I went in looking for cushion soles for my trail running shoes because I started getting pain on my foot. They listened to me and checked my gait to confirm it was not any fault with the way I walk or run. Then proceeded to give options on what might be helpful. They checked my shoe size and finally we narrowed it down to shoe being a size smaller and not wide enough in the front to accommodate my foot shape. I tried various other shoes with wider front and got one with extra cushion. Of late running with those shoes. I do not have any pain anymore. They know what they are doing!! read more

My friend and I just began running, and our third friend, who has done track before, insisted we needed new sneakers. "Yours literally have holes in the bottom of them." Okay, yes our shoes were a couple years old and were kind of dingy. But we never used them to run in. We were like "sneakers are sneakers. as long as they have pretty colors and don't look like loser shoes, I'm okay." Apparently not so. I found Northampton Running Company (apparently a subset of Woodbridge Running Company? I don't know) online because they carried Sauconys, which our expert friend considered the best. We caught a bus and walked down a long street in the cold misting rain, wondering where the heck this place was, only to find it tucked further from the road. It looked small, which made me worried if they had what I was looking for, but we went in. Whoever was working there at the time was helping someone else out, so we looked at the clothes and shoes on display against one wall. Now this place was small, like the size of a cute ice cream shop, but it IS northampton and many stores aren't that big there. We were a tad shocked by the prices, but then again we weren't used to buying running shoes. "$120?! I don't want to spend more than like $50." "That's why you buy them online." I felt rather bad we were saying this. Our plan had been to check out shoes and then buy them cheaper online. The man working there was friendly though and said hi, asking if he could help us with anything. I explained my situation with my flat feet. He told me to walk around, observing my walk, and took a look at my shoes. He determined I had mildly collapsing arches. He went to find some shoes for me. As I tried on the sneakers, I noted they felt a bit tight. He found me wider sneakers which worked much better. Meanwhile, he helped out my two other friends. Soon, we were running all over the tiny store, trying to gauge what felt the best. He was very patient and helpful with his answers, telling us what arch supports did, how much arches matter (or actually don't matter), what running form is ideal (where in your shoes you should be pushing off from), what the labels on the shoes meant, which shoes wore out the most, etc etc. The floor was covered in shoes. We felt like children playing with toys. It was a lot of fun. Eventually we all wound up buying the same shoe: the Asics GT-2000, all in different sizes. It was a funny coincidence that we all fell in love with its comfort and freedom, but its awesomeness was not to bemy denied. Jeff (we finally found out his name) told us we could try them out and return them if they didn't work out. He rang us up and gave us 10% off (so nice, plus my friends are good about asking for discounts with huge purchases). It's funny that we came in not planning to buy anything, but really, Jeff's service impressed us a lot. He could easily have been cold and irritable knowing that we sounded like we weren't going to buy anything. It was really sweet that he really tried to help us figure out what was best for us and told us to take our time - no rush. Apparently other people have been far worse (I thought I was indecisive, but 4 hours picking shoes is excessive). I really had a fantastic experience at Northampton Running Company, and what's even more awesome is that they're cheaper than buying offline. I also prefer spending money in local stores vs online ginumbo ones - you never know who it's going to with big impersonal companies. But local shops are a dying breed so I like to support them. They have a wonderful personal touch and that's a huge part of shopping that I think we often overlook. It was clear that Jeff really loved running and it's awesome to have those kinds of people to help beginners out. I am super grateful and hope to go back there again for my next pair! I rolled in here because I knew I needed a shoe that would work for me, and not cause me pain like my current trainers. I was not disappointed. Brandon was awesome; he listened to my concerns and training schedule/habits in order to come up with a working solution. He pulled out 6+ pairs of shoes for me to be sure I got the right one. He didn't rush me or pressure me and seemed genuinely interested in making sure I found the right training solution. While I was in there, everyone said hello and asked me about my running habits, etc. super friendly crowd and I feel good giving $ to a local business. I googled it later, and I paid exactly what Macy's, dicks, and Finish line were charging, except I got specialized attention, experience and shopped local! read more

Knowledge staff that don't push their opinions but provide their knowledge so you can form your own opinion. I was in on a Saturday. Only one gentleman working and 3 of us shopping. He never made me feel rushed, in the way or bothersome...like many chain stores. He genuinely seemed to care that we all found the product we needed/we're looking for. Knowledgeable, helpful, not pushy, awesome sales staff here. I am a complete amateur runner so a little intimidated by shopping at most niche running stores, but this place caters to every skill level. They have a standard routine where they check your foot size, arches, watch you walk and run to analyze your gait, ask questions about how your run, etc and recommend a pair to try on... then based on your feedback suggest at least a couple of others for comparison even if you liked the first pair. My wife must have tried on 8 pairs and the sales staff were patient the whole time. I tried on a few and felt like I had the perfect ones for me by the time we left. All retail experiences should be this great. read more

Much like chinese menus and yellow pages, this is a total waste of paper, time and money. Smart people are here, on the web, reading reviews, not looking for crap you put on their windshield. Last summer I was training for the Chicago marathon in a pair of sneakers I got at a TJ Max and started getting terrible shin splints. I had only been running for a year and I didn't really know what I was doing. So I decided to stop in Northampton Running Company to get a pair of shoes that might help my shins. Best decision I ever made. The woman who helped me was exceedingly patient. She explained everything about the shoes to me. Though they don't have the fancy foot measuring computers or treadmill cameras of the larger stores, she watched me walk around the store and told me I just needed a neutral shoe with more cushion and cooling than the trail running shoes I had been wearing. She helped me rule out shoes that just weren't worth trying on given my feet and running plans, and let me run a block down the street to test them out. She must have brought out eight different shoes before I finally tried on a pair of Brooks. They were Brooks Ghost 5s and even with minimal breaking in they got me through that marathon without a single blister or blackened toe. I've been running in them ever since and they are literally the perfect shoe for me. After the marathon I came in with my partner who had decided to take up running as well. She had barely any running experience at all, pretty bad overpronation, and was not what people normally think of as "running sized." The same woman helped us and again she was super patient, gave a visual foot diagnosis, and actively listened to my partner describe her concerns and experiences with other shoes. She took my partner seriously as a runner. My partner had tried two different pairs of shoes, professionally fitted with one of those fitting computers at another running store and both gave her shin splints. The shoes she bought here, without the computer aid, were a thousand times more comfortable and helped her prevent early injuries. The lessons here: 1)Buying good running shoes for a newbie can be a stressful and intimidating experience. You might worry that you will look like an idiot, that you won't be taken seriously, that you won't fit in with the runners, or that you'll be treated with condescension. Not at Northampton Running Company. 2) Runners need support and advice, not just good shoes, you will find that at Northampton Running Company 3) Shoes actually ended up being cheaper here than buying online 4) Fancy computers and foot measuring devices are all very well, but a highly experienced runner and shoe saleswoman can often do just as good or better a job 5) It's a small store, with a relatively small selection, but they only carry shoes that they actually believe in. This prevents poor decisions based mostly on being overwhelmed by options. If you buy shoes here, you know that they are good shoes. I normally purchase my running shoes at big department stores, just grabbing whatever shoe was in my size. I've been increasing my training/distance and decided it was time to stop in to northampton running co! It was a great decision! Adam was a tremendous help! He put me through a few tests to determine what type of sneaker would best suit my needs and then brought out several brands/styles in different sizes for me to try and test out!
