My family and I live across the river in Illinois, and we love dining on The Hill whenever we get the chance. One of our traditions is trying a different Italian restaurant each visit based on reviews and recommendations from friends. This time, our party of five chose Mama's, and for most of us it was our first visit. I got a reservation weeks in advance and was clear about what we were celebrating. Starting with the positives, our server was friendly and attentive throughout the evening, and the food was good. Every entree at our table was enjoyable, and nobody left disappointed with their meal. Unfortunately, the overall dining experience fell short of our expectations because of the atmosphere. We were celebrating a significant occasion and were seated in the basement dining area. The space felt very sterile, with white walls, white floors, and a white ceiling. It lacked the warmth, charm, and character that many of us associate with dining on The Hill. The room was also packed with large parties, making it quite loud. Rather than feeling like a special night out, the atmosphere reminded me more of a banquet hall or VFW gathering than an Italian restaurant known for celebrations and family traditions. For me, great dining is about more than just the food. While the meal itself was good, ambiance, setting, and overall experience matter too, especially when celebrating something important. Based on this visit, I wouldn't recommend Mama's for a special occasion, and I don't see myself returning. Good food and friendly service can only carry an experience so far when the atmosphere doesn't match the occasion.

While visiting St. Louis for a trade show, our group was looking forward to trying Mama's on The Hill after hearing several recommendations. I never actually saw the inside of the restaurant because one member of our party needed handicap accessibility, and unfortunately the entrance only had steps with no alternate accessible entry available. Thankfully, it was a beautiful evening and we were able to dine comfortably at one of the outdoor tables. Our server was kind, attentive, and very helpful throughout the meal. We started by sharing a few appetizers including the toasted ravioli, which St. Louis is famous for, along with calamari. Both were enjoyable and a great way to begin the meal. The meals came with bread, butter, and a bottle of seasoned oil for dipping, which was a nice touch. My entrée included a salad with a sweet Italian dressing that I absolutely loved -- honestly, I would have been perfectly happy eating a larger portion of just the salad. For my main course, I chose the veal parmigiana. The flavor was good, although the veal itself was slightly tough, and the pasta side came with shells rather than traditional spaghetti. To finish the evening, we shared tiramisu and a cannoli for dessert. Both were enjoyable, but the cannoli definitely won the flavor battle for our table. Overall, despite the accessibility concern, we enjoyed the experience, the service, and many parts of the meal.

Respectable Americanized-Italian restaurant on The Hill... I was in town for work with the ole ball and chain, and we met some friends at MOTH for dinner on a Friday... Quint lil restaurant nestled in the middle of the STL Italian district. The restaurant looks like a big Italian family room and smelled like my G-Ma's kitchen. The staff super super friendly and accommodating. As for the food, it was solid Italian but I wouldn't call it "authentic", but more Americanized Italian fare (albeit the toasted raviolis were as good as advertised). We really like that the staff didn't rush you... Good pacing with dinner and no pushiness to turn tables. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was the price... $250 for 4 people is expensive regardless of it being STL. While I still contend Gian-Tony's is the best Italian restaurant OTH, MOTH was good and offers an enjoyable dinner experience with friends and family... It's easy to see why they've been a successful family run business for so many years.

Let's start by saying we came without reservations, put our name in and waited 35 min when they said 30-45 min wait, I went to the front desk to ask how much longer and they informed me they texted me when I received no text. Finally after showing them no text came through, we waited some more before being seated. The place was like a cool old house feel. Smelled amazing inside. Toasted ravioli was really great. The pasta and chicken was okay, not bad. The sangria was good and our waiter was nice.

The home of the toasted ravioli. Very busy place. Recommend making reservations, even with reservations we still had to wait. The place looks deceiving at first and kind of small but they have a downstairs room as well. They make a very good lemon drop martini, not too sweet not to tart. Typical Italian food. Being from NJ/NY area we wanted to try and compare. It was pretty good! Their vodka sauce was a little more spicy than what we get back home but it was good. The tiramisu had a more chocolate taste as home has more of a coffee taste. Overall still good and would go back if we were in the area.

We had a great date night at Mama's on the Hill on a Friday evening. We made a reservation and were seated promptly, which set a nice tone for the night. To start, we shared the Burrata Pomodoro and the toasted ravioli (since it is the home of toasted ravioli). The burrata pomodoro was outstanding--fresh, flavorful, and easily the highlight of the appetizers. The toasted ravioli was also very good and definitely worth trying if it's your first time. For entrées, I had the chicken piccata and my husband ordered the lasagna. Both dishes were delicious and well prepared. I also tried the vanilla latte martini, which was a fun variation on an espresso martini and something I'd definitely order again. Service was attentive without being overbearing, and the restaurant itself felt clean with a pleasant, relaxed ambiance--perfect for a date night. Overall, we had a really nice experience and would absolutely return.

Picked this place to show my non-STL bf what the Hill is & because some place I saw that it was flagged as Sicilian and he is. We started off with the meatballs which were really good in terms of meat taste, red sauce and the cheese on top. He got chicken Marsala because it's not something common on the menu at Italian places where we live and he was really happy with it. I had the carbonara which was also good. We both did the menu recommendation for the wine pairing and were happy with our choice. Service was good. Only downside really was our seating. The restaurant wasn't overly busy on a Thursday night and we had a resy but got seated in a weird table right by the front door that had one seat in the corner (and no room next to it for another). Would have just preferred something where we weren't crammed in & a ton of people walking by (bec servers were in & out a fair bit for outside patrons.

I was told this was the best of The Hill and I was not disappointed. My group had a choice of either outdoor patio dining or inside without having to wait. It was a bit chilly, so we opted for indoor seating. Zach was our server and was very personable and knowledgeable about the menu. My group decided to partake in family dining by sharing apps and entrees and I was so glad that I got to try so much of the menu that way. The bread that was brought out as a starter nearly toppled my chance of trying other food items because it was so good. It was soft with a tender crust. It was accompanied with some oil and Parmesan and enjoyed the dipping experience. The toasted ravioli were prepared expertly with just the right amount of crisp and the filling was oh so savory with a pinch of sweetness. The sauce was smooth and tasty too. The meatballs were nicely sized and topped with cheese and served with the absolute best pita type bread that was brushed with butter and seasoning. I could've lived off of that alone. I ordered the spaghetti with salsiccia to "play it safe" and I found the sauce to be very delicious with a little zest. The salsiccia is served uncut and provides a nice balance to the sauce. Finally, the absolute star of the show was the roasted red pepper ravioli. It was splendid with the cream sauce and peppers. The raviolis were soft and cheesy. I look forward to returning for more raviolis, the fantastic pita bread, and something new.

This was good eating! My family and I went on a Monday night and it was actually pretty busy. We didn't have to wait but I was shocked at how many people were there. That shows how good this place is! It's a bit dated inside but I feel that adds to the appeal Our server was amazing and super accommodating. My husband and I ordered the meatballs for an appetizer and they were by far the best ones I've ever had! So soft and flavorful and the sauce was chef's kiss. We also ordered the lasagna and split it. That was a perfect choice, it's huge!! It was sooooo good! I'm still thinking about it! You can't for wrong here!

I've been craving a true vodka sauce pasta for months, and this absolutely delivered. After dealing with a house flood and being without a kitchen for nearly three months, this meal honestly felt therapeutic. The sauce had the perfect consistency... creamy, rich, and with just the right amount of kick. I skipped the peas, added a meatball and paired it with the recommended Koha Sauvignon Blanc. Easily the best vodka sauce I've had in St. Louis! Already dreaming of the day we meet again. We sat on the patio and had wonderful service with Connor. Music was great, bread and oil was fantastic and they were able to seat us and get our food out to us so quickly even at 7 pm on a Wednesday.

Mama's on the Hill is a true local favorite. It's always filled with energy and packed with regulars, and for good reason! Their toasted ravioli is hands down the best I've had in St. Louis (don't hate me), perfectly crispy on the outside, warm and gooey inside, and that cheese is just divine. The sauce is rich, and every bite is a crunchy, cheesy delight. I also tried their tortellini, which was just as impressive. It was filled with flavor and so fresh. I can't forget to mention how welcoming the staff were, I was ordering to-go and the bartender was super sweet to chat with even though he was really busy. It's the perfect spot to dine with family and friends.

    Classic Caesar Salads

My wife, daughter, and I went to Mama's on the Hill after an evening visit to the Saint Louis Art Museum. This was our first time visiting the restaurant. We've driven past it many times over the years but had never stopped in to grab a bite to eat. We arrived around 6:15 p.m. on a Friday night and were seated right away. The place was packed, so it felt like we arrived at just the right time. My wife started dinner with a glass of Riesling, and I kicked off the evening with a Peroni. The restaurant has a very nice, cozy atmosphere that immediately made us feel comfortable. For dinner, my wife decided to try their pizza, my daughter ordered a large Classic Caesar salad, and I went with the Linguine Gamberetto along with a small Mama's House Salad. The waiter and serving staff were very attentive--refilling our water glasses, making sure we had plenty of bread and butter, and checking on us about every 7-8 minutes. I was very impressed with the service. The house salad was excellent, with fresh greens, cheeses, pimentos, onions, and a balsamic vinaigrette dressing that was very tasty. The Linguine Gamberetto included jumbo shrimp, fresh spinach, basil, and a squeeze of lemon in a light white wine sauce. It really hit the spot for me. I also tried a small piece of my wife's veggie pizza, which was very good. It's a classic St. Louis-style pizza with a thin, cracker-like crust and fantastic cheese. It actually reminded me of going to Rigazzi's about 40 years ago--back when we'd grab pizza and drink a fishbowl. The cheese sticking to the roof of your mouth brought back some great memories. My daughter mentioned that her salad was one of the best Classic Caesar salads she's had in a long time. Overall, we had a great experience, and we'll definitely be coming back to Mama's on the Hill.

Solid experience for lunch on The Hill! We sat on the patio and were the only ones out there- the inside was packed. They have an overhang on the patio and fans, which helped with it being a little toasty. We ordered the toasted ravs and they were amazing, truly cannot go wrong with a toasted rav. It was a great way to kick off the meal. I also had a salad and I loveddd their house vinaigrette! Truly so good. For my entree I had the penne primavera which was super good! It had a variety of veggies in it and was tossed in a pesto butter sauce. Pasta isn't what I would consider a light lunch, but it was a lighter choice. Our server was attentive and helpful. I'd return for sure, I'd love to try their spedini next!

The inside has a large wrap about bar and some limited seating. There is a very good selection of wine and mixed drinks and an okay selection of beer. The prices are reasonable. There is a very limited food menu which largely consists of snacks rather than proper entrees. So this is a great pre/post drink spot rather than somewhere you would spend an evening. The bartenders were fine. Nothing stood out either in a good or bad way. The mixed drink my wife had was very good. The orange wine I had was good, a bit on the dry side but overall no complaints from either of us. Without a highlight of the spot is the large patio. It is mostly taken up by large bench style seating. So you have to be okay sitting next to strangers. I actually enjoy these types of settings and I ended up chatting up the group to our right. There are a couple tables but they are few and far between. There are some overhead canopies and lights, and there was a nice vibe and energy. I was there and it was crowded. I really enjoyed it. Just two additional things to note. The bathroom line was very long. It must only be one stall. The entire time I was there it was a dozen people deep. The only other downside is that my wife and I felt old. The vibe on a late(ish) Saturday night was mainly 20 year olds. If I was in grad school or a recent graduate I would absolutely adore this place. Even if your 30s this probably is a good vibe. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone and can't wait to return.

Versatile, knows…read morehow to treat yo' self, equally at home in yoga pants, ready for a backwoods adventure or dressed to the nines, and doesn't blink at any version of you that walks through the door. That's the vibe. We started on the front patio on a Friday night and quickly realized we'd made a mistake. The doors to the interior were open and the music -- a rock-forward playlist that night -- was loud enough that we considered bailing. Our server, was unbothered when we asked to move up to the rooftop. Where we met with a new bartender and server, London, who rolled with it, got us resettled, and from that point on the night was great. London was clearly handling the bar and most of the rooftop tables, but she was attentive throughout, and made eye contact, which seems a near miracle from many 20-something these days. Bumping the score up just for the flexibility on the table move alone. The food: crab cakes were genuinely good, not life-changing, but well above the weak-crab-cake bar that exists in most of the world, served simply with capers and a small salad. I went off-script and ordered the wagyu burger medium rare with fontina (London mentioned cheddar is the more common pick, but the Fontina offerd a great alternative). The burger was deeply flavorful and cooked exactly right, but here's my one real note for the kitchen: toast the brioche bun. Wagyu medium-rare puts out a lot of juice, and an untoasted bun loses its structural integrity about three bites in. A quick toast would let the bun keep some additional integrate and keep up with the perfectly cooked beef. The pom buff were great, the best elevated patato tots you may come by. Beyond what we ordered, the Greek salad is a longtime go-to -- chopped, with grape leaves and pita, available in a small or large, and easily dressed up into a light meal with or without adding some protein or can be share as a self-dress bruschetta appetizer for the group if you ask for extra bread. The cheese boards are also a reliable pick. The wine list is extensive (it's a wine bar, after all), but they don't sniff at cocktails -- I had a solid fine old fashioned, and my wife shared had a Malbec that paired well with everything. Lots of gluten-free options across the menu, too. What Sasha's gets right is that it has refused to become precious. "Wine bar" reads as pretentious to some people, but this place runs as a neighborhood spot. You'll see college kids dressed way down, couples on dates dressed way up, Hawaiian shirts, oversized sweaters, the full range. It's the kind of place where you can split a bottle with your girlfriends, meet a date for drinks and a quick bite without committing to a full dinner, or roll in for brunch on the weekend. Different times of day, different vibes -- always approachable. 4.7 stars. Loses a few tenths for the front-patio music situation and the weak burger bun, but more than makes up for it on flexibility, food, and overall hang factor.

Used to love this place, but today really changed my impression…read more We stopped in for a quick drink on a beautiful Saturday. There were a few open tables, but we were asked to wait by the door while they "got situated." Meanwhile, a walk-in who arrived after us was seated at a table we had been waiting for. When we were finally seated, we were placed in direct sun. I asked if we could move to a shaded table in the corner and was told it was only for parties of three. After explaining we'd just be there briefly for a drink, we were allowed to sit there, but the interaction felt dismissive. From that point on, the experience felt rushed. We were pushed to order quickly, our menus were taken right away, and the check came almost immediately. It made what should have been a relaxed stop feel uncomfortable and transactional. I understand how busy restaurants can get, especially on nice days, but a little more consideration and courtesy would have gone a long way.
