I had trimmed my hair at home during the COVID pandemic and because I hadn't gotten a cut in about a year, my hair needed some TLC. Marguerite did an awesome job listening to what I wanted, looking at a photo of a previous cut, and carefully trimming my hair to the desired length. I ended getting about 5 inches cut off and instead of cutting it all off at once, she cut it once and then asked me if it was the right length or if I wanted it shorter. Which is my favorite thing that hair stylists do, rather than cutting it all off and asking if it is too short. Not happy with how my highlights came out. I just wanted basic highlights on my dark blonde hair, been getting them for many years, 2-3x a year. I had booked an appointment for a full foil. I was early and the stylist was late. She told me I didn't need a full foil, so we did a partial foil instead. Unfortunately it didn't come out well. First, the whole foiled section is much lighter than the back/bottom portion of my hair (so really I did need a full foil and should've pushed back on that?). I have never had such a stark contrast between the foiled and unfoiled portions... it looks pretty bad when my hair is up, and as a mom, that is basically all the time. Second, some of the highlights themselves are uneven, being super bright (almost white) closest to my roots in a few spots. Never had this happen before, either. I tried to schedule a correction, but they said I would have to pay to get the bottom foiled as that wouldn't count as a correction. Fair enough per the technical definition... but my hair just doesn't look good overall and that would be the only clear fix from my perspective, since you can't darken bleached hair. Oh well. That was a huge expense. I definitely will not return. Haircut was fine! Well, I never thought I would have to write about an awful experience with La Boutique Salon, but here it goes. I have been with Julie for well over 15 years. I met her when she worked at another salon. When she was leaving for La Boutique Salon she told me about her move. She told me where she was going, and I chose to follow her because I liked how she made my hair look and feel great. Julie has worked on my hair when I had all sorts of medical conditions and in the past changing appointment dates was never a problem. Until now... Since my second bout with Covid in 2022 I have developed several medical conditions which impede my day-to-day functioning. Sometimes I am absolutely fine, enjoying the day with peace and happiness. But, for the other times I require an incredible amount of strength to even raise my head above the pillow. I now have COPD, Stage 3b Kidney disease, T2D, CAD with a 30% blocked left descending coronary artery. My current health functions vary from day to day. Julie knows this. My cancellations have been difficult for me to do. One time, in the past, I did call to change my appointment because I was offered a few days down the Cape and was given short notice. I gave Julie 6 days' notice. I called out on Feb 29, 2024 because the night before I collapsed at the dinner table due to low blood sugar and felt miserable and weak the next morning. I had to call out for being sick that day because I feared I would have collapsed while my hair was being done and the Salon neither has certified CPR Stylists who would know enough how to initiate CPR or a visible AED. I received a "Cancellation Policy" via email and its wording stunned me as a long-term client who has severe health issues. I told the desk manager that I called out on 2.29.2024 because I was sick. She told me she understood, but the policy is the policy and I had to adhere to the conditions and repercussions as stated. If you read the Cancellation Policy, it clearly targets the long-term client with health issues. Who has not become sick or has had bad things happen to them to necessitate cancelling, especially when the client has been with the stylist for over 15 years? Unrealistic. Julie has arrived late to the Salon, overbooked clients where I had to sit and wait, and double book clients where she works on two clients simultaneously. A Stylist had her dog run freely in the Salon and I put up with it. A long-term client "accepts what is" because there is an understanding and appreciation for human life and how things in a day can change what happens. I am also a firm believer in "What goes around, comes around". So, Dominique, or whoever the "manager" is, do not send a curt brisk note back defending your position. Your stance on this Cancellation Policy is against my ADA rights to be treated with respect and dignity for being a sickly long-term client. Most of your positive evaluations are from clients who are relatively new or have been a client for less than 5 years. Upon returning home, I then called a friend up, who is an RN and Stylist, and told her what happened and asked her what I should do. No, just no. I read the reviews and did my research before really committing to a new salon in the Boston area. I had saved up for over a year to be able to do a balayage (because we all know how expensive it can be) and was excited to try this salon. I came in with virgin hair and was told right off the bat "oh this will require at least 2-3 visits. Excuse me??? I have gotten full highlights my entire life and it was always achieved on ONE visit. LIES. That should have been a red flag but I said "ok, let's see what we can achieve today." Long story short - I walked out with "highlights" that were clearly not toned but HIGHLIGHTS!!! I asked for balayage. Oh and yes, a $360 bill. A haircut (just a trim, really) that had uneven layers - like actually looked AWFUL. Recently I went to another salon because I have been so self-concious and they had actually thought that I hadn't even gotten my hair done in months, let alone that I paid $360 for a botched balayage. Understandably, I couldn't have my makeup trial because of COVID, but I was so relieved to learn a few weeks before my wedding that I could get both my hair and makeup! I cannot say enough food things about this place. The decor is so tastefully done, the atmosphere is super comfortable and the staff is soooo friendly. More importantly, they are very talented. I got probably the best haircut I've ever gotten from Marguerite. She did exactly what I asked for, and I was able to style it well myself also. For every day or your special day, you can't go wrong with La Beautique! Almost a year ago, I asked for salon recommendations via Instagram and multiple friends specifically mentioned Dominique at La Beautique. I've been seeing her ever since, managing my cuts & color, which was especially important for the months leading up to my wedding. I love going there to unwind, chat, and be in such a well-curated space. When I began going to La Beautique, I already had a stylist lined up for my wedding day. A few short months before the big day, I found out that the stylist (who was a few months pregnant) was unfortunately put on strict bed rest for the next several months--and would not be able to help me on the day of. She offered to reach out to contacts, but first I went out on a limb to see if Dominique was available. I wanted to make sure that I had someone I trusted, ESPECIALLY on such short notice. Despite the fact that there were only a handful of weeks to go, and that my wedding date was only 7 DAYS before Dominique's own wedding, she came through for me! She squeezed me in for a hair and makeup trial, accommodated my (very indecisive) bridesmaids adding and subtracting services left and right, and basically didn't even bat an eye despite the incredibly expedited timeline. I know she was dealing with a ton--booked solid at the salon and with brides each week, standing up in her friend's wedding, traveling out of the country, planning her own wedding, and probably more! But she never made me feel badly or rushed. She was very flexible, and on top of that did a great job. Dominique & Rita were prompt to arrive in the morning, prepared for whatever, and were a fun addition to have in the room with my bridal party. I got so many compliments on my hair & makeup on my wedding day, and felt truly gorg. Dominique is extremely talented, patient, accommodating, and super sweet!!! I really loved that she was my wedding day stylist for BOTH my hair AND makeup!!! Dominique also did hair AND make- up for my mother and my sister for my small wedding ceremony. I was a very indecisive bride! I had two hair trials and still ended up going with a different style for the day of my wedding! She was SO patient with me and I really appreciate that! Despite my weekly use of Yelp, this is my first review. I feel compelled to write this review because I almost feel like I owe it to the lovely haircut that I received from Dominique 5 weeks ago. Having recently moved to Newton, I was looking for a new hair salon to take care of my Asian bob. I decided to try La Beautique given its stellar reviews, the reasonable price (with the $20 discount for first-time customers, a haircut comes down to only $30), and the fact that the hairstylist is also a makeup artist--as a makeup lover myself, I tend to trust the aesthetic taste of makeup artists. My experience with La Beautique proved my instinct and the reviews right. Dominique truly listened to what I needed and gave me the best chin-length bob so far since I decided to wear my hair short a year ago. Within a few simple steps (I was honestly surprised by how quick they were), my hard, straight Asian hair became soft and tame. I walked out the salon feeling like Velma Kelly from Chicago. Yet what truly made Dominique stood out is how long-lasting the haircut is. In the past, I have tried a Korean salon in NYC, a Chinese hairstylist in Beijing, and two hairstylists from a Wellesley salon; all of them were more expensive. Each time I would look good for one or two weeks before one side of my hair started to stick out. The perfect round shape obviously came from the blow-dry, and I do not have the time or technique to recreate that shape everyday. However, this time the haircut was shockingly easy to maintain. It has been more than a month and I'm still quite satisfied with how my hair looks with minimal daily effort. I am truly in awe. I highly recommend La Beautique and its beautiful, talented owner. But La B was the closest thing and I had a meeting in an hour so I decided to take a chance. I called first to make sure they had room for me and they couldn't have been sweeter on the phone. Last week I literally cried in the chair. I've been trying to grow my hair out for my wedding this June but needed a trim. I usually go every 8-12 weeks and the stylist always checks how much length is ok and usually trims about a 1/4 inch. Marguerite seemed too preoccupied training a new stylist to ask me how much length I'd like to have taken off. Without asking me, she cut over an inch of my hair growth. As soon as I saw how much she cut on the floor, I started sobbing. My hair doesn't grow quickly, and in less than a minute practically all my growth over the past year was gone with no apology whatsoever. Instead, I was made to feel ashamed for being so upset. My wedding is now less than 5 months away and my hair will never be as long as it was before she cut it. I was offered no discount, no sympathy or apology. Furthermore, my bangs are now choppy and uneven somehow, and for an $80 cut, it baffles me that a trainee was responsible for washing and styling my hair. Dominique is one of a kind! October 24th, 2015 I hired Dom to do my hair and makeup for my wedding. She also did 4 or 5 of my bridesmaids hair and makeup. I had been going to the same hairdresser for 23 years. I was growing unhappy with, what I felt, was damage to my hair, caused by the technique they used. I decided to cheat with Dominique - just once, to see how she was with color and cut. She brought my hair back to a healthy shine and gave me a great cut. She uses top of the line products, and I love that she sometimes puts a glaze in. I don't know exactly what a glaze is, but it makes my hair feel so healthy and shiny. Not only have I been coming here to get my hair cut for the past two years and am always extremely happy with the outcome, but they made planning a wedding during COVID so much less stressful! After amazing haircuts, I hired La Beautique to do my hair and make up for my wedding in Sept. 2020. In May of 2020, we decided to postpone our wedding to Sept. 2021. At that time, La Beautique was amazing and was able to make our new date work. In Feb. 2021, we decided to cancel and just have a small ceremony. We were not expecting our retainer fee back from any venue and did not ask for it; I simply informed La Beautique that we would not be getting married and I appreciated all of their support and contact throughout the last year. Dominique immediately responded at how sorry she was we had to cancel our wedding and was so sympathetic to our situation. However, the most incredible thing was that she reimbursed the retainer fee. This may sound like a small action, but of all of our vendors, she was one of only two that offered to return the retainer fee we had paid. For a small business to have willingly offered to return this money after going through COVID is just an amazing gesture and truly speaks volumes of Dominique and the La Beautique Salon. I ended up having two hair trials because I was so indecisive and Dominque literally knew exactly what I wanted and executed it perfectly! Dominique and her team showed up right on time on the Wedding morning at the hotel and they immediately made everyone comfortable and it felt like hanging out with friends! Dominique is great at communicating and replies quickly to emails- she is super organized and a great business owner which I really appreciated in a vendor!
