The crew at Mandarin House have been one of the foodie heroes of this pandemic. Hugged near the end of a quiet shopping strip, the crew are always friendly and the food is consistently on point. My favorites are the salt and pepper chicken wings, combo kung pao, and extra loaded subgum wonton soup while my vegetable-hating partner enjoys a triple delight loaded up with extra meat thanks to a chef that doesn't mind customizing orders. Server seemed confused as to which table to bring food to at times (just three tables used on a Saturday). He was having trouble taking orders also. In summary, the food was average and the waiter service was fair. The food was nothing to get off the highway for. I am just being honest. My palette is pretty fair and I know good food. Finally found a neighborhood Chinese place I like and will be a regular customer here. Tried the Taiwanese noodles, Salt and Pepper Shrimp (no shell) and hot and crispy beef. All awesome. I had all of the food to go for pick up and was very pleased at the huge portions for each order in the take out box. The noodles were hot and had that great wok stir fry taste. The S&P shrimp was exactly the way it should be: tender shrimp, crispy with lots of garlic chips + jalapeño seasoning. My first visit was on Christmas Eve around lunch so it was pretty quiet in the restaurant. We ordered fried wontons, chicken lettuce wraps and shrimp fried rice. I thoroughly enjoyed the hot tea that was provided, since it was super cold outside. All the food was delicious but I was surprised that an additional cost was charged for iceberg lettuce. I mean I was only provided 3 iceberg lettuce leaves to begin with. All in all I would return to try some other dishes. read more

How the mighty have fallen. Collapsed standards is shameful. Over 20 years ago, I wrote a letter to the editor at "The Laurel Leader," praising the hidden gem, Mandarin House. No longer recommended. Something has changed and not for the better. Sweet and sour chicken that is just old (elderly) frozen chicken tenders with a separate container of bottled sauce. Obviously the same elderly chicken is foisted off with different sauces for differently named dishes. Of course legitmate preparation is nothing like this. Pepper beef with tasteless tough meat, when it used to be savory, almost buttery. Shrimp fried rice. Decently flavored. Shrimp population = exactly ONE. New owners, different managers? Does it matter? Go elsewhere. This beloved place has died for anyone with taste and standards. read more

I have been ordering from Mandarin House for over 21 years. It's not the absolute best Chinese food in the world, but it is good and dependable, and they make some awesome shrimp toast. I would normally give them 4 or 5 stars. But in the last few weeks something has happened. A few weeks ago,I got the shrimp toast and it was very flat, the bread was hard and greasy and the shrimp was rubbery and smelled fishy. Then,today I ordered fried wontons and shrimp fried rice. The fried wonton was so hard I could hardly bite into it and they're usually filled with cream cheese and crab, but these had a tiny hard ball of something gray with no discernable flavor, except it was fishy. And the shrimp in the fried rice looked good but had the consistency of mashed potatoes. I'm afraid to eat their food now. Don't want to get food poisoning. Very disappointing. read more

For apps we had fried dumplings, spicy wontons, shrimp toast, ribs, and lettuce wraps ( they need to give more lettuce, so might order extra), but all were tasty. For entrees we had triple delight ordered spicy, hot crispy beef, and mandarin chicken no vegetables. They were able to accommodate all our special request. All entrees exceeded our expectations with freshness, taste, and portion! We will certainly be coming back even though it's a good 35-40 minute drive for me and for that I give it a 5!! This place is currently my new favorite Chinese food spot. It's located in a strip mall and it doesn't look like much from the outside, but don't let that deter you. The restaurant is clean, the staff is friendly, the food is really good and the best part -- it's not greasy! I've been going to another place for awhile and I didn't realize that you could have lo mien without a pool of oil/grease at the bottom of the bowl. The egg rolls are delicious and not greasy at all. The crispy spicy beef was cooked perfectly; it had the right amount of crunch and wasn't chewy at all. The food tastes fresh and I absolutely loved the wonton soup. I love that they give you those crispy things to put in your soup. They also end the meal with orange slices and fortune cookies. Mmm now I want Chinese. read more

Being a new transplant to Laurel, I decided to try Mandarin House last Sunday after finding out that Grace Garden is closed every Sunday :0( So, hey, let's give it a go! For starters we had shrimp toast ( I love it! and not everyone makes shrimp toast) One word to describe the chewy, shrimp flavored sesame chunk of fried dough I received; GROSS! It ended up in the garbage... However, the crispy duck is mmm mmm good, nice and moist, flavor was great, and being a lover of sauce, I should have requested more! My son had the Kung Pao chicken; not a fan at all, maybe it's just not our thing, but the sauce needed more flavor, we ended up splitting the duck... So, for me it definitely wasn't worth the trip to the other side of Laurel. But you'll never know unless you try. Maybe next time I'll take Sheiva R's advice and try the Happy Family. read more

After having been to over 30 countries and travelling the world, Mandarin House is still the best Chinese food I've ever had. This good be because my taste buds are conditioned to liking Mandarin House from a young age (like your mother's cooking) or it could be that it is quite the best Chinese food ever. The prices are great and the food is unmatched. I will die a loyal customer, inshAllah! One memory- It was the blizzard of 1996, our electricity was out and we had no food. After a few days, we were able to drive, but most stores were still closed, except for the Mandarin house! It also had no light or electricity, but they cooked everything on a gas stove. I remember being a little girl and looking through the kitchen window of the Mandarin House, just seeing a bright fire flame from the stove. The chef had cooked an exquisite meal, with no light, and was feeding hundreds of families who were coming by for food because of the blizzard. Despite the bad conditions, Mandarin House was open for business and the cook's meal was as good as it's ever been. This place is amazing. read more

This is my favorite Chinese restaurant...period. The food is almost always excellent. I try different things very often and it is rare that it is not amazing. The wonton soup has real flavor unlike the soup at most Chinese restaurants. The Marango Delight is probably my favorite thing on the menu, followed by the Singapore Rice noddles. They have the best egg rolls anywhere. My only complaint is they changed the recipe for the mustard and it is no longer HOT. They made it into American yellow mustard. read more

I love Mandarin House! I've been going to this restaurant for over 10 years now and have yet to replace it as my favorite Chinese restaurant. I find myself comparing every Chinese meal I have with the food from Mandarin House and am thoroughly disappointed each time. Unfortunately for me, this restaurant has set my expectations at a high level that I doubt can be reached. The same, friendly staff has been there for several years. They try to get to know their customers and have many regulars. Whenever I'm there to pick up my takeout, the employees will frequently greet the other customers by their names and ask about their family and such. Also, when you dine in, they will always stop by to see how the meal is and if you need anything else. The food is so good! Like I said, I have yet to find Chinese food outside of Mandarin House that I am satisfied with. I've had a variety of dishes. Some appetizers I've had are barbequed pork (yum!) and steamed dumplings. I always get the hot and sour soup, which is warm and delicious. Some entrees I've gotten include Kung Pao Chicken, Moo Shu Pork, Scallops in Garlic Sauce, Shrimp Lo Mein, Schezwan Tofu, Schezwan Green Beans, Chicken in Black Bean Sauce among many more. I think the only dish I've ever had and didn't enjoy was the Crispy Beef (although I wasn't the one who ordered it). I'd say the prices are fair and the lunch specials are a big deal! My advice is to order food for lunch so you save money. Unfortunately, they don't have delivery so I guess it's a good thing I live so close by. :) This is a great place to go with your family and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to try some great Chinese food. read more

Sure, there are eat-all-u-can buffet restaurants around town, but their food is usually greasy, over cooked, gotta pay for hot tea too. Mandarin serves fresh cooked food straight from the kitchen as ordered. Tasty, hot, and fast service too. Their salt & pepper squid is fried correctly, so it does not come out oily. Their szechuan string beans are not over cooked or undercooked, just enough crunch. They have extensive menu to choose from. The portions are big, and reasonably priced. read more

I would actually rate the sit in restaurant a 5. The staff was friendly and the service was good. My server, however, gave me the wrong order, but the first time ever I was actually okay with it....because the FOOD WAS DELICIOUS!!! Sadly though, the take out was the worst I ever had!! How could that be? I would only rate the take out two stars but I'm going to give the restaurant and take out a second chance before actually giving it such a low rating. Definitely go in to eat. Almost like they have two chefs cooking the same thing with different recipes-- and one chef is a solid 4 star and one probably moonlights as a fry cook from McDonald's. It looked & tasted like 3 day old spiral ham with a grease taste overpowering it. Not spicy at all. I used to go here when I lived at the apartments down the street, so this place was just a short walk to get takeout. And I remember loving their eggplant and garlic sauce entree. I always got their hot and sour soup which was also really good. I now live in Millersville and haven't been able to find a chinese restaurant that I like as much as them. I thought eggplant and garlic sauce was a typical vegetarian entree, but apparently that is hard to find over here. I don't have a reason to ever be in that area of Laurel again, but if some reason I were, I would definitely eat there again. read more

Never ever ever again! We used to frequent this spot when we lived in the area but that was almost 4 years ago. The quality and taste of food has since decreased. We ordered from here two days ago and that evening we ate it. By 10pm my stomach was in so much pain and I developed chills and fever. I went to the ER thinking I had gallstones bc the pain was stabbing in my right side. I couldn't sleep all night so at 4 am we rushed into the hospital. They scanned me for everything in a CT Scan and couldn't find anything other than possible food poisoning. Sure enough I came home and started having severe diarrhea. The fever still lingered.
