Let me begin this by saying this, Corinne really saved my self image. I have been getting my hair done for years - typically a quick balayage and nothing too crazy. I moved from Seattle a year ago to a small town in southern Maryland and have experienced nothing short of disasters with my hair from accidental blonde to accidental red/brunette over the span of months. My hair was left looking orange and sad and no one could fix it. I visited Corinne for an in depth consultation and was so impressed with her knowledge, assuredness, and her ability to communicate clear expectations. While visiting family in Richmond, I went to Mango per my sister-in-law's recommendation and after reading the great reviews on yelp. I spoke with someone over the phone to schedule, and Jessica came highly recommended. When I arrived, Jessica was friendly, attentive, and a pro at what she does. She asked me thorough questions, provided options and suggestions, and waited to hear my feedback before proceeding with the haircut. During the cut, she explained what she was doing and made conversation to ease my anxiety after my recent bad cut. She also explained different techniques and what nuances to consider when cutting my hair, which is thick, Asian hair. The end product was my hair looking full and healthy again. After my hairstylist of many years passed away unexpectedly it took me several salons and several stylist over the course of a few years to find the right person to color and cut my hair. I found my new hair stylist at Mango and I could not be happier with the service that she provides, as well as her beautiful personality. On my first visit she truly studied my hair and asked me many questions and listened to my concerns. We looked at some old pictures of me and my hair and discussed goals for the color and what I wanted for my hair. That was probably the most impressive consultation I've had with a hair stylist ever. That is something that you can expect, more than likely, from all of the stylists who work at Mango Salon. Now here comes the harsh part. This level of service comes at a price. I have never been to a salon that charged ala carte when not getting a haircut. Meaning that, if you're going in for color, you're going to pay for the highlights the lowlights the toner the conditioning treatment , even to have your hair blow dried. You may feel a little bit nickel-and-dimed at Mango, but again you're paying for more than just a haircut and a blow-dry and you're paying for more than just color, you're paying for the skills and the time that it takes to create a hair color or hair design that is going to fit your look and lifestyle best. That being said if you go in for color and you want to save, say $45, you can blow dry your hair yourself. They supply the tools and the space for you to do so. So if you have a late appointment and you're not going out and you're not going to be seen and it doesn't really matter if it looks like you just walked out of an expensive salon, that is an option. And if you're going in for color and will be going out for dinner afterwards, if you don't mind paying for the blow dry, you will look like a million bucks when you walk through the doors of the restaurant. Other things I like about Mango, is the texts they send you with appointment verification and reminders, I find that very useful. I give the styles a 5 but the manager and receptionist at the short pump location are terrible. Made an appointment a month in advance for my mom and I to have our hair done for my brothers WEDDING and when I called to confirm the time the day of they had no record of our appointment and then was told oh sorry we don't have anything available. That was it, didn't offer to check any other locations or offer any help. Then when talking to the manager a week or so later so she pretty much took no responsibility blaming me and then asked what I think she should do. On the phone with them I wasn't rude nor did I yell, then to find out they have band me from my normal location and favorite stylist. You don't get *just* a haircut here, you get a full spa experience. I normally don't care but so much about getting my hair dye touched up. It's just something I do, personal maintenance, if you will. At Mango it was a luxury service. The atmosphere is very bright, clean and relaxing. I was greeted promptly and they told me that the makeup artist was doing free makeovers and consultations. They gave me a tour of the studio that ended by the changing rooms and lockers so that I could get changed into the smock they provided and then put my top and purse into one of the (locked, free) lockers so that I didn't have to haul that stuff around with me. The girl who gave me the tour prepared a tea and left it with a little biscotti for me in the waiting room while I was changing. I was chilling out so much that I didn't notice when Melvin, my stylist, walked up to me. He had to say hello a few times before I really processed that he was talking to me. We had a nice consultation where he brushed out my hair, studied my hair color and gave recommendations for what we could do to fix a recent snafu from another stylist. We chatted amiably through the process and he never rushed me, even though he was running out of time before his next appointment, due to the seriously gigantic volume of hair I have. I have a pink streak in my hair. Mango doesn't have a pink color but Melvin really went above and beyond the call of duty to find a mixture of their existing Aveda dyes that would come out pink. He asked all the other stylists their opinion and even texted the "master stylist" who was off that day to see what he thought would work. The color ended up being lavender. A very attractive lavender though, I really liked it. They sat me in a small area to the side to let my dye take and I read some magazines. I was offered more refreshments while I was waiting. When it came time to wash the color out the shampoo girl was really nice. She took her time and gave me a full scalp/neck massage AND a hand massage. It was really nice and very relaxing. The problem: I got a serious sticker shock when I went to pay. With tip for Melvin and the shampoo girl the haircut was nearly 200$. My check book is crying. It's a total spa experience and what you get is definitely worth the price, it's just not a price I can afford. I got a discount because I was referred by a friend and they gave me a coupon for 10$ off the next time I'm in the salon but still! I don't think I'll be able to go back. Oh! Parking is weird. There's a very small lot out front that was full when I was there. I had to pull into the jewelers next door and park in the back of their lot where there are a few spaces for Mango. read more

I saw a mango salon on a friend's Snapchat. I saw her hair and it was exactly what I wanted done to mine. I had had a bad experience where the previous salon didn't take into consideration what I asked for and turned my hair into a reddish-brown. I came into Mango salon and I told Macy take this mess and get me as close to a blonde and dark brown balayage as you can get me. In one session, she did an amazing job. She was so patience with the amount of hair that I have and she color corrected, and gave me exactly what I hoped for. It was well worth the money and time. I wouldn't go anywhere else but Mango. The salon also greets you in such a welcoming manner. Soon as you come through the door they're asking if you want anything to drink or eat or if they can get anything for you. She finished up her client came to the reception area and took her next client. Still waiting until 3:50. Told one of the young girls at the front to tell me Kim would now be seeing me. My sister booked a birthday appointment here a month ago. She arrived today for her noon appointment at 12:08 and was turned away after being told her appointment was at 11:30. She then showed the salon her confirmation text clearly stating that the appointment was at noon and was still told the appointment had to be rescheduled. I understand she was a few minutes late due to a scheduling conflict from before but there should be a grace period. She's a shy person and would never tell you how much this broke her heart and impacted her ability to feel special and seen on her birthday. She's been to your salon and had a nice experience before but to be told she was over thirty minutes late to her appointment is simply untrue. First, they want my credit card to keep on file, they charge a deposit just to book an appointment, in order to get a perm (have had a thousand perms) I had to go for in for a consult that took 3 minutes in totality in order to book the appt for the service. First things first. I followed my stylist, Alison, here because I'm pretty sure no one else will ever get to cut my hair again. Now Mango is much larger than my previously salon and I'm not quite sure if I like that. It's less personal and funny enough feels more cramped (due to the fact that there are stations EVERYWHERE). The way they price color is odd and waxing prices are higher (though Alison again does such a stellar job with mine that I fork over the $$). Sadly I've found myself paying quite a bit more here overall than when I visited another salon. Not good. However there are a few things I do appreciate with this larger salon. You can get a locker to stow all your things so they aren't covered in hair after your cut, there is not only a scalp massage but also a hand massage, I've been digging the hot towel wrap, and there is a small off-street parking lot in back. Now if they would just include biscotti with a cup of hot tea when I visit like I used to get, I wouldn't mind the higher prices quite as much. read more

I've been going to Mango Salon and getting my hair cut and styled by Amanda for over 3 years. Without a doubt, this is my longest tenure in one place to get haircuts and for good reason. The folks at Mango run a very professional operation. The space is pretty and comfortable and they offer some very nice extras! For example, with men's cuts you can have the option to change into a complimentary t-shirt so you don't get clippings all over your clothes. Also, they offer a complimentary neck trim between haircuts to keep us looking as fresh as possible - those are quick and I can be in and out in usually 10 mins and refreshed for a couple more weeks. Parking at Mango is also a plus. They get close to full, but I have always been able to get a place in the front or back of the building. My favorite part is that for a few minutes, I get a very nice and expert haircut and I get to rest. I get a little facial while getting shampooed and the whole experience is very relaxing. Guys, treat yourselves and get in there. The extra couple bucks for the cut is more than worth it. read more

Amazing salon, just filled with amazing staff! So I've been going here for about a month now. Due to my job, I get a hair cut every week, but even if the cost is slightly higher than local super cuts or great clips, this place just makes me feel at home and the job done is phenomenal. Parking is not a problem and when you walk in, you're greeted by the receptionist with a warm welcome and offered drinks to accommodate your stay. Normally there's no wait for appointment, but Incase you do, there's a beautiful, well decorated waiting room. Not sure about the other stylists, but the stylist I go to is very friendly, very talkative, and of course her technical skill is on point. I'm sure a salon of this caliber would hire all staff like her. When I first got there, my stylist would be more of a consultant. Brain storming different styles and what would work before just jumping into sniping hair off. The stylist also gives you a hair wash and a facial treatment all included in the hair cut price. Yes to get a hair cut weekly here is more pricey than going to local barbers, but it's her whole package of technical skill and amazing customer service that makes me want to just come back. I was a Mango customer for a minute while in that awkward wandering phase where you lose your previous stylist because they get way too expensive and off you go in search of another. The customer service is good. The cuts and services are good. The perks (coupons and freebies) are nice. The salon itself is a bit small, the parking lot smaller. It's an Aveda salon... not my favorite products, but I can overlook that if everything else works. Mango just didn't work for me. I had to pay someone to watch my baby because my husband was not free for the second time. Children are known for their honesty and my children's responses when they saw my new hairdo said it all. My daughter yelped, "Your hair looks like carrot top!" while my son chimed in "Mom, you have a bowl on your head!" My husband, an adult (sometimes) remarked, "I'm sure we'll...em...you'll get used to it." After this COVID year, I wanted to contribute to locally-owned small businesses and I booked a haircut (and later added highlights) about a month ago with Mango Salon so I can get my hair done during our annual trip to Richmond to visit family and friends. Stephanie is a sweet girl who knows how to hold a pair of scissors but not how to wield one so what was supposed to be a short hairstyle akin to what many guys I know get at their "affordable" local barber shop turned into an uneven bowl cut with yellow-orange highlights. She suggested shaving off my "sideburns" and I agreed but her heavy handiness took off way too much hair on my right so now I have a noticeable bald spot there. Luckily, she did not do the same to the left side - perhaps after realizing she'd been a bit more than gung ho with the razor on the right side but it's also possible that she just didn't notice the asymmetry. After stating she was done, she had left a noticeably long strand off to one side so I had to point it out to her so she could fix it. After she was done, I also had to remind her that I part my hair on the left side so she had to fix her work again. For $230 + tip, I was expecting a bit more than an uneven orange bowl cut from a nice but very inexperienced stylist. While I can't speak about the craftsmanship of the other stylists at Mango Salon, my experience with Stephanie was easily the most interesting (disappointing) haircut I've ever received. Stephanie informed me that stylists at Mango don't work for themselves as individuals but together (I assume they share their profits?). If that is the case, then to Mango Salon, please respect your customers (even if they are from out of town - and, yes, some do have friends in town!), your other qualified and great stylists, and the art of doing hair and don't use your customers as guinea pigs for your stylists-in-training - at least not for $230 + tips! If you do, perhaps consider paying the 'customer' instead. Had my hair experience been a positive one, I was planning to take my mother-in-law to get her hair done - something to lift her spirits after being cooped up in her senior living facility for most of the past 1.5yrs because of COVID. Instead, I fear such an experience could potentially usher her to an early grave; she may have survived COVID but may not survive a hair experience at Mango Salon. I saw an ad from a stylist named Roberta on Facebook. She said she was giving free haircuts so, being unable to afford one, I scheduled for both myself and my mentally disabled aunt. These folks could NOT have been better! From the moment we pulled up and they had a special spot blocked for us due to handicap, it just could not have been a better experience! Even though we were there for a free service, you'd never know it! We were treated with the utmost dignity and respect, as if we were paying. My aunt is quite difficult to please and Roberta did an EXCELLENT job. I'm pretty easy to please but she took the time to wash, cut, blow dry and style my hair. Don't like this location... I've only been there twice and they over charged me both times!! 70$ the first time and second time I asked for a partial highlight and they charged me for a full panel!! Not to mention when the stylist toned my hair with permanent 10N instead of Demi!! My roots lifted to light... I had to tone it myself at home!! I have been a Mango customer for six years. My stylist left, so I was paired with a new stylist. August 5th was my second visit with my "new" stylist for lowlights/highlights, the same as every appointment prior for 6 years. I left the salon, by choice, with wet hair to dry and style at home, which I have done on many occasions. Once I dried my hair the color was horribly dark and had no dimension. It appeared that only lowlights were put in my hair. Mango sends a customer survey via text after every appointment. I decided I'd respond by giving my stylist a one star rating. Much to my surprise, Megan, the manager called me. I explained to her how bad I thought my hair looked and she offered to have someone fix my hair or she would refund my money. I choose the latter. How could I possibly go back after leaving a bad review without feeling terribly uncomfortable. The charge disappeared from my bank account by that evening. Fast forward to August 10th and the $275.00 charge reappears! I immediately called Mango. The employee I spoke with told me that they could not see where I was charged. I filed a claim with my bank and because it was not a "fraudulent" charge I would have to wait 30 days to get my money back. The Mango employee that was supposed to be helping me has not called back to date. I will follow up with my bank this week. So disappointed and sad by the way this incident was/was not handled by Mango. read more

Truly a great experience. Upon arriving as a new customer, I was given a tour of the salon by reception, who were friendly and accommodating. If one thing which definitely stands out to me it's how great the staff's customer service is. The atmosphere of the place is also relaxing and smells wonderful. My stylist was great! He met with me briefly to go over my hair goals and what would work best with my current hair situation. During the hair wash, you get a complimentary hand massage and hot towel. My stylist also let me know each product he was using, but it wasn't a pushy sales pitch, which was nice. My stylist, Kyle, knew exactly what he was doing and made it look easy, all while keeping up friendly conversation. Also he wasn't all "hey your hair is in terrible condition what did you DO," he just fixed it! At the end of the cut I was in love with my hair again, something i haven't experienced in a long time. First of all, my review has nothing to do with the stylist herself. My issue is with the management/front staff. Unless you are a regular client, BEWARE of their pricing structure. All I needed was a hair cut. I went online and saw the advertisement for their new service, 'Simple Beauty.' It said it was a service based on time, making it easy to get exactly what you wanted and listed several options, including a 15 minute hair cut for $15, 30 minute hair cut for $30, etc. I saw that and thought 'perfect,' that's just what I need. I called to make an appointment, told them it was for a quick trim; they gave me a stylist and appointment time. I arrive and I even tell the stylist I don't need a shampoo, because, again, I just simply needed a trim. I walk up to the counter afterwards and they tell me my hair cut is $70. Imagine my reaction... I explained to the front desk that I was under the impression my hair cut was a part of the simple beauty service. They clearly did not have a legitimate answer and awkwardly tried to tell me 'that's more for like highlights or something.' They said your stylist is a level 3 (?) and that her hair cuts START at $70. I tried to tell them that 1. I had no knowledge of their stylist tier system and 2. I had NO idea my appointment was with a stylist whose hair cuts were that expensive. None of this was communicated to me over the phone prior to that day. They offered to give me a discount on my future visits, but that doesn't do me much good, considering I won't be back. Currently, if you go onto their website, they've now changed it so that it no longer says what it used to, I'm assuming so they don't have a similar problem in the future. Well, Mango, that mistake was at MY expense. Nowhere else on their site does it list the breakdown for prices of services or level of stylists. Their Simple Beauty advertisement is/was SO SO deceiving. Considering they didn't even reach back to out me after I left feedback in an email that they sent me themselves after my visit, I won't be dealing with them at all ever again. read more
