I've used Manhattan Mini Storage for years and never had any serious issues. However, with the changeover in management, the quality has plummeted. We had to deal with a mouse infestation across the basement level at the 524 West 23rd Street location during mid-December 2022. There was an overpowering decay-like odor coming from a nearby unit for at least a couple of weeks, yet management didn't take any decisive action, which led to the infestation affecting more than a dozen units. They moved us out of our unit and into an upper level, while we literally dodged mice running back and forth between units. Their apparent lack of concern and zero urgency to deal with a public health hazard is totally unacceptable. They just gave us masks and gloves to deal with the cleaning ourselves. Even worse, over $1K of our property was destroyed by the mouse infestation due to management's lack of activity for weeks. Once we discovered the infestation, we immediately asked to submit an insurance claim and were told by the employee on site that they were out of forms and we should email later. We have emailed the loss details multiple times to management and while they eventually confirmed receipt, they have otherwise ignored our insurance claim (3 weeks and counting). We want it mentioned that only after we wrote a yelp review on October 2nd about the terrible customer service from management at Manhattan Mini Storage on 23rd street, did we just receive a call on October 3rd from the manager at Manhattan Mini Storage on 23rd street. We told the manager on October 3rd during the call that we need to speak to their manager or a corporate executive because the manager does not resolve our account needs, because the manager does not return our calls or emails, and because our account needs have been outstanding since before the beginning of 2023. It is documented in writing that the manager's staff member emailed the manager in June 2023 and we still did not hear back from the manager until October 3rd after we wrote a yelp review on October 2nd. Elevators are huge so it's very easy to get stuff up to the units. The best part is the staff--they are extremely friendly and accommodating. If I could give the new ownership of this location a MINUS 10 that would be my rating. Manhattan Mini Storage was bought by another company and boy what a disaster. Let's start with the courtesy storage taxi that made all the difference between them and other storage places in and around Manhattan. The only way I discovered it was cancelled was because I called to make a reservation and was told the service was terminated. There was NO formal letter or email notifying us of this YET I have received 3 paper- mailed notifications for each unit that my monthly unit cost was raised in the span of 4-5 months. (So really at least save paper and send me one letter with all my units.) And all of this is during Covid still when people have more strife, less work and everything is blah. I was also charged without PRIOR notification for unit insurance even though I carry homeowners insurance that covers my storage unit. The issue here is COMMUNICATION or the lack of. I was told that I could get back the $10 monthly insurance fee with proof of my insurance .. okay again why no advance communication. Compared to similar storage places, Manhattan Storage is DOUBLE in price for the same size unit. I can only imagine that the Chelsea high end gallery hood makes the new management think everyone is wealthy so why not up the charge. No justification and by thw way new owners- had you decided to charge a REASONABLE fee for the storage taxi , people would have paid it for the convenience. just shows the no think policy at the head of this takeover. But I m grateful for the wake up call- I realise I don't need to store my stuff - I ll just get rid of it! I m leaving at the end of the month but wanted to share the poor customer polices for all those seeking storage. read more

I've used various storage services in the past, but Manhattan Mini Storage is by far one of the better. Over the phone the representative(Alan), was very friendly, and helped me decide on the best size for my storage needs. He was knowledgeable and patient, explaining everything that I would need to know, even helped me save a few dollars a month while increasing the overall size of the unit I'd be renting! When I actually arrived, I had bought a lock which was too large for the locks on their storage units. The representative in the location threw in one of theirs at no additional charge, as mine did not fit. The courtesy, respect and assistance I was given was above and beyond my expectations, if you're going to be in need of storage, for any reason, give them serious consideration, they've been a blessing for me during a very rough time. read more

Be very careful when using this company! My daughter recently had a unit here. When she moved her things out and completely vacated the unit (11/19), she called me to make the final payment. She notified them at that time that she was emptying the unit out, and the movers were standing there with her. They told her to leave the door open once they were done, which she did. Last month and this month, I noticed two charges on my account for $254.92. They're claiming she was still using the unit, because there was a lock on it. However, she didn't place the lock on the unit. She left the door open, so someone there had to have placed the lock on the unit. After calling and explaining the problem, they requested my daughter email them giving them permission to remove the lock, which she did. However, they're refusing to issue a refund even though they know it was vacated on 11/19 and has been empty ever since. I'm sure they have cameras and could check if they needed proof. This behavior is so shady! I'm disputing the charges with my bank. If you store your things here, be sure to ask for paperwork or proof indicating you've emptied your unit out once you move out; and verify they will no longer charge your credit card! I never gave them permission to continue charging my card. I used a link to make a one time payment, and they stored my card in their files and continued billing me. read more

Upon calling in to inquire pricing and unit size to the very day of moving our stuff in, the process was a piece of cake! I am thankful to find this gem and my island sistah, Thesha Brown is the best. She broke down the contract and answered all of our questions and made us feel comfortable and safe leaving our belongings in the unit and working with her. I originally went to the U-haul right down the street from this location to book my storage unit. They were having problems with the elevator/access key cards so I did not book anything. I went down the street to Manhattan Minj Storage and was treated so kindly! I was simply amazed by their service as I was used to the rude staff at U-haul. I will say, I have had about enough of this storage facility. I have had a unit for about twenty years, don't ask. Today after my rent has been upped to almost 200 bucks, I decided it was time to start the process of moving out. Not only was the checkin attendant rather unpleasant, she had an actual dismissive tone. Really? I pay good money. When I started going through my stuff, I found that my CLOSED antique trunk that held many blankets and fabrics was full of live carpet beetles. And this trunk has been in storage for 20 years, which means the beetles got in AFTER I moved the trunk there. It was pretty disgusting. All the woolen fabrics were eaten through. But the whole trunk was terribly overrun with bugs, living and dead. I just chose the discard the whole thing. Antique trunk and all. The crazy thing is the storage facility made me pay 35 dollars to have it thrown away. Otherwise, they are an okay place. I mean it looks clean and is well lit. But do be careful of storing woolens and carpets here. read more

I have never written a review about a company, but my experience with Manhattan Mini Storage on W 23rd st has been so bad, bordering on criminal that I hope to warn any prospective customers. I've rented a storage unit from this location for almost three years spending $153.00 a month for a space. I had set-up automatic charges to my credit card. I had constantly requested that they send me an email or notice recognizing the charges, but it never happened. They promised they would and then never followed through. Eventually I stopped asking. After reviewing my credit card statement I would sign into my online storage account and print the receipt. It was irritating but not a big deal. Three months ago without prompting they stopped charging my credit card. An extrememly busy work load that included heavy travel, I hadn't thought to check for the charges on my statement. When I noticed recently that the charges weren't present I called them up. They told me that I had turned off the automatic charges online (I hadn't) and that they'd cut the lock and within the week my things would be up for auction. I had never recieved a single email, phone call, or letter. They told me they had tried although there was no record of them doing so, nor did they care. Then I go to pay online and my credit card was charged twice. I spoke to them again and they refused to refund my credit card for the second charges because they said there was no way to do it. Now I have to reach out to my credit card company to have them reverse. This is by far the worst customer experience I have ever known. The guys who have work here make using storage (never convenient) as pleasant as it can possibly be. General Manager Preston McCoy and his colleague Gabriel Williams are genuinely friendly and accommodating without being pushovers, which is important when dealing with multitudes of frustrated New Yorkers who would definitely take advantage given an inch. The result is a clean, organized, efficiently run facility with all the carts returned to the ground floor in a timely manner and access to your unit as convenient as can be when dealing with a super slow giant freight elevator. I moved out of my space after 2 years using it for my business which required me being there almost 3x a week to get stuff. Preston and Gabriel were so nice and funny, that I actually felt sad to leave the storage space because I wouldn't see them regularly anymore. Now, that's some customer service. read more

Their accounting system is bad, with late fee charges of $20. So when one check is missing (I have my bank automatically send 2 checks for my 2 units, and they are UNABLE to combine these into 1 account), they charge $120 (= 6 times $20) for the half year of being "late." I have been through this with them several times in the course of over 5 years (maybe more than 10 or 20 years), and they used to not call at all, but send an "AUCTION notice" of selling my stuff. Jonathan (nicely enough) called me today on this, but could only waive one late fee of $20, instead of 6 of them. Had he called a half year ago, that would be ok. Had Manhattan Mini combined my accounts, it could have been easier, also. Years ago, they used to be nasty; now they're pleasant, but still inflexible. UPDATED Dec 23, 2016 (Downgraded from 2 stars to 1 star) TL;DR: they mess up, blame the customer, are nasty, and don't fix the system. They again MESSED UP and said I owed $240 (which is either: they missed 2 checks of mine of $120, or charged me 6 late fees of $20). P___ (general mgr) says he will call me if there's a rate increase, instead of just sending a letter -- which clearly hasn't worked in the past. The simpler approach would be to keep the prices the same, but clearly also he can't control that. The checks were for $121 and it was $125, so they charged a $20 late fee for a half year instead of calling me. I said I paid 10 days in advance (Dec 21 2016 for Jan 2017 rent). I asked him if he understood, and he said "I am listening to you." I clarified that I knew he was listening, but did he understand, and he said "Don't call me ignorant." I said that was his word, not mine, and he said he understood. But it turned out, he did not understand, since he thought my Dec21 check was for December. On combining my 3 rooms into 1 account, P___ says they are linked and I can send (now) 1 check instead of 3 checks, with the 3 unit numbers. I asked for the combined amount, and he said "You can look it up online." That's the level of BAD SERVICE one gets, that they don't bother to try to solve the problem on the spot, and rather than look it up himself, he wants me to do it. He then said it would be $277 for all 3 units, and I computed $254. He said he was counting the 3rd unit which was pre-paid a year in advance. I asked him to re-compute and finally he agreed that it was $254. That's not right to do when you are settling a billing problem! read more

This place gets great reviews for the customer service skills of most of the staff there - they have been always friendly and super nice when I come in. We have been in the process of moving apartments, and we have had to wait on the apartment we are moving into for now close 5 months until it is ready. To tell you putting our belongings in storage because you feel like a man without a country is not a fun task, but seeing polite customer service people makes it a little bit better since I feel like right now we are living out of the storage facility, and just sleeping and eating at my in laws home. Downside and yes there has been one three of the five months that we have been paying storage rent I have been overcharged and I bring it to their attention - the people who are handling the accounting and record keeping not always as nice as the people at the front desk. I feel like I am being a burden to them because I am asking them to correct their mistake. They say it will not happen again, next month it happened again then two months it was fine, I thought oh good everything corrected. This month 3rd time happened again. I know we just probably hopefully have one more month here and then we can move into our home, but the frustration of constantly having to call and get the problem corrected is real let me tell you. If I could just rate the front end staff it would be excellent but factoring in my billing problems, I have to say my review of Manhattan Mini Storage is mediocre at best. read more

I just want to broadcast to the world that, even though we are all getting upsetting reports about the bad economy -- there is still a great force of helpful, caring, and sincere customer service brought to life by Mr. Gabriel Williams at the Manhattan Mini Storage on West 23rd Street, who spent a good deal of time and effort helping me solve a problem caused by -- what else? -- the computer. The problem was that someone had stolen my credit card number (over the internet), and I consequently had to get a new credit card number. (What a pain!) I couldn't figure out how to close my old account on the Manhattan Mini Storage website, to replace it with my new credit card number (for the "Easy Pay" system of paying my monthly storage bill), and ! was very frustrated and impatient. I called Mr. Williams and, in his deep calm voice, he spent a lot of time "walking me through" the complicated process of opening a new account -- thus helping me pay my monthly rent in time, without being charged a "bad credit card" fee. I have since written the following in an e-mail to Gabriel's boss, singing his praises: "Gabriel Williams has always been a big help to me in the 15+ years I have been a customer at Manhattan Mini Storage. I appreciate the way he is so kind, patient, resourceful, and attentive to a customer's needs -- a real problem-solver." Thank you, Gabriel! Beware of the cancellation scam. These guys will not tell you that they will continue to charge you for your "3-month rental" in perpetuity unless you come in person to "sign the cancellation form". Yes, they admit it in the fine print, but it's dishonest, deceptive, and a major inconvenience to people trying to plan to say otherwise. Update: Lost another star. Why? Because despite buying boxes to match the unit's dimensions, they don't fit. So the manager's claims below are clearly false. Also in a PM they offer to adjust the rate for removing the review.
