We stopped by for after work dinner tonight. The seating was open seating once we arrived. The atmosphere has changed in the dining area. It was warm and relaxing with a lot of lighting upgrades and the smell of incense. There was only one server working the tables. We were done looking through the menus when three other tables sat down after us. The waitress briefly stopped at our table then instead decided to take the orders with two of the three tables instead of taking our order which was very disappointing. Beautiful not huge shrine with incense of good vibes and lighting is important when dining in in my opinion. Culture is important when eating at an authentically acclaimed spot! I've always been disappointed with the lack of quality Indian food in Anchorage. The consensus seems to be that our options are middling at best. I used to feel that way too until I tried Mandala. Occupying the space Kansha once stood, this restaurant surprised pretty much everyone as it boldly opened in the face of an ongoing pandemic. I figured I ought to patronize them for support... but my expectations were low. Lo and behold, I was blessed with some of the most flavorful Indian food I've ever had. Their goat do pyaja is a (mildly) spicy red stew with sliced onions and tender chunks of goat--not quite "melt in your mouth", but amazing regardless. Their palak paneer has an addicting quality and a single serving of the garlic naan could probably ward off an army of vampires. I was disappointed they didn't have any momos available that day, but they've given me plenty of reason to return and explore the rest of their menu. They were short staffed and everything still came out in a timely manner and the chef was so sweet and didn't show any signs of stress. If he hadn't told us they were short staffed, we would've never even known. I got my curry mild, but didn't think it was that spicy. I would maybe take it up a notch next time. No alcohol served here either. Ordered pick up for late dinner and it was ready in about 25min on a Saturday. Restaurant looked very clean and had a nice ambiance with white table cloths. When we placed our order they asked for the spice level for each dish and as requested both were mild. The Butter chicken and Tikka Masala were delicious and for dinner each was about $16.00. I wish the portions were a little larger but compared to another local spot who charges about $6.00 more per entree it wasn't a bad deal. I was looking for a restaurant near by as I had spent majority of the afternoon making COVID19 masks for the community. I called my order in and was given a p/u time. I arrived a little early and was greeted by Sanjay the owner. He was so polite and pleasant to talk with giving me a history of the beautiful setting. I picked up Alu Gobi and Butter Chicken. Stop reading reviews. Just go! Small, family run restaurant with food made with love and done RIGHT, the way it's supposed to be done. Food is excellent and VERY authentic compared to that other one across town which is NOT authentic and used a watered down version of Indian food. I'm not sure why the other one is so popular because this place is 10x better!! The flavors are the way they should be and not an Americanized, watered down version. The portions are fair given the ingredients. I had butter chicken and Kheer and left full. This is a new kid on the block and the owner/chef is very friendly and comes out to chat with you about the experience. I believe they are Nepalese. Anyway, It's all made fresh to order too and I can tell it's not packaged or freeze dried etc. this was a wonderful experience and I will return. And if you're wondering how I know we'll--my uncle is Indian,born there and came to America with his family. He married my dad's sister when I was very young. His mother used to cook Indian food for us before she passed and we went to Indian restaurants regularly because my Dad and Uncle were best friends and family. My uncle ALWAYS chose the restaurant and we weren't allowed to go anywhere that wasn't authentic. Lol. So I grew up on Indian food and I know when something is off or their skimping on ingredients or using substitutes. Covid cuisine night generates a winner! I have heard very positive mumblings about this new kid on the block. I read up on the place and decided to give it a whack. What did I find? Indian food by Indian foodies. These folks have enough skin in the game that I gave them the confidence to open a restaurant in the middle of a global pandemic. You've got my attention! I wound up with a plate of goat curry. It was absolutely fantastic. I failed to catch on the menu the fact that the goat has bones in it. I'm not used to chewing meat off the bones in my soup. The flavor was so good that I just couldn't bring myself to care. What a fantastic meal! The night that I went, there was no seating available due to pandemic restrictions. This removed the opportunity to read the table service and judge how clean the place is. If all of that is as good as the food, I expect to see that the fifth star (consistency) come along shortly. read more

I'm always in favor of more Indian choices in town, and the food at Mandala is a welcome boost to the scene. Service is friendly if a bit slow at times. The restaurant isn't big but if you go at off times, you should be able to be seated without issues. Wow. I walked into this restaurant and could feel the "zen". It felt so calm and serene. The food was amazing! We spoke to Sanjay and he is just such a pleasant and talented man. Insane. Todays experience was probably top 3 worst dining experiences I've ever had. We came in about 15 minutes after opening and there were approximately 4 others seated already. We brought our 1 year old so needed a high chair. The server asked if the table by the door was ok but I had asked to be seated at the back. He was visibly agitated, rolled his eyes and took off( without us) to the back of the restaurant. What a jerk. I asked him if there was an issue and he simply said it was awkward to get a high chair at the back. It wasn't. Against our better judgement we decided to stay and nearly TWO HOURS LATER, our food came out... The food was under seasoned and curry was cold?!?!? WTH??? The rice was undercooked and the portions were tiny. Then the server told us that the cook burned 4 orders of naan and ours would be out "soon." In the meantime the server/waiter is arguing with the other worker telling him that "he should have listened because he had already told him 4 times" and also told the entire restaurant that momos only get made once a week... Everyone at this establishment should get replaced. Im appalled at the "service" and the cook obviously didn't know how to run the back if it took 2 hours to serve 5 tables. Sanjay recommends the Malai kofka and pairs it with a lamb curry. The rest is history. We gorge out, yet still retain capacity for dessert. Oh. My. Goodness. If you want some of the most exquisite Indian food, you NEED to go to Mandala Restaurant. I worked for years at a 5 star Indian restaurant in Cleveland, and I've been searching for something to remind me of that deliciousness for about 20 years. This is Nepalese cooking, so the spices are deep and rounded, not hot (unless of course you ask for it to be hot). You'll taste the cardamom and cumin, coriander and saffron. The naan is light, and everything is homemade. I really just cannot believe what a gem we have here and I really hope they flourish. I wanted to lick all the containers clean. The picture I posted has chicken tikka masala in the front and then clockwise: daal makhani, basmati rice, goat biryani, and naan. The place is tucked into the strip mall across from Dimond Costco, where Kansha used to be (sadness, I loved them too). They are only open 11-2 right now for take out, and you'll have to order 30+ minutes ahead of time, but it's worth it. Good Nepalese takes care. This is by far the best Indian restaurant in town. The food is authentic and flavorful. Sanjay the owner is very friendly and has great customer service skills. He makes it a point to come introduce himself to all his customers and make sure that the food is to their liking. I think the restaurant may want to adjust their menu prices for Doordash. Comparing to the dine-in/take out menu, some items are over 2x the original amount which is pretty absurd. The Samosas were $10 yet the smallest samosas I've ever had, they were good though. And for $22.00 I thought I would get a lot more curry and not a tiny takeout cup. Doordash takes 30% of the sales you make so you can probably calculate the 30% price increase to cover any losses while making sure your customers who are not mobile or unable to come in personally for any number of reasons can get a fairer service. Also I'm noticing that I wasn't the only one who had to wait a long time for the doordash order. As far as I know, doordash tablets have a loud ring but my order went unconfirmed for 30+ minutes. We visited Mandala a couple weeks ago and I forgot to leave a review but this place is amazing. I got the Jaffna curry with lamb and it was incredible. It was like my mom made it. Highly recommend the Jaffna curry. The restaurant itself is small, which I love. The chef came out and chatted with us. He made excellent recommendations for food. The prices are reasonable too.
