I arrived at Maman's Union Market location around 10:30 AM on a Saturday and the place was already packed with people in the upstairs, downstairs, and outdoor seating areas. FOOD I ordered "Papa's Breakfast Bowl," which includes roasted potatoes, sautéed kale, bacon, caramelized onions, avocado, chipotle aioli, and a sunny-side-up egg. I chose to skip the aioli and have my egg scrambled instead. I also ordered an iced coffee with a shot of espresso. After placing my order, I took a number and scouted out a table where I could settle in while waiting for my meal. I initially settled on a table on the second floor, but it was wobbly. I relocated to the first available table, which happened to be the first one at the top of the stairs. While this spot was less than ideal, it offered a bird's eye view of the first floor. My order was brought to me within ten minutes and I thoroughly enjoyed the healthy, satisfying meal. The coffee was smooth and flavorful. I consider it a good sign when I can drink my coffee black without any additives. ATMOSPHERE The atmosphere at Maman was lively, with pop music pulsing and a constant hum of conversation filling the air. While too loud for focused work, I noticed a few people using their laptops. Free Wi-Fi is available, so it might suit those who don't mind a noisy environment. Unfortunately, the unisex bathroom downstairs was in a less-than-ideal state, overflowing with trash. VERDICT I enjoyed my meal and the the pleasant service at Maman; however, the condition of the bathroom left much to be desired. Staff is still awful and clearly do not enjoy working here. Inventory of things like specific tea types will run out but they don't update the tea varieties sign with a small note. So you wait in line through the slow service only to be told they don't have the item when you get up there. If you're getting breakfast from Maman's hands down get their breakfast potato bowl. It's a good portion of food and the flavors are there. I went here because the ambiance looked nice but the experience was not great. I spent nearly $80 on two omelets that were extremely greasy and oily (we asked for them plain, but for some reason they were soaked in balsamic vinegar), potatoes that were soggy and cold and tasted like they were microwaved (different from the potatoes I've seen in others' pictures on Yelp), bacon that dripped grease, and the tiniest two pieces of toast. There were a decent amount of people working remotely inside. I ordered a seasonal item, the Sakura Blossom Matcha Latte and a coconut oatmeal cookie, along with a coffee with shot of espresso and almond milk for my brother. The matcha latte was delicious, it was light and floral. The cookie tasted like it's been sitting out all day, but I still enjoyed it. It had a thick and chewy texture, which I loved. The service is what made my visit a bit off putting. We were the only ones in line/ordering at the time and the cashier was unfriendly but nothing to complain over. When we went to pick up my drink the person making our drink was also unfriendly and presented us with attitude. When he called my name, he also gave me this weird disgusted look and I was just hoping it was unrelated to me? My brother's coffee did not include the almond milk and so he asks "may I have some almond milk added?" to which the worker replies, "say the magic word" and then my brother says "please?" - it felt very condescending and odd, but we just brushed it off. Katie's chicken sandwich is my go-to meal. I love it so much and make sure I get it every time I'm in town. The Paris-NY pastry is the best hands down. I wouldn't recommend the croissant cubes. They're hard to eat and kind of dry. Great atmosphere with nice decor. Can get loud on weekends. Servers are consistently efficient in taking orders but I wouldn't call them friendly. I just went here for the first time for breakfast and LOVED it! First of all, the decor is adorable. I love the flowers, the lovely blue and white tableware, the trellises - delightful. Maman is super cute French bakery that has location throughout the DC area. I went in the morning during a week day, and it was pretty busy with people meeting up for lunch or working from home. The aesthetic is very pleasing as you can see from the pictures. The seating choices across the restaurant is pretty diverse and well spread out - most of the tables are four seats or more. There's additional seating options upstairs and one side of the restaurant has like-lounging chairs were people can enjoy their coffees and lunches. Simply put this is my favorite breakfast/brunch spot. The aesthetic is rustic with antique mugs/plates if you're dining in. The service is quick. Now onto the food. The dirty chai latte was the perfect balance of the bitter expresso and sweetness of the chai. The presentation as well was cute and homely. While the papas breakfast bowl lacked spice it was a nice creation of potatoes, bacon, grilled onion, avocado and egg. When you think about it it's really hard to mess but, but again the presentation and execution was great. If you're in the neighborhood or just passing through. Today I got the chocolate cookie and she recommended I get the once fresh out of the oven and OMG they are so good! I live around the corner and have been coming here every weekday since it's been open. I always get a vanilla latté with oatmilk and it's always been delicious (and I'm picky). The first day I tried the food I had an omelette which comes with salad. Today I had an eggplant panini as recommended by my neighbor who said it was soooo good she already had it twice. Definitely will be going back, probably tomorrow. I always go in with my baby and her stroller. I like that there is enough space for us to chill. The decor is also a major plus. If you're looking for a better option for coffee/pastry in the union market area, Maman should definitely be on your list! I came on Sunday early afternoon and it was very busy. There was a bit of a line for me to order, and an even longer line when I left. I don't think it's the kind of place you go if you're in a rush or getting a coffee to go as it takes a bit of time to receive your order. For food, we got the ratatouille (only available on weekends) and club sandwich. The ratatouille was really delicious and flavorful and a good portion size. The club sandwich was good as well. I got an iced vanilla latte which was delicious, I saw they had some good looking seasonal drinks but I didn't see it until after I ordered at the register (I'll need to go back to try). We also tried a s'mores cookie which was the star of the show. It was pretty pricey for a "fast casual" kind of place, ~$60 for two people. The cons - very busy and finding seating was tough, even for two people. The couple of tables that were open had leftover food/drinks so we weren't able to sit there and ended up sitting on two stools at the upper level. It was also pretty hot inside, at least on the upper level. Food/drink takes a while but we weren't in a rush so it wasn't a huge deal but something to keep in mind. It would be good to have some napkins on the table or silverware on the upper level, I had to find a server for silverware/napkins after receiving my food. read more

With most cafes in New York City, the Union Market area of Maman is its third location in the D.C. area (there are locations in Bethesda and Georgetown). Open every day until 6 p.m., Maman bakes popular pastries (including an Oprah-endorsed chocolate chip cookie), creates dishes like quiche and smashed avocado tartine and brews Nashville-based Parlor coffee. I went on opening day where the long line shows how welcome D.C. is to Maman. My double chocolate latte cookie and latte were excellent. (My bill came to around $10.) A cool thing is that their coffee cups are decorated with art. One of their cups has art by a local artists while supplies last. The space is large and on-brand for Maman with greens spiraling up walls. There are seats along the windows, on the first floor and up in the second floor area that overlooks the first. It's industrial looking and stunning. There are two uni-sex restrooms in the back near photos of the owners as children. Using Verizon, I didn't get good reception inside and there's no Wi-Fi. Parking in the Union Market lot or under La Cosecha for free. There are two Capital Bikeshare docks nearby and the closest metro is NoMa-Gallaudet U station. read more
