Fairly good pasteis de nata and probably the best ones you can get outside of Belem. The pastry was nice and flaky, the filling was balanced and sweet, and the pastel de nata was served warm. They're especially good covered in cinnamon. They were my third favorite pastel de nata we had in Portugal, but I would still happily come back and eat more of these. This location only has a small counter where you can eat your pastry standing up, and it's kind of annoying having to squeeze around people to find a spot at the counter, which is why they don't get a full 5 stars. Yes - the reviews are all true. This is some of the very best pastel de nata you'll have. The place couldn't be any more straight forward than it is: 1. Walk in 2. Order at the register 3. Stay for the quick bite OR take 'em to go. The cafe is narrow, with a long ledge, facing the kitchen/prep station. There are no seats, rather the intent is for you to take a few minutes and enjoy an espresso with your pastel de nata - not to linger. The cool thing is, just on the opposite side of the glass from where the ledge is, you can see the bakers preparing and turning out hundreds of pastel de nata while you enjoy yours. You can also take them to go - across the street is the square which is great for people watching - a fine, outdoor sport. Plain and simple, the pastry was amazing. These are truly the best pastel de nata (Portuguese custard tarts) you will ever have --hands down. The custard filling is so velvety, creamy, and gooey while the pastry tart was flaky and crispy. This is how they should all taste, wow. Even though I was stuffed from dinner, I couldn't help devouring a couple of these. The shop is small and only makes one pastry, which is all you ever need in life. You know a place does something the best when that is the only item they sell. Even if you see a line, don't be intimidated as it goes by quickly. Each pastel de nata is €1.10, which is usually sold by one, two, or six packs. I love that if you get it as takeaway, they pack it into these cute tubular boxes. This also made for a great gift, which I bought a dozen back as souvenirs. It may not be the original, but it is a DANG good pastel de nata. Although you are paying a premium for their pastries, they come out fresh and beautiful -- they definitely do taste better warm. As with other places, you can get a 6-pack to go if you want to impress your friends back home. Manteigaria serves some of the best pastel de nata that I've had in Portugal! It is the only thing they make and so, as I walked in, I was taken aback by the smell of sweet custard. They make it all by hand and in shop so you can watch them as they pump out these delicious treats. When there's only one item that they specialize in and sell, you know it's good. A bonus is that they open until midnight for a tasty snack at night! They ring a bell when a fresh batch comes out so make sure to head towards the sound if you hear it! It tastes so much better warm. The Portuguese tart has an extremely flakey and buttery crust that is also very crispy. The custard filling is very smooth and definitely a bit on the sweeter side. It had more of a caramelized flavor than the eggy flavor that I'm used to in the Chinese style egg tarts. They also have cinnamon or powdered sugar on the side to add to your tart if you want but it's definitely not needed! This spot is definitely a must try. It's the perfect size to leave you satisfied but it's also incredibly affordable (at only 1.10 euros) so even if you want another one, you can probably find the change to get it! read more

According to our local guide, absolutely the top spot for the local iconic pastries of Lisbon. We were told the difference was the butter (not margarine) crusts. At 1€ each, they are a nice mid-afternoon snack or after lunch indulgence. You can watch the staff continually making and baking the luscious treats in the tiny shop. Our first stop in Lisbon and of course, we had to try the famous Portuguese egg tarts. Manteigaria is located in the city, so it's a convenient place to stop by for some egg tarts while you are roaming the city streets. The place is tiny and only has a bar by the front where you can stand while eating the egg tarts. A small line formed when we arrived, but it moved quickly as most people took the egg tarts to-go. The Portuguese egg tarts cost €1, which is really cheap for such a delicious snack! I got two egg tarts to munch on, but could've probably went for three or even four. I thought that the main differences between these and the Chinese egg tarts are that the crust is crunchier and a the filling is caramelized.
