On a busy Saturday, I decided to order ahead for myself and my hangry kids. We ordered Italian, tuna and prosciutto subs. We also threw in an order of tiramisu and the large canoli. We were quoted a time of 20 minutes out. We arrived a little early and the gal at the counter told us it would be a few minutes. She called out when ready and sat at one of the tables in the front to eat. Each sub had a decent amount of filling. While we each offered the smallest subs, we were plenty full when we left. 02/10/26 - Today I was on Taylor Street & wanted to grab a bite to eat. I saw a Potbelly on the corner & thought I might stop there. As I parked this large Chevy Suburban parked in front of me. That's when I saw CONTE DI SAVOIA @ 1438 W Taylor Street on the north side of Taylor Street. I decided to cross over & check out this old world Italian Deli. Conti Di Savoia is small Italian grocery store w/an Italian deli that has w/outstanding & inexpensive sandwiches. When I went in there was a line of people waiting @ the deli counter waiting to place their order. I must have looked confused because the owner directed me & told the line started on the other side towards the back of the store. What I found was an awesome of fresh handmade sandwiches for a very reasonable price. I ordered an 8" pastrami w/mozzarella cheese, shredded lettuce, tomato, red onions, mayo, & Italian oil drizzled. What I got was an awesome inexpensive sandwich loaded with/fresh ingredients. Absolutely delicious. After I got my sandwich the owner (I introduced myself (I think his name was Mike) rang up the sandwich. He said they have been there for 35 years. Came in on a Friday afternoon and it was such a nice day out. They have so many options on the menu but we got their Italian sandwich instead and it was so good. I think I posted once before about this wonderful little Italian store and deli, but I cannot sing their praises enough. It is very nostalgic for me to go there they used to be in another area when I was younger, and my grandma used to take me and I remember her making a snail stew. I don't know the pronunciation of it so I'm not even gonna try but I remember them having the bushel with the fresh snails live and then she would come home and put them in the pot and I'm not sure if she said if they stick to the pot they're good or if they float they're not good vice versa I'm not sure but my God it was so delicious. I had high hopes for this place. It's an authentic Italian deli with a market that has all your classic favorites including pasta, cookies and more. I ordered a turkey sandwich. They forgot all of the condiments I asked for including the giardiniera (extra cost) which was super disappointing. The bread was probably the best part of the sandwich. It was nice and soft. The premise of the sandwich sounded good, though. Roasted red peppers, grilled eggplant, homemade mozzarella, and pesto are a great combo. I then went up to the counter and informed them they forgot the pesto. They responded by saying they ran out, but would jarred work? I'm unsure why they didn't offer a homemade container of it from the back of the store. At any rate, I said fine. I think people underestimate the needs of vegetarians. It's a small yet well stocked Italian market with a deli counter for sandwiches. Their freezers had many takeaway items like lasagna, tortellini and other quick dinner options. The guys at the counter are very friendly, easy going and seemed like the type who would eventually know your order by heart if you were a regular. We stopped in for a quick pastrami turkey sub and it was everything I was craving. Coming from NY I'm spoiled for great (well priced) Italian sub options and I feel like the sub top-list in Chicago is kind of a let down. For the price, taste, meat quantity and overall quality this shop is leading my list so far.
