I was so excited to try Mami Monchitas because everyone I know swears it's the best thing to happen to Frankfort since... well, bourbon. So maybe my expectations were sky high. Unfortunately, the food did not join me up there. We started with the nachos, which came with what can only be described as "Velveeta cubes: deconstructed." There were literal chunks of cheese that hadn't even melted. I didn't realize I was ordering nachos with a side of arts and crafts. I ordered the chicken enchiladas, and they were... shy. Very shy. Like they'd heard of seasoning but preferred not to associate with it. I kept waiting for flavor to arrive, but it never found our table. To be fair, my husband got the carnitas and actually liked them so there is hope! And I will absolutely give credit where it's due: the service was fantastic. Our server was friendly, attentive, and the best part of the experience. That said, the prices were bold. Confident. Ambitious. For the quality we received, it just didn't add up. Our first experience with Honduran food and it did not disappoint! This place was recommended to me by a local and I was intrigued by Honduran food. Needless to say it did not disappoint at all. They had a deal on margaritas when I was there and it was tasty! I ordered the family sampler as my meal and everything was fresh, flavorful, and delicious. The canoa and pupusa were my favorite in the platter, and everything was so good. This was my first time visiting Mami Monchita's, despite living in the area for almost 2 years. Everyone gives this restaurant raving reviews, and I am disappointed it took me this long to make it out there! Our server was a doll. She was sweet, helpful, and friendly. She answered every question we had without frustration, and recommended delicious items. We dined on the patio which offered a cool, relaxed, and lighthearted ambiance. Bonus- we got a table fan to keep bugs away! That's really going above and beyond. The food was delicious- I HIGHLY recommend the cheese papusas. My only qualm is everything was a bit lacking in seasoning, for my liking, and salt was not readily available. We will be back, and are excited to try more dishes! read more

UPDATE 09/14/2024 After ordering via delivery years ago, we finally made it here in person! It was a nice evening and the patio was inviting. We started with a peach sangria which was cold and delicious. Next we shared the anafres, a refried bean fondue with chorizo and flour tortilla chips. It was delicious. The family platter appetizer was recommended by Maggie, one of the employees, as a way to taste several dishes in one order which was an excellent suggestion! We split each item in the sampler and each of us was satisfied with the amount of food included. I wanted to try a plantain dessert so we split the empanadas de platano with vanilla ice cream, which is quite tasty. We enjoyed all of the dishes, and I want to return for both the seafood soup, and fish tacos! read more

We visited on a rainy day for lunch. This is a cozy restaurant tucked away on a residential street. We were greeted by friendly and welcoming staff. The restaurant serves traditional Honduran cuisine and also gives a percentage of their earnings to a project in Honduras that helps feed and educate children. Everything on the menu looked wonderful. I had the papusa lunch platter ( think delicious fried corn bread with savory filling (either meat or cheese or one of each). I chose guisado beans ( pink seasoned beans)and casimento (black beans with rice and coconut milk) as sides. The platter also came with delicious pickled onions and shredded cabbage. My husband chose revuelto hondureno a chicken and rice dish with beans and vegetables. Everything was delicious! Portions are generous and the food was freshly prepared. We finished the meal with Honduran coffee and shared a flan. This was our first visit here (on a recommendation from a friend). We look forward to visiting the restaurant again and trying out the dinner and cocktail menus! read more

My enchiladas would be called tostadas in Mexican food - crisp tortillas topped generously with chicken (or beef), shredded cabbage, and cheese. The combo plate adds two sides. Mami's nachos were also good - crispy tortilla chips with chicken, beans, cheese, and jalapeños. Overall it's a pleasant, medium-sized location with an attractive exterior. I had a trio of pupusa - chorizo and cheese with a side of pickled cabbage and sweet plantains. The pupusa were perfect. Fresh soft corn patties stuffed with cheese and chorizo!!!!! Anthony had Yucca con Carne -- Fried Yucca with cabbage, beef and criolla sauce. Very tasty! We tried Honduran sodas too - banana and grape flavors. Great find for authentic Honduras cuisine. They offer a few unique Honduras options along with some typical Mexican dishes. All the food we ordered was delicious and plated well. The server was awesome and took the time to go over some of the Honduras plates I was not familiar with. They even have Honduras sodas but when looking at the ingredients on the bottles they did not have healthy ingredients. There was a live entertainer when we were there. The young lady seemed very talented and play a mix of rock and country music. This was a nice touch. We made a trip to Frankfort just to get out of town for the day. We planned eating here. For a few minutes we thought our GPS was leading us astray but it was correct. To get here you go through a neighborhood. It is a cute little place and seems to do well. Our waitress was sweet and explained the menu. This is Honduran food. The ceviche was really good with fried plantains and probably my favorite. I got the pupusas which are like a corn meal fried pancake with either cheese or pork and cheese. Not bad. I can't remember what my husband got but it was large and had more fried plantains with cheese, shredded chicken and other things reminded me of nachos with everything. I can't say we will be back but was worth a try. I am sure there are closer Honduran food closer. read more

Word of warning: my GPS took me through some weird side streets by some empty warehouses to the back of the building. The real entrance is off of Ridgeview Drive. Even there, it really doesn't look a place you'd find a restaurant. But if you come, you'll likely be glad you did. The place promises Honduran cuisine, and offers a variety of corn-based delicacies, including pupusas. I found no shortage of vegetarian and vegan options, clearly labeled as such. The introduction from our waiter indicated the business was still closely tied to Honduras and was contributing to charity down there. Plenty of goodwill was built up before the food arrived. And when it did, my lunch special plate offered a mouthwatering variety. Two freshly grilled cheese pupusas lay at the center, with two different pickled relishes to eat with them, two sauces on the side, a trio of yuca fries, and some beans. That was a complete meal, and the balance of fresh flavors was excellent. It was as good as any Central American cuisine I've ever had. My only real complaint is that the variety of fillings on the pupusas wasn't as great as I might have hoped, with no loroco or vegetables to be had. But given all the variety of side dishes, that was hardly a problem. There were plenty of food and beverage options that looked worth trying, and I think it's highly likely that I will try them. read more

Let me tell you, we were so glad we tried this restaurant! The service was friendly and fast. The food was just outstanding! Perfect portion sizes (we ordered from the lunch menu) and fresh, flavorful food. I ordered the pupusas, which I would describe as a fried, flattened, tamale. It was absolutely delicious, they provided cabbage and pickled onions as a topping, which only added to the flavor and deliciousness. My wife ordered the tostadas, also delicious with perfectly cooked tostadas and chicken, and the chismol added a lot of flavor. I always have excellent service when I go and Honderan cuisine is a welcome change from most Latin restaurants in Central Kentucky. Make sure you get the guacamole with fried plantain chips--it's some of the best guacamole I've ever had. Tonight our waiter recommended that jalapeño shrimp with white wine sauce and I absolutely loved it. The wine sauce cut back on some of the heat of the jalapeños and the shrimp was cooked to perfection. I can't wait to work my way through the entire menu. read more
