Looking for a good haircut that won't break the bank on the Upper East Side? Look no further! J&O is amazing at what they do. It is a very tiny barber shop (3 seats, I believe) but don't let the size or the laid back attitude fool you, these guys know what they are doing, and this is coming from a guy whose parents were both hair stylists. I have been to this place twice, both times getting my hair cut by Jay and he knows how to give you what you want. I explained to him how long I wanted the top and sides and the general shape I wanted and he cut exactly to my specifications. As is general barber style, he goes over with clippers first and then does the the fine tuning with his regular and layering scissors. To add to the ambiance of the place, they constantly have a hi-def LCD TV on playing some various sitcom for both your and their enjoyment. The haircut has gone up one dollar since the first time I went and is now $15 for a regular haircut. Still, at $15, you won't find a cheaper place on the Upper East Side. The final touch of this place is that at the end of the haircut (at least Jay does this) they put a vibrating mechanism on their hand and run their hand over your shoulders, presumably to get the remaining hair off of you, but regardless of the real reason it feels like a mini massage that you don't have to pay extra for! The only reason I'm not giving this place 5 stars is that I have gotten a slightly better haircut at Astor Place and it is slightly cheaper there. But seriously, if you're in the neighborhood and looking to lower your ears (yeah, i said it), hit this place up. read more

I've been here and walked out super excited because I just got a great hair cut for a great price, but other times it seems like either I mis-communicated what I wanted or something else happened, and I just didn't get what I wanted. I used to come here before I moved to the west side, and I loved it. I figured I would try a place closer to me and realized before the haircut was even over that that was a HUGE mistake. The new guy I tried started shaving my beard after I specifically told him not to, and then he gave me an uneven cut to the point my girl had to fix it at home.
