Short version: butter chicken and tikka masala were both too sweet, they don't automatically come with rice, food and drinks were inedible Walking down Castro St, the Indian food smelled so good. Ordered my usual - butter chicken and garlic naan. I usually ask for a 4/10 spicy level. I probably should have been a bit alarmed when they didn't ask the spiciness level at all (I'm a blonde mid-30s white woman) and when they said it didn't automatically come with rice (when does tikka masala or butter chicken not automatically come with rice?!?!). They bring out the butter chicken and it wasn't spicy at all - it was super sweet! Literally tasted like sweet tomato soup. Asked if we could exchange it for tikka masala instead. Server said he would make it medium spicy. The tikka masala was spicier, which was better, but it was still super sweet. Why are they adding so much sugar to these dishes?? Is this a regional thing? There were a lot of Indian patrons at the restaurant. Not sure what the deal was. None of us in our group could eat the butter chicken or the tikka masala. The garlic naan was good. Both the Honey Bee Smash and Side Car drinks were so gross, neither person could finish them. This is a restaurant someone could not pay me to eat at again, it was that bad. Didn't realise that the crab cake would be YUUGE!!! Flaky, not too spicy. Veg Thali, Malai chicken kabab, paneer tikka and lemon sea bass for entree. Observation: Mantra's Tandoori chef (or whoever mans the Tandoor) is AWESOME!!!! Man, the chicken and the paneer and the fish were tender, well done with just the right bit of char. Two platters of Tandoor were polished off with gusto. The Thali was okay except that the choley was almost dbaba-style (hint of sweet, mild and easy on the tummy). Attentive and prompt service. Had a wonderful experience at Mantra India tonight. We sat outside, and though it was a little chilly, the heated lamps kept us warm and comfortable. The restaurant had a wonderful ambiance with music in the background, great food, and wonderful staff. Our waiter, Karan, was extremely kind, recommended great food, and constantly checked up on us. So we visited this place very ravenous and very late for the lunch buffet because we had just run a half marathon and were super ravenous. We attached the lunch buffet with fervour since we were told we had only about 20 minutes until closing. What definitely stood out was the chaat section and the fish curry which I relished with rice. The selection of dishes was good - both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. An option of daal, a paneer dish, goat curry, butter chicken and a few mixed vegetables. I only wish they had more options in the grilled section/ appetizers. The veggie appetizers were good though. Disclaimer - This review is about their customer service (specifically about the person who attended the phone call) So I order from GrubHub for a pickup and it was scheduled to pick up by 9.20pm on June 9th (restaurant closes at 10 according to GrubHub). Since I had to drive from San Mateo, it took a bit of time and on the way when I checked the app, it said the pickup has been scheduled for tomorrow as the restaurant is closed. So I call them up the next day (today) to check if the order is still valid. I explained the whole situation to the person, and this is how he responds - "Yesterdays order is for yesterday, we don't give it for today". It's not what he said, but the way he said as if he gives 0 fucks. I'm explaining it to him in a calm and composed way and he was just responding back with full attitude. I mean bruh, a simple answer of "check with GrubHub" would've been suffice, you don't have to rub all those attitude on me. Well, congrats on losing a customer. read more

Mantra Indian restaurant is the nicest ambienced Indian restaurant I ever been to. The buffet items was delicious. The buffet at $20 per person was a reasonable price. I especially liked the tandoori chicken, rice pudding w lychee and rose water, the different biryanis - goat biryani and vegetable biryani. The restaurant is a long narrow shaped. They make the most of the long space. The restaurant was packed the day we ate there. Service operated like clock work. The servers knew the routine. I like how the first half of the buffet time were the meat dishes, mostly chicken dishes. The 2nd half of the buffet was the vegetarian section. I like how the buffet items were not dried up. There was a fast turnover bc they had rotating line of customers. Inside of Mantra is stylish decoration. It was very positive, pleasant eating experience. My husband, daughter and I visited for dinner. We selected the non-vegetarian dinner option. Although the menu indicates you can choose any dish, it's a pre-fixed menu and making any substitutions was a tough conversation. It was a good amount of food for $20 (although don't expect refills if you elect the soda option). The food was good, not great. The butter chicken did stand out. The reason I'm giving this two stars is because as a woman, I felt invisible to our waiter. He only looked my husband in the eye, he only spoke to him (including when he came to check on how we were doing. It seemed he could have cared less about my satisfaction), and my husband was served first for every serving. And I'm six months pregnant! I hope this restaurant stops discriminating against women and starts to embrace equality. read more

This review is for their lunch buffet. To start off, I love me a good Indian lunch buffet. I try to find them everywhere I go and probably 6/10 times I leave feeling pretty "meh" but also pretty full so it does the trick. I just moved to the area and this place was AWESOME. They had a massive selection and I started my first plate off with a sampling of things including their goat curry, chana masala, and some other kind of delicious curry I can't remember the name of. After that I went back for an entire plate overflowing with egg rolls (yes, I said egg rolls) and chicken tikka masala. You could not have found a happier girl on Castro street. The food was constantly being refilled and our service was very good despite sitting outside and across the sidewalk from the actual restaurant. The lunch buffet comes with a soda or tea (with refills) and a basket of very tasty, hot naan (did not confirm refills on that). Basically, if you live here you've probably already been here. If you're visiting or just moved to town, this should absolutely be on your list of places to try. read more

Overall the size of the bowls was small considering the price. The variety is completely different than other local options, and everything tasted fresh. Wasn't full of fried stuff, which many of the buffets are. Lots of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. Meh, there are so many better Indian restaurant options in the area. Their menu is misleading (their "veg" and "non-veg" 3 course dinner options don't specify that you don't get to actually CHOOSE your dishes, they are set but not listed), their service is attentive but non-communicative (they also started clearing my plate before I was done eating, and while my companion was still obviously eating), and their butter chicken was oddly spicy. I did like their buttered naan, but it was a rather skimpy portion for $3.99/basket and they charged us an additional $3.99 for a second order. Went to Mantra for Mothers Day as mom wanted to eat somewhere we had not been before. Tried to make reservations to this place but was informed they don't take any. Since we were coming from Fremont, we tried to leave early to beat out the crowd. We arrived at 7:45pm and got a table for 5 right away! It looked like our table was reserved as we had a note on our table but seemed like they cancelled. That was sort of weird since the person on the phone said they were not taking any. Service was spectacular though as we never went without water and our questions were always answered. We ordered the Dal Tadka, Malai Kofta, Truffled Chicken Tikka, Garlic Naan, and Mango Lassi. Hey guys, they are trurly best Indian buffet in this area. I got here around 11:30 for lunch buffet, there was plenty of seats but then after 10-20mins restaurant got so busy. Be aware of that. The food part, it is awesome. A lot of selection include Tandoori Chicken, Butter Chicken, Samosa which Is kinda rare to have all of them with this price. I am indian food lover and been to so many restaurants and even cook some myself. I wouldn't say curry flavor was the best. But it was good enough. I really liked thier chickens. .it was moist and juicy even tho it was buffet. Definitely samosa is a huge point. Wish they had spicy pickles. Or some spicy curry. Staffs were nice and polite. Love love love their buffet! Been there both times, first during normal dinner hours and then the second time came back for their buffet. I highly recommend going during the buffet! Atmosphere: Super cute and traditional indian designs embedded throughout the restaurant. Clean and organized! Food: DEE-LISH! The buffet has so much variety. Usually with indian restaurants, I get nervous that the buffet will either be all meats or all veggies but Mantra has the perfect balance of the two. They also organized everything so well, with appetizers and sides nicely separated from the main entrees. I tried a little bit of mostly everything from the pav bhaji to the chicken curries. They bring a fresh basket of naan to the table as you need it and yelp check-in gets you a free mango lassi (WOO!). Service: Perfect! Especially during buffet hours, they were mcspeedy and kept an eye on our table and filled water/naan as needed. Didn't have to flag anyone down for service (during dinner, that sort of happened but no biggie, they were super busy!). Not a fan. To be honest, food is 3 stars, but service is not very good so I took it down to a 2. For Indian food I would recommend checking out Sakoon down the street instead which is better. The place that was at Flight was also actually pretty good as well. Disappointed it's gone now. Great India in Santa Clara and Amber in SF destroy this place though, not even in the same universe as those restaurants. Anyway, was very disappointed at the service. Not only do servers routinely bump into you and even my kids, but I asked for the check and the waiter was like "Ok no problem" and never came back. Apparently you just pay at the door which he could have told me. In conclusion, not terrible but for the price and service at least the food should be a lot better. read more
