Holy Empanadas!!! I am sooooo craving empanadas as I am writing this! Mama's is a chain that is all over the place but this is my first visit to the Astoria branch. We went there for a late, quick dinner last night and boy oh boy, we were blown away at how absolutely delicious the empanadas were. First, the menu caught us off guard. We're used to the typical cheese, beef or pork empanadas but this place has a HUGE menu! I have to admit, it was a little overwhelming, so instead of holding up the line behind us to explore their menu, we opted for two spinach and cheese; and two beef....with the extra spicy hot sauce (the green one). The empanadas and the hot sauce were AMAZING!!!.....either that or we were just way too hungry cause we wolfed those down and wanted more! I can't wait to go back to try some other items. Oh, and it seems that they make everything to order. We had to wait a little while for our food, but we didn't mind since the food is so fresh and tasty. The staff was super patient, informative and so friendly! I'm always the first to complain that there is no such thing as customer service these days, but Mama's is the exception! 5 stars for Mama's, which is easy to dislike because the people behind the counter are joyless and the space is dirty/unpleasant. But ohoho, the empanadas. I've sought out empanadas at Colombian mom and pop bakeries, Buenos Aires holes-in-the-wall. Somehow I keep coming back to these - no doubt produced in an industrial kitchen in Maspeth or something and trucked over to Mama's shops to be fried to order. Choose between a wheat or corn shell. For the wheat ones, you can get them fried, or baked for 10c more (which is funny because the fried tastes so superior). I'm all about that deep fried masa though, which is more Venezuelan in spirit. Either style, the shells are always crisp, steamy, and fantastic. Make sure you eat them fresh out of the fryer. You can find standard chicken and beef fillings, as well as creative varieties like Greek, cheeseburger, Hawaiian, veggie, and sweet dessert options. After trying a bunch, I'm hereby declaring the best to be the black bean and cheese (corn shell, vegetarian) and the jamon y queso (wheat shell, fried). Nothing crazy, but both done so well. For sauces, you can choose between vinegary "red," creamy "rosado," or "hot" (aji verde/green sauce). Obviously go for the "hot," which is the spiciest (but still only mildly spicy). You get one little cup of sauce per 2 empanadas - any more and they charge you 25c per cup. Prices have crept up to just under $2 per empanada. Nothing wrong with buying a bunch of empanadas to hit the $10 credit minimum - you'll probably thank yourself later. read more

I always go at night, usually busy so there is a wait. But definitely worth it. My favorite is the corn cheese empanada when piping hot! COVID-19 means waiting outside until they call your number. read more

The most disgusting thing I've ever seen in my whole entire life !!!!!!! And i mean that!! LOL I visited on an early Saturday afternoon and it was a lot busier than I expected I had to wait about 20 minutes for my 5 empanadas. I ordered the Hawaiian, Cuban, chicken parmesan plantain and chicken and potatoes. I usually am not a big fan of the green sauce because I don't like mayonnaise but I enjoyed their sauce. My favorites were the Hawaiian and chicken parmesan The prices are affordable and the empanadas are small tasty treats that can be very filling. I noticed a few people just come in and pick their orders up which made sense so you don't have to wait especially if its busy inside. This was my first time going to Mama's for a very late night snack after karaoke across the way. The menu is easy to read with great visuals. The staff were very friendly and helpful but dialed to let us know what they were out of ahead of time which resulted in us having to change our order quite a bit. Nonetheless, the empanadas were VERYYYY DELICIOUS and made up for the mishap. They were fresh, flavorful, and a very good size. I tried the beef and chicken wheat empanadas. I was least impressed with the corn Empanada made with cheese. It was very hard to chew the cheese and I literally choked on it. These little snacks can be addictive they have many different varieties to choose from including dessert.(they boast 50 flavors) They are small so you do need a few of them to fill you up if you like spicy definitely get the green sauce. They are a bit stingy with the sauce only giving 1 small container for every 2 empanadas you order. I can use one sauce on one empanada. I'm finishing this draft (started last time I ordered) as I sit and wait for my order of one cheese, one chicken and one beef. Same exact order from last time. Best empanadas ever !!!! I happened to be in the neighborhood and passed by this place and noticed the line of people waiting to order so I decided to order takeout before leaving back to Brooklyn. I love how consistent this local chain is and how they clearly exhibit pride in their product and in their locations - they're all clean, brightly lit and pretty transparent (with the one by the Queens Center Mall being the "not so cute looking" one as it's definitely an older locale and only offers standing room - but the quality (and authenticity!) is still there! Mama's not only offer's 50+ varieties of empanadas (fried or baked TO ORDER with either a maiz (corn) or trigo (wheat) wrapping or a bread-like baked alternative that caters more towards the calorie contentious and/or non-native consumer) and several other Colombian dishes such as grilled chicken/steak/pernil (pork) platters with rice, potatoes or vegetables, salchipapa (cut up pieces of hot dog with french fries...yes go ahead and laugh, but this reminds me of my childhood :D), several Colombian/South American/Caribbean sodas and beverage options, etc. Make sure any location you go to accepts plastic if you're intending on using a credit card. I know for sure that this location DOES accept plastic. I love how I can get full here with delicious food at just $3-5 dollars. Plus with empanadas you can grab and go if you need to and enjoy it on the road free of potential messes. If I were judging just the food, they'd get 4 stars. The empanadas are delicious. The wait time is utterly ridiculous though. Crowded or empty, the wait is never less than 20 min and I've only ever ordered a few empanadas at a time. The girls at the counter will talk and ignore you when you are ready to order. Last time I was there they called my order number, I went up immediately to grab it and the girl walked away and left my food on the counter wheee I couldn't reach it. I was clearly standing there with the ticket in my hand, obviously waiting to pick up my order. She proceeded to make salsas and clean up the counter until I said excuse me. She handed me my order as of I was the one being rude. Why call an order and just immediately walk away?? The empanadas are "okay". I bought a cheese empanada, chicken parm, egg bacon cheese. The cheese one was okay. No flavor to the cheese, too fatty. The egg bacon and cheese one is greasy with the taste of grease, there is absolutely no seasoning on the eggs. The chicken parm one is very underwhelming with little to no taste, the sauce is not good. Also, their ají verde doesn't have much flavor and it's a little too spicy. It doesn't compliment the empanadas. To add insult to injury, a bottle of water here is $1.55, normal, small Poland spring water. They have a minimum of $10 and require an ID with card purchase, just to let you know Incase you're thinking of stopping by and have no cash or ID on you. The wait time is 20-30 minutes at best, and this is when the shop isn't busy. I've been here a few times so far and it seems the empanadas have gotten more and more bland. The quality is not good unfortunately. The shop itself is clean for the most part, it has seating, decent lighting and they have a large menu to pick from. Honestly, if you want a good empanada on the go, try Caesar's Empanadas. They're a little more expensive, but the trucks are everywhere and the empanadas are much better. These little wrapped and fried empanadas pack flavor. They come in two kinds, the wheat and corn. Both have different textures to the shell. I prefer the corn because the texture of the fried dough comes close to a cross between the crispiness of a taco shell but not as crisp and close to the softness as a zeppole but firmer. The wheat shell has a texture more like pie crust. The ingredients like the flavor of the mozzarella, sauce, spinach or meats isn't cheap, they are flavorful and made of good quality. You stuff either with one of their delicious fillings and you have yourself a little meal. -The pizza empanada is awesome it really taste like pizza, as a matter of fact the flavor inside with the melted mixture of mozzarella and tomato sauce gave a hot gooey burst of pizza flavor better tasting than most pizza I had elsewhere where the pizza man didn't heat the pizza that's been sitting there long enough. -The Spinach & Cheese (Espinaca con Queso) was pretty darn good also because these empanadas come right out of the fryer making the cheese melted and stringy. The melted cheese mixed in with the tasty spinach inside that crisp and perfect textured shell makes for a great empanada. -There's also combo deals like $2.50 for 2 with a can of soda or $4.50 for 4 with a can of soda and up (like the 24 family pack for $31.20 with a 2Liter bottle of soda). They also have meals (steak and pork chop) for $6.75, yuca fritters, desserts, beer, MozzArepas, etc. and the Greenpoint, Sunnyside location has these frozen treats. -By the way the green sauce that's included accompanies the empanadas very well but it is so good you can put it on anything else like steak and it will be good. Or even just sip it out of the litter containers like a jello or rum shot. No wonder this place is popular and have many locations. I already been to the one on Northern Blvd. and 85th street as a first introduction to this brand of empanadas after a night of drinking, they are open all night, so this is a good spot to grab good food in the late hours of the night. I also been to the one across Queens Center mall and the one in Greenpoint Ave, they are all very good but since the Steinway location is the closes, this is now my spot. The opening of this Mama's Empanada's is one of the best things to happen in Astoria. The cheeseburger empanada is life changing. I'm not even joking. I choose to get it fried and encased in the crispy shell is a gooey combination of ground beef and loads of (cheddar? American?) cheese. Super moist and generally packed until it's almost exploding, I've suggested this flavor to everyone I know and since then, it's been a permanent addition to their order. Second up is absolutely the Queso corn empanada. The corn dough has a thin crisp to it and is PACKED with sizzling cheese (mouth-scalding if you attempt to eat it fresh out the kitchen). I sacrifice my lactose intolerance to eat this baby. It's worth it. Want dessert? U.S.A. Empanada ALL THE WAY. Maybe it was the fact I had low expectation in the first place, but I could not stop saying "Wow. This is good." as I was eating it. Imagine apples and cinnamon goop encased in a delicious fried empanada crust, topped off with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if you choose, and chocolate/caramel drizzle. Just like a hot and fresh apple pie out of the oven, this is a perfect treat if you're in the mood for something sweet. I haven't been blown away by the other flavors, and the beef or chicken with peas and potatoes tend to be pretty starchy (duh) but they're savory and satisfying considering the price. They've always tasted fresh and have always been served hot. Another pro is the free delivery. The restaurant itself is brand new, so everything is still gleaming and clean looking. There's a good amount of seating area and I've never seen this place full, which makes it reliable for seating space if you want to eat in. They also have some imported bottled beverages, which I haven't tried, but I'm sure people do appreciate. But seriously, don't you dare go here without ordering the cheeseburger empanada. I work nearby, so I ordered the Cubana and Greek for pick up. The greek was delicious with spinach, feta, and one other ingredient. The cubana was not as good, I won't get that flavor again. We wandered across Steinway and ended up inside a small eatery with a counter and some high top tables scattered around. The menu isn't huge but it's not very basic either. We both went with a mozzarepa (just because) and I had a Greek empanada, while my friend had the chicken empanada. Both were excellent and extremely filling. Love this place! First and most importantly, the empanadas. The baked ones are a nice, softer option with a more doughy flavor and the fried have a great crunch. My turn savory one is the Hawaiian, with Pineapple, Ham, and Cheese. It is awesome! I have yet to have a bad savory empanada there to be honest, but I haven't had any of the crazy ones either. I guess I am more purist, they are all mostly good and varying levels of awesome. The dessert empanadas are good also, my favorite is the Fig, Caramel, and Cheese. I was not a big fan of the sweet empanada with Nutella, peanut butter, and chocolate. Looking back, I should've realized it beforehand that it would be very thick and heavy. I wish I had a huge glass of milk for it, that would've helped. It needed something to lighten it up in flavor and thin out the consistency. Other than empanadas, the soup is amazing and a great cure for a hangover or when you're feeling sick. The arepas are good too. I usually order delivery, but have gone into this location a few times as well. I've only been to the physical store at this location here in Queens, nice little spot with friendly service. I was on my way to LGA airport when my sister told me she'd stop so I could experience Mama's empanadas. She told me the best one was the carne con papas corn empanada. I personally don't like corn tortillas so I was really very skeptical and even argued about whether to get it in a corn empanada. I ended up getting that and a regular pork empanada. After I took my first bite into that carne con papas corn empanada, I instantly regretted doubting my sister. The fried corn empanada was AMAZING, and on top of that, the meat inside was flavorful and juicy. I could not believe what I was eating, it was great. The regular pork empanada though, was just alright. Because it wasn't fried, it wasn't as aromatic and satisfying to bite into as the corn empanada. Also, the overall experience was just okay as the combination of the meat and empanada dough was actually a little dry. On a scale 1-10, how good is Mama's Empanadas when drunk? 11. Hungry? 11. It's just THAT good. My go to is the spicy, chili con carne. If you think sriracha is spicy, then I wouldn't recommend this one for you. There are other varieties like ham and pineapple (yes I enjoyed it), greek, philly cheese steak, chicken baked, possibilities is endless. Good time to go? Well any time I feel like it's been busy at nights regardless if it's 6 pm or 11 pm, weekend or weeknight. BTW, $10 minimum. So order 4 empanadas and a drink. read more

Tried this place for the first time. Ordered 6 empanadas. 3 ground beef, 3 chorizo. Was given all ground beef. Aside from a simple order getting mixed up the empanadas were good. Friendly staff and prompt service. And the price was right. I'll be back! read more
