We have been buying donuts from Maple Leaf Donuts for over 20 years, though we stopped going there several years ago as our children grew older. Now that we have a grandson, we have an excuse to start buying donuts from there again. We were very pleased that the same freshness and quality is reflected in the donuts they make today, with much the same offerings. My favorite is the chocolate-glazed donut, though if you are visiting for the first time, I recommend starting with a regular glazed donut, which is, in my opinion, the best way to judge a donut establishment's freshness and quality. In any case, it is fortunate that we are buying donuts from Maple Leaf Donuts. And, one other thing hasn't changed, which other review mention: Mary, the owner who greets customers with a big smile, always manages to toss in two or three donut holes, even when buying one or two donuts. The doughnuts here are fresh and delicious, with a wide variety always available, not just in the early morning. The prices are so low that it worries me sometimes. The proprietress always sneaks some doughnut holes into the bag too. Whenever I crave a real doughnut (not some store-bought or Dunkin fare) I come straight here. There's two types of donut eaters...those who eat them occasionally at work, school, or for a special event, and those who genuinely love donuts. I'm in the latter and so I'm sort of a donut snob. That being said, when I try a new donut store I usually get a few standards that way I can compare equally between shops. These included jelly filled, maple bar (or ring), apple fritter, and cinnamon roll as well as a few miscellaneous ones. Let's start with the good. The apple fritter and old fashioned maple were pretty good. Average or above average. Now the bad. The jelly filled (lemon and raspberry) were inedible. The filling tasted like dollar-store pie filling. My son, who loves jelly donuts, wouldn't even eat the raspberry one. I tried it as well and it was gross. Before I continue, most people probably wouldn't have problem with some of these donuts, but again there's two types of donut eaters. Now, onto the maple ring. It was below average. The icing was thing and the maple flavor weak. I know this review goes against the majority view and high rating, and I don't mean to be pretentious, but hopefully other donut snobs can get a different opinion on this store and maybe try somewhere else. I feel a lot of donut shops in San Jose use cheap ingredients, never do anything inventive, and this shop is no different. I will pay more for a better donut. If you want to see what I think a phenomenal donut is (haven't found a place yet in San Jose). Look at Surfside donuts in Pismo Beach, CA and SLODoCo in San Luis Obispo, CA. Let me tell you what a wonderful place this is I had all my grandsons home sick all 5 of them I asked them what they wanted for breakfast and they all wanted donuts . My husband & I have been visiting here for several years, & the service AND the quality are consistently good. :-) They have all of our fave donut types, and I've even learned to like some new types thanks to their selection. I order door dash from here maybe 3 times a week because the Vietnamese coffee paired with some donut holes OR the cinnamon roll is just the absolute best way to start the morning :) This one time they ran out of one of the donuts I ordered and I quickly got a call from a lady from their shop and based off of that short call, I was even more sold to loving this place because she was the sweetest person ever! and really talked to you as if you were her family :) She threw in extra donut holes in my order and gave me any different donut of my choosing.
