We went to Mangiamo and they were closed for business. We're so excited that Fawn Pizza just opened in Aptos (above Deluxe Foods, in the former Mangiamo space)! The food is absolutely amazing. The pizza had a wonderfully light, airy crust -- the kind you'd find in Italy -- perfectly crisp yet soft inside. We also had the most delicious salad made with fresh arugula, shaved fennel, toasted hazelnuts, and a bright citrus dressing that tied everything together beautifully. My husband loved the stuffed mushrooms, and I really enjoyed a lovely Pinot Noir. He really liked Humble Sea German lager, which he said was fantastic. The vibe is just as great as the food. They had a DJ playing fun retro '90s favorites (some of my old favorites!) you had me at a tribe called quest. We met the new owner, Carlos -- who we had the pleasure of meeting -- told us they'll have DJs on Fridays and Saturdays. Such a fun touch! The space has an awesome collection of old books, vintage photos, and vinyl from Carlos's personal DJ collection. It gives the whole place a warm, creative, welcoming feel. We showed up Sunday at 7pm and were rudely told "no eating inside. Take-out only". Considering it was freezing out and no place to sit, we moved on to a much nicer and friendlier restaurant in Aptos village. Won't be going out of my way again for Mangiamo's. Went to Mangiamo last night to get takeout. This was our first time ever having pizza from there. We were skeptical but open to trying it because it's so close to home and we were stopping for groceries at Deluxe anyway. I would give this place 4-stars if it weren't for the fact that the employees making the pizzas were not wearing masks. The cashier was great and wore his mask properly the entire time and sanitized his hands before taking our order. One woman in the kitchen had a mask on but it was so loose and low that her nose and mouth were both exposed while she worked on pizzas. The other guy making pizzas didn't wear a mask at all. Ordinarily it would be NBD but in times of covid it's concerning. The pizzas were a pleasant surprise. They are thin crust and crispy (great for thin crust fans) and there is large variety of pizzas to choose from. We ended up ordering a large pizza: half garlic chicken (Olive oil, garlic sauce, chicken, sun dried tomatoes w/ mozzarella and provolone) and half Strombeta (Red sauce ,salami, pancetta, Canadian bacon, pepperoncini, artichokes, feta with mozzarella and provolone). I heated up my pizza slices in the microwave before eating any. Hopefully that did something. read more

I wanted quick and easy on a Saturday night and chose Mangiamo, which is nearby. I had eaten here twice before and both times it was terrific, and so I was a bit worried to see some relatively low overall ratings on Yelp. Well, I had my 3rd Mangiamo tonight and it was ... Delicious. Yes, the crust is thin, but that's New York style. It was a bit expensive, too: $32 for a large Mangia Meat. But the pizza was covered with delicious toppings, and my wife and I were barely able to eat half of it. Leftover pizza in the fridge? Always recommended. Next time I want a takeout pizza, I'll go again to Mangiamo. read more

Its good pizza but very little amounts of slices, this is a style of a pizza place you would find more on the east coast. Service was great and it was easy to place the order over line. My biggest issue with this place and the reason it won't get five stars and I won't eat this as much anymore is their calzone. I love calzone and I loved it but the last few bites were impossible to eat because it had something that had a crunch like a rock. Sorry we humans don't eat rocks in are meal. Whoever cooked this should feel ashamed because that is not great work ethic. I'm a fan of New Haven style pizza so I seek out tasty thin crunchy crust. Based on other reviews I thought I'd try Mangiamo. I ordered pick up. The restaurant smelled good when I walked in- very important. I got one chicken Parmesan and one margarita. The chk parm was pretty good. The margarita was a bit bland with too much sauce and not enough buffalo mozzarella cheese and basil. In both cases the crust was a bit too thin and crunchy. It was more like a cracker with not enough flavor and no chewiness. Between the cracker-crust and the modest size I was underwhelmed, especially for the hefty price of $70 for two large pies. But good pizza is tough to find so I'd probably get the chk parm again. read more

We were trying to go to another restaurant and it was full, so we found this place. It looked nice, and wasn't crowded. We were greeted with a "how can we help you?" Which was great, but threw me off because I was walking into a restaurant and I don't know why else we would be there.... the pizza came and was hot. We had pepperoni. It was just ok. Like I didn't really care or not care for it. We got the garlic cheese bread and that was like cheese covered bread sopping in grease/butter and was tasty, but now an hour later I still have garlic breath beyond belief. The house wine is some of the best I've tasted and Wednesday night you can get a bottle for $10! Wednesday night there's also a great blues singer. His name is Dave Campbell and he's there every Wednesday. AND the pizza is terrific. What a great little place to hang out and get top notch service, food, drink AND music! Inside or outside. I'm revising this review to note that Mangiamo's has expanded their live music. Now they have folks playing 6 nights a week. I think it's the only place in Aptos that can claim such a thing. Mon-Thurs from 6-8 boasts David Paul Campbell. A pro touring and session guitar player who moved from LA to Santa Cruz in 2007 for the surfing and KPIG. He plays blues and jazz, Celtic and jug band stuff and whatever comes to mind. He also takes requests. It's a great way to spend the dinner hour. He also plays some Friday nights so check the online calendars in Santa Cruz Weekly and places like that because Mangiamo's lists their acts in all of them in Santa Crux and San Jose. Friday night you get George Christos from 6-9 PM. A local guy playing everything from James Taylor to The Eagles with a fine helping of The Beatles tossed in for good measure. Saturday night is for jazz fans and Roberto-Howell is there playing some straight ahead jazz that makes for a wonderful Saturday Date Night. The place is family friendly and the prices are reasonable and the house wine is still top of the line. The pizza is just grand and if you prefer you can request their sweet sauce - thought that spicy stuff just rocks, IMO. They've added some desserts and coffee too. And if you're too tied up to get out, they'll deliver to the house. But if you do that, you don't get the music. They're open Sunday but it's food and drink only. One of the best/ worst parts about traveling for youth sports is checking out the neighborhood eats. Unlike our soccer game that day, we scored big time in Aptos! The Aptos soccer parents were friendly, always a plus, so I asked if there was a local pizza place to take the kids. We were told to check out Pizza Amore and given directions. OK so this is the real test to see just how friendly they are. Well - Aptos soccer parents did us right! Very cool Pizza Amore is now Mangiamo's. OK - well, we were there and hungry, oh yeah and there is a wine bar and my husband was driving so....why not! The facility is a little small so I had some hesitation walking in with four boys, aged ranging from 10 - 15. We were warmly welcomed! ++ We were given menus and selected a pizza. We also ordered a Greek salad. I also treated myself to a glass of the Sangiovese. Excellent choices! The salad was served with the dressing on the side and was wonderful. Lots of spinach, red onion, feta etc. The pizza was excellent. We ordered a half cheese and BBQ Chicken. BBQ Chicken is typically not one of favorites because many places smother the pizza so all you tasted was the BBQ Sauce. Not Mangiamo's it was yummy! I would absolutely order again I really enjoyed my glass of Sangiovese - my only regret was I failed to to note the bottle. I would love to purchase some for home. Pizza is a very personal choice, I am not a pizza fan. I loved pizza as a child, it tasted so good. But as an adult, not a fan. I think it's because it doesn't taste how I remember it should. But I was giving a gift certificate to Mangiamo, so my husband and went. My first reaction was, are they still in business? Very small place, it only has 4 tables 16 chairs in all. No pictures on the walls, not sure what kind of business it was. At the front bar we helped by a pleasant lady, the only one I saw for awhile, we ordered, decided to eat there, about 5 min later a guy came out from the back. He got to work, pretty soon the small place was smelling delicious. Soon after the lady brought out our pizza, thin crust, but not too thin where you can't hold it. The edge crust, which was thin, but perfectly cooked, nice and crunchy. This pizza was perfectly cooked! There was nothing I could say wrong about it. If I could give negative stars I would! We were here picking up a really expensive pizza (that turned out burnt on the bottom with little amounts of toppings.) the owner (we asked for a manager) he just yelled at us that since we ate some of it we were lying. Oh well, I left not wanting to get yelled at. Then I was dropping my daughter off at school I saw the same guy in a truck, yelling at the librarian and some other person. (I remembered the yell well) Just saying FU to them over and over also used the C word at the woman!!! I hope I never cross paths with that man. The pizza is bad but the owner is scary!!!! I was excited to try a real authentic pizzeria since there are none along Highway 1 from Santa Cruz to Monterey. What a dissapointment. The pizza was the correct "thickness", but the flavor was way below sub-par, the toppings were not high quality, and the crust had a cornmeal crumb dusting that made it taste "cheap". Good prices on the drinks, however (fair and not inflated). We had Ceasar side salads, and the lettuce was wilty. The dressing was great, however. We had to wait about 45 minutes to get our Pizza, and I knew something was up when I smelled something burning. I looked over at the kitchen, and the chef was standing over our pie looking at it as it smoked away in a black burned mess. They finally got our order out, and tried to be very polite about the situation (which was appreciated). Overall, the quality is just not very good, and for $28 I expected more from a half cheese and half margharita pie..... disappointed. read more

We feel lucky to have found this place. We have lived in the area for 5 years and never tried it before. The staff was very friendly and accommodating and the pizza was really friggin good! We are Pizza my Heart snobs when it comes to good pies but Mangiamo's may steal some of that passion. My boyfriend and I go here all of the time to get the dinner special. It includes a house bottle of wine, bruschetta, and a large pizza. Now, I can see why some are unhappy with the thin crust, and yes the prices are quite high, but I still drive all the way from Santa Cruz in bumper-to-bumper traffic... Not because I'm crazy, or dumb, but because the pizza from Maniamo's is truly different. First of all, the pizza isn't gross, and cardboard-like. Actually, the sauce is quite spicy, and the thin crust is great for NOT making you feel bloated like a Thanksgiving Day Parade Balloon, 20 minutes after eating it. Best of all, they have wine!!! Perhaps it's cheaper to buy a bottle elsewhere, but they actually have decent wine there, and wine goes better with their pizza than beer (shocking I know!!) We used to go to the one on the Westside all the time, but I suppose rent got to be too high with the planned remodel of that Safeway. When they packed up and moved to the Aptos location, we were bummed, but drove anyway. Would be great if they would eventually open a place in mid-town. They used to remember us by name, as we were the people who came in for what we deemed "crack-pizza". He loved that we came all the way from Santa Cruz, and I think he knew we were true fans, so he often gave us discounts. If you want a $10 pizza, this is not the place for you. Give Dominos a call instead. If you want a thick crust, order a Deep Dish pizza from another place (like BJs, but wait this is Santa Cruz, and we don't let corporations, or franchises over here). But if you want truly good pizza, that isn't run-of-the-mill, come on down. Just remember to bring many American Dollars with you. read more
