I had to ask for water, I had to go up to the register twice to ask them to refill my water, I asked for hot tea, they charged my $3.95 for hot tea. wow, all chinese restaurants give you tea as part of your meal. Lunch menu was pretty skimpy for $12.95. I won't be returning anytime soon for terrible service and expensive water with a tea bag in it. Pork schezuan was mediocre, nothing to write home about. I don't order Chinese food often so I went straight to Yelp to find a local spot I can order from. I called in my order and it was ready and waiting when I arrived. The woman who rang me up seemed friendly enough and didn't mind me asking for extra soy sauce. Parking is plentiful it's located in a shopping center so you will have no problem finding a spot. They have a few tables and chairs inside for you to dine in but it seemed to be more common to grab and go from what I saw on my quick trip. For a good lunch spot I would say they're perfect. Mandarin House Restaurant is very near to my job. The service is great and the food is always consistent. I have been patronizing the business for about five years and while the prices have gone up a bit to address inflation, they have remained relatively stable and affordable. This is important, because I don't want to break the bank during my lunch break. I always call in my order and within the 15-20 minutes it takes me to arrive at the restaurant. my order is hot and ready. While I have tried many items on the lunch menu specifically, I LOVE the pepper steak! The dish is very flavorful and is the perfect portion for lunch. They also give you an eggroll. I really wanted to like the food because the staff was extremely professional and friendly. Unfortunately, the dishes I ordered didn't meet my expectations--perhaps I ordered the wrong items. I tried the Shrimp Egg Foo Young, Shrimp Fried Rice, and Beef and Broccoli. The Shrimp Egg Foo Young was not good, and I couldn't finish it. It seemed to be made with canned bean sprouts rather than fresh ones, which gave it a bitter taste, and there appeared to be very little shrimp--about one shrimp per patty, from what I could tell. I didn't eat enough to be certain. The Beef and Broccoli was very tough, though the seasoning was acceptable. The Shrimp Fried Rice was okay but a bit greasy. The standout item was the egg drop soup. Ordered 3 simple things- wonton soup- very bland but salty with heavy wontons, spare ribs- worst I've ever had- dry, burned and hard . Tasted like they were old and warmed up. Today I actually had time to calculate the cost of my order, realized that the total I paid was $10 more than the prices on Yelp's menu. The other food I ordered was Supreme Crispy Eggplant, but it was so sockie n coated with thick batter and as sweet as sugar, the Salt & Pepper seafood was also coated with thick batter. The same young man( looked like a teenager, his parents must be the owners, that's why I didn't bother to ask to speak to the manager or owner). He sounded very cocky when I addressed the price difference and said we never had a problem, we haven't updated the Yelp menu for over a year, customers have a copy of our menu". "That is misleading since I ordered from Yelp menu & it's my first time" I said. He hung up on me and I had to call back, he had me on hold n then pick up. Ge did say sorry twice. I asked "What are you going to do about this?" "We never had any issue, we always cooked those the same way, you should had call the same day" he said. "We were hungry n had no other food n I only had time to check today. Do you not care about your customers?" I asked, but he said nothing. I told him that I will never go back to that restaurant n hung up. This is a good example of a business who have a bad FRONT OF HOUSE person to run its business. Have you experience moments when you received your takeout at home n the food tasted bad, but ate it anyway n didn't want to take the trouble to call n spend another 30/45 minutes on the phone n drive back there?? There's better restaurants in this neighborhood. First I was mislead with the price, second food was bad, third it just takes your money, forth whether you like your food or not, they will do nothing but give you an attitude when you complain. We went as a group of four adults and two children, with a reservation. The restaurant was perhaps half full. We were seated promptly, but had to wait even for water glasses. Even after we got to order, the food was brought out piecemeal over the next 50 minutes, so that, despite having a reservation, it was a full hour after we arrived before we could all eat. If only the food had been worth the wait. If you pay attention to the negative reviews, you'll see a common thread about the quality of their meat. Pay attention! I had the orange beef and it was pretty much inedible -- stringy, sproingy, 90% fat and gristle. We weren't given knives, so I had to try to tear the "beef" apart with a fork and a rice spoon. I usually order from Hunan China but they were closed. I ordered here for the first time last night. I ordered the wonton soup, spicy tangy wonton, pad Thai and shumai. The wonton soup broth was salty to me. This is probably the only place that has spicy tangy wonton which was good. The pad Thai was tasty, much better than our usual place where we order. The shumai was okay. You definitely need the sauce since the shumai is bland by itself. I will have to order again and taste the other dishes and update my review. A very good traditional style Chinese restaurant where you can actually dine inside the restaurant. Nowadays, most Chinese restaurants are take out only. But sometimes it is nice to actually eat in the restaurant like I used to when I was a child. The interior of the restaurant is aptly decorated in the style of a Chinese restaurant. Some of the bench seats are worn down, and are in need of replacement, but do not let that turn you away. The food is fantastic. Every meal I have enjoyed at this restaurant was well made, and delicious, and served in family portions. The General Tso's chicken was amazing, as well as the chicken and broccoli. The egg rolls and hot and sour soup were top notch also. I rate most Chinese restaurants by there hot and sour soup, and this one did not disappoint. I've been going to Mandarin House for probably well over thirty years. They are the only place that I can find hot, crispy beef, and as far as that goes, they never let me down. The portions are huge, and the food tastes fresh. our waiter was excellent and he has been there. I believe the entire time. I guess the only negative if there is any is that the building is really old and hasn't been remodeled in forever. But I go there for the food and not the decoration. read more

Came here spur of the moment for lunch on a Sunday. My mom gets takeout here all the time and I was in town visiting. Everything was good. But they did not serve lunch portions or pricing on Sunday. So be aware of that if you're on a budget or would like a smaller portion. We started out with their pupu platter which was actually very fun to eat. If I was here with friends for a drink that would be fun to split with one of their massive fishbowl specialty cocktails. The platter was fun because there was a good variety of fried food (wings, wonton, egg rolls, giant shrimp)and food on a stick (grilled beef and bbq ribs). And it was extra festive because it spun around and there was an old school little hibachi in the center so you could heat things up and basically set them on fire. That's always fun! For the entree my mom got the cold sliced chicken with spicy peanut sauce. It's an appetizer but it was a good size when mixed with the other things we shared. The chicken was poached perfectly and placed on a bed of julienne cucumbers. But the sauce was not spicy at all. Good peanut flavor but no spice even though I could see the drizzle of chili oil. And the other entree was the roast pork with broccoli. Like everything else, it was freshly prepared. It was basically sliced bbq pork with a ton of sauce. If I ordered it again, I'd order the sauce on the side. So, in general a nice experience. Good food. Friendly service. Fun food and drink options. The restaurant is a little dated in an older strip mall but it's clean and obviously a neighborhood favorite. read more

I'm new to Maryland and wanted to find a sone good Chinese Food! Found this spot through Yelp and it had good reviews so I called to order. I ordered Pepper Steak and Chicken Fried rice. I didn't care for the Pepper Steak because the Beef was very Tuff/tough and hard to Chew. So I picked all the beef out and threw away (wasted my money SMH) the CFR was ok. Probably won't return. The food was hot and fresh but could be more tasty for me compared to other Chinese I've had. We had combination fried rice, wonton soup, order of eggs rolls and shrimp and broccoli which needed way more shrimp. Way too much broccoli left over that we had to throw away. Glad we tried it but will continue trying to find a Chinese Restaurant that meets my standards in this area. This is the only reason for 3 stars. I ordered Shrimp with Lobster Sauce and Pork with Broccoli for lunch. After I got home, my husband noticed that his meal was wrong. I called to let them know and they accused me of ordering something different (Pork with garlic sauce) I would never order pork with garlic sauce and it was annoying that she kept arguing with me. Finally, she told me to bring back the wrong order and she will replace it with the correct order. Make sure you have them repeat the order to you or order online. The shrimp with lobster sauce didn't have much flavor, but it was fine. It was ready quickly. Sooo...I got three things...a lunch special that was something I never tried before, steamed dumplings, and shrimp lo mein...the dumplings were practically inedible, I spit them out and trashed them immediately...probably should have gotten fried but regardless the dough tasted horrible. The lunch special was Szechuan style shredded beef, and it wasn't bad but I didn't like it much...it came with an egg roll which was perfectly crispy and delicious...and the Lo mein was on par with what I expected. Was not good at all! Where do I start, egg roll dry and flavorless with absolutely NO meat(made sure that we clarified that we wanted the one with meat), I only ate 1/3 of it. We ordered general tso shrimp and chicken, with a combination fried rice. The containers were packed with chicken and the fried rice, but of course the shrimp container was filled with broccoli and very few shrimp. My husband had the shrimp so I can't speak to that meal but the general tso chicken and combination fried looked good but it was not good. No flavor at all! The large rice had about 3 shrimp, lots of chicken, pork and very surprisingly beef, it was extremely bland as well as the general tso chicken. I added soy sauce and it just made it salty, could not finish the plate I made myself. This meal was an expensive waste of money, I just could not enjoy it. I will not be going back. Customer service was good (we did carryout), that is why I gave it 2 stars. Sorry, I was super hungry and then disappointed after a few fork fulls, I did not take pictures. read more
