This cash-only bakery is the oldest bakery in Chicago Chinatown. I stopped by while in Chinatown and got a two pork buns and a Portuguese egg tart. They ran out of their pineapple pork buns but the ones I got were pretty good. The dough is soft and the filling was a good proportion to the size of the bun. The egg tart was light and custardy, the texture where it melts in your mouth. Service was quick since the pastries are ready made. There was a line but I didn't wait long at all (10-15 min). Heads up it seems like tours tend to bring people into the store to talk about the history. There is only one counter by the window if you are wanting to enjoy your items inside, this is more of an on the go stop.

Super long kiss be that moved quickly with friendly patrons waiting their turn, knowing soon they'd have deliciousness in their hands - visiting from CA, we couldn't get too many but we did get some bbq pork buns, pineapple buns, tarts - and all quickly served up with a smile - all items were simply delicious - we were supposed to go to lunch but we ate all of our bakery goodies, and had to wait a bit before heading out to lunch lol. Would definitely come here often if I lived here - much better than the prepackaged items found at other Chinese bakeries. Yum yum!

Was not aware this was the oldest bakery in Chinatown, but it makes sense cuz my parents were taking my siblings and me there at least 25yrs ago. I never knew the name of the bakery, but I always knew what it looked like, so after several years, when my friend and I decided to go to Chinatown the other day, I was heartbroken not to see the bakery in its usual spot. We happened upon another bakery just a bit further down, and the sponge cakes looked EXACTLY the way I remembered as a kid. That's when I thought maybe this was the same bakery. Thank goodness for Yelp and old photos because it WAS! I'm so so happy the bakery is around and continues to do well! And that, as an adult, I now finally know the name! I don't think you can go wrong with anything you get here, but my personal faves are the sponge cake and BBQ pork bun. Prices are fair, the employees are quick, the place is clean and bright, and the goods are great. I don't normally carry cash, but thank god I had some on me that day cuz note: it is CASH ONLY. I'm grateful to Chiu Quon bakery for the nostalgia and family memories the flavors of the baked goods brings back, and I'm happy to be able to report back to my parents that the bakery still exists! I'll be back for sure!

This is our usual go-to for Cantonese baked goods. To name a few items: 1) Hot dog bun 2) Barbecue pork bun 3) Pineapple bun 4) Custard bun 5) Steamed white sugar cake 6) Paper-wrapped sponge cake 7) Wife cake 8) Egg tarts 9) Portuguese egg tarts 10) Lotus seed pastry We would also occasionally purchase the freezer goods such as steamed barbecue pork buns and custard buns to steam at home with dim sum to have a quick lunch without having to drive from the suburbs to Chinatown.

Chiu Quon Bakery - A Classic That Still Hits In the heart of Chicago's Chinatown, surrounded by newer, trendier bakeries, Chiu Quon quietly holds its ground. No fuss, no gimmicks, just really good, traditional Hong Kong-style baked goods that remind you why classics stick around. From BBQ pork buns to lotus and red bean baby mooncakes, everything we tried was fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. The kind of place where you keep pointing at the case saying, "Let's try one more." And then actually do. The service is friendly and they are very patient. We almost went for the pastéis de nata, which looked incredible, but decided to stay on theme. When in Chinatown, you commit. We grabbed a mix of goodies, walked over to the little open area nearby, and ended up having one of those spontaneous, low-key perfect lunches. Nothing fancy, just good food and a moment that felt easy. If you're looking for authentic, no-nonsense baked treats, this place delivers. Sometimes simple really is the whole point.

This bakery is cash only and has a small counter by the window where you can stand and eat. There are no tables or chairs. Good variety of pastries, beautiful fruit cakes, and bao buns in the cooler that you can warm up at home to eat. The egg tart was standard. The custard egg bun was thick and creamy, and the topping was light and delicious. Prices are pretty reasonable.

I brought a bunch of baked treats, but they didn't quite make it into my photos! I managed to snag one of each item I thought my fam & I would enjoy. I was in a hurry because the line was already forming outside the store. It would have been faster to pay for everything with card, but they accept CASH ONLY! We enjoyed japanese cheesecake, red bean pastry, laughing sesame cookies, some of their mochis, fried buns

I always, always choose Chiu Quon Bakery whether it's just for a quick run for myself, for my family or for special treats for my Caucasian friends, who have not tried them, but always delight in receiving/eating goodies from them! There is no better Chinese bakery to make their authentic specialties like barbecue pork bun, egg tarts, ham/egg buns, sticky rice, sponge cake, melon cake, mini mooncakes, custom birthday/wedding fruit cakes and so much more! Having grown up living in the heart of Chinatown all my life, I can't say enough about Chiu Quon Bakery! Their variety, freshness, and affordable prices have made me a lifelong fan along with many celebrities and food bloggers nationwide. Kudos to the wonderful Chiu family for their continued success and dedication to the neighborhood and community!

BBQ pork melon buns are delicious! Flaky on the outside and soft inside with delicious sweet bbq pork filling. Love the milk bread, egg custard melon bun, and hot dog bun too! Amazing service.

Good food. Quick and easy for a few bites. We got the sesame ball and Portuguese egg tart. Each item was approximately 2.50 each. Cash only.

Reasonably priced Chinese bakery in Chinatown. Gets pretty packed, but the line moves fast. We got the bbq Pork bun, pineapple bun with red bean, cheung fun, steamed pork bun. The buns would have been better if they could toast or warm it up. President Obama has even been here!

While traveling to Chicago for work, I dropped by CQ Bakery for a quick bread. Services was quick and kind - prices seemed fair and comparable to typical asian style bakeries (think Paris Baguette). I had a red bean bun and a lotus mooncake and both were DIVINE. The red bean bun was generously filled (something that's honestly hard to find these days) and the mooncake was decadent without being sickingly sweet. Would come back!

Delightful bakery in Chicago's Chinatown. I brought my travel buddy here because they'd never had BBQ pork buns... and while I wish the pork inside had been the Cantonese red pork-style, the mixture inside these pork buns was just as delicious. It's also nice that they bake the buns vs steam them. I enjoy both, but prefer the texture of the baked buns if I had to pick between the two. The bakery itself is somewhat small and doesn't really allow for eating inside the shop. Also, be forewarned: they don't accept credit cards (cash and Apple Pay only), though they do have an ATM in case you need to withdraw... and I mention this because I had to take out $20 to pay for the pork buns we ordered. After paying for them, we just opted to continue sauntering through Chinatown and enjoy. Service was friendly and quick.

Ask the Community - Chiu Quon Bakery & Dim Sum

How early do you have to get there to get a bbq pork bun?

I was there around 4pm on a Saturday and was able to get one.

    Do they sell coconut buns?

    Yes.

Are the buns cooked with lard?

Yes, lard is used as an ingredient in the bakery for some of the buns.

Has anyone tried their cakes? The strawberry flavor one? Looking to order a cake for a graduation in Chicago but I am ordering from out of state!…

Overall, I'd say their cakes are quite good. I've ordered a couple of times (mixed fruit filling) for birthdays and graduation. The cakes are this really fluffy angel cakes with fruit and icing filling. The icing is really airy and not overly sweet.… Read more

Do they offer any vegan options at Chiu Quon Bakery?

Honestly? Probably not. I have a shrimp allergy and it's hard enough to do that - much less find anything truly vegetarian. Vegan is another step harder. They mean we'll, but I'd be cautious of even any sincere vegan offerings.

MingHin was packed, loud, and a little chaotic. Worth it. Dim sum is an experience as much as a meal and MingHin delivers on both fronts. We ordered more than we could keep track of. Soup dumplings that immediately became the kids' personal obsession. Shu mai that hit every time. BBQ pork buns in every form they offered because obviously. Chinese broccoli to balance out the indulgence. Everything was solid, fresh, and exactly what you want from a dim sum spread. The room was packed and buzzing but the service kept up impressively. Servers were constantly circling, clearing empty plates and dishes without missing a beat. Clean and attentive even at full capacity, which is no small thing. Fair warning if you are bringing little ones: this environment is a lot. The noise, the crowd, the overwhelming parade of food arriving at the table. Our kids loved what they ate but the sensory experience was a bit much for them. This is a place better suited for a group of adventurous adults or older kids who thrive in high energy environments. Prices are great for the quality and quantity of food you get. A Chinatown institution for good reason. Just know what you are walking into and embrace it fully.

This is a fantastic place for larger groups, and they're very accommodating when it comes to splitting checks. The food comes out quickly, the atmosphere is lively, and there's plenty of variety for everyone. If you're in the area near Joy Yee, MingHin is definitely worth a visit!

Be prepared to wait a little bit for a table, or share a big one with another party at peak times. Prices are reasonable and portions are pretty generous. ===== Kind of lost count of how many times I've been. Love getting the dim sum and noodle dishes here. Some favorites: beef cheong fun with egg, siu mai, Singapore noodle, xo rice noodle rolls, spare ribs, pork and century egg congee. All the food has been very solid. Inside is always bustling and can be a bit crowded. Service is pretty friendly as far as Chinatown goes, and very efficient. There's a guy who works there who I think is the manager or something, because he puts in 200x effort and is always hustling. When he's not around it feels like something is missing. Prices are very reasonable and we like ordering a lot here so that we have tasty leftovers for later. This place has quite a few big tables and is good for large groups. My only nits are that very occasionally a dish or teacup will have a dirty spot, and that the bubble tea here is kind of meh. I don't remember exactly which one I ordered, but it was a little watery and lacking in flavor. It's also probably tough since they're boxed in by boba places now. Pro tip: When you first get your table, they'll ask you what kind of tea you want. If you ignore them or don't know how to answer, the default is green tea. Another one is to come at off-peak times. Not only will you get a table faster, but I think they tweak their portion sizes depending on how crowded it is. Definitely will be back! And I recommend you visit too
