I'm gonna start with the food. The food was pretty good. Everything was flavorful. I really enjoyed the breading on the catfish. Had a unique flavor but was very good. The greens were done right. The vibe of the restaurant was upbeat. Nice music playing and I appreciate the decor of all the 70s, 80s, and 90s show and movie posters. I wish the service would've matched everything else and for this they get 3 stars. Everything took long. Long to take our order, long to get our food, long to get refills, and long to get the check. You know it's long when you decide not to ask for anything else because you don't want to be delayed any longer than you've already been. I hope they can get the service on point to match the food. I saw them on Elder Eats and they recently reopened in a different location! They still have great food! I went by late Sunday afternoon and the restaurant was packed with about a half dozen customers waiting for takeout orders. After being seated for about five to seven minutes no one came to the table to take our order, so we decided to get everything to go. There is plenty of seating and it took about 25 minutes to get our order. If they had a couple more employees to handle cleaning the tables and floors in a timely manner I think that would help with customer satisfaction. Casual dinning. read more

My daughter & I dined at this restaurant for lunch and the food was very good. I wanted oxtails, but this dish is only served on Saturday. I suggested to the waitress that the menu reflect that oxtails are served only on Saturday. I ordered the catfish plate with yams & fried okra. Cornbread came with the meal but the cornbread was not fresh, so the waitress gave me a fresh piece of cornbread. The yams were to die for and the fried okra was fried too hard but I ate the fried okra anyway because I was hungry. The red kool-aid was just right! The catfish was cooked perfect and everything was seasoned just right. My daughter ordered the meatloaf plate with Mac & cheese, collard greens and cornbread, she also ordered fried pork chops with brown gravy - superb! She had to exchange the meatloaf which tasted like leftover for more of those wonderful fried pork chops!! Now the collard greens were a bit spicy for my daughter but I loved the kick they had. Then, we ordered banana pudding, peach cobbler & sweet potato pie. I would return to Mama Lou's just for the desserts!!! The food was good however, I don't eat salt so, the taste was very strong to my brothers and I. There was also a strong garlic taste in the smothered chops. The fish was very good... flaky and crispy. We visited on Saturday around 1230 however, there was only one very pleasant young lady working the front. As a result, when refills were desired or more tartar sauce, we had a mild wait for her to circle back to our table. Still, it was a very pleasurable experience. IMO, the stars of this establishment are the desserts. We tried the peach cobbler, banana pudding and sweet potato pie. All three were AMAZING! I wish they had greens, but there were none available when I went. The staff were so friendly and welcoming, that it felt like spending time with family. Thus is the third time I've had food from thus restaurant. Only the last time because a friend brought it to me. Each time I had oxtail. I got about six little tiny bones from the tail and one medium. Buried in rice with shreds of meat in sauce. Who can find an ox this little? I order potatoes I got rice because it buries them into the gravy. I have spoken to the owner about them once before. He offered a replacement meal, but never was avail. Too busy each time. The food is consistently delicious -- I haven't had a single bad dish here, and the quality always shines through. My only critique is the customer service. The greens were flavorful and delicious. The mac & cheese was very creamy, but not necessarily cheesy, but it was OK. The oxtails were some of the most tender fall off the bone that I've eaten however, there was absolutely no flavor in the meat nor in the brown gravy that accompanied to it. Had to use a lot of salt and pepper and hot sauce for 30 bucks. I don't believe it's worth it. It should change the race to something that's not as mushy overcooked. I was craving banana pudding which is a staple of the South. I always remember the homemade ones in Birmingham Alabama. I found this place on Yelp and decided to drive there. I guess it is only a drive thru. I tried opening the door and a sweet lady opened asking how she can help me. Banana pudding please. Without hesitation she asked for me to wait right there and she went and got it. It was fresh! Usually this pudding get soggy quickly. It looks like it was just made! Absolutely delicious! I pass this restaurant weekly and my bestie and I decided that today was the day to go in. I ordered catfish and he ordered smothered pork chops -- both dishes were well seasoned and beautifully prepared. And let's not forget the sides -- greens were tender and flavorful, sweet potato casserole was a delight, and the fried okra was good and plentiful. Did I mention the banana pudding? Well. Well. Well. So here's the deal. The oxtail plate is the best $15.50 you will spend in San Antonio for a meal. It's delicious and includes a drink to boot. The sides were all handmade and the cornbread was just the icing on the cake. San Antonio is not the mecca for soul food but we finally have a contender. This should be your first choice period. Everything was as it should be included the to go packets of crystals hot sauce. This only changed my review from four stars to five. The oxtail it's a top of white rice so it's as if you have a meat and three. (my southerns will know this reference). The pork chop plate was delicious. I appreciate that the pork chop was a cut that included some fat. All flavor baby. The mashed potatoes are REAL. Slam dunk again. To top it off I also included a portion of peach cobbler. I ate it on the ride home it was wonderful. They only offer drive-thru or curbside which is fine by me. The to go food is packaged extremely well and is roadworthy. Basa Isn't Catfish It's advisable to steer clear of Mamma Lou's. My recent visit on 5/7/24 left much to be desired. Despite ordering a 2-meat plate with crispy fried catfish, what I received was a soggy dish featuring basa instead of catfish! Upon realizing the discrepancy at home, I attempted to contact the restaurant to address the issue but was met with an unanswered phone and a full mailbox. Returning to the establishment that day, I inquired about the matter with the staff member who pleasantly explained she didn't have the decision making authority to act. She did, however inform me the manager, Tasha just left. She kindly wrote Tasha's contact information with a promise to let her know to expect my call. My many attempts to reach Tasha were unsuccessful. Her phone wouldn't allow for messages to be left, nor did she pick up the phone. I even called back to the restaurant for assistance, but was met with an unanswered phone and a full voicemail . It's concerning that Mamma Lou's misleads its patrons by telling them, the fish they serve is catfish when it's actually basa and assuming customers won't notice. We were told the oxtails came as a 12 piece. We spent $51.31 that's not the problem. That also included a large sweet tea and a regular lemonade. We did not receive straws for our drinks nor did we get a receipt. Once we made it home we realized that the oxtails were short. We had 3 oxtails. We tried to call but of course we did not get anyone on the phone nor could you leave a message. I believe if we truly received what we were told we would my review would be totally different.
