. They have a special for a 16" pizza and wings and even though we really wanted to try the Detroit style, the St. Louis style was amazing as well! While in STL for a baseball we wanted to try a pizza joint in Little Italy and came across Mama Mel's. We called on a Sunday night an hour before close to make sure they were still taking to go orders, and were advised they still were. So when we called back once we knew what we wanted we were advised they were no longer taking orders. However after letting them know the previous rep advised they still were, they put us back on the phone with the original rep. She ended up apologizing for the confusion and said she could take our order. Upon arrival the place was busy, which shocked us considering they almost didn't take our order. But needless to say, our pizza turned out to be amazing, the crust to cheese ratio was perfect and the grated and shredded Parmesan cheese on it made it even better. Without a doubt, one of the best pizzas in the city. It doesn't matter if it's St. Louis style, New York style or whatever you like!! The staff is refreshingly pleasant and the store is amazingly clean and bright. If you plan to dine in, go early. There are only about 20 seats in the whole house but it's worth the wait. There are about 50 seats on the outside deck. This place is mostly carry-out and they are very busy. Wait times are surprisingly short and the pizza arrives at your table right out of the oven steaming hot!! Don't forget desert!! Mel's take home deserts are amazing!! The pizza is very good I think what I like most about it is that it has more of sauce compared to most pizzas. It seems like most businesses barely put any on at all. I got a SOBM Pizza . Sausage onion bacon mushroom pizza. Also got a beef and Philly pizza. The SOBM Pizza was delicious. I would like to eat the pizza is there some time aside to bring it home. If the crust was a little crispier I would give it a 5 stars. I give the pizza as itself 4.5 stars Beef and Philly pizza I give 3 stars. This pizza seem to be lacking ingredients. It was OK but could have been better. That's the first time I've been here so I was really impressed with the first pizza. I will be back in the future to try more pizza. Food is alright, service is a nightmare. 15-20 min for take out spaghetti and meatballs is pretty average I feel, I show up 25 min later "oh there still working on your order" okay cool i go to pay for my $10 spaghetti and meatballs, "oh sorry we need an ID for that" for spaghetti and meatballs with a card??? whatever, I pay and sit there for another 20 min. 45 min in total, it's like they didnt start my order until I got there and needed verification once I was there for $10 spaghetti?? Yelp led me to this establishment while working in the area. I opted for a sandwich vs pizza. I ordered the "Lemolian", which you may know as a Gerber (shaved ham on garlic cheese bread). The sandwich was $6.50, and came with 2 sides. I ordered the homemade potato salad, and onion rings. The meal was quite good, and I ate in a small room off to the side of the order counter. She had a steady stream of regulars come in for take out orders, and she knew them all by name. That tells you something, in my mind. She also has different specials all during the week.
