This is exactly what a southern dive bar should be. The bartender was proficiently serving drinks in between puffs of her cigarette, the drinks were cheap, they let dogs come in and chill, and the decor was dark, damp, and exactly the kind of place you want to go for a drink and some live jams when in the Big Easy. read more

Divey, loud, college crowd. Booze is decently priced and the bands are generally good. The stage is small though and not what I expected for such a legendary place. There is a pretty large bar and patio area but you're not in sight of the band. Sometimes this is good though because it can get really loud in there. Though it's not a place I choose to hang out in often, I do recommend it to tourists since it's off the beaten path of the French Quarter. read more

Glad that a friend recommended the Maple Leaf Bar and thanks to the bar itself for being open and still having a band on Christmas night. After having an underwhelming dinner at Cafe Adelaide (again, most places weren't open on Christmas), we took a cab over to Oak and Dante. We would have waited for the streetcar, but it was HELLA windy on top of being cold! In any case, after coaching our taxicab driver on how to get there, we arrived to a less than full bar clearly populated with nearly all regulars who knew the bartender and others drinking. We enjoyed many $4 NOLA Blondes and a Hopitoulus each in the standard NOLA plastic cups. (I understand the business model of the to go cup, but I am also somewhat disturbed by the cost and environmental impact of using so many plastic cups. My husband and I decided that since people seem a little more lax about the health code that people should bring their own plastic cups/mugs from home to carry to the bars.) In any case, we thoroughly enjoyed hanging at the bar, people watching and drinking (smoking, oops), especially once 101 Runners started playing in the other (standing room only) room. 101 Runners had a 7 piece band and played what I assume are pretty traditional sounding NOLA songs that were feet tapping pace. (They call themselves Mardi Gras Indian Funk and are one of the several regular bands that play at the Maple Leaf.) The place was by no means all full, but there was a sizable crowd for the holiday. Even with the $10 cover once the band started playing, I'm not sure how local regular bands make a living. We sure enjoyed ourselves and loved the music. Only complaint, no soap in the ladies room upon first visit. If I'm back in NOLA, I will be here again and hopefully, we'll make it to Frenchmen street--my husband's stomach was too upset to go out the next night (Bar Tonique in the FQ and d.b.a. on Frenchmen Street were supposed to be on tap thanks to Josh the bartender at the Delachaise in Uptown. Great bar, annoying college crowd for the rebirth show.

Great divey spot to catch amazing music. We swung in there after eating at Jacquemoes and quickly made friends with one of the crazy regulars. Turned into some musicians jam session with the drummer from Neville brothers and soem famous Ike Stubblesomething. Super friendly vibe and cheap booze. What more could you ask for? read more

While in town recently for Tales of the Cocktail I had the good fortune to be taken here by a local bartender and it was great. We went on a Sunday night and there was a live band on til about midnight and some leftover free food outside from an earlier bbq. There's an outdoor patio and a pool table but the main area is dominated by the music area, which is a longish, narrow hall. The band was playing this amazing New Orleans-style upbeat swing or jazz that so permeates the city and I love it. Drinks were ridiculously cheap versus San Francisco prices. I would best describe this place as maybe a slightly nicer El Rio but overall a dive music bar. Wished I could've been there for the Tuesday night that everyone on here keeps going on about. A little ways away from the French Quarter but absolutely worth it!! read more

Saw the Rebirth Brass Band on New Years Eve, 2005. Admission included an open jambalaya buffett, which was outstanding.

Please don't be scared to venture out of the "tourist zone". We did and we are the better for it. This is the kind of venue that makes a city special. It's in a quiet neighborhood where mostly locals hang, it's a little divey but down home and the music the night we were there was rockin. In the summer it's suffocating inside and outside on the patio you're likely to develop a case of swamp rot (I did) but it was worth it. The beers will keep you cool. read more

Ok, so the bar is tight, crowded, and hot. But when the music is good, who cares? I caught the Rebirth Brass Band here last Tuesday. The band (which has at least nine members) went all out and I had a great time. Started late and had an extended break, so made for a long night. Cover on the pricey side at fifteen dollars, but enjoyed the show. If you don't have a car, you can pretty readily find a taxi in the area. There are some interesting restaurants and bars near the Maple Leaf as well. read more

A group of us went to see Rebirth Brass Band. We were all visiting from out of town and apparently this was a spot that had to be checked out. $15 cover per person! Yikes. Small space over all. Reminded me of the bars back in college. Kind of worn down, but full of character. Cheap drinks, but everything is cheap to me since i'm from LA. I'm a bit of a claustrophobe. This place gets crowded. Drinks are spilled on you, people bump into you. You have to come here with that in mind and just have a good time. When the band started to play, my friends went wild, dancing full out for hours. People gathered around to watch and join in. It was a great sweaty night. There is an additional bar in the back. Great night out. Enjoy friends and music and just get hammered. P.S. My favorite part was an artist of to the side drawing the band as they were playing. By the end of the set he had rendered an incredible pieced of art! #NOLA people...! read more

Was Looking forward to seeing band. Wife got sick. Was in for 10 minutes. Had quick $50 bar tab. Paid for 4 people $80. Had to leave and they would give no refund. No rebirth here. Pretty weak. The venue itself isn't anything more than a dive bar. The floors are gross, don't look down. The drinks are standard, with reasonable prices. The reason to go to Maple Leaf is for the music: FANTASTIC. Shows start late, and there isn't much else to do on this street, so if you're going for music, wait until 10 pm. read more

Can't say enough good things about this place. Friendly crowd, some of the best music I've ever heard, and $3 Miller High Life. You'll want to balk at the cover ($10 when I went), but don't. I was disappointed. This place did not feel as "genuine" and "local" as most reviews here claimed. Probably this place and band (Rebirth, Tuesday night) are too well known for their own good. No dancing, people just stood and stared. I saw Soul Rebels at Le Bon Temps Roule a few months ago, and that was a lot better. 15 $ cover for this was too much. read more

I've heard about this place and I've been trying to get here from Atlanta for six months! Great time on Sunday night! I got my hands into the crawfish boil! This place has a terrible vibe. The moment we walked in we were accosted by the bartender who was changing shifts to pay cash- happy to do so but no need for the aggression. The next bartender seemed like tending bar was the single most dreaded task of his life. After buying drinks we were then accosted for a THIRD time by the door guy- apparently it was not only shift change but a new band was coming on and we had to pay a cover or leave. Again- happy to pay a cover- just not to a place that treats me like shit. We were given a plastic cup for our remaining beer and told the great thing about New Orleans is that booze can be transported. This place was an utter disappointment- filled with utterly egotistical staff and a seriously downer vibe. read more

God, I'm hot. I almost forgot how hot it gets down here. My chest is humming. This is my night. I'm a million bucks. I feel it. This is my night. I love Oak Street. More people go to Frenchman, the Quarter, and Magazine, they may want to go to House of Blues, One Eyed Jack's, DBA, but I like the intimacy of this place. It's been almost a year since I moved from here. I love Oak Street. It's one of the few famous named streets in New Orleans that still feels like it serves its original function, a little main street. You can get a good cup of coffee at a few places, a haircut, a hot breakfast, do some yoga, get your shoes cobbled, and snag a gelato or ice cream. Man, there's even a hardware store. Maybe you know that painting, the one at the beginning of "Good Times"? The juke joint? Where people with tired bones and hard lives writhe and move to a house band to forget how broke they are and their own godawful sad story. It maybe making rent or nowadays trying to make something outta yourself at some university. This is one of the few times I've gotten close to the juke joint. Who cares if it's full of hip white kids. I'm ok with it and I get the same feel. There is an antique ceiling, wooden walls with giant pylons that cut up the crowd. Outside are old men hawking barbecue, and I have to say as a Texan I'm impressed. Man those brats look good. A million bucks. Man, I'm a million bucks walking down the street. In an unassuming building on Oak Street next to the fantastic Jaque-imo's sits the Maple Leaf. The Maple Leaf is Rebirth's Tuesday home, and guess what? It deserves it. It's a shack of a building that gives play to some of New Orlean's best music in a neighborhood that is primarily residential and on a street that is what main streets used to be. A street that's your barber, your cobbler, your diner, your department store. The Maple Leaf is your saloon and your dance hall in one. It's here to serve the community and not some hipster reproduction of one. Some nights there is a cover (about 12-15 bucks), but it's expected at a good live music joint. I've never not had a good time. I got introduced to the Maple Leaf through a buddy of mine. "Hey C, it's D! You got to come to this place man, it's off the roof." I promptly ditched the people I was with at a much posher bar where people with all manner of m.d. , j.d., and ph.D behind their names posed for one another's digital camera. Heh, the alphabet soup of a new kind of slavery, and I jet to one of the best nights of my life. This place is a great old building that squeezes in tons of kids to listen to some of New Orlean's traditional jazz, many great live acts play here close enough to kiss the audience on a small stage. It's hot in here, sweaty, bodies writhe. It's sexual but not perverted. More sensual. A little white thing starts feeling the music and not even thinking about it, we clear a space for her to let her soul out on the floor. That's that. A release, bodies having a good time. A few guys trying to pick up on girls, but no one pays them no mind. I feel it. I'm a million bucks, man. This night is a beating heart. And I'm a million bucks looking for a place to spend myself. read more
