The quality of these empanadas is what you expect them to be, considering they are worth less than $2 a piece. I stopped by here with the bf and we ordered 9, trying the beef, chicken, Cuban, spinach and cheese, cheese steak, ham and cheese and the Italian calzone. Service was very prompt and everything came out to be about $16 with a can of Coke. As we sat in the car and we munched, I realized that getting the corn spinach and cheese wasn't the brightest idea. The crust was a lot thicker than the wheat and I like my empanadas nice and flaky. The bf was pretty satisfied and loved the orangy sauce better than the green. Think it was Thousand Island dressing? Out of the ones he munched on, he really liked the ham and cheese and I agree that it was the best one. It was quite cheesy and I'm a huge cheese fan. Our least favorite was the chicken, which seemed more like curry chicken with peas? The beef empanada reminded me of the beef in the sloppy joes served in school cafeterias. I ate 2 and felt already satiated while he had 5 and had to save the Cubans for a later night snack. I picked up a couple wheat cheese empanadas and a couple beef corn empanadas on the way home from a trip to Tacos Al Suadero.I didn't come here in a while but this place is still as good as it was a couple years ago upon discovering the joint. The cheese empanada was liberally packed with cheese and oh so satisfying. The beef empanada was even better than I remember it with hearty chunks of beef and potatoes. I also tasted a hint of cumin in the beef empanada. They don't have open containers of sauce on the counters anymore. I guess there were a lot of customers like myself who would shamelessly pack the sauce on every tiny savory bite. The acidic and semi spicy green sauce is so addicting. If you want any extra sauce it's gonna cost you 25 cents a pop. Mama's also has sweet dessert empanada options which I have yet to try. They sound delicious. The gigantic menu options allow you to find any kind of empanada to celebrate your unique and individual palate. For under ten bucks you can lubricate the walls of your stomach with some Latino greasy goodness. Love these empanadas. I worked in Jackson Heights for many years, and there is some of the BEST Latin food out there, but these take the cake. I like them because they are not even half as greasy as many of the others I have had in the neighborhood. Like most places in JH the parking sucks, but welcome to NYC. Any place usually worth visiting has a long line, the parking sucks, and has weird rules like cash only...it's just the way it is. Love this spot. They've really revolutionized Empanadas. Typical Colombian Empanadas are usually filled with just ground beef and potato. Mama's Empanadas has managed to think of every possible thing you could stick inside of an Empanada and they've made it work. Chorizo and Pernil (Pork) are among my favorites. Cheese is pretty good too. Just be sure not to burn yourself as the cheese that oozes out is scalding hot. It's good that they're open 24/7. This is great food for a late night munchie. Out of the 3 Mama's Empanadas I've been to, (Queen Center, Steinway, and this one), this one is my favorite. It's not as busy and even though this place is fast food considering, it taste homemade and fresh. I love empanadas! I normally get the traditional beef and potato, but occasionally get a more Americanized flavor like "Cheeseburger". I don't know why Mama's Empanadas aren't always packed. Italian Empanada - perfect ratio of italian sausage with onions and peppers. VERY greasy. Chicken Fajita Empanada - a new empanada grilled chicken, onions, peppers, and a hint of cheese. Kind of greasy. Chicken Teriyaki Empanada - grilled chicken with teriyaki sauce and broccoli, but can be a bit dry, surprisingly. This needs more teriyaki sauce. Maduro Empanada - maduros and sweet cheese. It's not too sweet or overpowering, and the maduros are soft. They put powdered sugar on top but lately have been cheaping out, so I always ask for extra. Smores Empanada - melted chocolate and crushed graham crackers mixed with marshmallows. Pretty good and very sweet and chocolatey. I wish they put more graham cracker crumbs. I love their green sauce. I think it is a spicy, cilantro based sauce. Customer service can be bad, but has been improving lately.
