I haven't left a review for here in 9yrs. We've been coming here since 1986, and so much has changed and so much hasn't. Menu is almost the same but the quality of food has slipped for us in the last year. Tonight's dinner was a stuffed lobster tail husband had stuffed shrimp. Great sized tail with a Good amount of crab. They broiled the tail first and severely overcooked it, it was very dry and it had fresh garlic which burned and became bitter. Tons of salt on the tail and in the crabmeat topping. We were asked if we wanted to return it but I wasn't going to have my husband sit there and wait for his food to be cold. I ate three pieces of lobster, tried to scrape the salty top of the crab and eat the inside. Didn't work out too well so I just ate my sides. I felt husbands shrimp were also Over salted. Service is always great here so we tip accordingly. Now as to going back anytime soon, idk. It's very expensive and food is no longer consistent as it used to be. The cook needs to be retrained or fired. They no longer give the little Andes mints and they don't have the cream cheese and toasts on the bar any longer. Things like this made them special. The Maplewood, a staple in Vineland for years, maybe 30 or more. The food is usually very good, although the freshness of the seafood is questionable and that is from their staff. You can't go wrong with the veal parmigiana, always delicious! The interior was recently updated, yet the old lamps remain, maybe it's nostalgia. The bread, dipping sauce and salad really stand out and different from anywhere else. I like the restaurant, but there a few things that bother me other than the lamps, they open at 4 but don't expect to sit where you want as some tables are held for the 5pm servers. Howard, the owner, may speak to you if he's in the mood, if not he won't. The family decided to go on a two-day fluke fishing trip, so as the kick-off dinner we decided on this restaurant. What a great choice, first of all, our waitperson David was friendly and offered many suggestions and pairings. We decided on a large and small entree of stuffed broiled shrimp and the fried oyster entree is as our main courses. Secondly, the food was delicious, a noteworthy point was the sides, better green beans I have never tasted, they were truly fantastic, as was the table salad and warm bread. We received a gift card to try the Maplewood in Vineland. Never been, and never will again. My order was for the Crab Imperial $29.99, I have attached the picture. I was so appalled, I contacted them immediately. The owner came on the phone to justify the portion and look of a $30 crab meal by saying the crab meat is expensive. Just because the crab is expensive does not mean the presentation should look worse then a diner take out. He was confrontational and did not care that a patron just spent over $100 at his empty restaurant with a complaint. Then we will move on to the salads. Brown lettuce, wilted greens. Only thing good was the bread. Awful! The smaller Vineland restaurants are the way to go! At least they care about their patrons! read more

Very nice atmosphere and super polite and friendly staff. We got a selection of starters to begin with, there was not a huge selection of vegan options, but I got the garden salad and some baguette. As an entree, there were several vegetarian options, and I asked for barilla penne with spinach and tomato sauce without cheese and it was tasty. I was just missing spices other than garlic and the taste of olive oil. Not the healthiest food, but delicious. This is our favorite Italian place in the area! They start you out with warm bread and oil for dipping and family-style salad. My go-to dish is the gnocchi with sausage. It's phenomenal. My grandparents swear by the veal parm that is fork-tender. Service is always very friendly as well. read more

We were there yesterday for dinner. Bread was good, service was poor, food was average for the other three people, poor for me. I had the shrimp and scallops over cavatelli. It was too salty to eat. I left over most of it, even the shrimp and scallops, without having it packed to take home. I also tasted my wife's seafood over pasta dish, and it was blah. Because my dish was salty, I had to drink a lot of water. I had to ask the waitress for more water repeatedly, and not just for me but for the other s as well. You'd think after the first two times, she'd be more attentive, but she wasn't. I had to catch her as she was walking elsewhere. She kept filling it with a lot of ice, even after I asked for no more ice, which limited the amount of water in the glass. Even when bringing the check and putting it down next to my empty water glass, she still didn't think to refill our glasses while we were deciding on her tip! read more

I cut my rack & clearly blood came out of my food & was running into my sweet mashed & on my broccoli. My coworker ordered medium rare filet & I ordered medium well. It was obvious that the chef mixed two meat orders. The waiter apologized & took both back. My problem was when the manager brings my same plate back with the bloody juice swirling into my veggies to convince me that my lamb was cooked 'right' & to then give me a lesson on medium well with his phone flashlight & breathing over me & my food without a mask. I asked him to back up & that I am well versed on medium well which I order quite often. I am very disappointed with Maplewood service of the owner Kenny- the waiter John was very pleasant however the manager/owner - unacceptable. Just left The Maplewood restaurant in Vineland and could not get to my phone out fast enough to leave a review! My has this restaurant gone down in quality. This was the worst visit ever, the service by Joe was great, but the quality of the food and the riff raff back of the house employees made this visit horrible. If felt like we were sitting at a comedy club with the employees cracking jokes with one another and laughing loudly. We could barely hear ourselves talk. The food was under seasoned as it was the last time I was there. As I write this, there are two reviews for this place. And almost everything factual written by both, I agree with. Which is weird because one of the reviews is caustically hating the place, and the other is tolerant of it (even though it mentions that he's never had a bad meal here and had some excellent ones actually). So, what's going on here? I think it's Time Warp. The place is dated -- but happily so. This is the kind of Italian restaurant you went to as a kid with your parents and grandparents. It's not MODERN or CHIC or FUN. It's a freakin' restaurant! It has all the right components for the kind of restaurant it's trying to be: fabulous food, a broad menu, an exceptionally knowledgeable (if admittedly mostly ancient) wait staff, and very generous portions. If the people who dreamt up Olive Garden had a place they used to go to, and they wanted to try to make their national chain blander, more hip, and more accessible to suburban families of any ethnicity, they probably had a place like Maplewood III. Sorry if that's not what everyone wants. But that's the reason there's more than one kind of restaurant out there. Would I go back? Definitely. Was the food, service, and experience memorable? Yes. We went as three adults, but there were several large parties of more than 10, a few tables of 4-6 people including young kids, and yes, plenty of couples over age 75. Ahem, doesn't that probably indicate that this place is good and probably has a loyal clientele? Classic Italian seafood restaurant. Dark, simple, understated decor. Waitstaff in typical black outfits, service a little lax at times, but no biggie. The food is the draw here and the same people seem to be coming here forever and the menu seldom changes. And why should it? Braciole the size of a forearm on top of an enormous pile of fresh pasta in a delicate red sauce - the meat tender, the stuffing full of flavor. Softshell crab lightly fried. A literal pile of clams on top of linguini in white sauce. Joe's special should be renamed simply Joe's as its been on the menu for 30 years - always excellent. So many dishes, so few Sundays to eat out in a year! Prices are reasonable, no wonder there are regulars! So nice to walk into a place that feels comfortable, that isn't pretentious, yet still serves good food. For two days after the hurricane, I sat powerless in Jersey City, with very little gas and nowhere to go. My parents, despite living two hours south, aided my getaway by bringing me ten gallons of gas. As a result, I insisted upon taking them to dinner when I escaped to their full-powered, unaffected-by-Sandy hometown. I left it up to them and of course they chose their good old reliable, Esposito's Maplewood. It has been a fixture in the area for years and has never failed to disappoint. I hadn't been since I was a kid, so I was wondering how it would stack up these days since my palate is obviously much different now. We went around 6, knowing after 6:30, we would probably have to wait. We were seated immediately but the dining room was already starting to fill. Our server was attentive and friendly, taking our orders right away. He gave us plenty of time to peruse the large menu, which had the same steak, seafood, and pasta I remembered from my younger years. As is always custom here, we were served bread and salad prior to our meal. The bread was warm and the herb, caper, and roasted red pepper bread dip just as flavorful as I'd remembered. The knife they gave to cut through the baguette was as dull as a pair of safety scissors though, making it difficult to cut through the crusty exterior. House salad - a nice mix of different lettuces, radish, carrot and sweet peppers - came in a large bowl with zesty Italian-style dressing. The calamari and scungili app was amazing. The flavorful red sauce had a nice kick, like an arrabbiata. Scungili and calamari, which is usually overcooked very easily, was tender and not the least bit rubbery. We only wished we had more and could have eaten it for our main course had it been larger. My entree, the shrimp and scallop scampi, was on the spicier side as requested from some extra crushed red pepper. The homemade spaghetti was perfectly al dente. However, there was way more pasta than seafood, and it was swimming in scampi sauce. The sauce was not a dressing as it should be, and turned what would have been a beautiful pasta dish into a bowl of spaghetti drowned in an olive oil and garlic broth. The broccoli rabe side I ordered was well executed, with a nice balance of garlic, tomato, and olive oil. Dad's broiled tilapia and crab was well prepared, and the spinach he ordered with it was perfect. Mom's veal was tender but for the price, it would have been nice to get something on the side besides a small bowl of pasta. She was satisfied with her meal, although it generally doesn't take much these days. Beer selection is very limited (think basic domestics); not sure about the wine list. They do have a full bar if you prefer the harder stuff or a mixed drink. As others have noted, the decor is a bit dated and the lighting is dim. The clientele is indeed older folks who have frequented the place for years. But if you go to a place like L'Veau d'Or or Keen's in New York, you will see much of the same, and not many would dare say the quality of the food has suffered because of these things. You don't go expecting bright lights and a hip scene. You do, however, go with the expectation that you are indeed spending a little more than what you would elsewhere, but you're also getting a quality meal instead of pre-made, preservative-laden, chain restaurant sludge. Maplewood is unapologetically old school Italian-American, and it was good to know it still came through for me thirty years later. read more

A throwback and a relic. Decor is right out of south Philly in the mid '70s which, incidentally, seems to be the average age of their patrons. The food is mediocre. I like sautéed soft shells but they can't accommodate that simple request because they either buy them already breaded for frying or make them in big batches - for frying. The menu is an antique. It's either pasta, meat or seafood. Nothing creative. Probably hasn't changed much since they opened. Wait staff is well suited for their clientele but I'm not quite there and like to think that my tastes are not so pedestrian. For a place so busy they only have a handful of reviews - my grandmother doesn't Yelp. What gets me is that on the weekend is that they are jammed. The Maplewood III has been around for decades and I recently dined here for the first time since the 1990s. Not surprisingly, not much has changed. The menu, the decor, and the clientele is all pretty much the same. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but if you want an inventive or unique meal you'll probably be underwhelmed. The place was jammed on a Saturday evening but we snared one of the last open table in the 'upper dining room' near the front, which is more brightly lit and a bit quieter than the back. Our server was friendly, courteous, and efficient, and has probably been working here for 25 years. I chose the fried flounder which comes with two side dishes served in small bowls (a la the typical NJ diner). It was hot (temp-wise), and reasonably tasty. Tarter sauce and cocktail sauce accompanied the meal in small plastic cups. My sides were the yummy (and butter drenched) garlic mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables, which included that Vineland-area staple of zucchini. The others with us got fried shrimp and stuffed shrimp. Portion sizes were good and everyone was satisfied. Prices are a touch high but Maplewood has very little competition - there are precious few higher-end restaurants in the area. read more

We ordered Eggplant Parm with a side of linguini, Spaghetti and Meatballs, and the wife had a glass of house Pinot Grigio. Over priced for starters. Friend ordered shrimp scampi, well the shrimp must have scampered. He paid quite a bit for a bowl of spaghetti with like 5 shrimp. The sauce was mostly oil. No choice of dressing for salad only plain oil, at least that is how it looked and tasted but the peppers in the salad were delicious. My meal was good, stuffed lobster but again very pricey for what I got. However the garlic mashed potatoes were fantastic. Came here on a Saturday night. Was pretty packed but seated quickly. We ordered our drinks, and they give u bread and a dish of flavored oil for dipping. Yummy!!! Very good. Then the salad was brought out, which was also very good. My friend ordered the lasagna which she said was good, very big portion! She had no complaints. I got the Cavatelli pasta with meatballs. It was ok...it was very watery on the bottom..way too much red sauce on top for my liking, but it was ok. Very big portions! We visited the restaurant on September 22nd for dinner for a family of 8. The food was not good in the least bit. Multiple platters had zero taste. The shrimp and scallops over homemade spaghetti which was supposed to be spicy tasted like spaghetti in a plain butter sauce. Seafood was chewy. New York Strip steak came out over cooked. I always forget about this restaurant and don't understand why it's not talked about more but my friends decided to take me to the Maplewood last week and it was great. I'm always looking for more of the upscale restaurants rather than the same old chain restaurants in our area (and there really is none). We did not have to make reservations because there were only four of us so we got right in. The menu was pretty to the point but they did have some great choices. Their martini menu is amazing. I had never had a martini until I came to the Maplewood but now I am a huge martini lover. They have so many choices from Cinnamon Toast Crunch to Orange Crush. I ended up getting mussels and salmon. The salmon was cooked just right, a little crispy like I like it. The atmosphere is great here. Even though you are close to people its not overwhelming. I did not feel like anyone was in our conversation. It was such a good time and by the time we were done I think we had ordered 5 martinis each! My wife had broiled seafood combination and we both had broiled stuffed lobster tail and the food was very delicious with a great taste and portion size. I've been coming here since I moved to town. At first it was for functions and then for family dinners. This is good authentic Italian food. The decor is nice enough. Nothing special, but pleasant enough to know you are out for a decent meal. I am partial to the seafood dishes. I have never had a bad meal here and a few have been excellent.
