As the business goes, good or bad, I am sure the consumer would have been contacted but still no reply whatsoever to the email that I have sent asking for explanation on what happened when my son was there for what happened below. Still waiting. Posted the review yesterday and emailed a couple of times to the office, but no reply with an explanation of what happened. As the reviews posted by other patients, this has happened many times before and clearly, the charges aren't being disclosed upfront and if disclosed, not clearly. It is amazing to me that a business can continue to practice in this manner after repeated compaints.. My son just left their office for contact eye exam and was charged ridiculous fee of $500.00 and I was told that this is with "20%" off their regular price. I called office and talked to a lady named Kris who told me that is how much they charge and she told my son that "before" the exam which my son said he wasn't told until afterwards. Regardless, $500.00 for a routine contact eye exam? Am I the only one that thinks this is a highway robbery? My entire family has been wearing glasses and contact lens and have never seen anything like this. The only reason I went to this place was because of time sensitivily but wow.. The only reason for the 2 is that I was able to setup an appointment and get an exam. That was fine. My problems with them started after my appointment. Here are a couple highlights. They stated they would submit my vision results to the MVA in Maryland as part of a Vision Provider service. They charged me $25, and later called to inform me they can't do it online. They offered to email it to me or have me pick it up, but that required I setup an appointment through the MVA (due to COVID) to drop it off. That defeated the whole purpose, and the MVA only had appointments a couple months out. Thankfully, my insurance renews in the new year, and I was able to get an appointment with another vision provider. They did NOT charge me to submit the info, and they did it within a half hour of my appointment. Also, on one of the multiple occasions I called to speak to them about this, a guy answered the phone. I hear him say, "well I guess I'm not getting to go to lunch." He then says, "hello." I waited, as that's not how you answer a phone at work. He caught himself, then said it was Maple Lawn Care. Once he heard who I needed to speak with, he put me on hold like the phone was on fire. read more

I just had a very positive experience at Maple Lawn Eye Care Center. I have been coming here for the past 8 years and I continue to feel that I am getting top notch service from very qualified personnel. Friendly, calm, efficient. My eyes are changing and Dr. Ely gave me a sophisticated and thorough examination, and then explained--in details that I could understand--what is going on. I visited this location for an eye exam and Dr. Ely was incredibly rude and unhelpful. During the examination, I asked an innocuous question about the procedure, and she dismissed my question and told me to wait until the end of the exam. She ended up shuffling me to the payment center and never actually explained what was done during the exam. I will not visit this office again. read more

I would NOT recommend this office. Dr. Ely and the Optician Tech are very condescending, abrasive, and rude. I have been going to eye doctors for the last 20 years and this office is by far the worst experience I have ever had in terms of interacting with the doctor and the staff. I have gone to Maple Lawn Eye Care for over 2 years and each time I have been treated badly: talked down to, scolded, and it felt like they were bullying me to buy their frames and have unnecessary images taken of my eyes. Doctor Ely (and the woman who "helps" you buy the frames) are both very condescending, abrasive, and disproportionately motivated by making the most money. In addition, the prices for contact lens exams are outrageous ($250-$550+) and they don't tell you up front what the cost is exactly until after your appointment. To be fair, while I had to put up with Dr. Ely's snarky remarks and mean tone, she did seem to spend more time on the exam then say at a Vision Works place. Also, the woman with the blonde hair who answers the phone and the man who adjusts your frames were both very kind, and made the visits palpable. read more

I became a patient of Dr JacalynEly atMaple Lawn Eye Care a month after suffering a stroke which resulted in partial vision loss. Dr Ely and her staff immediately took stock of my situation and secured and optimized my remaining sight. I've since had two vision field studies performed at Maple Lawn Eye Care and have purchased two pairs of glasses with updated prescriptions. Dr Ely's partner, Dr Sanford Cohen, is putting me through weekly vision therapy at his office in Silver Spring. Today's vision field updated study shows vision improvement. Very encouraging ! Vision loss of any kind is tough to take. But Drs Ely, Cohen and staff have settled me down and charted a course to recovery. And I'm very pleased with both new pairs of glasses. read more

Unfortunately the service has greatly declined after the move. I switched my insurance and the have my insurance listed on their website site. I drove all the way there for my annual appointment and they wanted me to pay a couple of hundred dollars because they apparently pick and choose what they will bill for a provider.i refused to pay that amount upfront and I was told we can't do your appointment. These greedy people then billed me for a missed appointment. I fought it but unless I want to sue them in court . I have to find my own satisfaction. I paid because these nasty people threatened my credit . I consider them extremely low with no customer service, greedy and bullying. Awful company. I went for an eye exam in February and was not told about extra COVID cleaning related fees. Seeing extra charges on my bill was not cool. I called neighboring eye care centers and they were not charging this fee. Then I went to use the DMV service where the eye doctor can submit your latest eye information. When I first called the office they lied to me. I found this out after spending 30 minutes on the phone with the DMV and calling the eye care center back. Then I was told that if I did want to use this service it would cost another fee even though the DMV portion is free and does not cost the eye center. This center is a scam and trying to suck every penny from you. I would NEVER EVER go back. Also I live in Columbia, MD. I don't know why this is tagging me as somewhere else. read more

I've been going here for over 10 years, back when they were in Burtonsville. I agree, ever since they moved, customer service is very lacking. I gave 2 stars for the doctors, but it took the desk staff 2 months(!) to email my my prescription due to 1. forgetting, 2. putting the note on the wrong member folder, 3. wrong year's prescription. And I agree the senior staff t definitely have attitude. But due to them not having my insurance, I've never bought contacts or glasses through them, just pay to get them exam done. read more

6/26/2019 - I went to Maple Lawn Eye Care Center to see if they had any new frames. I've been going to this establishment for years because they use to have another buyer a few years ago that bought stylish one of a kind frames who is no longer there. However, every now and then they may have a couple so I stop in to see if anything new comes in. I love stylish but different frames. So, on the 26th I did pickout a frame and schedule to have a eye exam because my vision had changed dramatically within the last 9 months since my previous exam and new frames at the same establishment. There is a guy that assist me with the frames, measurements and fitting when your glasses comes in. He scheduled me for an appointment for the next day the 27th at 10:30am. He scheduled me with a doctor I wasn't familiar with and I told him that's not whom I've been seeing. He said that's the person in my chart. I went to the appointment the next day and never saw this doctor before. She prescribed me with a whole other prescription as she stated I had cataracts. When I went to pay for my frames, I wanted the new prescription in the new frames and my current frames. He told me that they needed my current frames to order the new prescription. I trusted this establishment, again I've been going to them for years as well as my two sisters and nieces. I told them I couldn't see without my current frames so I will pay for the new frames and new prescription as well as the prescription for my current frames up front so when I pick up my new frames next week, I can drop my current frames off with them to order the new script in them hassle free and a quick in and out. They said that was fine. At that time, my current frames were only 9 months old and I paid a lot for them from the same establishment. Keep in mind they stated I had to leave my frames with them so they can order the prescription for them. They said my new frame and prescription should be in by July 5th. On July 3rd, I went out for lunch with a friend/colleague Dianna Nardella and somehow lost my current frame. I didn't realize my frames were missing until the next morning. Text my friend to see if it was in her car and she said no. I immediately starting calling the two restaurant we went to whom after days of checking with other staff couldn't located them. I even called Harris Teeter when my car was parked to see if anyone may have turned them in...no luck there either. July 9th I went to pick up my new frames and the same guy said your suppose to drop off your current frames so they can order my new prescription. I told him I had some bad news...I lost my current frames and needed to get a refunded. He said okay and I said but I do have one other place I needed to check before the refund as I was going to head to them next because I was still hoping I could find them. I then also saw the doctor that has been my optician for the past few years and realized he lied to me as well. He said okay, just call and let him know. I checked Squisito Pizza and the same guys that were assisting me in my order were there. They said I had on my sunglasses when I walked in, which is what I thought. July 10th, I then called Maple Lawn and the guy answered the phone, I told him I needed to get the refund because I tried but with no luck. He said the person who handles that is out for lunch and for me to leave a message. They never called me back for hours, I then called and she stuttered on the phone and said my lense where there. I said how is that possible when you guys all said I needed to drop off the frames. I spoke to Noni, office manager who then said I couldn't get my money back. She then put the guy back on the phone and he told my it was my fault for paying for something in advance and I couldn't get my money back. I asked him how do you keep almost $500 of someone's money with no merchandise given and when you couldn't order the prescription w/o the frames. This guy argued with me about not refunding my money and consistently said it was my fault for paying in advance and he will not refund me my money. I've filed a complaint with BBB and going to file a case in court. I've never experience such awful business practice in my life as well as never heard of an establishment with holding your funds without furnishing the merchandise. SO DISAPPOINTED AFTER BEING A LOYAL CUSTOMER! read more

This practice has gone down slowly but surely since last 13 years my family have been witnessed. I am reading lot of reviews with common complains as mine means it's real. They certainly charge for extra services which they started performing without consulting upfront in last 3-4 years for sure. Covid cleaning charges of $6.50 are supposed to be charge when you are really cleaning after every patient. I am sitting there looking at the rounds of patient including myself where they are not even cleaning overall surface except the eye lenses machine area where your face is chin down. Cleaning up that basic after each visit is not covid that's in general common practice of all an eye doctors I have known. This practice is charging and adding up to lot $$ without offering even little back. When I asked for clarity afterwards for additional services staff shut me off by saying well it's good for you anyways. When telling staff that I didn't see any wiping/disinfecting happening she acted like I said something which means nothing to them and ask for payment instead of trying to take it as a feedback. My husband has found another eye doc and I will be following him soon as well since Mr. Mirza is also no longer there for us to be around and worry about all of above listed concerns. read more

I can't say enough good stuff about this place. Dr. Ely's exam was very thorough. She took her time to figure out my Rx, and now I can see 20/20! Ovi, who will forever be known as the "eye whisperer," picked a pair of regular and sunglasses out within moments of meeting me, and I said "yes" to both. I won't be here when the sunglasses get in, so they are shipping them to my hotel in Hawaii. They put a rush on my regular glasses so they would get back before I leave. I love it when I find a place of business where the people and process are efficient, thoughtful, friendly, and laid back. read more

Where do I begin: 1. Dr. Ely was over an hour late (I get it, stuff happens, but subsequently she was extremely rushed with my daughter and I.) 2. She told me that I had some minor corneal damage as a result of my overuse of contacts, but "I won't discuss it with you because you didn't come here for a contact exam, only a vision exam." Umm... unethical? Un-Hippocratic? 3. She told me that she didn't want me as a contact customer because "I was non-compliant". I've been wearing contacts for a long, long time, and no O.D. has ever told me anything remotely resembling that. 3. She performed a probe-based intraocular pressure exam, despite the fact that- I asked, because I hate the probe- the desk told me it was the air-puff test. 4. I (supposedly) require dialation and additional testing, so she refused to issue a prescription for me. 5. However, she wouldn't issue a prescription for my daughter, either-who does not require additional testing. 6. She kept trying to push me into progressive bifocal glasses. My response: "Hey, the single-vision ones I have are fine, I wear contacts 99% of the time!" She didn't like that much. 7. She suggested hard corrective nighttime contacts or progressives for my daughter- I have the paperwork- who needs roughly -1.0, which is dollar store correction. OMGWTFBBQ? She's 7! Contacts?? Are you kidding? Money grubber. 8. There was a screensaver on the receptionist's computer- "I GOT MY EYEGLASSES FROM CHINA AND THEY DONT WORK RIGHT- NOW I BLAME MY EYE DOCTOR" Oh. No prescription for you, despite the fact that it's required by the FTC: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0116-prescription-glasses-and-contact-lenses I'm an educated person- corrective lenses ain't fuckin' rocket science, people. The short grey haired receptionist is one of the most rude people i have ever encountered. I overheard her tell a patient on the phone that she does not have time to give them directions to the facility in an incredibly rude manner but yet she was on facebook. She asked another patient to hold and then said "like you have a choice". The new receptionist (very kind and friendly) asked her to examine my glasses and she stated she will get to it when she wants to. The doctor was fine but i will not return to this practice as I feel uncomfortable with the staff. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Ely for about 4 years. I've found her to be very personable, knowledgeable, and helpful. I have been a glaucoma suspect for years. Since the pressure in my eyes has been high the last couple of times, she took the time to do an extra test to make sure my eyes are safe and healthy. When my daughter's eye was scratched and uncomfortable, I was able to call her at home. Dr. Cohen even met us at the office on Sunday to help my daughter. He was wonderful. I highly recommend these doctors! read more

I am writing this review NOT about the Doctor but the staff. The Doctors are wonderful, friendly, knowledgeable and caring. The staff however is rude, nonchalant and doesn't do their job properly. The staff didn't call and find out about my Insurance properly and therefore i was left with $600 worth of bills that I wouldn't have if they called and got my eligibility of benefits correctly. They did not. I was told I only had to pay a $20 co-pay and then I get sent two $300 bills for glasses. One for my husband and One for me because they billed my Insurance a few months too early as we can only get glasses every two years per our Insurance. When they called us in for an Eye Exam, we asked them were we eligible for glasses again and they told us yes which was incorrect. They did not check with the insurance to make sure like they are supposed to do. Had they done it correctly, we would not have been told to only pay $20.00 as Doctor's want their money in full from the patient prior to departure to ensure that they are paid in full and in a timely manner by both the patient and the insurance. I make sure the provider is in my network, which is what i did. They did not ensure for the doctors sake that they would be paid in full by the insurance company. When i go to other doctors and request a service, they will let me know what insurance will and won't pay for because that is their job to know. Doctor's want to get paid for the service they provide, it's the staffs job to make sure that they do.Now I have to find me a new eye doctor because of the less than stellar staff she has working for her. Be AWARE of this before you choose this eye care center: I had used them for many years and love the optometrist, but the manager was condescending when I requested a frame exchange due to poor quality (the frame broke when the tech was adjusting it for me, it was not good quality). It was THEN that I learned of their return policy: NO RETURNS EVER, AND THE CUSTOMER PAYS FOR EXCHANGES IN FULL. I never received my eyeglass prescription, even after a written request through the USPS (to prove it with return-receipt). It has been over 4 months, and I have since moved and I informed them of this, but I have still not received the original glasses or my prescription and am forced to go to another eyecare facility and pay for new glasses AGAIN. They also neither posted nor gave me a written copy of their return policy before I paid for glasses. Both the prescription and return policy are required by the Federal Trade Commission. I was forced to make a formal complaint through the FTC. I also submitted one to the BBB. People need to be aware of this before they make the choice to use Maple Lawn Eye Care. read more

Just an all around terrible experience. My wife and I received regular eye exams, which were covered by our insurance, and then given extra treatment (we never inquired about this) that wasn't covered by our insurance. The retina photos were 48 dollars. The contact lens exam was 185 dollars. Sadly, we were never informed by anyone that we would be paying out of pocket for these. The doctor just simply took us into the room and then footed us a 250 dollar bill. When I asked about the charges their response was "our insurance doesn't cover this". And when I asked why were we not informed of the out of pocket costs their response was "we have a sign in our lobby that says so". I also lost a pair of glasses and called in for my prescription and they wanted fifty dollars to release that information. Be prepared to be nickel and dimed by these sleezy salesman. read more

Highly recommend this practice. I've been a patient here for over 20 years - from annual exams to emergency care - the doctors have always taken care of me and my family. Dr. Ely helped my mother with low vision issues with a tremendous amount of quality care. Dr. Cohen has worked closely with my children doing vision therapy and offering solutions for their myopia. I've had various issues myself between allergies and optical migraines - and they've always been able to get to the root of the issue and find a solution. Above all, they're dedicated to their patients -- and they're even open on Saturdays! How convenient is that? read more

My whole family comes here. We absolutely love the staff, especially Dr Mirza! My daughter has been complaining of her eyes and we took her somewhere else. They told me her eyes were fine. As she was still complaining I took her here for a second opinion and she did in fact need glasses. Her grades have significant come up since getting glasses. The same place I originally took my daughter to I inquired about an eye exam for my autistic son. They told me they would have to hold him down and dilate his eyes. NO WAY! I took him to Dr Mirza and she was AMAZING with him. No dilation or holding him down. They made him feel comfortable and worked at his own pace! The staff took their time helping my daughter pick out the perfect frames and they were in 2 days before they said they would be! I love them all!!! Not all of the staff was perfect but a woman named Noni helped me pick new frames that I never would have tried and I love them (she is also great at adjusting them). In a new and much more pleasant location, Maple Lawn Eye Care Center, formerly Burtonsville Eye Care Center, is as comfortable a place to come for eye care as it always was. The staff is very caring, attentive, and accommodating, all products for eye care are available, frame selection is plentiful, and it really is a great find for eye care. Dr. Fawziya Mirza is very professional, thorough, and knowledgeable in all matters concerning the eyes. All the staff work together to create a great office team. read more

This place failed on client satisfaction. Yes, their selection of frames are wide to include brand names but of course expensive but the way they handled my situation is unacceptable. The glasses did not come out right. Even when I tried it on for several days, it did not work. I felt like wearing no glasses is better than wearing theirs. They said they have tried their best to make it work, but actually what they did was sent it back to the lab and changed the prescription. That did not work either. I was given the option to convert it to reading glasses and I agreed as I was given no other option and was told that it would take another 5 days for the glasses to come back. After two weeks of no phone calls from them, I decided to call back to follow up and find out that they have not done anything else with it and I have to pay again if they send it back to the lab. What is even worse is deny that they have spoken to me to confirm the change. I refused to pay again since I and the insurance company already paid over a thousand dollars for this glasses. Paying for something again that was not delivered satisfactorily in the beginning is fraud. Costco is even better than them. This eye center is keeping my glasses that I paid and who knows they may sell it again and make money out of it. Unless they change the way they do business, I am not recommending this place. read more
