My neck was profusely bleeding in multiple spots, and rather than acknowledge it, the barber made sure the mirror didn't make them visible. I asked for a very short haircut. When he was done I asked him to make it a little shorter. He said, "that was number two; do you want number one?" Thinking he meant trimming it a bit more, I said go ahead - AND HE SHAVED MY HEAD BALD, which was definitely NOT what I expected or asked for! (The shaved head look is currently popular, but it's not for me.) I'm really angry at this guy for his "cleverness" and dishonesty in not plainly describing what he meant by "number one." (Also, their pricing is evidently subject to revision: he charged me $37 for the "$35" haircut I sat down for.) When my hair grows back I am definitely NOT returning to this wiseguy's shop. George is the best. If you're in the UES, this is the place to go. I've been coming here for several years now and have never once been unhappy with my haircut. He's also fast, so you're not there forever, but still does an awesome fade and cut. One time he wasn't available and I had my hair cut by one of his other barbers. They also did a good job, but I cannot remember their name and also went back to George cause that's my guy. Recently they moved into a new spot a block away and upgraded the space. Not that I personally care about this stuff (I just need a good cut), but they now have a bigger space with special kid seats and everything. The WORST haircut I've ever had!!! I went there a week ago because he was rated good. So he receives me with an attitude and sends me to a chair. After explaining how I wanted my cut and telling him that I wanted the left side shorter and the right side long (i have a pixie cut that I've been trying to grow out and it had taken me at least two months to grow the right side) the first thing he does is SHAVE my right side!!!! OMG!! I told him I wanted a "cool" look and he shaves everything and makes me look like a little boy! Then another lady comes and he is like "I'm almost there with you" and he tells me that he's done.... My bf has been coming to George every 2 weeks for the past 5 years, . They're like the best of friends and always seem to have something to talk about when they see each other. It's a comfortable place as I always have a seat when I wait, which is never a long time. He always tells his friends to come here, and even works our schedule around traveling here for a haircut. Not the worst haircut I ever had but here is my experience. I walk into the shop. It's empty except one guy who's dealing with some sort of purchase with the owner. There are three barbers. One male is sitting in one of the barber chairs. The female is sewing and watching a drama on her portable video player. No one acknowledges me. I stand there awkwardly for about 10 seconds before the owner - who is still dealing with a customer - asks me if I am a new customer. I say yes. The owner asks one of the barbers to help me. A third barber comes out of nowhere and welcomes me to his chair. His English seems limited while I show him a picture of what I want. I get the haircut. Not what I wanted but it's not bad. He asked me if it was okay. I said it was good just because I wanted to get out of there. Cost $15 and tipped the guy a farewell $5. Say thank you to the owner. No acknowledgement. Won't be coming back. This place was probably good a while ago but not now. read more

Cutting Asian hair is supposed to be easy. But it's not. George boasts that he can cut my hair in less than 15 minutes. Bingo. I used to live around the corner so getting a cut was easy. One time it was raining and I borrowed an umbrella, which I forgot to return until a week later. I was afraid that he was going to walk the streets searching for me but I was wrong.
