The empanadas are delicious, if you haven't tried the corn beef with potato empanada then you're missing out. The reason for three stars and not five is because of the actual service. For lack of a better word the service is trash. They automatically put you on hold for five to ten minutes before you even say "Hi I'm calling for a delivery." I've been to this location a handful of times, but yesterday I was having brunch across the street and remembered my SO has been begging me to come to Mama's...so I called ahead and picked a few up in 15 minutes. I ordered him 2 Greek empanadas, 1 black bean and cheese, and a guava and cheese empanada (for myself). The guava and cheese is my favorite guilty pleasure, and I normally get them fried instead of baked. He thoroughly enjoyed them and was so happy I bought him some, so really this review covers the positive experiences of two people. As for me, I waited until later on at night when I needed something sweet to eat my empanada and it was worth the wait. The combo of the guava and cheese is the ultimate blend of sweet and salty. Empanada me. Again. And again. Mama's was stop #4 on my Jackson Heights food crawl as we trudged our way down Northern Boulevard - let's face it, it's a wasteland out there. Mama's is a good four star shop. When you need your empanada fix satisfied in any way imaginable, she'll have you covered. There are over 30 different empanadas on the menu. Some of these are gimmicky - like the cheeseburger and chicken parmigiana - but you'll get all your staples like carne, pollo and queso (are others really necessary?). When I went I tried the beef, spinach & cheese and Elvis (peanut butter and banana). The first two were great, and the mouth-searing spicy green and sweet pink sauces they put out on the table were great on both. The Elvis was kind of a disappointment; the bananas were good but the peanut butter was too thick inside the wheat patty ("well that's alright Mama, that's alright for you, that's alright Mama, just anyway you do"). The wrapper was hard, but once you bit into it, the filling went perfectly with it. My friends all had different empanadas and the reviews were unanimously positive. The food is probably 3.5-star worthy, but what really puts Mama's over the edge is her prices. I'm looking at a photo I took of the menu and about 75% of the empanadas cost $1.50, which means you can easily stuff your face for $4.50, or at most no more than $6.00, which is pretty good value. Tried this place since it was close to my friend's apartment as a quick bite before heading out to lunch. I tried the shredded beef/potatoes, cheese/spinach, Cuban (cheese, ham, pork) empanadas. It was sooooo goood, but I wish I had tried the cheeseburger one. Definitely need to eat it with the green sauce. One star off because it's such a bitch to find parking.. today was so busy in the shop and the cashier told us it was going to be 12-15 minutes. Though the years I have been here more times than I can count !! What can I say the empanadas are delicious with so many to choose from sometimes its hard to pick a favorite. Out of the corn empanadas ,the classic chicken or beef are both great. Cheese ones are good , broccoli & cheese surprisingly good. I personally enjoy the Wheat Empanadas best. Can't go wrong w the classics chicken & beef always good. As for the rest , ham & cheese , cheese & pepperoni pizza are good choices. Great place!! Besides the 50 Empanadas available they also have a small food menu. I had the breaded chicken with white rice and beans. You can't beat the price for the portions they give you. The wait is between 15-20 minutes but well worth it. Everything is fresh and made to order. Note to the foodie reading this...BUY MORE GREEN SAUCE!! There are so many flavors to choose from and I've never had a bad one. My favorites are probably the guava and the plantain and cheese as those are combos that I would never think of. As for the savory, spinach and cheese, cheeseburger, pepperoni pizza and the chicken fajita are usually my go-to. All in all, it's a great place to pick up something quick and I always have leftovers because I usually buy 12 or more at a time. As a tip, definitely spend extra to get them baked. I have only done pick up/ delivery from here but each time the empanadas are amazing. Personally, I prefer the flour empanadas over the corn but I have no complaints from here. This place is great! Whenever we go to Queens to visit family, on the way back to Manhattan, we jump on Northern Blvd and grab some empanadas. Then eat them while sitting in traffic for the Queensboro bridge. They are hot, slightly greasy, and delicious. The flavor selection is great. You can get either corn or flour. This is not low cal or healthy eating by any stretch, but they will make your heart sing. And the price is great $2 to 3 dollars per empanada (some are even cheaper!). I usually only use yelp to look for reviews and such but I felt like I really needed to put this out there. I ordered 4 broccoli and cheese and 4 beef empanadas over the phone so that I can reduce the wait time. Person on the phone says "4 cheese and 4 beef correct?" Over 6 times and I respond with 4 broccoli and cheese and 4 beef empanadas. After 5 minutes of going back and forward over the phone she seemed to understand. When I arrived to pick up my order, she gives me 4 cheese empanadas and 4 ground beef empanadas and charges me $1.50 per each which totals up to $12. I repeat back my order to her and she corrects it. However she never charged me the correct price which is $1 per empanadas. When I questioned why it came out to $13.07, she tells me it's because of tax. I point out that 4 empanadas shows $6 and the other 4 $6 which totals to $12 plus tax is $13.07 where it should have been $4 + $4 = $8 + tax, she tells me that it shows $6 because of tax on each item. I then point out that it shows tax on the bottom and she tells me it's how the computer rings up the items. I was pissed, frustrated, tired of waiting over 25 minutes for my food after arriving, I tell them I just want my money back and that I will not pay for something I did not order. She then continuously ignores me and calls other's orders and a different man from the back who came out did the same. Yes the food is good, yes I love the fact that they are opened 24 hours. Yes I enjoy the quick snack. However, there is 0 customer service. I will NOT be returning to this place ever and spread the word. The worst experience at a restaurant I have experienced.
