Manny's Deli today was an absolute gem. The funny part is, I had no intention of going there today. Manny's has always been on my list, but this morning I was actually heading to Lou Mitchell's. I got there, saw the line, and immediately decided I didn't have that kind of patience in me . So I changed plans, headed over to Manny's, and somehow the place I wasn't even planning on visiting ended up being exactly where I was supposed to be. I walked in having absolutely no idea what I was doing, and there was a woman standing there looking just as confused as I was. She looked at me and said, "This is my first time." I laughed and said, "Mine too. Let's do it together." And just like that, we were off. I decided I wanted breakfast, so one of the guys pointed me back toward the first counter and told me, "He'll take care of your breakfast. If you want anything else, come back and see me." Perfect. I ordered scrambled eggs with corned beef hash, hash browns and toast, then worked my way down to the hot bar where I added some macaroni and cheese and a knish. And THAT was the move. Everything was really good, but the mac and cheese and the knish were the stars of the entire meal. Manny's is famous for the gigantic deli sandwiches, but after today, I'm convinced the real adventure is working your way through that hot bar. The sides are where it's at. While I was waiting in line, one of the guys behind the counter noticed my Dave Matthews Band shirt and started talking music with me. He told me he liked Dave and that he was a huge Phil Collins fan. I told him I'm a Phil Collins guy too, and we ended up having this completely random, genuine little conversation about music in the middle of a busy Chicago deli. Before I left, I told him I was glad he shared that with me and hoped he had a great day. We laughed, said goodbye, and went about our lives. And honestly, that little interaction was almost as good as the food. That's what I loved about Manny's. It didn't feel polished or manufactured. It felt like Chicago. Great food. People actually talking to each other. A little confusion when you first walk in. A stranger becoming your temporary partner because neither of you knows what the hell you're doing. A random conversation about Dave Matthews and Phil Collins. And somehow, by the time you leave, you feel like you were part of the place for an hour. I went looking for Lou Mitchell's today. Instead, I accidentally found Manny's. And I'm really glad I did. Manny's, I'll be back. Next time, though, I know exactly what I'm doing. read more

I was in Chicago for a wedding and had a few moments to myself. I arranged my other stops so that I would be at Manny's for lunch. I heard it was the Katz's Deli of Chicago. With a recommendation like that, I was ready to try anything. Parking can be a challenge in Chicago, but they had a lot in the rear of the restaurant, which was nearly empty. I strolled around to the front and walked in. I wasn't ready for it to be a cafeteria-style eatery, but it really didn't matter. The ambience was kind of cute. Lots of black and white tiles for a retro feel and some historical pictures of the founder. I ordered the 1/2 sandwich and cup of soup lunch special. Matzah ball was my choice of soup and my half sandwich looked huge. I was ready. I tasted the soup first. The broth was clear, and the matzah ball was large. I like hard matzah balls and soft, so it didn't matter to me which it was. What surprised me was the lack of chicken soup flavor. The matzah ball was spongy and not particularly tasty. On to the sandwich. The first thing I noticed was that the carver didn't pull a chunk out of a steam cabinet. They had a slicing machine running constantly forming a mound from which the carver grabbed a handful of corned beef, then a handful of pastrami, which had already been sliced and griddled to add to the corned beef. I asked about the smallest size side of chopped liver they could offer and he gave me a tiny chilled dose sized cup of liver pulled out of the fridge. So far I wasn't impressed. The chopped liver tasted very good but it was hand chopped and in large pieces with very little schmaltz. The sandwhich wasn't anything special. Not hot, not piled and the pickle was a kosher dill, not a half sour. I left half of my half sandwich, the pickle (except for the one bite), and even some chopped liver. For the cost of this average lunch , I would have rather eaten at my favorite deli in Atlanta and had tongue which wasn't even on the menu at Manny's. read more

Mannys Cafeteria and Delicatessen is a Chicago institution and a place where they still make it like they used to. Whole hardy food like your grandma used to make. Their Corned Beef or Pastrami sandwiches are legendary and just as delicious as we remembered. Today we got the Pastrami which is loaded with meat on our favorite, pumpernickel bread. Get the potatoe latki, and don't forget the applesauce. If that's not your thing , they have several other options. I got the Brisket of Beef Entree, comes with your choice of potatoes and vegetable or pasta with bread. I opted for the Spaghetti which was surprisingly good. We shared the pastrami sandwich, corned beef sandwich, matzo ball soup, latkes, and zrazy. My favorites were the zrazy and both the corned beef and pastrami sandwiches. It was my first time trying zrazy, and I really enjoyed it. The potato coating was crispy on the outside, and the meat filling was well-seasoned and full of flavor. Would definitely recommend this item. I was a little disappointed by the latkes. I saw this place on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives and the food looked good. And I immediately marked it as a favorite on my food app so I could try it out. I got pastrami and corn beef on an onion roll with Swiss cheese and chopped liver. It was good. The sandwich was packed with meat and it was delicious and fresh. The onion roll was fresh. I was expecting the chopped liver to be Braunschweiger but it was actual chopped liver and it was good. Everything was fresh and tasty. I met family at Manny's Deli, a historic place to eat, for Saturday brunch. There's a private parking lot in the back. When we showed up, the parking lot was packed, however not much wait time to find a spot- delicious and filling! There was a line to get into deli and the line moved fast. The place was cafeteria style. Staff was super helpful and I could tell they were excellent at their jobs. Each family member ordered either corned beef or corned beef/pastrami sandwiches. Meat was deliciously packed high on each sandwich! Sides, including carrots, Mac&Cheese or latckes completed each order. Drinks are all you can drink. After visiting Katz Deli in NY, I was told that I need to visit Manny's in Chicago. We came late in the afternoon that it wasn't busy. it's cafeteria style with lots of items to choose from; we opted for the Pastrami and Corned Beef Combo, with a Potato Lakte. The sandwich was huge, with generous meat portions. It was delicious! I was told that President Obama frequents this place and I did saw pictures on the wall proving it. Came for my traditional birthday lunch and Manny's never disappoint. I ordered the half pastrami and half corned beef on an onion roll. Everyone behind the counter was super nice and friendly. The place had a nice lunch crowd and as I found a table I had to grab some horseradish from the condiment table. The meat was super tender with great flavor especially with horseradish. First of all, if you want one of the greatest pastrami sandwiches, anywhere, you go to Manny's in Chicago. I've done this dozens of times. This morning, my first experience ordering breakfast at Manny's. I kind of figured that they would have great matzo fry. I was mistaken. The scrambled egg portion of this was just fair. I added salami for $5.95 and there was hardly any salami in the matzo fry. Maybe a half an ounce and it was shaved salami. If you really want a great Mazza fry, go up to Max and Bennie's in Deerfield where the eggs are good and you get the big chunks of salami. read more

We had seen Manny's on tv. We love a good deli and had to try it. I love a reuben and was intrigued by the way that it was prepared on the cafeteria line. There were a pile of pre-made toasted sandwiches on rye with cheese and sauerkraut. They just opened those up and added the meat of your choice. I had the pastrami. I am not sure if the latke was extra, but they asked if I wanted one and I did. My husband wanted roast beef, but they were out. He could have gotten brisket but selected turkey instead. We knew the sandwiches were too big to finish, but we each took home a half and enjoyed the next day for lunch. We stopped in the bakery for some rugelach, and they were delicious. How does Manny's rate as a Jewish Deli? If you're comparing it to those of Southern California, it rates very low. Yet this place is extolled far and wide. Is that because there are no more Jewish delis in Chicago? Do they bring copies of Herzog or Auggie March to tap into the atmosphere of Saul Bellow? That must be the allure. "I am a Ruben sandwich, Chicago born." The hot pastrami is the worst I've ever had. Rye bread, borderline stale, fits around lukewarm pastrami that is none too tender. The kugel, half Mac n cheese, half noodle desert pudding is a strange relic and I'm greatful to them for serving it. But again, is barely warm. Their soda fountain was out of Diet Dr. Pepper. Normally I would accept this from a venerable institution and move forward without a peep. But really, the food here isn't spectacular. So I informed a cashier that said soda could use some changing. And do you know what... Nothing was done. Interesting conversation was heard from a nearby table. A group from the plumbers union say taking shop. Really, one guy did all the talking. He revealed himself later to be of German extraction. Two Mexicans nervously listened and moved food around their plates without really eating. A white collar Irishman was also at the table, and also taciturn because the German's conversation consisted of the trials and tribulations of manual labor, something as foreign to this pencil pushing Irishman as a plate of food, sans tortillas, was to the Mexicans. The German American was a true midwesterner: "do you Irish like your potato pancakes with apple sauce?" Irishman: "we usually do sour cream." "Ok. Sour cream. Us Germans gotta 'ave apple sauce." "You know, Arthur gets it both ways being a black plumber. How you think some one-eyed racist up by Wisconsin is gonna feel about hiring him for a job? Then from his own people. He told me, 'you want to do a job for this lady? She's trying to bankrupt me just cuz we have the same color skin. Everything: free, free. I've been wanting to try Manny's for quite some time, but I could never make it before their 7pm closing time. Their hot sandwiches are impressively piled high and easy to share. A institution of Chicago! Manny's Deli has been here forever and in generations of the family. My buddy took me here. And I tried the corned beef sandwich and the pastrami. As well as the potato latka's. Everything was incredble. I love how they shave the meats. So moist and tender. The rye bread here is incredible. Some of the best jewish deli's in the US. On the tables, there is mustard and horseradish that perfectly cut the fatty meat. There's a parking lot outside in the back of the resturant with free parking and inside there are plenty of tables with comfortable seating. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. I have two separate experiences with Manny's to rate. First, we ordered Manny's catering for brunch for the Sunday after our wedding. We got a selection of sandwiches, a lox platter with bagels, and a dessert platter. Our experience was EXCELLENT. The online ordering was extremely easy, pricing was transparent, and we were able to really customize what we wanted. The delivery arrived about 15 minutes early and they brought so many condiments and goodies we weren't expecting. Then, the food was soooo good and an absolute hit. Like, every single platter was cleared. It was such a perfect decision for such a big day. I cannot recommend catering enough!! Second, after such a success with catering, we knew we had to actually visit the restaurant. I could not believe the size of the place! No worries at all about finding a table. We were a little confused about the counter ordering, but the staff was so nice and helpful. And lemme tell you, the counter ordering is genius, because it made me want EVERYTHING. It's been on my husband's bucket list to go to Manny's and we finally made it! I've never been to a cafe/deli like this before (outside of school) so it was definitely a new experience! Grabbed a tray and some silverware and walked up to the counter to order our food. Prices seemed pretty reasonable, considering it's in the city. Food was very good, but as it's cafeteria style not cooked to order. I got an order of the large Mish Mosh soup with a little bit of everything. It was very good! Husband got the pastrami but got it on a French roll, for the price it didn't seem super worth it, it wasn't quite piled as high as some of the photos which was disappointing, but he was still very full afterwards. Staff was very fast, friendly and helpful. They have a counter after paying for more utensils, drinks, water. Plenty of seating available with people chatting.
