They also customised a dish for us which was not listed on the menu and that was veg biryani, it was delicious and satisfying our craving for Indian veg food! We were in a large group and they did serve us quickly in less than 30-40 min. This was our first time to Mandala but it won't be our last. The small, comfortable restaurant's tables are covered with crisp white linen. the young man who waited on us was soft-spoken and efficient. The Samosas and the Bombay Aloo were absolutely the best we've had as were the Matar Paneer & Tadka Dahl. We thoroughly enjoyed the garlic naan. To top off a most delicious lunch, we had an exceptional warm rice pudding with cashews, sweet raisins, saffron, and warm cream, topped with a garnish of silver leaf. Amazing! read more

I've ordered here from door dash 2 times. The first one I got the goat vindaloo which cost $26. The portion is suuuuupppper small, hardly any meat at all, mostly all bones. $26 worth? I don't think so. I tried them again about almost a month and a half later and same thing different day. I got the Tikka masala goat curry ( description says, BONELESS GOAT IN SPICY MASALA GRAVY $26). It came in small once again but this time the whole dame thing was all bones!!!! Seriously no meat what so ever! How are you going to put boneless on the menu but it's all damn bones,???? Luckily doordash gave me a credit for it... it's not worth no $26 at all! First, two dishes were an absolute 10! The chicken tikka delicious! The vegetarian alu gobi tarkari delectable! So good, maybe the BEST we've had. The matar paneer okay. The garlic naan nice. Pass on the vegetable samosas (except we did like the two little bowls of sauce that accompanied them), and we tried the masala papad, which we've never had before and will never order again. The two stellar dishes got us to three stars. The ambiance was good. It was the service. Yikes. The restaurant was 90% full, a Saturday night. We sat down at 6 p.m., we were (finally) able to give our order at 6:15 p.m. We got our food at about 8 p.m. Took another lifetime to pay the bill. (Restaurant patrons were commenting on the wait amongst each other, but no one got angry.) The waiter was, well, let's say eccentric and frazzled. I feel like there must be a story as to how he is (dis)connected to the owner and the chef. I wouldn't hesitate to go back for the chicken tikka and alu gobi, and try a new dish, but bring people who you like to talk with for a couple hours. Honestly, I didn't get the chance to try their food, I arrived a few times at the location and they refused to gave us a sit even though it was in the restaurant hours because it's they close soon even though they had 2 hours for there opening. Once I entered the restaurant was waiting for 15 min and only then did a guy that was there and look at me at the all-time come to tell me they are close even though it's their hours and I see someone in front of me and the door is open! Such a delightful feast of exciting flavors! We started with the pappadi chat, a very interesting fun vegetarian appetizer full of flavor and texture. We had the butter chicken which was incredible. The malai kofta, veggie curry, another flavor bomb! And the lamb keema peas, delicious. The naan was great too. I was so impressed, and cannot wait to go back. This was my first time trying Mandala, I am a huge fan of Indian food and often visit Indian places while traveling out of state. We dine at some of the other Indian restaurants in town, which are not bad; but this place was extremely wonderful. The entrees are a bit expensive, but that seems to be the trend with Indian restaurants in Alaska. Wish that wasn't the case as we would frequent more often. As mentioned on another review, the size of the entrees are a little small as well. Again, par for the course with Indian restaurants here. This place was very good! We realized in the nick of time that they closed from 2pm-4pm and called just after 2pm for a takeout order. It was no problem, they got our order together quickly and it was just what we were craving. I got the eggplant (Baigan Bharta) and my husband got the Tikka Masala with goat meat. We split a garlic naan bread. The Tikka Masala had great flavor, the goat meat may have been a little tough, but overall a good choice. Opening up a restaurant in 2020 was not for the feint of heart. I am always amazed at the number of exceptional ethnic offerings in Anchorage and Mandala continues that trend. My wife and I ate dinner at the restaurant last night and walked away claiming it as our favorite Indian/Nepalese restaurant in Anchorage. The food was phenomenal. The spice levels were perfect and the overall taste was amazing. We had the opportunity to speak with the owner (and chef, and front desk person) who is operating this establishment as basically a one man crew. You could tell in the manner in which he spoke of his craft how much it meant to him that he was able to stay open. Sanjay even introduced us to Gajar ka Halwa (a carrot and nut based desert) which I dare say was one of the finest deserts I have ever tasted. It was extremely decadent and rich and was the perfect topper to a perfect meal. Please get out and support local businesses (even for pick up) and I promise that you won't be disappointed. The place was empty when we walked in at 5:00 when it opened, and a group of four (my party had 3) walked in maybe 20 minuets after we did and they got their food within 15 minutes. You all have to try their food! The food taste so authentic - although I've never been to India or Nepal. We ordered Kadai Chicken and Malai Kofta. I had the Kadai Chicken and it tasted like it had like fifty-bajillion spices that just go so well together! So much depth and complexity in the taste that it had to be authentic. My hubby can't get over how good the Malai Kofta was (vegetarian dish). Dish came with rice but I also ordered Naan. Not only was the food good, the owner (Sanjay) was so helpful on the phone and answered all my questions as I struggled to decide what to order. I picked up my food but can't wait to dine-in coz he did a great job with the design of the restaurant. Also appreciated the reusable container and the rice container was recyclable, too. Suuuupppppeeerrrrr long wait time on take out. Gave me a pick up time at 6:30 (order was placed at 5:37) and then waited until 6:50 to get my food after arriving at the restaurant. The restaurant only had two tables that had been seated and No other take out orders were waiting. Food may be good but efficiency is nice when you have guests coming over for dinner and the restaurant tells you when to arrive. I think my food was started when at my pick up time. read more
