My wife said let's take a drive and visit an older establishment called Top's Diner. It was about 45 minutes from home, I'd never visited but I remembered driving by it several times due to the unique building structure. We came for breakfast and we weren't disappointed. Breakfast was the typical greasy spoon -- which was what we needed on a cold wintery day. My wife got eggs, 2 sides of meat and 2 huge pancakes. I got the meat sampler (bacon, sausage, ham, scrapple), 2 eggs, homefries and toast. Wow! And our waitress was so fun. This is an old school kind of spot, if you appreciate those types of places, then this will be a homerun. Plenty of parking and easy access. Lots of "feels" from the inside vibe and paintings on the wall. Reminds me of being a kid. Breakfast, with coffee, was less than $40 for 2 (including tip). Side note -- they had a homestyle roast beef or chicken dinner, over noodles, mashed potatoes, corn, w/ dessert for their lunch special. It looked amazing (for $16). I can tell you they give you a lot of food this is the third time we have been here this is the first time I had to wait this long. This is a typical diner. I had a 4 egg vegetable omelet with a double order of sausage. The eggs were very good and the sausage was not greasy (I had the patties). In general this was a very good place to eat breakfast, and I believe it is really the only game in town. I did think it was a little pricy for what it is. The menu was kind of small for a diner. I do not know if this is a plus or minus. It is just an observation. My breakfast cost over $20 which is a lot for breakfast. I was paying for myself, but I could see where it could get really expensive quick if the whole family ate here. The bottom line is if you are in Huntington, PA in the morning hours, Tops is a fine place to eat breakfast. read more

I would say the food here is "meh" at best...2 stars. However, I bumped it up a star toe a total of 3 stars because of the friendly service. I decided to order the chicken & waffles. Mistake! The waffle was a small cheap frozen waffle. And the chicken was sort of stewed in thick gravy. It smothered the waffle. It looked pretty gross! However, the gravy & chicken tasted ok... a little bland though. Could have used some seasoning. But it needed to be served over mashed potatoes or rice...not a frozen waffle! Honestly, I have never seen chicken & waffles done that way before. And i am not a fan! I prefer the southern style, which is fried chicken (either white or dark meat) on a good homemade waffle and is best served with a spicy/sweet syrup. I thought that is what I was ordering! So, I just ordered one side because the options were not great. Hubs fared better since he ordered eggs, home fries, bacon & toast. Had breakfast here on our first morning in the area and it was one of the best we've had in quite a while. Hubby had the Tops signature breakfast: basted eggs, bacon crisp, hashbrowns, and sourdough toast. I tried a veggie omelette with sourdough toast. I've got to admit, I'm more often than not disappointed in breakfasts out, but this one was a delightful surprise. Our waitress, Dalicia, was great and was patient with our questions: are the veggies sautéed or microwaved? Sautéed. Does the sourdough have a sour taste? No. Are the hashbrowns freshly pepared or frozen? Freshly grated in-house. Since she gave all the right answers, we ordered and awaited our meal. The sourdough toast is the best I've had outside a great bakery in San Francisco, the veggies sautéed beautifully, and the hashbrowns screamed "fresh". Tops is a fabulous place to eat homemade diner food done right! It should be on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. I recommend the fresh cut fries with, well, anything. The prices are great as well. Kudos to the owner who works his butt off to make every dining experience special and spends a lot of time making the Huntingdon community better by contributing to fundraisers, hosting food trivia on Facebook and participating in local radio. A recent renovation has spiffed the diner up nicely! Make it a point to stop here. read more

We were told to try TOPS for breakfast - so we did. While the service was prompt and coffee was plenty the wait for food was long - especially considering the number in the restaurant. When I hear diner - i think quick. Especially for breakfast foods. We were just about to give up and leave money on the table for our coffee when part of order arrived. And a two minutes later the rest. This appears to be a place for locals to meet and not so much for visitors / tourists. It appeared the staff knew several people there. There were two groups that were waiting on friends / family to join them. I found it interesting that the management had a disclaimer (of sorts) on the table explaining how service can be slow if there are a lot of orders. We waited 22 minutes for food and again - the place wasn't even half full. There was only one waitress and she was doing fine taking orders and returning frequently to refill your coffee (fair coffee). Our food was all average - we've had worse but we have also had a better. Toast came buttered, eggs cooked perfectly. Oatmeal was the real deal - not instant. Again, wait staff attentive and friendly enough. If you are in any way on a schedule or in a hurry this is NOT the place for you. If you have a couple hours to sit, chat and socialize then by all means this is your place. read more

I recently hired Tops to cater for my wedding vow renewal. Rick (the owner) is an outstanding person to work with and helped my wife and I with all the options we had for our small reception. On top of that, Rick already had another wedding planned that day and STILL accomodated us for our event. I can't over emphasize how great it is to work with someone as customer oriented, helpful, and down to earth as Rick was. The food was outstanding and he was personally there to help cater our event as well. In my opinion, he does business the way it should be done. At the end of the event, my niece decided she was interested in having Tops diner cater their wedding in September. I believe that speaks volumes for the type of person and quality of food you are dealing with when working/eating at Tops diner. read more

I love a good diner, so I was excited to try Top's Diner. I have to say that I was extremely disappointed. I have eaten here several times in the hopes that the bad experiences were just a one time fluke. They weren't. All three times I have gone to Top's were pretty awful. The waitresses are unfriendly, unhelpful, and just all around bad. We didn't get our drinks refilled the entire time we were there, the waitresses rarely checked on us, and when they did come by the table, they seemed to be inconvenienced and annoyed, especially when we asked for a bottle of hot sauce or where the restrooms were. The wait for the food is RIDICULOUS. Each time I have eaten here I have waited anywhere between 30 minutes to almost two hours for pretty basic food orders. And I am not exaggerating! The worst part about this is seeing other tables who were seated well after us get their food first. Another table near by literally walked out after seeing people get their food quickly when they had been waiting over 40 minutes for their food. I got the vibe that Top's serves their "regulars" ahead of their standard customers. On one visit I watched the cook casually eat fires off of a plate of food that was waiting in the cook's window to be picked up and delivered to a table. Another visit there were only 5-6 tables of patrons in the entire restaurant and they still couldn't manage to get a few plates of eggs and toast to us in a timely fashion. Don't waste your time and money at this place. The service is terrible and the wait for food is some of the worst I have experienced. read more

Great staff and clean, but disappointed with food. It wasn't horrible, just disappointing. Since 22 diner was closed for some repairs/renovations, we tried it out. Pancakes were huge and bland. More like biscuit texture than a pancake. Breakfast wrap was ok, but loaded with more taco me at and potatoes than eggs, onion, and tomatoes; It could have had more seasoning. We also thought it was odd that chip beef option made you choose between toast and potatoes...we are used to getting chip beef on toast and having homefries come with it. At the end, we were going to use our card to pay, but diner charges you 3% extra for non-cash payments...no matter how much your bill totalled . I know fees come with use of credit cards and stores/restaurants may require a minimum purchase to use card, but our bill was over $17?!? We chose to pay cash. read more

As they have pointed out they do make stuff from scratch, but that's more of an excuse in my opinion than a valid reason. Our waitress asked if we would like a booster seat which she in return never brought. Following this I watched her give the fries off my plate to a "To-Go order" and then brought me my burger and said it would be a few minutes for my fries?? Really? After this she disappeared and we finished eating without a single beverage refill.. We sat for about 10 minutes after finishing our meal until finally she reappeared and gave us our check. This is honestly my favorite place to go whenever I'm looking to go out to eat, and it's currently the spot where my girlfriend and I are becoming regulars. While visiting the area, we found this diner via Yelp. We drove about 40 miles round trip to eat here. There were a few good reviews and a few complaining about the service. The responses from the owner convinced me that he was concerned about the negative reviews. That is a good sign. We arrived at a diner that was located in a small community. We walked into the diner just before lunch and actually watched the place completely fill up with customers in 10 minutes. We were greeted by the first of two waitresses who seemed a little "off her game". Since this was our first visit, we were not familiar with the menu. She was a little rude when she kept asking if we were ready to order and our response was " not yet". We then were greeted by the other waitress ( dark hair ) and ordered. The entire time, we were enjoying watching the locals greeting each other. With the place totally full of customers, we received our food in about 10 minutes. I ordered the Top's Signature burger. It was awesome! The fries were really good. My wife had the Veggie burger and enjoyed it also. If you are in this area, ignore the negative comments... This is the place to eat. read more

Today was my first time here. I wasn't sure about it at first but when our server came over she was very friendly, smiled and even brought some special placemats for my kids. My kids (especially my youngest who is 6) are somewhat difficult to keep entertained while waiting for our food. But these special mats did it! Coloring mats that you color by rubbing your spoon across it and the color comes right up on the mat!! My kids LOVED it!! I thought it was pretty cool myself :-) Anyway,the food is delicious and filled me up. This place is not shy about giving you enough to eat. Even on a lite portion. As far as my rating, this will just pertain to breakfast. I've never had anything off the lunch or dinner menu so I can't vouch for it...however if it's as good as the breakfast then I don't need to. Top's is a wonderful diner to stop and have a good old fashioned breakfast. The pancakes are great, home fries to die for and the eggs are always cooked perfectly. Many specials are offered including the top of the morning breakfast for the budget friendly folks. I also enjoy the Trudy's Mess which is basically eggs, peppers, onions, cheese, home fries, any meat you'd like and whatever else you want them to cook, put together on the griddle and cooked into a wonderful mess. The pies here are really good too (I recommend the graham cracker pie). The staff is always delightful and the coffee is non-stop. Stop by and give it a go! Most amazing place & food!! Friendly service & staff. No other place we would consider stopping when we are in the area. Tried nearly everything in menu & it is all great. You will wait, but my grandma's cooking was worth it too!!!! Sit back & relax!!! This is real cooking of fresh food!!! That takes a little time but it's worth it. If not, McDonald's was invented for connoisseurs of speed. We are not locals but have always enjoyed the banter and friendly atmosphere of the diner. I'm sure there are those who want their Burger King bacon, egg and cheese croissant without any human contact or conversation. Just a 2 minute wait on the Microwave AND a free crown!! My son will soon graduate from the local college but I'm sure we will miss TOPS enough to return for a family meal. We passed by this diner several times in the past and last Sunday we decided to stop by. My husband ordered the Egg'stacey Sandwich and I ordered the Chicken & Waffles Or Biscuits. We also ordered the potato chips in cajun flavor, which was freshly made and excellent. First of all, when I read Chicken & Waffles, I'm thinking about fried chicken, especially since the menu had no description; so I was a bit shocked when the waitress brought what looked like boiled chicken pieces covered in gravy. Secondly, the menu clearly said that it was dark meat, and the chicken in my plate tasted nothing like dark meat. We pointed that out to the waitress and the cook, but they insisted that it was dark meat. So either they are deceiving us by using something else (perhaps turkey) instead of chicken thighs, or they did such a horrible job to make chicken thighs taste like that. Either way, it was a disappointment, and we are not going back. read more

All I can say is "Wow". I'm not sure if I was in the same diner that another person on here rated so poorly!! My family and I visited Top's while staying out at Raystown Lake. We were there for breakfast, lunch and dinner on different days. Each time, we were greeted with nothing but hospitality, friendliness, and that "home town" feel. The servers all worked together harmoniously. I will admit, the food DID take a little bit longer to get than we are used to, but the owner has an FYI Table tent at each table explaining how their kitchen is pressed for space, and when they are busy, to expect a wait. We were looking for a local place for a 'real' breakfast when visiting Huntingdon and stopped in at Top's Diner. Top's is a typical local diner that is constantly busy and caters to a lot of families and locals. The menu is varied and has something for everyone. We ordered a short stack with chocolate chips, a two egg Western Omelet and a "Classic" (two eggs, hash-browns and bacon). The hotcakes were tasty and HUGE (we should have only ordered one!), the omelet was very good and the "Classic" was, well, classic! The only issue (and that kept this review at 3 stars) was the wait. According to the menu, they have limited grill space and they say that the wait can be long when it gets busy - well, they are 100% right. We did wait an awfully long time between ordering and getting served, but the food was hot when it did come out. We found the wait staff to be friendly and efficient and the atmosphere to be typical diner tacky (which is a good thing!) and the price for breakfast can't be beat. If they would only increase the size of their grill - then Top's would be even better. Tops' will be our breakfast stop the next time we visit Huntingdon. read more
