This is a FANTASTIC place. Both in service and quality. Usually I go to Boston to get my hair cut, but I decided to try something more local and went to a highly rated salon in Newton (I'll leave the place unnamed). The haircut I got was the worst I'd ever had (unbalanced and with a strange shape), so bad that when I left that place at 5:30pm on a Saturday, I turned to Yelp to find another place that was open past 6pm and that could fix my hair. One of the first places I called was Manhattan Hair Design. The woman who answered told me that unfortunately they were too busy, and though I explained my situation, she said they just didn't have the time that evening. To my surprise, a few minutes later, I got a call from Ozgur, the owner. Apparently, the woman had mentioned my situation to him, and he actually took the time to call me back and say he would squeeze me in. That's a level of caring that's so rare these days. And it gets even better. When I went over, Ozgur gave me one of the best haircuts of my life. I will definitely be going back for my future haircuts. read more

Ozgur (the owner) is the best hair colorist I have ever been to. He is consistent and fairly priced. I have dark brown hair and I color it blonde (have been doing this for over 10 years). I have been around the block, as far as hair colorists and salons go. I have been going to Ozgur for 2+ years now, and people ask me all the time where I get my hair colored; I tell them to go here because I have never had someone color my hair as well as Ozgur. The salon is new so its not busy when I am there (which is a nice change of pace, and I am appreciating that now before people start to find out about this little gem and it gets crowded). I hate it when I see I bad review that really isn't fair so I am motivated to correct the review of Ozgur being all about his ego. I have been here twice and did not find this at all. Its a quirky little neighborhood place. Its just Ozgur and his assistant, the place isn't glamorous but it is comfortable and clean. He plays Turkish music, not my favorite. Most importantly, he is a stylish guy and confident and gives you a good hair cut and color for a very reasonable price ($80 for cut and color AND blow dry AND extra shine cream while washing my hair). His assistant will bring you coffee and feed your meter. If your looking for a comfortable, reasonable, friendly neighborhood spot, this it. I found the salon on groupon like a few others who've reviewed. SO happy I went with both my instinct and the already stellar reviews. I walked in with a mop of hair that had long past its prime in terms of style. Oscar took meticulous care to section by section create a modern yet easy to care for short style. He then showed me how to blow dry with the simplest of tools: my fingers! Practically requiring no product, the technique gives me lift and can be parted either way. His personality is warm and genuine which is welcomed when compared to other fancy pants nearby salons :) The price is entirely reasonable given the quality of cut and style. And from what one woman there attests to, Oscar is also gifted at color. I will definitely return soon for that. My only comment is that the place itself needs some sprucing up. However in talking to Oscar he is in the process of doing so. In fact, he was open to a few of my humble ideas and asked for my help, which was sweet. Honestly a few healthy plants, a color change, art that reflects his eccentricity but blends well and minor spacing alterations is all that's necessary. So don't let the now "basement" feel turn you away. As I said to him, his business should reflect the pride in all his excellent reviews! I cannot wait to see how it all comes together. Ozgur is really great in cutting hair and coloring, shampoo as well as styling. I went for a haircut to him for the first time and although he was really occupied with two clients and phone calls, he still took me after waiting about half an hour and did an efficient job with wash, cut and style for my hair. He was quick yet considerate about my need for style and length. I'm glad I went to him on the recommendation of a friend. Hopefully, next time the wait will be shorter! read more

I found this place through groupon, but didn't even end up using one. I made an appointment the morning of and came in wanting a full color. I had very blonde hair before and I wanted to go to a dark chocolate brown. Oscar told me it would be difficult but told me he would be happy to oblige. He put in the color, followed by a toner/gloss and then used a masque on my hair as it was very damaged. When it came out after about 2 hours of work, he wasn't happy with the results, so he reapplied the toner. I was nervous at this point because the brown looked really brassy because the blonde was showing through under. Luckily, the second application of the toner helped and I was thrilled with my color! He blow dried it and styled it and I left so happy afterwards. He reassured me the whole time that he wouldn't let me leave without a color that I was happy with and he really didn't. I was there for almost 3.5 hours, but he made sure that I was satisfied. He made me promise to come back every month so that we could work on getting my hair healthy again. He really cares about his customers and making their hair the best it can be. The drive is about 40 minutes for me, but I would make it happily every month for SUCH great service. I'm so happy I tried him out. P.S. I had to park on the street during my appointment and had to refill the meter several times (3 to be exact). Each time, Oscar's assistant would go out and fill it up for me! One time, Oscar even went out and put his own quarters in it for me. I was so happy with this salon and would recommend it to anyone! read more

I am so happy to find this gem through Groupon! Oscar did an awesome job coloring and cutting my hair! I have heavy, straight hair but don't usually like to have a lot of layers because I put my hair up alot. I walked out of the salon with a bouncy hairdo and feeling 5 lbs lighter - AND I am still able to put my hair up without having to bobby pin loose hair strands! Both Oscar and his assistant, Nadia, were friendly and made me feel comfortable. They were a pleasure to talk to while I was getting my hair done. Another added bonus is the salon is less than a 5 minute walk from Newton Highlands T station on the D line, so if you don't have a car, getting there is a breeze! I went here as a last resort back in January, completely judging it based on it's appearance- which looked on par with super cuts or some other basic low end hair companies. I wasn't too thrilled when I walked in, most people in the area had negative views on the place judged off of the outside signs and decor since newton is filled with overpriced 'smoozy' salons with bamboo and earth tones. Oscar doesn't bother with those and instead gives you the best haircut of your life. He cut off way more than I planned, but he did so because I had so much split ends and my hair was a mess. When I saw half of my hair on the floor I considered getting up and bolting but stayed put because when my highlights and cut was done I was gobsmacked. Easily the best haircut I've ever had in my life and made me feel like a million dollars and it was very low prices for the quality of work that was given. I tell all my friends to go there and forget what the decor says your cut will be like! He does such an amazing job and his wife and kids are all very sweet. Can't wait to go again. read more

Went today for the first time (used a Groupon) and got a great cut and color. I have short, very curly, thick hair which Ocsar understood and perfectly addressed. He took his time and gave me a well shaped and chic look. Cut off just enough, but not too much. No blow drying will be necessary. I really like my hair now and I do NOT say that often. The color is also great. I have brown hair with lots of grey. It now has shiny elements and is a beautiful rich warm brown. No highlights were necessary. Purchased a groupon to get my hair cut here because of all the 5 star reviews. Worst decision I've ever made with regards to my hair. I rarely give reviews (less than 5 in my life) but this was so terrible I have to. Ozgur was very nice but I feel like there may have been a language barrier. It took a number of explanations before it was understood that I had one picture of the hair style I wanted and another of the color, instead of somehow wanting them combined. Furthermore, regarding the picture of the style I wanted, I showed it to him but he only briefly glanced at it before saying 'ok, no problem.' I had to pull out my picture multiple times and ask questions about it, about how I might style it, etc in order to feel like he had actually looked at it and knew what I wanted. In the end, the color turned out fine, wasn't exactly what I wanted, but it was fine. However, the cut was the worst I have ever had. And I have had some bad hair cuts, but it was absolutely nothing like what I wanted. I drove home crying. The layers were waaayyyyy shorter than I wanted, so were the bangs. I wanted an A line and didn't get it. He was throwing my hair all around, cutting left and right without measuring. And in the end one side was about 1/2 inch different in length. I called a friend who cuts hair to see if she could do anything to help it and drove straight to her place. She was able to help a little but the problem was that the layers were too short. It was a disaster. After a week of buying different hair products, curlers etc and playing around to see if I could do anything to make it at least semi-decent, I had to pay for another haircut - a pixie because he cut it too short - at a very expensive salon. I will never go there again and I would never recommend it to anyone. read more

This place is all about 'Oscar's genius' and nothing to do with what you might want or the questions you might need answered. Oscar may be great at cutting hair and other services but I have never experienced such ego at a salon before (and there are many in the business). I bought a Groupon for this place in a quest to find a new salon/stylist. The first thing the person who washed my hair said was "Oscar is a genius with hair." and she repeated this in different ways throughout the wash and obviously worshipped 'the master stylist'. When I sat on the chair Oscar said so are we giving you a short haircut? (i have long hair) perhaps it was a joke, however i interjected that I was looking for a healthy trim and wanted to inquire about color for a future appointment (never discussed or mentioned the color throughout the session). He came back with you need layers to which I said, I've had layers before and they don't work well on me (I have thin hair) and tend to go flat. He proceeded to dive into the cut and give me layers. When he was blow drying my hair in a rather harsh manner with a brush using the dryer directly on my hair (almost burned my neck), he instructed and repeated several times not to use the dryer or use it 'very little' and not directly on my hair (fair enough). I asked him if that's the case, how do I maintain and style it since he was doing the opposite, hoping he'd explain or show me. He said you know, women in Turkey come to the salon once a week implying since I was unable to blow dry it myself, he could do it for me. to which i replied, I'm not coming once a week. He either ignored my questions, or didn't understand the nuance of english and answered it totally different usually with an interpretation that stroked his ego, and diminished my question. I was told my hair was fantastic by the assistant but never asked "how do you like it?" (it's assumed it's genius work of course - why would my opinion count). Oscar obviously has talent as described by some of the more positive reviews. and if you are someone who likes to go to a salon and allow the stylist to take over and do as he/she pleases, then this is the place for you. Otherwise, RUN. ps about two hours later, the blow dry and hair spray gave out, and my hair was flat with layers just what I didn't want. read more
