Horrendous experience. Worst customer service EVER. If you have an afternoon to waste, to be lied to and to be treated like a bunch of cattle- this is your place. We arrived 15 minutes early for my Husband's 3:15 appointment. An hour later we had yet to be acknowledged except for taking our money and completing paperwork. Meanwhile, the front desk "trainer" and another clerk were gossiping, laughing and chatting- ignoring myself and others at the front desk waiting. After I approached the front desk, we miraculously were called back- 50 minutes AFTER our appointment time. But we only saw an assistant for tests. We were then put in a full waiting room and told there were at least three patients ahead of us so it would be ANOTHER 25 to 30 minutes before we saw a doctor. So two hours plus for a check up. But it gets better- turns out there were 10 patients ahead of us. So I wouldn't believe a word that anyone at this office says. I was considering using this practice for eye surgery myself. There is no way I would give them a dime of my money with such an inefficient office. If I ran my business this way, I wouldn't have a business. Zero star rating. I went in for follow up to cataract surgery and the technician started to treat me for lasik post op. she had NO idea what I was in there for. Even if she was looking at the records, she was doing all of the tests wrong. I had to correct her and he had a hard time comprehending was in there. So then I had to start another round of test then I in there, even though she was equally as confused. This is kind of dangerous they could go in there for one thing and they're treating you for another. And before I had cataract surgery, I never had trouble with my left eye, but since I've had cataract surgery now, I have spiderwebs in my eye and a big film in my eye, and I'm having trouble seeing. Dr. Tran H. Nguyen of Mann Eye Institute performed a Cataract Surgery on my left eye on 05/12/2025 and a Laser/ YAG Procedure was performed on 07/25/2025 by Dr. Nguyen to correct the blurred vision and other issues in my left eye. I was promised that my vision will improve significantly but my vision has gotten worse. My vision was fine before these procedures. Due to these procedures, I am partially blind in my left eye and I am unable to see clearly. I also see floaters and it is blurry. If I had known what I know today, I would not have agreed to these procedures. So far, I have paid $1,517.76 from my pocket and BlueCross BlueShield of Texas has paid thousands of dollars to this provider and the Surgery Center. I will not go back to Mann Eye Institute to see Dr. Tran Nguyen because I am afraid that the vision in my left eye will get even worse. I have consulted with several Eye Care facilities and I am told that it will cost approximately $15,000 to correct the vision in my left eye. I want Mann Eye Institute to reimburse me for all the pain and suffering and for the cost of the future procedure/s to restore 20/20 vision in my left eye. read more

Had LASIK here by Dr. Paul Mann about 9 years ago and I still see 20/20. I was 20/500 before LASIK and immediately saw better when I sat up from having the procedure. It was amazing and still amazes me today. The dryness was bothersome for the first few weeks afterward, but I could still drive and fully function as soon as the very next day. I have continued going here for exams and the staff are always knowledgeable and friendly. Love this place and am happy I didn't go with the super discounted people who cut corners. Extremely disappointed in them again. After an awful experience in 2023 I was referred here again thru my main eye dr for corneal evaluation. I was given the wrong doctor, then had to make an appointment with another ophthalmologist to do another "Look & see" appoint, only to schedule another & final scraping. Each of these "look & see" appointments cost me $100 just to be in the office. Huge rip off. 2023: Sent my medical records twice on two separate occasions to be added to my file and the dingbats at the front desk couldn't manage to get them into my file so I started my appointment with no medical records. I should have taken that as a red flag to cancel my appointment. So disappointed with the lack of response from the south office! Since my last follow-up appointment in November, I have left more than six messages with various staff members requesting a call back from Dr. Z as instructed during our last visit. At that time, he recommended trying specific eye drops and assured me he would follow up personally if I called the office. Despite my repeated efforts, I have not received any communication from Dr. Z or any other staff member acknowledging my messages or providing an update. This level of unresponsiveness is both disappointing and unprofessional, and it has left me feeling completely disregarded as a patient. I saw Dr Patel at Sun City and was excited when I had cadaracks that qualified for LENS replacement. I had three glasses for different distances and was sick of losing them and not being able to see people because they were a blur. They got my insurance approval and that was the most difficult part. Getting a clear cost between insurance and lenses options but I wanted to see so I opted for the lens that corrects it all... and it did! TOTALLY WORTH IT!!! They scheduled me with Dr Tremblay at the North West Sugery center (5 stars for them as well). I did one eye a week. I was a bit nervous as you stay awake for the procedure but they did a perfect job and oddly it was relaxing once in progress. The check in as prep takes longer than the procedure. I checked in at 8:30 and was home by 10am the first eye. Dr Tremblay stopped in both times pre procedure and checked on everything and answered all the questions. He has a great demeanor and did an excellent job... I see better than 20/20 in both eyes and it's a new life forever! Recovery was a good long nap and a bit of foggy eye on the day of but good to go by second day. I went back to work and coached in the evening. Easy recovery if you're healthy. Had cataract surgery with a special lens. Problems with the surgery ever since. Called today to the emergency number and two hours later, no call back. Now I have to go the E.R. and spend MORE money to see what the problem is. No call-backs on a Sunday when they have a doctor on-call is not appropriate business practices. Changing from three to one star. Now over four hours from the time I called for an emergency call back. I re-called the service and was on hold a long time, then opted for a call back. They called back, put me on hold, then hung up on me. So, I guess if you have a post-op emergency, just go to the E.R., where they won't know what to do, since they are not eye specialists. I highly recommend getting LASIK at Mann. The staff were great and I had a quick recovery. I would not, however, recommend them for your routine eye care. Both times I've been to the north location I've had to wait an hour to be seen despite scheduling my appointments in advance. before my procedure Dr. Mann came in and sternly told the assistant she had no idea what she was talking about in regards to my allergies. she was actually right on my allergies. he then proceeded to tell me I couldn't have an allergy to steroids, even though I told him I've had two anaphylactic events after drs told me that and proceeded to give it to me..one being a challenge to verify. he needs to do research and not belittle his patient who is paying him. had i not spent time off from work going to pre-ops and already paid and taken Valium, i would have walked out. it took a lot for me to stay. i was fuming so it was a good thing they gave my Valium or I would have made a scene and walked. ignorant doctors are the ones that injure and potentially kill their patients. you have to be your own advocate. would not recommend, spend your money where someone treats you like a patient and not like a payment. On a good note the assistants and optometrists and front office were freaking awesome and paid attention to my allergies and needs. It was solely dr. Mann that did not. So I'd recommend getting another Dr to do your lasik, which they have others available. read more

Had cataract surgery last year in December by Dr. Brundett. Within 2 weeks I was calling about visual problems with rt. eye. I was entrusted to Dr. Ngyun by then. I seen her at 3 appointments. She first said to give it more time though the first eye was clear as a bell the day after surgery. (That's now changed, too). Then she told me to come back in a month. Then my problem was dry eye. Then told me to return in 3 months after surgery to make sure they had healed. I bought the drops she recommended and returned as directed. At the final exam she now said I have astigmatism. I have been told it was minor in the past and one doctor told me I didn't have it at all. I was never corrected for it. Then she checked the power in my eyes, told me it was good. Which is fine, but it didn't account for the cloudiness and halos. As I was checking out, they charged $90. WTH? Which, at that point, I knew they weren't going to fix anything. That was the bottom line. I really thought these were stand up people. Now a year later, my vision is foggy, feel sticky like when contacts are dirty and nothing seems to help with acuity. It's both eyes, more the right eye. I have regrets even having this surgery done. Had I known it was going to be like this, I'd have gone on as I was. I followed the instructions to the letter for post surgery care. I left feeling like buying a used car to only find out it doesn't work and you're stuck with it. I'm going to get this matter fixed, but it's not going to be Mann Institute. *IMHO, Don't ever plan anything like this around December. I felt like I was in a cattle auction herding each one of us out as fast as they could. With all the patients waiting on Dr. B. it was likely people using up there benefits on their insurance. I sure was, but I thought starting in November wouldn't put me in the end of year rush. At the same time, their offices were getting a NEW face lift. Very beautiful I must add. But was my bad experience the result of time of year and business expenses combined? Would they have fixed that one eye had not there been a perfect storm of consequences? They built a new surgical center. It wouldn't have cost them that much to fix it with a 5-10 minute laser procedure. I'll get it fixed, but not at Mann. As for the staff testing the eyes pre and post surgery, they were awesome. I know it must be a cool place to work as they seemed content and happy. I went to Mann Eye for a routine eye exam. I wasn't using glasses to drive, to see my laptop, walk around my home, or at the grocery store. At this first visit was told I had beginning cataracts. One year later, at my next exam, I was told they were ready for surgery. I went to the scheduler at Mann Eye to set up the procedure. I was told that if I needed glasses to drive or read, I would still need them after, and I told her "good as I don't wear glasses". I had the surgeries done, and the next day, after my first eye was done, I could no longer see to read or my laptop...it was just gone. I was told that the "basic" lenses no longer adjust from close-up to distance. Why was I not told this?? I had the other eye done but then things got worse; my left eye was blurry and everything was hard to see clearly. I was told that I had astigmatism in both eyes and would now need prescription glasses to read or use the laptop. No one mentioned astigmatism before! If they had told me all of this, I would have not done the lens replacement and waited to save up for the higher cost lenses. The basic lenses allowed my astigmatisms to shine through...causing distortion. I was then told that I had chronic dry eye, which the antibiotic drops may have caused. I was given sample drops. The surgeon said another procedure to file off the ridges on my left eye could be done. He was going to call in a strong eye drop for me to use for three weeks and then the procedure would be done. I contacted Mann Eye after two weeks of waiting to hear about the prescription eye drops, with no response. I canceled and rescheduled the procedure and waited for the drops...nothing. I called my insurance company and no claim for the eyedrops was submitted. I called Mann Eye and was told they were not called in to my insurance but to their own pharmacy but there was no record of them being requested. I asked them to call in the drops to my pharmacy and they did. They were hundreds of dollars less by using my insurance...something they failed to do. This mess has left me with blurry vision, unable to drive safely and unable to provide the weekly care to my Mom because of my blurred vision. There is a lack of communication and follow-up. The front desk and the techs (they do all the work) are great. The lack of communication is with the Dr and the procedure scheduler...and me. If I had been told that I had astigmatisms, that using the basic lenses would make them worse, that I should have used other eye drops while using the antibiotic drops to prevent dry eye. My vision is 10 times worse than before the cataract surgery. I can't drive safely, can't drive at night at all (all of this is what I wanted to improve). I've fallen three times now because my vision is off. I bought prescription glasses, which are worthless now; my freedom of movement/travel is severely compromised, and here I am. I will never go back there...ever! read more

At the last minute they cancel my mom appointment because they found out that she walk with a walker and she needs help to go on the table. They told me that they don't operate on people with disability even though that person have a home health aid to help them into bed. So basically they discrimination with people with walking disability which it doesn't makes sense because everybody needs help on and out of bed after waking up feeling drowsy. And they cancel her appointment one day before the surgery and she have good insurance so it have nothing to do with that. They just made it clear that she can't walk and get off the table by herself and if she fall, they don't want to be sued (even though we told them that she have a personal home health aid that will help her). read more

I had been putting off the recommended cataract surgery, but having nothing better to do during August, I contacted Mann Eye Institute on July 26. Got the initial evaluation on July 28, the pre-op visit Aug. 3, first eye surgery August 11, second on August 18. Amazing! Absolutely everyone I dealt with (and that involved probably 12-15 people) provided thorough information about the process - both the surgery itself, and also the detailed preparation and financial/insurance issues - clearly and professionally. The entire staff knows how to inspire confidence and make a scary procedure more like a walk in the park. And although I'm not a particularly religious person, I was moved by Dr. Barker's offering a short prayer before we went into the OR. (He asked me first if it was OK!) Supreme kudos to the Mann Eye Institute - 5 STARS and more! (BTW, it's been less than a week since the left eye was done, so I'm not yet seeing the way I will later, but even without glasses, things are so sharp, colors so vivid... David Tremblay did cataract and lens replacement surgery for me in January. I was queasy about it, but Dr Tremblay put me at ease. A laser did the incisions and the doctor put the implants in. It was fast. Dr Tremblay is a young skillful surgeon who got my implants centered just right. I, of course, had to use the drops and not get water in my eyes for a month. Mann Eye Institute has done a terrible job with my vision. 4 LASIK procedures (3 on left, 2 on the right) and 1 year and 10 months later, my left eye is now left with a painful 'balance' and 'focus' problem. The left eye has a problem where it feels really dry despite me putting in eye drops/lubrication which is producing a foggy-like view coming out of that eye. They don't have a single explanation as to why I am having complications with the procedure, all they've told me is that I am part of the 3% of people that this happens to. They don't have a solution for the 3% aside from more surgery. After it became quite evident that the enhancement procedures were not effective, the only thing they kept telling me over and over was, "give it time and continue to use the eye drops." They give you the paper work where you sign away your rights on THE DAY OF SURGERY, not prior so you can carefully review what it says. When I called to request my money back due to the horrific experience, I was told the manager would be calling me. I had a voice-mail from Hailey to call back to discuss the problem. When I was able to talk to her over the phone, I explained to her the complications and symptoms I've had and requested my money back. She was very rude, did not care what I had to say, and pretty much shoved the contract in my face and said, "we don't do refunds, it's in the contract and I can show it to you." Not even the slightest sign of empathy. I have made a terrible mistake in getting LASIK at Mann Eye Institute; they are an institution like any other who prioritizes profits over patients and do not stand behind their work. First I'm going to share some things I wish I knew before LASIK gave me a life sentence of screwed up vision. It's absolutely critical that you hear the other side of the LASIK controversy from patients, doctors like Ed Boshnick, and former FDA official Morris Waxler who do not recommend the procedure. Later I'll talk about my issues with Mann Eye. Full disclosure: My surgery was done at a different highly rated practice in Austin in 2019. But I doubt my outcome would have been much better at Mann Eye based on my experience during second opinions there, plus what I know more generally about modern LASIK now. Consider the 30,000 foot view: You have very little to gain from LASIK. Glasses and soft contacts are a minor inconvenience. If you're struggling with them I'd suggest finding a better optometrist and trying the solutions they offer first. New options are on the market now if you were previously unable to tolerate contacts. You can order prescription glasses online from Zenni Optical for $20-ish nowadays btw, no insurance required. The significantly smaller effective optical zone resulting from refractive surgeries versus what soft contacts or glasses can provide can drastically lower the quality of your vision in dim/dark settings, particularly if you have large pupils. The vision chart is such an old-school way to measure vision that you may be able to read the 20/20 line just fine after LASIK but still end up with awful aberrations like halos and starbursts like me. If so, I believe you're much less likely to be happy with your LASIK outcome especially if you have large pupils on top of that like I do. Lots of people like their post-LASIK vision, but keep in mind lots of people think Applebee's serves amazing food. Also consider the fact that there is a large and very active facebook group that only accepts LASIK patients seeking help with complications as members. It's at close to 8,000 members now with more joining all the time. You should consider the rare but very real possibility that LASIK could leave you disabled and unable to work like some of the poor souls in that group. I believe these injured patients I see posting had healthy eyes and only required simple glasses or contacts before LASIK. From what I have read there is no way to predict which patients will end up with some of the most devastating complications like corneal neuralgia. Seems like reason enough for the FDA to pull the plug on this unnecessary surgery. By the time I had a second opinion with Dr Barker I had learned a lot more about what had happened to me. I was curious about how Mann Eye screens for pupil size. Infrared pupillometers have been around for a long time and can accurately measure pupil size in the dark. However, the technician at Mann Eye used a primitive $10 pupil pen light gauge she held up next to my eyes to try to compare my pupils to circles on the side of the pen. She said my pupils measured 6.5mm. I asked Dr Barker why they don't use an infrared pupillometer. He told me they are too expensive. I told him I was able to find used Colvard pupillometers on ebay for a few hundred dollars. He simply repeated his claim that they are too expensive. I asked him what planned optical zone he would have used had he performed my surgery. He said 6.5mm, which is the typical modern LASIK OZ. He did say my pupils were on the larger end of the spectrum, but didn't say anything to indicate he thought this would be a problem. In reviewing my own medical records I was able to find a pupil size scan showing my pupil size to be MUCH larger than 6.5mm. I don't think there's any excuse for not using the best technology to give more accurate informed consent about the level of post-surgery halos based on pupil size, planned OZ of the surgery, original refractive error, etc. But this appears to be an industry-wide problem. So, does LASIK really seem worth it? Remember, you can never go back. read more

Just wanted to let you know what a disappointment your North Austin office has been on my last two visits. On July 19, 2024 I had an appointment for a routine yearly eye exam at 1:30. I arrived at around 1:15 and updated my account where I read all the warnings about not calling or changing appointments within the certain criteria or we would be charged by not adhering to them. At 2:15 I went to the appointment desk and ask why I was still waiting. The first thing I was told was " You were here early that's why it seems so long" and then I replied "well it's 45 minutes after my appointment time" to which she said " you will be called next". Then, I had an appointment yesterday, 9/12/24 with Dr Tremblay for some kind of laser treatment after my cataract surgery. The appt. was for 4:00. I was called back at 4:10 and my eyes were dilated and I was sent to wait. At 4:30, I was called back to the room for the Procedure. At 5:00 I was considering leaving when the assistant comes in and apologizes for being so late because Dr Tremblay was having to give another patient some extra TLC???What about my appointment time and how long I've been waiting?? Let your assistant give the TLC and you keep appointment times for other patients??? Maybe you should refund me for being so late and reimburse me for my time. I've been a patient for many years with your practice and certainly do not appreciate being treated this way. I would have a hard time recommending you all to anyone any more. read more

Terribly slow and inefficient. Never in my life have I spent 2 hrs for a routine eye appointment. They are also under construction and it is very loud. read more

This may be premature, since my cataract surgery with Dr. Tremblay is not until this Thursday. My daughter Alex recommended Mann Eye Institute when I was referred for this surgery. But Megan, the pre-op technician, was professional, quite helpful getting all needed information to me, and, most of all, patient with this blinker!  It took her a while to get all my final measurements because my blinking reflexes are excellent! I appreciate her getting me all set up for my two upcoming surgeries. I'm hopeful for great results and will review that later. Thanks Megan and Mann Eye Institute for making this right of passage easier. Update: My surgery for cataract removal and astigmatism correction went well and, thanks to Dr. Tremblay, was a walk in the park -- so simple that I was able to leave my second eye surgery and go across town to get my second COVID-19 shot. Can't say enough good things about my LASIK experience. I originally was dead set against blended vision but they gave me contacts to try out what it would be like and WOW-I am so glad they did. Everyone I dealt with was kind, patient, and passionate about what they do. It was worth every penny-if you are even kind of thinking about it-go in and get the free consultation.
