Egg drop soup, wontons, and spicy dumplings were decent even if my dumplings were a little cold... the sauce was spot on. The waiter forgot my order of spring rolls. Almost no one in our party liked their dinner entrees, which were all slightly cold (mixed vegetables with chicken, general tsos, and hot crispy beef). I ended up taking mine in a Togo box that I never got around to eating because it was just ehh with some rubbery chicken and a bleh sauce (I asked for spicy)... my father that very night drove to Hunan Manor in Columbia for a "proper hot crispy beef". I cannot recommend this place over Hunan Manor, but to say that place is the best Chinese in the area is really sad in an area where Asian culture is so prevalent!!! by far the best chinese in the laurel area. They do all the traditional dishes and do them extra well. They have excellent service and they have plenty of vegetarian options. About the only bad thing id say are not even the restaurants fault, such as being located in a shady shopping center. I wish they would describe their menu options a bit more..like what the heck is paradise chicken? Or Cleopatra chicken? But if you ask they will tell you. They don't deliver but its ok, they rock. read more

Overall meal experience on a scale of 1-10...we rated it about 4... First Visit Was 5/11/2013... Based on internet reviews, we gave it a try. My hubby & I usually stick w/simple items when we try new Chinese restaurants. This gives us a feel of what we "may" encounter should we dine there again. We were somewhat disappointed w/our food...even more so considering the higher price tags. We ordered Hunan Shrimp, Hunan Chicken, Spring Rolls, and Hot & Sour Soup. "Every" dish was subpar. The Hunan dishes lacked flavor (very bland & weak sauce; Shrimp was not fresh), Spring Rolls (greasy), and the Hot & Sour (just not tasty). I had to pour lots of Braggs soy sauce to add flavor. This was not the worse Chinese food we've had, but it's not something that we'll go out of my way to purchase again. On the plus side, the staff were super pleasant & helpful. They added warmth to the restaurant; however, that can only take you so far when it comes to the actual meal experience. I'm at the mandarin house writing this review. I really enjoyed the food. The service is excellent that only rates 100percent with me. Very clean. When i normally go out for seafood i can hardly eat it, it's either to spicy or to salty. It was just right for me. I have to admit my review is solely based one 1 thing, wanton soup. I have been living in Maryland for a little over a year and have had the hardest time finding good wanton soup. Back home I could get good wanton soup at any Chinese takeout place. Wanton soup is my go to when I am feeling under the weather. I have tried numerous places in Columbia and surrounding areas and it has all been terrible. I was under the weather and happen to be on Rt 1 grabbing a few things. I opened up yelp and found this place and decided to try it. When I got home I opened the container and the smell was good. I sipped on the broth and it reminded me of home! I was so happy! The staff was a tiny bit standoffish at first but while I was waiting one of the men who worked there started chatting with me, he seemed friendly. Our last visit to Mandarin House was very disappointing. My husband ordered the steamed dumplings and kung pao chicken to go. The dumplings were overly chewy and the filling was lacking flavor. The king pao chicken tasted like it had been sitting out all day. It was on the dry side and like the dumplings, didn't taste fresh. I'm guessing we hit them on a bad night and the food had been sitting for a long time. I hope this place is not going downhill. My husband (who speaks Chinese) says that they speak Chinese here. Very good flavorful Chinese food. We had a Pu Pu platter and vegetable lo-mein. Everything was just as good as we get back in Rhode Island. The platter included an egg roll, and two each of fried chicken wings, shrimp, spared ribs, fried wontons and cho-cho beef sticks (beef teriyaki to me). We enjoyed everything except the egg roll was just okay. The restaurant is dated but clean and it gives you a very authentic Chinese restaurant vibe. The staff are very friendly and the food came out quickly. Also I suggest the scorpion bowl, it wasn't as good as the RI ones but pretty close. We will definitely return here! read more

OOOOOOOOH how I miss Mandarin House! The best Kung-Pao anywhere. All of the food is amazing and the price is reasonable. I could eat there seven days a week and not get tired of it. I've been going here for years. Not fancy, but they have the best Chinese food around. I get the Orange Chicken, General Tso's, Singapore Rice Noodles and Fried Crabmeat Wontons almost every time. The spring rolls, lettuce wrapped chicken and steamed vegetable dumplings are also very good. Most people carry-out but they do have a eat-in area as well. I don't understand why some people are complaining about the price since the portions are large and they aren't any more expensive than any of the other restaurants in the area. The only criticism I have is that they don't deliver, but the drive is worth it! read more

One word..Roaches!!! I recently moved to the area and one Saturday night my boyfriend wanted to try this restaurant since it was close to the house and he wasn't feeling good that day. I was skeptical being that the restaurant was on a strip of stores that looked old. I'm use to nicer restaurants but I agreed and we walked over there about an hour before the closed and the gentleman seated us. As I was sliding into the booth a roach started crawling up on the table and I jumped up and immediately walked out. The waiter was looking at us so I told him I saw a roach and he didn't seem to care. He just said ok and stayed exactly where he was so I'm pretty sure he was use to seeing them. I used to frequent this restaurant since it's close to home. I had a falling-out back in December of 2011. Long story short, I ordered over $250 worth of food for a family Christmas dinner, and one of the dishes (Hunan Shrimp) smelled fishy. Everyone said that it smelled like old fish. I called the restaurant about the dish and their response was "there's nothing wrong with our shrimp." That's all I got from them. Now, fast forward almost 3 years later, I figured give them another try. I took some friends visiting from CO for a quick dinner. It was Saturday night and the restaurant is open until 10:30pm. When we arrived at 9:45, we were immediately greeted with an attitude. We were quickly seated and were told that they close at 10:30. We ordered our drinks, appetizers and dinner. The waiter brought an iced tea and a coke, but all we ordered was an iced tea and water. When we told him that the we didn't order the coke, he pulled out his sheet of notes and said "no, you did order the coke!" The waiter brought out our soup and while we were eating the soup, the spring rolls and egg rolls showed up. Then, the food came to the table, and we hadn't even finished our soup. The food came out very quickly, we barely had time to chew our food before the rest of it came out. And, by the time we started eating the main course, the food was cold because it had been sitting for a good 10 minutes before we ready to eat it. We felt very rushed by the waiting staff and restaurant owner. As we were eating our spring rolls, the waiter brought us the check. I hadn't even signed the receipt or put my card out, he would come back to the table and try to take the bill from us. Mind you, we were still eating, and we had just started eating. At this point it was only 10:00. At 10:30, they turned off all the lights in the restaurant. He came back to the table and told us that they are now closed. I get it. They've been working since 11am if not earlier and they're ready to go home. But, I've been working all day too and this was a treat for me not to cook or clean after dinner. And, it's not like the dinner was free. The bill came close to $60!!! Shame on them! After spending that kind of money, I would have liked to be able to sit around and actually share my fortune with my friends and eat my fortune cookie! Here's my problem...it's a locally owned restaurant as opposed to the chain. We had a choice to venture to PF Chang's or to the little restaurant down the street. We chose the little restaurant to support local business owners. They advertise that they're open till 10:30. That means to me that we can come in at 10:15 and expect to be served until we are finished eating not when they are finished serving. They should change their hours to 10:00 if they don't want to stay open past 10:30! Terrible business owners, terrible service and terrible attitude. I would NEVER go back again. Spite me once, shame on you, spite me twice, shame on me! I guess now it's time to find another local Chinese restaurant that values their customers and the business. Avoid this place. The quality of the food has degraded significantly since the original owner sold the restaurant a few years ago. I've been going to this restaurant for over 15 years. My last experience about a year ago wasn't positive so I stayed away. I recently ordered to give the place the benefit of the doubt and this time I was more than disappointed. The hot and sour soup was too thick due to excess corn starch. The noodles that they gave with the soup smelled bad and were full of oil. The chicken dish we had did not taste like Kung pao Chicken. The broccoli was cooked perfectly (I like mine cooked so its still crisp) and chicken tasted fine but seemed like there should be more. However, flavor of brown sauce was bland. Shrimp Fried rice was on dry side and didn't have a cohesive flavor... tasted like rice with egg, onions and small shrimp. wonton soup was flavorful as other said I should go to 2 stars since they CHARGED 25c for a thimble sized takeout of their house hot mustard instead of comping it given the minuscule size. Others have said the carry out was just Ok but sit-down was good. I'm a crispy beef fan so if I'm out and have no other idea what I want I'll give that a try. read more
