Okay, to be honest, a German restaurant in Playa was the last place you were going to find me. I knew it to be very popular with expats, but that's just not my food. But a good friend had her birthday celebration here, so off to Manne's I go...and they seriously impressed me. We were seated in the garden area, which was very nice. Great service for our large group-attentive, timely, separate and correct checks, fun and friendly-pretty amazing really. The margarita was also pretty fantastic! My dinner (sausage and fries) was fine, but again it's not really my thing-everyone there enjoyed what they got, so it is good food. And at the end of the night they brought out shots of the house tequila and we got our party on. I can definitely see why it's so popular. read more

This is a cool little grotto-like spot with a friendly German owner. And the food was good. The pork schitzel was super flavorful and juicy and well seasoned. The batter was crisp, not too oily, and had a pleasant pepperyness to it. The meat was tender. And the fries were crisp and fluffy enough. read more

This place is my most favorite German outside of Germany of all time. Every meal they put out of that small kitchen is amazing!! The staff is second to none. Manne is a super individual and his team is just amazing. Joel, Ricardo, Omar and the rest of the crew work the evening and the crowd on any given day. The beer is always cold and fresh and whatever shots they serve in lieu of tequila is amazing. Super smooth and chilling. A MUST HIT place in Playa every time. Never ever would I imagine getting a German meal that rivals my mom's in Playa Del Carmen, but yet, here I am, about to tell you how wonderful the food was. This place has a divey, local/ex-pat kind of feel. There are soccer scarves adoring the walls and ceiling. It's dark, cozy, and inviting. Let's talk about the food though. Our waiter brought out some bread and a curry sauce just like my German mom just to serve with steak. I ordered the rouladen, a typical German dish of slow cooked, rolled beef that's been thinly sliced. It was tender, in a great gravy and served with red cabbage and German potatoes. How on earth they manage to find red cabbage in Mexico, I have no idea but it tasted legit. We drank some German beers and after dinner our waiter gave us a shot of tequila. This is probably my favorite restaurant in Playa de Carmen - for several reasons. 1) The service. The servers Ricardo and Joel are hands down the classiest servers in Playa. They remember your name and even so much as when the last time you visited. Their welcoming vibe keeps us coming back again and again. 2) The food. I am not German and nor can I speak to what authentic German food tastes like, but coming from Central Texas where German-inspired restaurants are common, I can say the food here is consistently on point. Consistent is the keyword here. We typically get the pork schnitzel with the potatoes and kraut -- with some salsa to add a kick. The food never disappoints and the beer selection is fantastic. And they serve a great post-meal tequila that I believe is made in-house, and is as smooth as any top-shelf quality you'll get anywhere. 3) The atmosphere. This is a laid-back spot with a very friendly, divey feel that I like a lot. You'll often find the owner - Manne - hanging out. Go to Mexico, get German food? Certainly wasn't my first thought but my dad led my family and I here, including my German grandfather. The restaurant is divided into two parts, a small dining room up front and a "biergarten" type area in the back. No matter where you sit, it's all pretty cozy. The proprietors are German themselves and all around the restaurant hangs European memorabilia ranging from soccer jerseys and cliche tourist shirts in German, to flags and photos. For eats, they have German staples including a variety of sausages, schnitzel, goulash, and daily specials like roast pork and prime rib. On this Friday, the special was ham hock which you have to reserve in advance. Definitely for locals in the know! If you're not into German food, they have a variety of Mexican dishes, as well as roasted chicken and pasta. Being a German family, everyone at my table went with German food. I got the bratwurst platter that came with sauerkraut and french fries, but I asked for potato salad instead. All in all, the bratwurst was tasty. The potato salad wasn't the traditional lighter style I've come to expect from German restaurants, but more creamy like here in America. Overall, everyone really enjoyed there dishes, including my grandpa that went with VERY traditional liverwurst including a fried egg on top. It's a little too out there for me to try. We were in Mexico after all, so I wasn't surprised to see tables around us enjoying tequila towers, while I went for a nice German beer on draft. About halfway through our meal, a conga line appeared led by one of the owners to the risque version of "Living Next Door to Alice." It was quite entertaining and solidified my inkling that these people are here for a good time! The complimentary tequila shots we got at the end of our meal definitely drove that home. Was I skeptical? Yes. Am I happy we kicked off our trip to Mexico at Manne's? You betcha! read more

We loved stopping here during our trip. Such a different unique joint. We loved the food they did for us and we enjoyed seeing them cut off the meat fresh. The beers were so insanely cool too to choose from. I highly recommend going off the beaten track to this spot. read more

REMEMBER THE MANNE's Biergarten Now I know PDC is home to some great Aztecan, Mayan, Oaxacan and traditional Yucatan Mexican restaurants. And you can also find some excellent purveyors of Italian and Argentinean dishes every day, right here in this town. But you could have kissed my old, dirty frankfurter when I was surprised to find an actual German beer garden located just minutes away. Tucked in, right next door to the perennially delicious Romero's Italian Restaurant was Manne's Biergarten, and it was straight out of the fatherland. We were joined this evening by our dear Bostonian friends who highly recommended this establishment. At first, the place seems small even from PDC standards, but if you look around enough, you'll discover the semi-secret backyard, open air biergarten around the back corner. Sweet! So, while our dinner partners were seriously discussing how wicked haaard it was to leave PDC to return to Boaaastin, (BTW-I have zero Texas accent!) I reviewed the generous menu. Tons of sausages, schnitzels, potato salads and even a pig knuckle littered the list. Plus, more biers than you'd ever really need. But this, being Sunday, it as the special Prime Rib & baked potato night. Yum. Unfortunately, I had just devoured a tasty bone-in ribeye/ baked potato dinner just two nights before. So, when our fem friend quickly ordered a brat sausage sandwich with potato salad, I decided to follow her lead. Now I must note that my sausage loving partner, Miss Boston, had just recently fully recovered from some new-age sleep apnea surgical procedure. While she claims the procedure has changed her life in the best of ways, I did decline the opportunity to touch her scar. Guess I'm superstitious. My trusting yet sometimes extremely suspicious wife ordered the roasted half chicken & fries. Mr. Boston went with the night's theme and requested the special dinner. I have to admit that while my mind was jealous of his highly carnivorous & probably scrumptious beef selection, my slightly bulging stomach concurred with my sausage order and that will be my final answer, Regis. As the solo, talented and slightly weathered musician stood out front, earnestly playing Beatles and other assorted love songs, we continued to trade our sometimes-witty tales, too funny stories and otherwise engaging conversation with our interesting and inspiring friends. Then the food arrived. Just let me net it down- all good eats. The sausage and bun were great tasting. The potato salad was sublime and really familiarly good. My dedicated yet sometime highly aloof wife claimed her roasted chicken was both savory and perfecto. The Prime Rib dinner quickly disappeared, so I can only assume it was very good. Very attentive and friendly service, fair prices and fun vibe at Manne's. And the somewhat heavy food was as wonderful as was spending some quality time with our smart, funny and gracious friends from Beantown. And, of course their noisy and funky Rhino. read more

We love Manne's Biergarten! The food is excellent, the staff is very friendly and the hosts make you feel like family. Manne & Suzie are warm and welcoming every time we visit. My kids love the garlic chili sausage and chicken cordon blue. We love the prime rib on Sundays and are looking forward to the pork shank on Fridays.
