Beat this bag up, slam it on the concrete floor- man....it's not gonna fail you- because hubs has been holding on to his Manhattan Portage Messenger Bag since 1989. He's used it to go to the Paradise Garage and is still using it every time he goes to The Loft, the beach or the park. And fabrication says a whole damn lot because the thing is so old- for the 30 years he's had it, all it has is one small open seam (which is held together with staples). But it's still solid! Portage is located on Elizabeth St (between Houston & Prince). Hubs has always loved the idea that his favorite Messenger bag is NYC-owned. But I personally love- as a non-Portage bag owner- how Manhattan Portage is Woman-owned and behind this great NYC brand right in Nolita! And if you're into bags- Portage has them. Hubs loves the simplicity of his old black Messenger bag and a Neon Yellow-Green stripe going across with a very straightforward and minimal design. He actually wanted to replace it with an identical- but things change, styles evolve...you know how it is. At least one review mentions the "Asian man"- and Hirumo was nothing but informative and pleasant giving us information after information. I am Korean, but I knew about Manhattan Portage while living at home because a Japanese friend told me about the company and their amazing bags.  Lin Su-hwei started the company although I do not know if there was a sale of the company since its founding.  In any event, these bags are indestructible.  I use mine for books, toss it on the ground, on the floor of my classrooms, it goes through the rain and snow and it is nearly indestructible. I wish the strap on mine was a little thicker, but overall I am extremely happy with my messenger bag.  It is my understanding that if anything ever happens to my bag, they will repair it for a nominal fee.  I can't imagine anything every breaking. Went in today to pick up a bag as a gift for my BIL who loves this brand. Rory and Jessica helped me out and really made it easy to find what I wanted. I was shown a variety of styles, each one great and along the lines of what I wanted to buy. They were very patient - not pushy - and accommodating. Within 20 minutes I was able to walk out with a bag in hand that I'm sure my BIL will like. Also was able to use the YELP 15% OFF, so that was a plus. I would look so cool carrying a Manhattan Portage bag...If it was still the 90's. They suck so much a law should be passed that only allows them to produce fanny packs. Their bags are crap. Their designs are dated. The owner is a douche bag. The founder was on Yelp as 'John P'. His full name is John Peters. He just wrote reviews about how bad Crumpler Bags are, and how they are copies of his stuff. Yelp banned him. I guess if I owned a company that made whack, out of date bags that fall apart, I'd be a little jealous too. Crumpler makes great quality bags. I have two of their camera bags and they are far superior to Manhattan Portage. I don't think Manhattan Portage even makes camera bags. I really wanted to love Manhattan Portage bags. They don't look/feel as "commercialized" as Crumpler and Timbuk2. Their headquarters are in New York. How could you go wrong? But unfortunately, their bags are no longer made in New York City or even the US. If you check the FAQ on their website, they admit they've been producing them in Asia. That's not something that I personally have a problem with as long as they're paying them decently and the bags are still of high quality. But it's looking like that's not the case, at least in terms of quality. I purchased a Laptop Messenger in late July. By mid September, some of the stitching around the front pocket was coming apart. I took it back to the Token Store (which is the primary storefront for Manhattan Portage bags in NYC now) and they replaced it without a hassle. Unfortunately, the replacement bag was not up to standard either--this one was put together unsymmetrically! (The attachment of the front flap of the bag is about an inch off.) I'm planning on taking this one back too; I'm sure they will replace it for me again, but how many times should I have to go through this to get the bag I should have got initially. Either I've been very unlucky or they really need to improve their quality control. (BTW, I don't think Manhattan Portage has a store at the address on this Yelp listing anymore. You'll find the location of the Token Store if you go to the Manhattan Portage website.) UPDATE: I learned that all of the black laptop messenger bags had this defect. I was a little disappointed that all they gave me for discovering this manufacturing defect was a stupid MP lanyard (I was secretly hoping they'd give me a free bag). Plus, since all of the black bags were messed up, I had to get a different color. Yeah, I know--with people dying in Africa and stuff, me having to get a different colored bag is not the worst thing that can happen. BUT, if you're obsessed about bags like me, it still sucks not having the exact bag you want. The resolution of the situation left me not so excited about Manhattan Portage anymore, so I'm not sure if I'm going to buy any more of their bags. read more

I've needed a replacement for my messenger back for awhile. I'm very rough on my bags. I was in the neighborhood so i came in to look. I ended up leaving with a nice replacement that is sturdy and a good value. I think the material is similar to a bulletproof vest. Buyer Beware! The bags are great, but be careful shopping at this retail location. They will not offer any refunds whatsoever even if the tags are uncut. All sales here are final. Tip: come see the bags here in person, but order on their website. They offer refunds on the merchandise only online, not in this store. I'll tell you this much: if, like me, functionality matters, than Manhattan Portage is a pretty good option. Don't think of your MP bag as an alternative to your oversized Dolce and Gabanna handbag. They are two different animals. Think of your MP as your ticket for easily schlepping things around town. Think of your MP as a big (or small) rectangle that you can put things in. Think of your MP as something that will last a very, very long time. On days when all I need to do is carry three huge stacks of students' papers to school alongside my laptop, I throw it all in an MP bag, and I'm off. The bag isn't flashy, it's not oversized, it doesn't have anything shiny or ornate. It's just a simple, easy, durable bag that does the job - and I love that about it. And let me say one other thing about MP: when something breaks on your MP (say the zipper gives out after five or ten years), you can take it back to the store and they'll get it fixed for you. And one last thing about the store- I've had only positive experiences there. Smart store, with smart bags. Brought my vintage 2006 Manhattan Portage bag down to Manhattan headquarters for repair of a worn-out zipper. Cool bag, the hip employees noted, particularly the five-year-old olive oil-on-olive stains. $15 and 2 weeks later, the bag was sent out and returned good as new. Store also offers 30% on last year's designs and colors, as well as a show room for their not-as-ubiquitous Token line. Token bags (designed to be higher-end) are sharp, but tend to be heavier than their mainline Manhattan Portage counterparts. While there, learned that the MP Japanese website offers a substantially different collection of bags, many which are compelling buys - though in Yen. Maybe the Manhattan flagship store can acquire one of these? read more

I love this place. I bought my first Manhattan Portage at their old location back in 2005 and have used the heck out of it. I take it whenever I travel or go to a concert and can fit a ton of stuff in it. Went back to the store (new location) this trip and got a Token because it's virtually identical to my old one with a cooler color scheme of black with a brown stripe. The woman working there couldn't have been more friendly and helpful (she even gave me a ton of those guava candies). Don't understand the haters - LOVE it. My husband loves Crumpler and they're nice but a little too bulky and too much velcro for my liking. Overall happy to give this place 5 stars. read more

Memories of high school come flying back to me, where we would travel to this strange placer, which was more of a hole in the wall. The owner or whatever he was would obviously make fun of the current non portage bag you were carrying. He would go as far to pull the strings so your bag would rip or break. Then he would say see how crappy your jansport is. why not shell out $$$ for my bag? sigh. alas I am no longer in high school, and no longer dealing with such a bad attitude in a person anymore. Manhattan Portage carries 2 different brands (sort of). One is Manhattan Portage as you expected, and the other is called Token, which is a subdivision of this company which is more urban and neater I should say (Manhattan Portage is more casual). I have bought the first bag, a small crossbag to carry my equipments during work, and I really love it. It had cool design, but the texture is very strong and firm. Has good combination of color selection, and has a lot of pockets within the bag. The token brand looks quite sophisticated but at the same time can be very casual. After having used my first bag for a month, I ended up buying another bag (bigger one) for my books, laptop, etc. Service is very good, and the people who work there tried very hard to be attentive and answer all the questions during each visit. As some other reviewers pointed out, this brand is not cheap, and Token is even more expensive than Manhattan Portage line. Still, thinking of using these bags for the next five years at least, this is definitely a good investment. BEWARE. This store is not willing to offer any flexibility on their return policy. (I'm not even talking about refunds, just regular exchanges). Even if the item is obviously brand new and unused, perfectly able to be resold, with all the tags attached and with a receipt, they will not even exchange it for a more expensive item (when they would make more money), if the return is done after 30 days. Don't even try on the 31st day, or if you weren't able to bring the item back sooner because you were in hospital or if you purchased the item as a gift for someone else who couldn't receive it until the 31st day. They will say that their policy is very clear, but you will find other retailers with a lot more flexibility. They see no situation as unique ( unlike other retailers) and they will not care! Manhattan Portage gear is Great....but order it online....it's far safer. read more

I really like the designs but... they do NOT honor there 2 year warranty policy. I bought a computer sleeve and it started to tear in the corner in less than a year. They have a 2 year warranty but said I'd be required to leave the computer sleeve with them for a month without the guarantee that it'd be fixed. I'm only giving Manhattan Portage three stars because while the bags are indestructible and stylish and have protected my beloved computers for years, I don't like the company's "no refunds" store policy. I can't stress this enough: MAKE SURE YOU LOVE WHAT YOU BUY because if you decide you don't love it or want to exchange it for something cheaper, they won't refund your money; they'll only give you a store credit. As far as the store itself, I was not 'shadowed' like some other Yelp reviewers, however there is something awkward about the salespeople. You can get a bag customized at the W Broadway store. That's pretty awesome. I just purchased mine, so I can't say what the quality of the bag is, but it looks rugged. The employees there were all very helpful. Note, there are two different Manhattan Portage business out there. If this store is to be believed (and Googling around seems to verify that John Peters is the original designer), that means this store makes the original bags, and the Token Store is the spin-off. I've probably accumulated 7 MP bags since I was 14 years old, when they were haute for a certain subset of nyc teenagers in the mid-late 90s. I don't remember where they all went, but I saw ALL of them on a recent trip to the new flagship store on Elizabeth Street in Nolita. I think their old store was on Greene or Mercer or Canal. Anyway, my nostalgia digresses. I needed a small, lightweight, water-resistant, packable crossbody messenger bag for an upcoming vacation and I knew MP would fit the bill. Upon walking into the store, I was awash in deja vu as I saw literally every MP bag I've ever owned hanging on the racks, brand new relics of my youth. It makes me happy that they still make the same exact bags as they did over twenty years ago - so many of my favorite things end up discontinued, never to be found again. They also have some new, fancier, less casual styles suitable for those who need bags to schlep to their conservative office jobs. It seems that many are against this store's non-changed style bags because they're out-dated as if they were humiliating you as a time traveler from the 90's who never fit in current society. But by having a bag like this you could classify yourself as "timeless." Classic rules. The salesmen are helpful and nice but somewhat lack little knowledge on the products. Given the fact that there are so many bags in the store, it's too harsh to demand them to remember the info of every single bag. They would check the info you need online for you. The location of this shop on Elizabeth Street near the core shopping street Broadway in SOHO seems make it go unnoticed because many foucs on Broadway rather than the surrounding streets.
