I'll start off by saying I did like the tarts at Manteigaria but they aren't the best I had in Lisbon and I honestly would not eat them again. The service was great (I feel like they only had male models working up front which didn't bother me at all) and the tarts were well priced at €1 each. Sooooo flaky you think it's philo. But they have mastered the flaky ness and to keep it crunchy for over 16 hrs. I had an extra one for breakfast and it was still crunchy. I thought these would be like your dim sum egg tarts but they are not. They are their 3rd cousins. The eggy part is not as eggy, it's a little more runny, and just as sweet. My favorite custard shop in Lisbon so far! As I've learned from my time here, the egg custard tart is a traditional/local favorite and all the bakeries seem to make their own variation of this. Manteigaria churns our 90 new tarts every 5 minutes or so and the chances of you getting freshly made tarts is always very high. Ask for the tarts to eat their with a small cafe and milk to snag a standing spot at the counter. Manage this and you get to watch the process that goes into making new tarts! It is quite the show and an excellent after lunch treat or mid-day snack. I have visited each of the 3 days I've been in Lisbon and will be back for more! read more

Highly rated on both Yelp and TripAdvisor, plus the line outside at 12AM signaled that something great was about to happen... The Pasteis de Nata did not disappoint . Flaky crust, piping hot custard-y middle mmMMMM. We were so lucky to get a brand new batch fresh from the oven. I knew it was good when the hubby and I took our first bite simultaneously and he closed his eyes to savor it. He only glanced up to eye another piece. No joke, he ran back in line when he saw it was closing time and only one sheet left...lucky for him they are so busy with mass orders that there were tons left coming out of the oven. I've tried both Manteigaria and Belem's famous egg tarts and I can personally say Manteigaria is superior, hands down. My friends all told me that I'd like Manteigaria better and what can I say? They know me well. These egg tarts are much softer and much more custardy(?). The ones at Belem were very flaky and yummy but I could definitely taste the egg in it, which is fine, but it wasn't anything I was too crazy about. The ones at Manteigaria are super creamy and just absolutely delicious. Do yourself a favor and buy the 6pack for 6 Euros. If I could eat the egg tarts from Manteigaria every single day for the rest of my life, I would. The pastis de Belem and the egg tarts in Sintra were also delicious, but this place was closest to my Airbnb when I was in Lisbon. It also specializes in ONLY egg tarts, so you know they know exactly what the heck they're doing! The shop isn't too big but the service is super quick. There's a small counter/bar further in with cinnamon and powdered sugar dispensers if you want to eat there and watch the bakers work. The egg tarts are like little creme brulees held in a pastry shell. The tart shell is the perfect amount of flakiness without falling apart with each bite, and the custard itself is rich, creamy and so smooth. It's not too sweet, but the hot heat of their oven (and I guess Portuguese ovens in general) give the egg tarts a nice crispy shell on the top so the first bite has a nice crunch like when you're breaking a creme brulee shell! Seriously, go to this place if you're in Lisbon and get all the egg tarts you can before leaving! read more

To die for! The outer part is crusty,crunchy and the inner is so creamy yet no taste or smell of egg like some tart I use to get in LA. So it was our first day in Lisboa and we were just wondering around with no direction and saw the line in this place was long. Some old lady told me, when the line is long, it must be good. Located right in Lisbon, it's a must. The pastel de natas are warm and fresh (even more so first thing in the morning) and the line is typically never more than five people out the door but don't take that as an indication of poor quality - quite the opposite! The custard is creamy and they've perfected the flakiness of the outer crust. They ring the bell when the fresh batches are ready - that's the cue to queue! Best pasteis de nata ever! Flaky, buttery tart and warm, slightly cinnamony, runny custard - it's pure perfection. Be sure to sprinkle a little powdered sugar and cinnamon, too. In comparison, Pasteis de Belem has a tougher, chewier, crispy (almost stale-like) tart and their custard is slightly thicker, less smooth, and not as sweet as Manteigaria. I much prefer Manteigaria, and their location is a huge bonus. These are also cheaper too - only a euro each! Save yourself a couple euros on transportation to Belem and buy a few more tarts here. Forewarning, these tarts don't keep well, nothing against Manteigaria but just Portuguese tarts in general. Lisbon was my last stop on my 2 and a half month backpacking trip and thought these would be a nice treat for my family. They pack nicely in pairs or in groups of 6. This is seriously the best nata I've ever had in my life. My mouth had an orgasm at first bite. I've had portuguese egg tarts in Hong Kong, Macau, New York and maybe San Francisco (can't recall) but they're nothing compared to this place! Having been to Pastéis de Belém, I was expecting to come here, and be wow'd since this place had 5 stars. However, this was just ok. I think most people really give this place good reviews because they have not tried any other of these pastries. The cream was not really warm, and the base was not flaky relative to the pastry I got in Belem. Had I been here first, I think I would've liked it a bit more, but since it was the second one I had and had a basis for comparison, I wasn't a fan. I also only ordered 3 of them to split, but dealt with an employee who has very adamant on getting a 4th since he had to utilize a second to go box and it would've been a better fit. this was the first place in Portugal that we sampled pastel de nata, and honestly, the others kinda paled in comparison. none were bad, but Manteigaria was the only one we ended up returning to. it's small. I think there are a handful of stools to sit on, but it's not really a place to linger. but those tarts come out hot and fresh with a delightfully flaky dough and you'll probably just scarf them down right there. they make pastel de nata. that's it. oh, there's also coffee. you come here, you get the pastel de nata, and you get a sleeve of them because portion control doesn't exist on vacation. watching the bakers do their magic from behind the glass panel is wonderful. get a sleeve and stuff yourself silly. you'll deserve it after hiking the hills of this city. read more
