Bombay South was the only place we revisited in our short time in Anchorage. The narrow, unassuming restaurant belies the depth and spectrum of flavors. Our Indian friend says their dal makhni is perfectly spiced and not overly creamy, while we enjoyed the smoothness of the malai Kofta and Tikkas, paired with both butter and garlic naans. All our entrées came with rice. Both times we began with piping-hot veg samosas and ended with warm cups of masala Chai and thick, sweet mango Lassi. We really appreciated the waitress letting us call in a dine-in order for our second visit, in consideration of both their closing time and our impending flight. If we lived in Anchorage, I'm certain we'd be regulars here. read more

One of my favorite Indian dishes is Palak Paneer and I've eaten it many times. My husband and I visited Bombay South today, we ordered the Palak Paneer and Chicken Curry with Garlic Naan and Lachha Paratha. The Chicken Curry was tender and tasty, but when I tell you it was the best Palak Paneer I've eaten it was. The texture wasn't mushy (there was still a slight bite) and the taste was phenomenal. Bombay South Indian cuisine is relentlessly delicious paired with excellent customer service. I DoorDashed some food from there tonight, and I incorrectly ordered due to DoorDash displaying the wrong photos on their order listings... I was sad when my order arrived and it wasn't tikka masala but dry chicken what was I supposed to dip my nan bread in? And my samosas? And where's my rice! Aaaah in instant despair I tried to get DoorDash to correct the situation which my plight was refused. I wasn't even offered a credit or a refund. So I called the restaurant to tell them my about my woes... They confirmed my problem and instantly offered to rectify the situation at no charge and even delivered to my house and refused any tip or payment. I'm honestly still in shock that they went above and beyond to help a sister out when they definitely didn't need to. This was a Door Dash error. Thank you Bombay South my new favorite Indian Dojo. We were so surprised by the price we paid for our meals and the portions had very little chicken in the tikka masala. The chicken didn't even taste good. The quality has gotten worse and the price increased. Even the veggie pakoras were much smaller. Why?! Cmon guys, you are ripping people off. I will not be returning to your restaurant. Good luck. I eat at the other Bombay location multiple times per week. Why? The all you can eat buffet is quick and is a massive value. (It's also a very effective way to get your veggies in...tough in our state) The food here is just as good, but the value isn't. What I like about ordering Indian foods, is that I can get it VERY spicy/hot. The food in the buffets is really tame, gotta make sure it doesn't upset Granny's stomach. What I don't like, particularly here, is the value. The dishes are just too expensive compared to the competition. And the interior is not up to the caliber of the prices. read more

This place actually deserves six stars. The restaurant is very casual no frills. The food is incredible and really just beyond words, the butter chicken is a show stopper. You may want to order the spicy on the side as medium is still on the fairly spicy side. Service is nice and not overwhelming. The prices are very fair for Indian food. read more

We went for dinner yesterday and we're a little put off by the woman at the counter awkwardly saying that they were only doing to go orders for the rest of the evening, she sounded unsure when she said it but looked like it was coming from someone in the back. There were people still eating at the tables and it was 1.5 hours before closing. But whatever, we took our dinner to go. Just found the situation odd. I was so pleasantly surprised to find that they lowered their prices! Yes instead of increasing them like everyone else. These new prices are much more reasonable and more accurately reflect their smaller portion sizes. The food is always amazing but can often leave you wanting more if you don't order an appetizer. For example their lamb dishes usually only has 5-6 small chunks of meat and 3-4 pieces of potato. Same as the chicken with maybe 2-3 pieces more, not even one chicken breast worth. So if you're hungry be prepared to spend some money. read more

As an English person, living in Alaska, i get frustrated by the lack of Indian food. I was excited to try Bombay South. I am already set in my ways, because I've eaten Indian food since i was young, as it's the number one takeout food that people ate in my part of the world. And so i want my Indian food to taste the way it did back in England, to be presented in the exact same way i have always had it. I lived in England and Ireland - I am used to my Beef Biryani always being presented in a certain fashion. Which is that the rice pilaf comes with all of the meat, vegetables, spices, nuts, fruit, seasonings etc already contained within it, and is a dry, yet colourfully orange yellow style of rice, and garnished stylistically with hard boiled eggs, cucumber and tomato wedges. That's how it was in both countries i lived in, and always accompanied by a separate dish of biryani curry sauce which you pour on top of your rice. So that you can make it as sloppy or as dry as you personally like it, which is awesome for eating with your peshwary naan, or whatever one you like best. Unfortunately, this is not how it's served in Alaska, though i did get it like this in Chicago one time whilst i visited. I guess i have partially accepted it, and just now sort of accept that as long as there's a general approximation of the same sort of flavours, then we can call it good. So I thought I'd try Bombay South, whilst harboring an unspecified hope that my beef biryani be my beloved English style, but really knowing it won't be. Anyway, I didn't order beef biryani, i ordered vegetable biryani, so i could get an approximation of the range of vegetables that would be included. I got a naan bread basket which contained 3 types of bread, garlic naan, plain naan, and paneer kulcha. Hub ordered Lamb Vindaloo. I was happy. I love lamb, but was nervous to order it because i hate fatty lamb, and if i could just try his, then I'd know whether to order it next time. So, my biryani - it was the dry style, ie curry sauce already incorporated. I just think a dish of sauce to go with it would elevate this dish to heavenly heights and make me so happy. His lamb was superb. Tender chunks, he only found one piece of fat. His sauce was pretty hot but i did warn him beforehand. I had lots left for a takeout box, and it was delicious, studded plentifully with everything that should be i it, and cashew nuts too. I did hit upon a clove occasionally, but it's not a big deal, the flavour was delicious and tasted authentic, and i ate it again at midnight when i Netflixed and chilled - alone. Its my me time. Very poor experience. Ordered a masala dosa. The sambar was stale. The dosa had to be sent back because they had not cooked it well. There was no coconut chutney. I asked for a mint chutney. It was completely tasteless. Never going there again. read more

This place is a small location in South Anchorage owned by the same people who own Bombay Deluxe in Midtown. Not much seating and is primarily a spot to grab to-go orders. Food quality is comparable to Bombay Deluxe, but there are subtle differences in preparation. I suspect it's just a matter of having different cooks than the main location. Service for to-go order is quick and friendly. I haven't eaten in the restaurant itself, but whenever I've been there to pick up an order it has always been clean, fairly quiet, and well-lit. read more

I have long been a big fan of Indian cuisine, and after hearing a few good word-of-mouth reviews for Bombay South, I was really looking forward to a meal here. Ultimately, my experience was a big disappointment. Positives: +Very friendly staff +My family was able to find a table immediately upon entering, which was nice. It was very quiet when we arrived around 6:30. Negatives: -Parking. Lots of businesses. Few spots. -After we were seated, we began to notice how cold it was..... bracingly cold.... wear your jacket during dinner cold. The temperature never fluctuated through the meal, so we were a bit uncomfortable for the duration. - Prices. Yikes. Very expensive for what you get. Fine dining in downtown Anchorage prices. I think only a few entrees were under 20. - Food. Chicken was super dry. Beef kebab was so dry it was similar to dehydrated meat/jerky. No dipping sauces for the naan. Prices didn't seem to correspond with the quality or quantity of what was served. read more

This newer location offered a pleasant surprise to me when I looked over the menu- they have dosas! Sweet! I expected an identical menu but our server explained that the 'South' is also picking up South Indian cuisine. This is great because to my knowledge nowhere else in Anchorage can you get dosa. I got the masala dosa and it came uniquely rolled and sliced into 4 sections. This is a clever way to make dosa easier to eat. The garlic Naan was thicker than I'm used to but was quite good. The service was friendly. The restaurant is fairly small so I would definitely check first before coming in a group or even have a backup plan on a date or something. read more

Went here for a birthday meal with my mother and we found ourselves commenting on the highly flavourful food throughout our dinner time conversation. Been seeing the signs for Bombay South. I ordered the lunch special mixed dish. Comes with Chicken or Lamb curry, l chose chicken, dall curry and it came with rice and naan. It was delicious. Chicken curry was a bit thin and not hot enough for me even though I requested the hot version. They don't know me yet so the next time I will make sure to ask for extra hot. Dall curry had a tangy combination of tamarind and cilantro/ cumin - not a traditional fair. I didn't expect the three bean version red bean, lentils and chick pea. I had a mango lassi, perfectly prepared best I have ever tasted in the world and the combo plate was delicious. I went when they first opened and found it mediocre at best. I gave them time to settle in and get good. Went back today (years later). I ordered curry lamb, spinach, black dahl, and naan. It cost $68. I got about six small lamb chunks in bland sauce. I could barely taste the curry. The spinach was extremely bland, very few spices. The dahl was 2/3 yellow, with some black lentils thrown in, and kidney beans . The Dahl was also very bland. They gave me one naan. You shouldn't have to add curry to what you get at an "Indian" restaurant. This is not Indian food. It is an over priced extremely bland attempt at Indian food. Very disappointing. There are far better restaurants in Anchorage worth supporting. read more

I've never had Indian food so I didn't know what to expect but after tonight I now know Indian food is not for me. Maybe I'm too basic but I was not a fan of their spices. I did like the naan bread though. I really wanted to try the dessert but they told us they didn't serve dessert at this location. That was upsetting. We tried out this place and thought it would be an actual restaurant but it's more of a small cafe/deli. Friendly staff and the place looked clean. The menu items were priced too high and food tasted just okay. When we ordered, we asked for medium spicy but the dish received was more mild. We would be willing to try them again though. read more

Dinner time. Working out the kinks with lots of potential. Visited with a group of four and they obviously are doing well for carry out. Need to find that balance between answering the phone and taking care of the carry out customers as well as those who are expecting table service. Portion size of the curries was underwhelming for the price but the quality was well above average. Garlic naan was worth the price. Our server was super nice. They may need to get one person to work the register and carry out along with a person to wait tables. We will definately be back...and hope to give 5 stars next time. read more

If you have been to the midtown Bombay, you will be pleasantly surprised with how much better Bombay south is. Their food is so fresh and flavorful. I've been to both Bombay's and this one blows the other one out of the water. I would give this restaurant 5 stars but it is a bit pricey. Still doesn't stop me though! read more

The raita is terrible at this location it's basically greek yogurt and super thick. They skimp on the rice compared to midtown, it's literally 1/3 of what you normally get and there is no kuchamar salad. I will say though that I think the lamb tika masala is amazing compared to mid town. Just wish there was some consistency. read more
