Yesterday, my husband and I decided to try your restaurant for the first time. We were excited to give it a try. We chose to sit inside near the outdoor area where the live music was playing. There was no one else dining inside, only people sitting at the bar watching sports. Our waitress was sitting at a table next to where we chose to sit. She got up to take our order and then went back to sit down. We ordered a Caesar salad, but instead received a house salad with Caesar dressing. When we politely explained that we had ordered a Caesar salad and that we didn't mind paying the difference if there was an extra charge, her response was, "That's Caesar dressing." She later returned with the correct salad and said, "Is this better?" We were both surprised by the comment but simply thanked her and moved on. Later, I ordered a Diet Coke, but it arrived without ice. Rather than complain, I simply asked if I could have another one with ice. She replied, with what came across as an irritated tone, that they had no ice. I understand that everyone can have a bad day, and I try to be understanding. However, customers shouldn't feel like they're inconveniencing their server simply for asking for what they ordered. This was our first visit, and unfortunately the service left a very disappointing first impression. Went tonight to watch the live band Mark Thomas & The Essentials. They are FABULOUS!!! The staff at Mama Vesuvio's is on it. They are attentive, they are quick and they are pleasant and courteous. Had the dinner Caesar salad with chicken and it was fresh and delicious. Just the right amount of dressing and the chicken portion was generous. Also had the Mama's Special Pizza and let me tell you - absolutely head-over-heels amazing. Cheesy to perfection. The crust is thin, but has a great snap to it. Mama Vesuvio came up as one of the best Italian restaurants near me, so thought I'd give it a try. The ambiance was very, very old, but you could tell back in the day it must have been nice. The service was excellent - we were seated right away, our server was attentive, and didn't ever have to ask for anything. The food was very good. It was classic Italian, nothing fancy, just delicious. I had the zucchini parmigiana, which was perfectly egg battered, layered with mozzarella, and a nice tomato based sauce. The lasagna was layered and piled high with mozzarella, ricotta cheese and tomato sauce. What I did not like is that people were allowed to smoke in the beer garden where food was also served. We went to this restaurant again the other night there were five of us and everybody thought the meal was great. My kids shared a barbecued pizza and they loved it. My grandson had pasta and loved it. I had pan fried pike with a big heap of vegetables on the plate and a salad And brown rice and it was double what I could eat. The portion was so huge. I'm having it again tonight at work. My wife had mahi-mahi over brown rice with a special sauce and the same heap of vegetables I had and salad and she loved it. The waitresses name was Sophie, she was terrific and they had good coffee for ending the meal so I can't think of one to say about this place. Great meal great food great service. read more

The ambiance however, was very... old, bad old, it felt like I time traveled back to a hotel lobby from 1972. I ordered the spaghetti, and it was... definitely spaghetti, practically identical to the kind you can make at home for $2.50. What really set me off, though, was the dish it was served on; it was dirty, with little hard and crusty bits of sauce (mostly red, a little bit of white) along the rim and the bottom, I stopped eating once I noticed and since then I have not been back. Unless they have changed *drastically* in the past 3 years, I would not reccomend going here. read more

Terrible Easter Buffet. We've come here for a few years, but won't be back again. Food selection was paltry and quality was poor. I'm guessing this place will be out of business by next year. The dining room was nice. It has a fireplace and several tables. There was a Separate bar area and an outside tented area. The food was good. I had the chicken limon it was ok. The mozzarella sticks and pizza were very good. We had half pepperoni and half Italian beef. They were not stingy there was pepperoni under and on top of the cheese and lots of beef. My husband had the chicken Parmesan he liked it and my daughter liked her meatball sandwich too. The waitress was friendly and attentive. Mama Vesuvios left me feeling disappointed and undervalued as a customer. We came to see the band that was playing that night, but they did not have outdoor seating to accommodate our group. That is fine, since we didn't place reservations, but shortly after arriving we witnessed the person who I assume is the owner make special accommodations for a group much larger than ours. They brought tables outside, and the inconsistent treatment of customers, in front of our face, was inconsiderate and rude. We have been going to Mama's a few years. Food is always good. Love the Bocce Ball. This Sunday, I noticed the price on my check, for my meal, was $2 more than the menu price. When I questioned the waitress, she rudely said, "We have been doing this for months. You just noticed now" i understand restaurants are hurting, but I feel the customer should be aware the prices went up. A note on the face of the menu or white out and correct the prices on the menu. We had Thanksgiving dinner there. It was the best! The food was hot and plentiful. Served family-style. What you didn't eat, you took home. Besides turkey with all the sides, we also got ham. We didn't choose off the menu. It was just Thanksgiving. We had 3 choices of pie with whipped cream for dessert. They were busy and the staff were nice and kept things moving. Everything here was good but would not be a place I would go out of my way to go back to. The appetizers were all very good and hot. The salad was very plain and soups were very bland. The chicken in the chicken Parmesan was good but the sauce with the pasta was just mediocre. The Alfredo sauce was great but the chicken was a bit dry and tasteless. Nothing was horrible or would make me warn someone from goIng here, however nothing was all that great to warrant another trip here. A couple of my friends have been recommending this place for years. My husband and I finally found a free night and we stopped on by for dinner. The host sat us in the dining room, underneath the stain glass fixture. In no time at all our waitress took our order (I the veal parmigiana and my husband the chicken marsala). She was very courteous and precise. Since we usually don't go out that much we decided, what the hey, and ordered the bruschetta as an appetizer. The bruschetta was a little to garlicy for me, but my husband seemed to enjoy it (finishing my portion with a smile). After that we tried their bread salad that is unique to their restaurant. FANTASTIC!!! We ended up asking for some to go for our niece. Our two meals came after. Simply fantastic. I haven't had veal parmigiana like this in a long time. My husband seemed to enjoy his food, gobbling up every last bit before I could ask. For me at least,the portions were a little too much, but in a good way. We ended up taking whatever we couldn't finish to go. They had some tiramisu and cannoli, but we were too full, maybe next time. The bill was what we about expected, not too pricey, but we got more food then we thought we would. I can see why my friends have been suggesting this place over the years. In June we ordered a BBQ Chicken pizza and an order of Chicken Tetrazini for pick up. When we got it home, the pizza was fine but when I opened the tetrazzini, there was only sauce and NO PASTA! I called the next day to complain, they begrudgingly gave me a credit of $13.00. Yesterday we got a small BBQ Chicken pizza and a rigatoni dinner. They told me they were using my credit toward it. When we got home we saw on the receipt that instead of the small pizza being $12.95 like it says on the menu, they charged us $19.95! They did apply our credit only after they upcharged the pizza by $7.00.We will NEVER order takeout from them again! Very dissatisfied!!!! read more

We Went here for the 2 for 1 pasta. The food is good. Our waitress Heidi was very good and a good server. The woman behind the bar was a total different story. She was extremely rude, plain and simple. We came in the bar area entrance and did not realize we should have gone in the other entrance. We were immediately informed of our error. She also complained loudly to the people sitting at the bar that people should know the right way to come in . She did not like people coming for the 2 for 1 special. The hostess came up to us and she also proceeded to tell us our error and was also nasty. Several people committed the same mistake as we and were also chastised. Thank you to Heidi for being so kind. There is a very simple solution.... Put a sign on the door letting people know ... problem solved. An absolute disappointment. If I could give zero stars I would. Dining at Mama Vesuvio's East was like an episode from Gordon Ramseys Kitchen Nightmares. Upon arriving I noticed the carpet was dirty and littered with trash, several of the ceiling tiles showed significant signs of water damage and mold, and the menus were sticky with visible marks of food. There were many fruit flys and gnats hovered around while we ate. If we had not been meeting family there we would have got up and left. I ordered the lake perch which was soggy, cold, and fishy. Now before you go running over to this place for dinner expecting a 4 star experience let me explain. I have been coming here for years. Well at least trying to. My friends usually tell me no. Then ask what's wrong with me. There's a good chance you will be the youngest person in this place. I think the average age is between 75-85. I would not recommend the entrees at all. I'm still in love though. In the Summer they have a great outdoor patio with darts, bags and bocce ball. The pizza is solid and the drinks are cheap and strong. What's not to love? I've always had friendly servers and I personally love watching the crowd. If the weather isn't good they have an indoor bar where karaoke takes place (I believe Friday nights). There are some prime people watching opportunities here. I prefer hanging here with friends sometimes over the usual bar scene. We can order pizza, drink pretty cheap and people watch. If you're in the mood for that and want to try a different scene I say check this place out. read more

Honestly, finding real quality Italian on the south side is a task I abandoned a few years ago. Dated, that is the best term to describe this place. If you ever saw the movie Big Night this is the place across the street, well maybe not anymore. Due in part to lackluster food and an aging demographic the writing is on the wall unless some serious adjustments are made. A dish that has been stellar for ages is the Chicken Vesuvio, a greasy (in a good way) garlicky roasted chicken with roasted potatoes, very rich and flavorful. Well normally, on a recent trip the chicken has been downsized, it was never huge, probably 1/2 of a 3 1/2 pound bird, this latest version was puny. A chicken that was one meal past consideration of a game hen, with a drumstick that was slightly larger than my thumb. The skin had no carmalization to it and the sauce was very cloudy. Another dish I have enjoyed was one not on the menu, seafood in garlic and olive oil, but the most recent version of this dish while featuring an abundant amount of very fresh seafood (except for the weird tiny lobster tail?) was buried in more garlic than a Transylvania bound Train. Looked like about 10 cloves of minced garlic, just vile. An odd gesture is the free "bread salad", the epitome in redundancy. After ordering you get soup or salad with a basket of nice bread, then they bring you yesterdays leftover bread tossed with their house dressing and a smattering of peppers, onions and cucumbers. I am a fan of "panzenella" but this over dressed, overly sweet and pasty concoction is abysmal. If you like gnawing on raw stuffing Thanksgiving eve you may enjoy this. Another disappointment was the French onion soup, the broth was cloudy and weak, topped with a slice of toasted bread and grated low quality mozzarella it was not placed under the broiler. The cheese was left in its grated cold state to roll down the crouton into the lukewarm broth, a travesty as far as French onion soup goes. Playing it safe and cheep I opted for the spaghetti and meatballs, two beef meet balls on top of spaghetti and red sauce. I call it red sauce because there are no other defining qualities to the sauce. The pasta, slightly overcooked and the balls were over mixed, dense, pasty, salty and looked to be seasoned with either seasoned bread crumbs or dried parsley. Really crappy version of a staple in red sauce places. Ice burg lettuce salad was fresh and crisp. The place seems to have been decorated recently, but other than the shiny patina you would never guess. Their is an organ for some type of live music, a giant Tiffany like faux stained glass center piece in the ceiling, Roman columns in the walls, quite bizarre actually. I am surprised this place has managed to stay in business. I have been here a couple times and both times I was very disappointed. First time I went there I tried their lunch buffet. It was mediocre. Second time I tried their chicken sandwich and that wasn't too bad but not good enough to make me want to go back. The fries that came with the sandwich were bad. Their service is terrible. The name of the restaurant indicates Italian, but they have TVs all over the place like a sports bar and they have picnic tables with plastic chairs on their patio. They also have a bocce ball court so I don't know what type of customers this place is trying to attract. The menus are beat up and look very generic. I really don't have anything good to say about this place. I don't recommend it. Read a few of the other reviews and felt the need to add that their lemonade is awful.
