I can't remember the last time I found a dish inedible -- but I did here. The angel hair pasta with seafood was cooked to a paste with at least as much sticky, sweetish "cream" sauce as noodles -- a gummy mess. The shrimp and scallops were OK, so this was what I ate. Three of my four companions gave their dishes -- also pasta -- bad reviews, though not quite as negative as mine. None felt their meals were worth $30 per plate. One friend did like his Alfredo. Fried calamari were cooked to toughness. Pizzas sample we got was the best of the lot. Oddly, the Chianti was the best I've had in a while, and the service was very good. But no one should do to pasta what these people did. It just isn't that hard to cook if all you're doing is slapping sauce on it. I told the chef about the food and paid for it, as I don't think people should eat for free. But beware before you order. read more

I have been coming to the Silver Spring location for years (2002)even when I lived in other areas in the DMV. It has always been a crowded little spot with really good food. It really felt welcoming like a family whether it was carry out or dine in. Over the past year there is a noticeable change at the Silver Spring location since Jr, has taken over. I think his staff is running him, rather him managing the staff. Covid could be blamed, but bad customer service and decline in the quality of food is a company culture issue. I don't know if the newer cooks and wait staff are racist but I've never been treated so poorly. It's as though Jr wants to be liked so he goes along with it. Until today I went back to the establishment multiple times because of people who managed the establishment prior to Jr taking the reigns. Today I received my food ( meatball sub) the bread was raw. This is the second time this has happened. A few weeks ago I decided to dine in. The table bread was raw, and there was so much parmesan cheese on my food it tasted like dust. I literally packed up my food and went to the police station on New Hampshire and Colesville Rd. I was looking for a lab because that's how concerned I was. Today I ordered a meatball sub and a slice of cheese pizza. There was a chemical after taste from the pizza. While I'm waiting for them to bring my sandwich back. I notice the restaurant credentials in the window on the counter so I took a picture. Apparently this made Jr upset. I'm sitting with my feet crossed and he kicked my foot. Initially I thought it was a mistake but he looked back and kept walking. I called him less than a polite name. He told me i was very disrespectful and he didn't want me to come bsck to his restaurant. He went on some "45"diatribe " this is my establishment and I can ask you to leave and not come back. He was calling me ignorant ( you know the stereotypes of all Black women attempting to assert themselves).Then he mentioned about me taking a picture of his credentials and that's when I knew that's what set him off. I stop in here for lunch quite a bit for a slice of pizza. Always great customer service which is huge for me! Today I tried the seafood asparagus and it was amazing!! A little pricey for lunch but with all the seafood that comes in the pasta may be slightly worth it. I know this seems like a ludicrous statement but mama Lucia As pizza/pasta haven is low-carb/Keto friendly. They have zoodles to replace pasta, a protein only meal option and plenty of healthy options like salmon with grilled vegetables (which are low carb- broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, mushrooms, asparagus!). It's definitely not cheap but an excellent option if you are watching carbs. Highly recommend if you are looking for a Keto/low carb option. The pizza is excellent NY-style pizza. Good sense of proportion between the crust and toppings, chewy crust that nevertheless has some crackle in its outer edge, bright tomato flavor in the sauce, nice olive oil on the white pizza. The pastas are a good deal- you get a lot of pasta plus a salad plus a generous portion of their delicious garlic bread. Service has always been very warm and efficient. I've mostly gotten takeout from them even before COVID, but when we've dined in everything has gone very smoothly. They recently did a refresh of their interior and it does look nicer. Got dinner here with my girlfriend after work on Friday. We had heard a decent amount of people say that this restaurant is good.. so we decided to give it a try. PROS: We both ordered pastas.. I ordered some spicy marina penne pasta dish (forgot the name) and my girlfriend ordered the ravioli rosa (ravioli in red sauce). The pastas were delicious and they give you a good amount of food. The service was pretty good and the waitress gave us their daily specials that weren't listed on the menu. CONS: The bread they give you.. felt like it had been sitting around for awhile. It was kind of chewy/stale. Seems like they baked it in the oven... then just let it sit there. They give you a salad too with your order (at least for pasta).. we got the house salad.. it wasn't that great. The price was fairly expensive for 'pasta'.. but I guess in downtown silver spring.. that's how it is. it was like $14 for each plate of pasta before tax. I've lived a mile away from this place ever since it opened, and this is the first time I've been here. There once was a Mamma Lucia's in Aspen Hill when I lived there almost 20 years ago that I frequented often. I liked the bread basket slices and the garlicky butter spread for starters. I could of had just that and a salad and been happy. But... I shared a 14" mushroom and feta pizza with my friend. It's really quite large with six generous-sized slices. It's a good pizza, but I was surprised and disappointed, being that it's a "down home Italian cooking" restaurant and they use canned mushrooms! No Italian Mamma would do that! If I return, I will most definitely not order a pizza with mushrooms, which is my favorite topping. $18.00 (w/ 2 toppings) isn't all that cheap. The calamari appetizer was awful! $12.50 for rubbery rings and a few of the tentacle kind. The menu says 'fresh squid", but I beg to disagree. If you are a calamari fan, please, please go to 8407 Kitchen bar and get the best and freshest calamari in Silver Spring (It's walking distance from here!). Plus it's much cheaper AND you get more. The best thing about this restaurant though is the men behind the counter, especially the older gentleman who treats you like family. My friend's daughter passed away last year, leaving her to care for her nine year old son. Mamma Lucia's was a place he and his mother frequently visited and everyone knew them. The workers had a good rapport with the boy then, but now when his grandma brings him in they entertain him, and give him a small piece of pizza dough to swirl and take home. He loves going here, and it makes me happy to know that a group of caring individuals would take the time to show kindness to a boy who has suffered a great loss. read more

2.5 stars, rounded up because I've had better food from this local chain and because I prefer to round up than down. We had just finished a long and carb-light weekend with family. A request was placed for spaghetti and meatballs, so I pulled up my bookmarks and looked for a place that was new to us. I've wanted to visit a Mama Lucia's location since sampling their food at a Yelp event a few short months ago, so this seemed like a great excuse. Sadly, the samples I tried then we're not a great indicator of the dishes we ordered last night. They have a few weeknight specials that a new diner should consider carefully. Monday the pasta dishes are on sale. Tuesday the specials are on pizza, and Wednesday features wine. We made the mistake of wanting pasta on a Tuesday instead of a Monday, and paid dearly to feed our cravings, as the pasta dishes range from $15 to $24. Three of us ordered two sodas, an appetizer, two pasta entrees, and a dessert. Our meal was $70 before tip, and I really wish that we'd waited until a Monday, or that we'd gone to a different restaurant last night. Our meals came with salads, and we ordered Caesar salads. They had been dressed earlier in the day and had been refrigerated. Much too cold, and the croutons were wet. Lesson learned- order the house salad! We also asked for some garlic knots (not on the dine in menu) sorry to encounter no garlic whatsoever. The lack of garlic was a common theme through the meal. Calamari was a nicely sized appetizer, and we were happy to share it while we waited for our entrées. Lightly battered and not overly greasy, and served with a cup of Marinara sauce. We ordered the spaghetti con meat sauce and Linguine Baresi-Pugliesi with shrimp and scallops. The red sauce was quite acidic, and the meat had very little flavor. We added pepper and Parmesan and it was a perfectly adequate plate of slightly overcooked pasta. The linguine was also slightly overcooked, and the oil and garlic sauce was begging for more garlic and salt. The seafood was undercooked, which was a pity, as the scallops were big and meaty. Just another 30 seconds would have been perfect. Just a tip, there is a charge to split a plate, but the entrées are big enough to share, so a small up charge was better than taking a large amount of food home. At the end of our meal we ordered a slice of Mamma's Own Tiramisu. The plate was nicely decorated, and the portion was generous, but it was again lacking in dynamic flavor. Too bad! The evening wasn't unpleasant, but it was unremarkable. Our waiter was very pleasant, and the meal moved at a nice pace, but there were no flavors that would make me want to return the next time a carb craving occurs. read more

The food is great and the lunch prices are reasonable. I got chicken franchese. They must use whole lemons for the lemon sauce because it was very tart and I found lemon seeds in the chicken. The pasta comes with marinara by default which doesn't really go with lemon sauce, so ask for no sauce and just use the sauce from chicken for the pasta. The women's bathroom has 2 lights on the verge of going out plus a whole row of lights above the sinks that were off. I didn't see a lightswitch so the lights must be controlled from elsewhere. I mentioned the light issue to an employee but I have no idea if they will follow up or ignore me. I am vision impaired so I notice these things. We had such a delicious lunch today. Restaurant was spotless. Anthony and his team were friendly, professional and welcoming. The risotto ball appetizer was to die for, as well as the homemade gelatos. All three of us got salads and I highly recommend Mama's Salad which is the blue cheese, with candied walnuts, onions and a raspberry vinaigrette. Again, fresh and outstanding. The young Hispanic girl was counting receipts when I walked up to the counter. Doesn't look up and say can I help you with a slight attitude. I didn't respond. A guy in the back asked me for my order. She retrieves my food and toss it on the counter. Ask me do I need a receipt? I said yes. She throws it in the bag and walk away. I had dinner at Mamma Lucia in Silver Spring, Maryland last night (Sunday 6/10). The restaurant choice was a result of a group of seven and finding a place where there were options for everyone in the group. The restaurant is welcoming and clean. The workers and servers are friendly. None of the employees that I interacted with were good with the English language but we made it work. The bathrooms are clean. There is lots of parking. They have all of these things covered. The food isn't quite as easy to describe. They start you out with a basket of garlic bread and what at first glance looks like olive oil. How nice I first thought. Until I tried to eat it. It isn't garlic bread, and it isn't olive oil with herbs. The bread is tough grilled bread that seems like it has been sitting out for hours. The oil is very bitter (possibly rancid from the flavor) with bits of raw garlic in it. I was starving so I finished my piece of bread slowly as to protect my teeth. I was left with a terrible bitter taste in my mouth that lasted until I got home and brushed my teeth. Me and my partner decided to split a pizza because it was one of the less expensive options. We went with a large margherita pizza for $23. The pizza came out quickly. The presentation was nice, they do have that part right. Unfortunately the crust was tough and it also had a bitter taste. The toppings on the pizza were so scant. For comparison, my favorite local pizza shop in nearby Columbia, Maryland serves a pizza of this diameter with twice as much cheese and toppings for half the price. Mamma Lucia's pizza is overpriced for what you get and honestly it isn't that good. Crust is tough. Very scant cheese and toppings. Final word. Friendly people. Free and easy parking. Clean. The pizza isn't very good. DO NOT eat the appetizer bread and oil. read more

I will admit that I am a bit of a plain Jane when it comes to ordering pizza, I usually order a plain cheese. I feel like you can tell a lot about how good a pizza if from eating their plain cheese pizzas. I have had pasta dishes as well from Mamma Lucia and I am never disappointed. My husband likes to get a custom pizza with alfredo sauce instead of pizza sauce, sausage, onion and pepperoni. It's one of his favorite things to eat! Did I mention that they have gelato too? YEP. This is an average Italian place; not bad, not great, just good! I would say the prices are too high for what it is. I ordered the chicken parm that comes with spaghetti. I really liked the pasta because of the sauce it was in. The chicken wasn't very tender or easy to cut, but it was okay. The portion was awesome, so much pasta, but even so, $20 was a little much especially considering it's $13 on the lunch menu. Service was great though. My waitress Ashleigh was very friendly. Interior is much nicer than the Mamma Lucia that I've been to in college park. Also located in a great area. I would probably return but again it's not the best Italian you'll ever have. read more

Mamma Lucia offers some pretty good pasta dishes and a solid pizza. Their pizza is good, if a little greasy, with good cheese and good sauce. The crust can sometimes get a little soggy from the greasiness of the cheese, but other than that, no real complaints. Their pastas are almost always pretty good; they give you a healthy portion and their sauces are flavorful. I like most of their seafood type pastas, especially a couple of the specials with lobster or shrimp that come and go from the roster. Their salads are reasonable as is their calamari. Actually, the calamari themselves are fairly tasteless, but the marinara sauce that comes on the side is delicious. It is not a sparkling, deluxe restaurant by any means; another reviewer said that the place is dirty. I disagree with that but would say that they are certainly not the paragon of sparkliness or class. The food is solid, the service is friendly and fast, the rest is tacky but, ultimately, less important than the food and the reasonable prices. read more

We visit occasionally for pizza, which in the past was the only item they did well. The rest of the menu is pretty mediocre Italian fare, okay for those who don't know good Italian food. I say "did" do pizza well before. Thin crust, good sauce, real New York style. Not anymore. The last pizza we ordered reminded me of the awful pizza Jerry's Subs and Pizza used to serve. At $23 for a large with one topping, that's a real ripoff. They either changed their recipe or have somebody that doesn't know how to make it right. Maybe if one of the owners reads this review or the other negative ones, they might bring the old recipe and us back. read more

As much as I love Mamma Lucia, I love it because I value the customer service first and food second. I know what's good and I stick to it. Namely, the meat sauce pastas. I've tried cream/white sauces on different pastas and they are just doused in oil. I ordered the special this week - pesto ravioli with shrimp ($28) and for the entire dish, 50% was sauce and oil. I'm actually saving it to use on a future pasta! The dish was fine, but it just reminds me how good their ragu sauces are. I stick with those and I'm happy! Their customer service also can't be beat. Luis and the rest of the staff always take such great care of our family. They just re-vamped the menu, and we loved trying some new things.
