The restaurant had under gone new ownership since I've last come and it is great! I usually come here once or twice a year whenever I get the urge to visit my alma mater and this was my only visit this year. The new ownership has brought higher quality to the food and everything tasted SO MUCH BETTER! The seafood pancake was exquisite. The tteokbokki was magnificent. The tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) was so fresh and crisp! And the jjampong had a level of flavor it never had under old ownership. Terrible. Decided to have an early dinner and the food was obviously left over from lunch and reheated. The sesame chicken was so tough and dry we couldn't eat it. The beef & broccoli was leftover scraps. Beef looked more like ground beef, tiny pieces. They wouldn't even take the chicken off the tab after we politely said it just isn't edible. Their reply "we only use the tender parts of the chicken." The Crab Rangoon was pretty good though. $56 and we had to fight a fly off the entire time. Never again. read more

Portions are huge at this place. Definitely recommend getting a dish and sharing. They apathetically seemed to have roughly chopped the onions and yellow radish and tossed it onto the little plate. Service seems slow when there weren't many customers, but the entrees didn't disappoint. I usually get an option for pork or beef tangsuyuk (sweet and sour), but they only come in one way-pork. No spices were added when cooking no flavor......hard cold crab ragoons couldn't even eat them.... Their cheap $7.95 buffet is not good. Stick to the entrees on the menu because all of that is surprisingly decent despite being a Chinese-Japanese-Korean-Thai fusion restaurant. On this visit, I was really craving noodle soup and this is the only Chinese place I knew that served noodle soup and everything was complete. The noodle soup broth was really good and they were generous on the amount of seafood. On other visits, I ordered tuna roll and chow fun, which were amazing for what you had available in Auburn. The manager here is actually very friendly and loves to start a conversation. The inside atmosphere was pleasant. The first thing you see is a black-stoned waterfall. The buffet is to the right but there's seating area on both ends. This place is really crowded at lunch time on the weekends. My friend and I got lucky with the seats so be sure to arrive earlier to make sure you aren't waiting around. read more

With Korean speaking hosts and wait staff, you would expect more authentic food. Bulgogi was too sweet. Noodles were gritty. I told my father it's more like 75% Korean food. He disagreed and said 60%. Didn't try Chinese or Thai, but the Korean was definitely sub par. All other Korean restaurants in the area are much better for true Korean dishes. read more

This is one of the nicer chinese restaurants in Auburn. It is also one of the only places with thai food as well. I've had various chicken and noodle dishes from the menu portion of the restaurant. This is the only place that I know of that serves Thai food and although they don't have a super extensive Thai menu it's better than nothing! They have Pad Thai, Pad See Yew, and some of the popular curries like green and masman. There is also an entire Chinese menu and sushi too. One thing I wish is that they would make the Korean menu that they have in English because i would love to try some of those dishes. But that menu is only in Korean right now, and I get why since we have a large Korean population here. But that would be nice. So you can most certainly find something you like. Your usual "better" Chinese buffet (and by "better" I mean other flavors present in the meal other than sugar), but I would always argue for ordering from the menu in a Chinese restaurant as opposed to filling up on the same ol' same ol'. And Mandarin House has a very good menu--one of my dining companions ordered a penang curry dish and was quite impressed, which is a good thing because she's a bit picky. I went with the Crispy Duck, which came out hella crispy--almost black!--and beautifully presented with constrasting white leeks and a lovely orchid. You know you ordered the right thing when the waitstaff takes the time to compliment you for getting it. Atmosphere is pleasant, with a stone koi fountain in the lobby and artistic counter-top basin-style sinks in the restrooms. The local in our dinner party made a point of comparing this place to Cheng Du, which she said "smelled like ... something she didn't want to mention over dinner." We didn't notice the dark, lush dining room/sushi bar area until we were getting ready to leave, which of course made us all wonder what we had missed. Oh, well. We'll find out the next time we visit. Bonus points for having one of the most attentive and in-tune serving staffs I've come across in a buffet restaurant. read more

Best chineese buffet place I have ever been to and ate at. First they have multiple menus other than chineese buffet. They have the korean, thai and chineese menu. So I recommend ordering an entree over the buffet anytime. The cook is extremely talented and can even make some things off menu pending your request. This is a place where knowing what you are eating pays off. As for the buffet... its "Americanized" only because that's obviously what people eat. Want something not americanized then order off the menu. You want the buffet to be good? Get there when it opens for lunch or dinner. Thats the best time for a buffet at this place and I would even say any place. So again... best Chinese buffet place I have found on the east coast and know what you are ordering. read more

Horrible wait staff. Sat down with a family member who was having buffet the waiter asked me if I was going to as well I said no I'd like to order off the menu. He said okay but never came back to take my order. I'd definitely stay away from this restaurant unless your getting buffet where you can be your own waiter. The waitstaff just don't care and it's not like they were even busy. There were plenty of open tables and a ton of staff walking around. As for the buffer food I didn't try it myself. But, from what I could tell from the looks of the food and what my family member said about taste. It seems to be your average Chinese restaurant. Nothing special to write home about. Was quite impressed by the buffet. The items looked and tasted fresh and there was a nice selection of dishes. They had a couple sushi items and the sushi rice was perfect. The buffet area was also kept nice and clean. I went back and ordered off the sushi menu, but was not terribly impressed. The qualify of the fish was so-so and questionable on some of the rolls. My daughters and I love the buffet. Wide selection available and they add new items periodically. Our top 12 include the hot and sour soup, sesame chicken. Chicken curry, beef and broccoli, meatballs, mushrooms, general Tso chicken, almond chicken, fried shrimp, teriyaki chicken, Mongolian beef and Chinese donuts. Better to go at lunch or on busier night or for Sunday brunch when food is fresh. Ordering off the menu is an option as your will get large portions which make for plenty of leftovers. Ok, the cheesy neon sign says "We Open for X-Mas and New Year," but don't be fooled. The Mandarin shines for their Korean-Chinese cooking. Mrs. Wang, who runs the front of the house, and Mr. Wang, who is the head chef, lived in Korea for several years. Their experience shows with a separate Korean menu highlighting well-executed favorites such as chjampong noodle soup, chjah-jiang myun, kang pongyi chicken wings, yang jiang pi japchae, yu san suhl, and hye sam tang. Seriously, ask for the Korean menu and then ask the waiter to explain the stuff to you if you want to be amazed. Very polite wait staff! Nice, clean ambiance for an Asian restaurant. Buffet is only for lunch! Open on Sunday's yay! My BF and I ordered the egg rolls and the hot and sour soup for appetizers. Both were delicious! Not your traditional hot&sour soup, but we loved it. Mongolian beef was perfect. The chicken pad Thai I ordered was not very good and extremely spicy (which it shouldn't be) so I took it back and asked for chicken lo mein instead which came out very quickly and was SO delicious. When giving this place 4 stars, I am ranking it taking into account the $7.95 price tag for their buffet. And for $7.95, this is the nicest (and best tasting) Chinese buffet in Auburn. Although I don't live in Alabama anymore, I frequently dream of Mandarin House with their delicious sesame chicken and fabulous green beans..... Soooo GOOD! I make it a point to eat here everytime I visit family, and to this day I have not found a better Chinese spot as good ole Mandarin House.
