In all honesty, Portugal's signature dessert - Pastel de Nata - is good everywhere you find it. Best, perhaps, when fresh from the oven and here at Manteigaria (the most popular pastry chain in town) you'll know exactly when that is because they strike a big gong when a fresh batch emerges. On an e-bike tour of Lisbon's 7 hills we stopped here, at our guide's direction, pretty much right as the gong sounded. Warm, eggy, sweet, flaky crust... nothing one can't enjoy. We sat outside consuming our bounty (with coffee drink accompaniment). It was a quick stop but only because staying longer would've no doubt meant eating more. So back on that e-bike and up another hill, but fortified now with an authentic and satisfying taste of fresh-from-the-oven Pastel de Nata.
My first pastel de nata In Portugal and by far my favorite one!! There was a line for the place out the door, but it went super quickly. They staff is super quick and efficient with getting people in and out. I just got one to taste and it was absolutely delicious! The crust was flaky and soft with a bit of a crunch to it and the filling was sweet but not overly sweet. It was the perfect bite and I finished it within 3 bites. They do have some outdoor seating tables covered, which is nice. There are plenty of locations throughout Lisbon and I believe Portugal. Check it out you won't regret it!
Manteigaria was the second tart shop that we went to in Lisbon. We bookmarked all its locations, but we were able to go to the Bairro Alto one only. There was no line that night so we were able to be served immediately. Just like what we did at Pastéis de Belém, we bought a six-pack to-go but tried a couple tarts right off the gate. We loved the flakier crust and the smoother filling. It was also less sweet than the other ones we have tried. We managed to try a few other Portuguese tart places and Manteigaria was our favorite. We hope to make it back here someday.
Okay, so I realize this is the most popular pastry chain in Portugal but it's for good reason. I heard someone say this is their favorite pastel de nata even after visiting Portugal multiple times and at first, I didn't believe her. But after trying a few others around town, this was by far my favorite. The crust is perfectly flakey with layers and layers of thin pastry. The filling is sweet and creamy like a creme brulee. It's even better if you can manage to snag a warm one. It was absolutely delicious and everything I had hoped for from this classic Portuguese pastry. It lives up to the hype! Even if there is a line, it moves fast. The interior is your typical pastry shop. They also have coffee and espresso.
Best pastel de natas of my entire trip and maybe my life. Even better than Pastei de Belem in my opinion. This location does it better than the Manteigaria next to Pastei de Belem (unfortunate that there is inconsistency between stores). Staff were friendly and helpful--giving us instructions on how to best enjoy. The standing bar layout is interesting and I really liked the open kitchen concept!!
Can get a little hot standing in line... What Pasteis de nata ofcourse! I went in the afternoon so I had to stay away from caffeine but it would've been the perfect pairing for me. This was my first bite of a pasteis in portugal! I thought it was great. I enjoy the outer pastry shell and also the stuffing (?). I also had the lemonade they had, this was more on the sweet side for me. I should've gone with a coffee Environment It is a fairly small location. most people buy takeout. There is a standing bar area inside and this can fit a good amount of people to just eat a couple of eggtarts and leave. Oh, and to watch them getting made, quite impressive. Niceness of the staff In busy places - there isn't much interactions. But despite there being a line, they are all very patient and I was able to get my pasteis! Dollar It was around 1.2Eu for one Yes/No Yes I would buy here again, and would recommend!
One of the top pasteis de nata in Lisbon. It is worth the visit to try the dessert when visiting the city. This place has a seating outside and a quick standup service. The service is quick and they give you a fresh tart right away. They make it in house and always fresh since many people order so the turnover is fast. The custard was very creamy and crust is flaky. Definitely work going back here again for a second Lisbon visit.
Great, friendly service and outdoor seating. This was my favorite pastel de nata in Lisbon. The custard wasn't overly sweet, in my opinion and was a perfect consistency. The pastry is flaky but doesn't fall apart, like others I've had in town. They are served warm, too. You can watch the pastry chefs make them inside. The coffee is decent, as well. The few times I've been here, I've had a great experience.
This was one of my favorite pastel de nata in the city. It was served warm, the crust was crisp and flaky, the custard was silky, creamy and luscious, yet not overly sweet. I had my husband pick them up so unfortunately, I did not experience the service so cannot comment on it but will update the review if I do end up returning again.
Heaven. You have died and gone to heaven. Oh wait, not yet, because you can buy more Pasteis de Nata from Manteigeria. This food might have been the single largest reason we went to Portugal. Ok, I exaggerate, but it was definitely one of the top reasons (we had it in London once and we're like - WHAT?!?!?! I need more) We had Pasteis de Nata first at the Manteigeria in the Time Out Market (our first day here). Then next morning went to the main Manteigeria place in town (this one) and it was even better - if that is possible. You get to see them make them at this place. Oh, then went back to Time Out and had another round in the afternoon. Will go there one more time tomorrow before we leave for Porto - they better have them there. (Diet restarts when we get back to Colorado) We heard that some people say that Pasteis de Belem are the original ones, but others told us Manteigeria are just as good, if not better, and not the big trip to Belem. Since I am now eating these hourly, going to Belem would be a problem. Just try to not have them daily, if not more often. read more
One of the best Natas in town! Pastéis de Nata is a Portuguese treat you must try when visiting Portugal! But you must know where to get the perfect ones for your first bite! For those who may not know, Pastel de nata is a Portuguese egg custard tart pastry created before the 18th century by Catholic monks at the Hieronymites Monastery. We were strolling downtown Lisbon in the Chiado neighborhood when we ran into Manteigaria by chance. They are known for making one of the best Natas in town. The shop was once part of a butter shop and reopened as a custard tarts factory. In Manteigaria, the tarts are continuously made in front of you throughout the day. The shop is long, so you can order upfront and walk inside. There are no tables, but there is a counter where you can stand and watch through the glass, the Natas being prepared as you bite on one and wash it down with expresso. The Natas here mirror the originals from Pasteis de Belém. They are a crispy, flaky dough filled with delicious cream and slightly burnt on top. read more

A great location, on a busy street and luckily a block from my air bnb! Dangerous if you ask me! Quick service, I ordered two for breakfast and ate there. They were fresh and oh so crispy! The crust was flakey, buttery and the custard was smooth and a bit sweeter than Belém. I probably will be spending most of my money on these heavenly pasteis! read more

This is the number one spot to try the Pastel de Natas. This is an a great area with lots of fun surrounding shops and restaurants nearby. The service is awesome. Staff members are friendly. These custard treats are rather delicious and a must while in Lisboa. read more

We were told that this is the place to go get pasteis de nata and it did not disappoint! The custard tarts were still hot from the oven. The flaky crust was buttery and the custard filling was amazing! We waited in a like for a couple minutes, but given the number of people in line, it moved very fast. We also ordered some port to go with the pastries and it truly was a perfect match. We sprinkled some cinnamon and powdered sugar on top as we were instructed and that made them somehow even better! We actually went here twice during our trip to Lisbon it was that good! And as a bonus, there is a stall in the TimeOut Market. read more

Ok I originally gave this place a 5 star review because I had the pastry at two different locations and they did not notice any differences. So in my mind this pastry is good wherever you try it. Then this morning I tried it at the original bakery in Belem and man there was a big difference. So sorry I had to edit my review to 3.5 star. read more

Did someone say Pasteis de Nata? These were so fresh and delicious and we ate ours while watching them make them. Flaky crispy with wonderful creamy custard. I could have eaten several of them. This is one of our favorite places to get them. read more

I tried egg tarts from 6 different places in 4 days and can confirm this was #1 for me. I wish it was warmer but it still tasted divine. This tart was perfection. Baked perfectly with a nice crunch, creamy custard that wasn't too gooey, heavenly taste and ugh wish I could eat this every day with my coffee. You truly have to stop here when visiting Lisbon! read more
Still the best pasteis de nata in Lisbon! Go during the weekday and there won't be lines. Also pro tip: these freeze very well! I had four 6-packs frozen together plus an ice pack. They made it just fine in my checked bag, 14 hours from door to door. Just pop them in the toaster oven or air fryer and the pastry gets all crispy again.just heavenly. read more

I think it may be illegal to leave Portugal without trying a nata from Manteigaria. If you are to eat anything sweet, this is a must try. Different from the natas I've had in other countries, this is much more milk based versus egg based. This means it's creamier and lighter, which also means you can eat a couple more than usual. A win-win! Wish it was served hot, but even cold it is amazing. read more
My favorite spot for pastel de nata - still dreaming about them! The perfect ratio of flakiness, custard, and crunch. Sprinkle a little cinnamon on top for even more to love. I loved having them when they were warm but they still taste amazing if you have them cold. Will book a trip back to Portugal just for these! read more
Well I searched this one out based on yelper recommendations! I was NOT disappointed. This is a take way pastry stop. They make the most delicious custard mini pie pastries that are famous here in Lisbon. And you can watch them make these little yummy beauties!! Busy place and it moves quick!! And a great latte too!! read more

In my opinion Manteigaria has the best Pastel de Nata around! The crust is flaky, fresh, crispy and the cream inside is very creamy and soft. Pair it with an espresso or one of their delicious cappuccino's which I also have to say we're one of the best coffee's I had in Portugal. They are also consistent in their product as I had their Pastel de Nata and Coffee in Lisbon and in Porto, and they tasted deliciously the same at all their locations. A must go to, to pick up a snack and eat it on the go! read more

This is all they make and coffee. That's how good they are that they can just sell this and be in business. Went in like 3 times. It's not your typical Nata dessert. If you add some cinnamon on top and sugar it's great as well. They have multiple locations so if you find one try it out. read more
Manteigaria makes the best egg tarts. They are here to do one thing, which is to make pastéis de nata. There is just one long counter with a glass wall separating the narrow standing eating area with the narrow kitchen. The further back you go, the more you can see of the assembly line. The luscious cream tarts are just better in every regard. The crust has more layers and is crispier than the other places. The custard is creamier and more buttery and smoother than anywhere else. The caramelization is prettier and tastier than the rest. Please don't bother me, I need to finish eating my next egg tart. Ironically enough, this used to be a butter shop. read more
I've heard so much about this for my trip here. Hadn't had one yet because I wanted to get a great one. THIS IS THE PLACE. it's all they do and you can see them make it in the back. It was nice to eat mine for €1.10 and eat it at the "bar" in the back and watched them make all of them. The front woman got me a hot and fresh one. A friendly German lady told me to add cinnamon on top - do it. So amazing. The custard is warm. The rim is flakey. Such a delicacy. read more

Wow! The Pastel de Nata! I mean, come on! After spending a week in Portugal and trying almost every shops version of this delicacy that I've come across, this place has to be the best that I've encountered so far! Service is simple and quick; order at the register and you have your little nuggets of happiness in your hands. The shop is simple with a long, slender counter in which to enjoy. The Pastel de Nata's themselves are worth the wait (if you have to)! There's something to be said when a shop specializes in one thing and this place nails it!!! read more

First time trying natas! Love how you can see the process of making them! They were so custardy and gooey - and enjoyed the powdered sugar and cinnamon that you can top them off with yourself. Very good dessert!! Service was quick - small space so more of a grab and go situation! read more

ok the pasteles de nata are AMAZING. The inside was sooo creamy and melted in my mouth and I loved adding in the powdered sugar and cinnamon on top. I loved the crust as well and now it flaked away while eating the pastry. The service was fast and the staff was nice! read more
One of the best places in Lisbon for pastel de nata! Pastel de nata is a classic in Portugal culture! It is a cream filled pastry that is incomparable to other things. Out of all the places I tried in Lisbon, this chain had the best ones by far! The service is extremely quick, but it's a little hard to eat at the physical locations. Warning! It costs a bit extra to take coffee or such to-go so be wary of that! read more

Let's be honest... any pastel de nata gets my attention; they're simply delicious! We were recommended this place and decided to give it a try after scrolling through countless of great reviews. The shop is a cute but small shop that serves warm drinks and of course their pastels. They have a standing area where you get a great view of the manufacturing process. Our pastels were delicious, however, they weren't warm! They would have been 1000% more delicious if they were nice and warm. Ask your waiter if they're able to warm it up for you; definitely recommend stopping by as you roam around the great city of Lisboa. read more
