Our group of 6 dined here on a Friday evening prior to an event across the street at the Opera House venue. Service was excellent and we were able to enjoy a leisurely dining experience from start to finish. We each ordered various menu items of tacos, burritos, quesadillas, salads, nachos, tortilla chips, salsas, and margaritas and everyone was very complementary and would return for repeat visits when in the area. Prices were a terrific value for quality and quantity of food items. I personally had the tacos pescado with option of flour tortillas instead of corn. These were delicate grilled and seasoned tilapia filets nestled in with shredded purple and green cabbage atop and 2 accompanying sauces to drizzle per preference. The plate also included white rice with a smattering of diced vegetables for appealing color and texture as well as a small green salad topped with avocado slices, tomato, cucumber, and a couple of lime wedge garnish for the tacos. I also want to add that I was VERY impressed with the extensive and authentic large menu!!! Menudo, pozole, octopus, and so many items that knocked my socks off. Noise level mild to moderate as the dining areas filled on a Friday evening. It was an easily accessible property from the corner of Short Street near the parking garage. I came in on a Tuesday and stumbled upon 2 for 1 margaritas which was a pretty good deal for $10. I paired this with the guacamole which was okay. Nothing to write home about but a good snack with my drinks. It was super dead in here, when I left I was the only table. My server was attentive at first but then kind of vanished and I had to go and find him. Overall, good value. For $21 I got two drinks and chips, salsa and guac. read more

Mama Tequila was a nice surprise. Food was good and fast. Mavi Z was welcoming and friendly. We asked for the spicy salsa and Mavi brought us 4 types of spicy salsa. Food was fresh. Chips were warm. We ordered 2 aguas fresca. Horchata and Jamaica ( hibiscus) these aren't free refills. My red enchiladas were good. My husband had the tacos de carne asada with beans also very tasty. Extremely poor service, ridiculous to pay for entry to be ignored at the bar for 20 minutes and watch people all around getting to order. Rude bouncer shoving the entire time while I'm trying to order because they decide to give over half of the bar space for girls to get up and dance? I'm all for having a party and a good time, but customer service should be your priority. Your bartender should know the order people come up to the bar, and should also not be drinking protein shakes while actively making and stirring people's drinks. Was really excited to come after hearing lots of good things, but I would not recommend. read more

After spending the day at Lexington Comic Con, a group of us were wanting to try something new. We stumbled upon Mama Tequila and thought it would be worth a shot. The inside of the restaurant is gorgeous. Everything is decorated in flowers, vines and neon signs. It's very Instagram worthy. They have a big menu so there is something for everyone. I went with the esquites and fries while my husband got a burrito. Both of us loved the food. It was a little on the pricey side but at this day in age, are you surprised? We almost made a mistake and didn't go to this place since their website mentioned a "nightclub". We would have missed out one a fantastic meal. The complementary chips and salsa were definitely homemade - and as delicious as the main course. My friend had a Burrito Tricolor, which was humongous. I had the fajita Camaron. The prices for our meals and drinks were much cheaper than expected. Although the restaurant has a patio to dine on, we chose to remain in the AC-coolef interior. We didn't look on every nook or cranny, but what we saw was very clean and well maintained. The staff was very friendly and prompt. I highly recommend this eatery. read more

Some friends and I wanted to find a new spot to check out for lunch, so we opted for Mama Tequila as it was right by the hotel we were staying at. One thing I was not expecting was for this place to be so dang pretty!! Colorful flowers everywhere, neon signs with fun lil' quotes... Very cutesy, very demure. Our server was so friendly and constantly checked on us. I kinda wished I would've been in the mood for alcohol during our visit, because they had so many cool drinks, including a mimosa tree! Attended a birthday dinner and was a great setting for that. The interior was very nicely decorated, actually quite great for photos. The space was expansive with plenty room for groups small or large, and it had a great fun vibe going. The one complaint I might have is that behind teh bar they had a projector going showing some TV and the game, and while the music volume level was nice they cranked the TV volume way too high to the point I couldn't even converse with the person sitting next to me. The service was friendly and prompt, prices were fair. The drink options were quite nice, full of some tasty options. 10/10--absolutely amazing! From start to finish, the experience was excellent. I eat birria tacos weekly, usually from taco trucks (which I love), but these being restaurant-made and still delivering that authentic, flavorful punch really stood out. The meat was perfectly tender, the consommé was rich and well-seasoned, and every bite was packed with flavor. On top of the food, the service was phenomenal--the waiter was attentive, friendly, and made sure I had everything I needed. I was told by a co worker this was awesome place for Mexican food with an authentic taste. My do worker was suggested biarria tacos when she dined in and I have been craving biarra tacos since I volunteered at Crave fest this summer. What I received is not what I expected. I use to the meat cooked with the tacos with cheese and being able to dip in the consommé. Not the case here with my pick up order. The meat was separate and it was more like a make your own taco. Make sure to get the pork ribeye à la Mexicana- the explosion of flavor is truly to die for. For dessert, make sure to get their flan. No little ramekin shaped soggy mess here. Mama Tequila is an interesting concept by the same folks that own El Rancho Tapatio. Mexican restaurant by day and then at 10pm converts into a full blown dance club. I was intrigued to try it out but finding a menu online was a chore as they don't really seem to promote their food offerings anywhere. If you are looking for basket after basket of chips and salsa you'll want to look elsewhere. Chips and salsa are on the menu but are a paid appetizer. I've saw other reviews mention lime margaritas but the menu we were given only had more upscale cocktails which was a bit odd compared to a menu of everyday Mexican entrees. Being a new restaurant they are still working out some service kinks but nothing that was an issue. While the food was good, it is likely a one and done for me unless I'm in the area for an event and just can't do without some tacos. Overall though it was nothing exceptional so not worth paying the downtown location markup on prices vs just going to their other location. read more

I've been here twice, this recent time for taco week and it's been decent enough. The ambience is good. Taco size was as expected and they brought them out fast. As it went into dinner time, they were slow about bringing the check, thankfully wasn't in too much of a hurry. It's downtown so have to pay for parking. The garage is right across the street though. Sat outside at Mama Tequila and tried the street tacos. The server was very friendly and recommended a tequila flight but we opted out of drinks. They had a good variety of tequila to try! We ended up getting the guacamole as an appetizer and the chicken and steak street tacos for an entree. They have a good brunch menu but I'm obsessed with street tacos. They were good but the salsa really elevated the flavor. They have a trio of hot salsa that I enjoyed! read more

My food had a hair inside of the chimichangas when I bit into one. The manager came over and said, "sorry, but hair is everywhere." They remade my food and it was not great. The bill was $45 for cheese, drink, and chicken chimichangas. Overpriced, especially with hair in my food. Overall beautiful ambience and great location. Walked in around 9pm on a Friday night and was seated promptly. Food and drinks were lacking in flavor though. I kept thinking "does this have salt?" My mango ginger margarita was fine as a cocktail, but really I didn't taste mango or ginger or even lime. The cerviche looked pretty but again needed lime and salt at least. If there was a negative score to give to Mama Tequila, I'd give it. I worked in bars and restaurants in high school and college, so I know what good service looks like. My friend and I who were celebrating a big deal ceremony at her grad school were seated at a table for less than an hour before the whole area around us was being cleared out and the club music came on - apparently it turns into a dance party at night. When we got there all the banquettes were empty except 2 - couldn't have thought to seat us there instead? The margarita was good. So was the salsa. The barbacoa in the flautas was over cooked. Our waitress (Arely) - remember the name and if you decide to go stay away from tables manned by the girl in the glasses - brought us to go boxes after a bit without asking, then came up and interrupted our conversation to ask if she could bring us checks. Fine. Rude but whatever. THEN, she brings checks, takes our cards, and comes back with her electronic POS. Puts a card in? Hands it to me with the tip portion exposed. I put in a tip only to realize she has brought me the wrong person's credit card. Not as in my friend's card, but someone's from ANOTHER TABLE. Friend checked hers as well - wasn't her card either. Turns out she had given my card to a diner at another table, he didn't check (we all had similar color cards and issuers) and they had to chase him down to get it returned. On top of all that? I wasn't comped a damn dime for the hassle and the extra 20 mins we had to spend there. My advice? If you're looking for somewhere with Mexican food downtown? Agave & Rye. This place? Run.
