I am originally from this area (born in the Aliquippa Hospital that no longer exists); I spent my early childhood in Aliquippa and Hopewell--tons of family in Ambridge. Love this place!! Servers are friendly. I usually get the chicken Philly sandwich with coleslaw as my side. They have THE BEST coleslaw (mayo based) . Always fresh - huge portion size- and they sometimes run out. I also like the burger with egg and cheese on it. Everything I have tried was delicious and I keep going back. Maybe if I had grown up going to this restaurant it would have been a real hit for me...the restaurant was filled with people who seemed like they had been around the block a time or two and frequent Maple Restaurant. They LOVE it there, which makes my heart happy! I love to see people out enjoying food they love. I personally didn't think the food was special at all, including the famous hot beef. The hamburger I got wasn't too exciting either. Maybe it's just not my kind of food though? It's very much so traditional old style home cooking, and for some, that is the perfect meal. The service was wonderful and they were very accommodating to our one year old who was having the time of his life enjoying a little side of applesauce. I keep going back and forth between 3 and 4 stars. For me, a 4 star restaurant has amazing food and great service, but I settled on a 3 because only one of those was present. The Maple Restaurant is definitely a local favorite, and it is obvious when you enter and the place is full. They are well-staffed with friendly servers and quick service. My last visit, which was the day of writing this review, was a Saturday evening and we watched customers fill every table. We came at just the right time before the rush. The restaurant itself is clean and spacious. My mom has taken me to the Maple for years and it has looked practically the same other than maybe the light on the walls at the booths and little things like that, and I see that as a good thing. I like consistency and Maple has been a consistently great place for us and it is highly nostalgic for me. I most recently ordered the Special Turkey Dinner with mashed potatoes, stuffing inside, roast turkey all covered in their yellow gravy. It also came with a little cup of cranberry sauce and a second side and I picked a nicely cooked vegetable medley with carrots, green beans, and corn. Everything was delightful. The turkey dinner was actually a meal I heard was good and saw online and had wanted to try for a long while. I also get their fish sandwich a lot. It is a huge filet of fish, too. I live near the water and nobody serves as solid of a fish sandwich for such a fair price near me. That does not make sense to me. Before he passed away, I have memories of getting the large fish sandwich, eating half of it in the restaurant, then he would steal my leftovers. The hot roast beef sandwich is a classic. I sampled some from a diner at my table and it is as spectacular as can be. No restaurants near me in Virginia serve anything even close to it, either. I said to my husband - "this is my soul food." I grew up eating at Maple Restaurant very often, nearly once a week for at least one meal, from breakfast to lunch to dinner. Coming back as an adult is like a trip through time - it hasn't changed a bit in the 20+ years since I had my first hot beef. They have their own parking lot, but we usually would park on the street where there is also free parking. The staff is always kind and welcoming, getting you seated right away. When I was a kid, the front of the restaurant was for smoking-only, so getting seated there now felt like I was in an exclusive club. The walls are still plastered with photos of family and all of the accolades the Pappas family has received. On to the best part - the food! Everything is delicious, honestly. It's like going to grandma's house - big portions, lots of butter, but oh so delicious. I will always wonder how to make their incredible brown gravy (which I used to eat straight out of the bowl and would do now as well if I wasn't so aware of social cues.) My husband loves the Reuben and I also like coming when they have their tasty turkey gravy on Saturdays. If you want a diner-style meal that'll fill up your stomach and your soul, this is the place to visit. read more

We weren't sure what to expect as we drove to Maple Restaurant this afternoon but once we arrived we got a good feel for what a well-loved neighborhood establishment this is. Maple Restaurant has been here since the 1960's and has been operated by the same family for three generations. When we walked in we were quickly seated and go to take in a lot of the memorabilia on the walls. It's a fun and cozy environment where we got the sense that most all the patrons were local as several people were greeting each other by name even. My wife ordered one of the burgers with a side salad and I got the classic hot beef sandwich with fries smothered in gravy. The wait was not terribly long which was nice considering how hungry we were, and our server was attentive to filling our drinks. Once the food arrived it was time to dig in and the hot beef sandwich was nice! Loaded with meat and a heaping pile of fries--it was very filling! The burger was also a nice size but my wife complained of a couple pretty gristly bites that were a little unpleasant. Either way, food was plentiful, prices were fair, and service was friendly. I always get the same thing when I come here (and I've been visiting here since I was a kid)--a hamburger, french fries and a side of gravy. The burgers are huge and the fries are generous. The gravy is the best brown gravy I've ever had and they make the fries taste even better (if that was even possible). When out of town relatives would come up from Florida or Ohio, I remember as a kid we'd come here. It was convenient and close by. We also knew the family who owns it having gone to church with the kids of the family (one of which who now owns it). It's a nostalgic place (for me) to have a bite. read more

I vividly remember this place from my childhood (the 70's) and remember the hot beef sandwiches, hot turkey sandwiches, fish sandwiches, and of course, the French fries covered in gravy! Let's just say that in 40 years, this place hasn't changed a bit. LOL. Still the same as I remember it, and the food was just as good. Even at 930am, the Hot Beef Sandwich was as good as I remember! Definitely worth stopping in for a blast from the past family owned restaurant. As for the rest of Ambridge, a drive down Merchant St was rather disappointing, as hardly anything was recognized from years past. About a month ago i ordered a mushroom cheesesteak for my dying grandmother. I ordered extra mushrooms for her on the cheesesteak. I was told the extra mushrooms were 6 extra dollars. She didn't tell me that on the phone so I brought the exact Change and could no longer buy thr cheesesteak. The front lady that was about my age which is 27 said that I would have to pay for it since it was made and I told her that I didn't have the exact change and she told me never to come back. I'm upset how I got treated. She was super disrespectful and when I asked to speak to the manager she told me to leave. I would never ever recommend this place to anyone. I had every intention of posting a pic of my dinner at the Maple, but alas, the second that the waitress placed my Hot Roast Beef sandwich and fries all covered with delicious gravy in front of me, I dug in! This sandwich is nothing special, its bread and roast beef,...but that gravy!!!!! This is the kind of thing that you need on a cold day in January. The gravy is soul food. The diner is nice, unchanged over several decades yet clean and bright. The staff is nice as well. From our waitress to the cashier to the bus boys, we received several smiles. The locals though shot a lot of stink eyes my way since this was the first time my family and I had been there. Got the feeling that this is a big local hangout and that if you are not a local you are instantly judged and sized up when you get through the door. The rest of the menu looks good and from what I could see from some of the plates leaving the kitchen to be delivered, the food as a whole looks good. But both my wife and I stuck with the Hot Roast Beef sandwich and we both loved it. I am almost afraid that every time I go back that I will be unable to order anything different as I now know how amazing that sandwich is. We went to the Maple Restaurant and were very disappointed. The Maple was always a good place to get a decent meal at a decent price. Been around for decades with loyal customers. I realize supply chain issues are causing prices to increase but no excuse for serving low quality food. We paid $75 for a family of 4 to have subpar meals. One example, they changed their fries, which used to be so tasty. The waitress said they were having a hard time getting the normal fries, so they tried a few different kinds and settled on what they have now. They're beyond bland. No crispy outside, soft on the inside fries that I was craving. None of us liked our food. including their "famous" hot roast beef. We all said we probably will not go back again. read more
