We enjoyed the Marketplace's unusual cafe and had Matcha and Golden milk--the most amazing selections when you don't feel like coffee. Both were lattes, well-made and delicious. Where can you find golden milk! We will be back. Since we were in the Marketplace in Northampton, we discovered the Olive Oil vendor across from the cafe, and decided to do a tasting. We were treated with such hospitality, that what started as a whim, became a purchase. We actually loved the tastings of both the oils and balsamic vinegars, and decided to take advantage of the special so we got a bargain. I opted for the fig balsamic--my fav, and for the tasting, was delighted. It isn't as sweet as the ones I've had before, but it is acceptable. I do think I should try some others. We really enjoyed the shopping, tasting, and European feel of the whole Marketplace environment. It is a treat. read more

Cute collection of stores from artisan shops to whole food and restaurants. All under one roof.

I have driven through Northampton a handful of times since moving back to MA, but took a day to properly stroll about the downtown area, and it's such a great town. I actually did not even know Thornes Marketplace exists, but it is a wonderful assortment of local stores with creations by local artists, and so much more. Herrell's Ice Cream in the basement is another reason to stop by before heading out. I look forward to checking it out again when I am back in the area! read more

Thornes Marketplace is an old building with 4 or 5 levels that has been turned into sort of a mini mall while retaining the feel and character of an old building. Some of the stores have been there over 25 years (Cornucopia) and some probably not very long. There's also a wine bar, places to eat, and Herrell's Ice Cream has moved here from across the street. It was quite busy on a Sunday afternoon during leaf peeping season! I'll be back! read more

Maybe it's the tourist in me coming out but I thought this shopping center was extremely charming and cozy even if it's just to grab a cup of coffee or hot chocolate to hang out. Ok, admittedly, the majority of the stores here are overpriced, but there were a couple worthwhile. There was a young lady selling local honey infused with flavor like cardamom at a very reasonable price, so I guess it's hit or miss when it comes to finding something worthwhile. FYI to fellow bookworms, there's a used bookstore named Ravens here, you can easily spend an hour browsing here. The shopping center is also in close proximity to lots of other local shops and restaurants. Parking can be a bit of a hassle, but there are parking meters scattered throughout as well as a lot about 2 blocks away that's a pay and park. Take time and enjoy the lovely shopping center and surrounding area. read more

When traveling, my husband and I love small towns with interesting stores and shops to poke in and out of. Northampton is becoming one of our favorites and we visited this weekend, but it was sooooooo cold (below zero) that walking around outside wasn't exactly practical. That's when we discovered Thornes. No idea how we didn't find it last year when we were here but it was great to discover it on this trip. It's like a mall but with the charm of a small town, and without the obnoxious chain stores. It's a "shop local", multiple-story, architecturally delightful old building, filled with little shops, vendors and cafes that you can just take your time strolling through. We really enjoyed wandering in and out of all the interesting little stores. The young women in the candy store was so friendly. The Acme shops had useful little gadgets and doodads that were fun to look at. The artisan shops with beautiful decorative pieces was amazing (though pricey admittedly). We enjoyed the book store, the home goods store and lots of others.... and all in the warmth of indoors, while the cold and snow stayed outside. We bought little things here and there that tickled our fancy and ended up with some nice, unique souvenirs from our adventure. I'm not sure why anyone would complain about parking (another review). Thornes building is literally attached to a parking garage (which is behind it). There's metered parking all over town, and it's not really a huge town. We parked down a little street across of Sylvester's and paid the meter and made the short walk... and if we can do it in sub zero temperatures.... you see what I'm saying :) We really had a great time in this area for our little end of the year trip for the weekend, and were glad that Thornes Marketplace was a part of that. It's a typical place for typical tourist shopping. It's a very nice place but not anything different as far as I can see. Just the usual kind of shops. Parking and traffic in that area of Main Street is **totally ridiculous**. Do what the locals do and go up a couple of blocks to Forbes Library on West Street. They have metered parking. The meters are owned by the city and the money goes to the library. There is no sign saying it is for library patrons only. Everyone parks there and heads off down the street. I would say there are more people parking there because it's convenient than to use the library. Two hour maximum and you get an hour for a quarter. There are also four hour spaces but only a couple as far as I could see. There are also a couple of 30 minute spots. But most are two hours and it's a decent sized lot though spaces are a little cramped. I managed to get a space each time I went. Forget Main Street, head to Forbes and save yourself aggravation. read more

My client suggested that I take a drive north from Westfield. MA one evening (about 20 minutes north) and enjoy the restaurants and cultural offerings of the town of Northampton, Massachusetts. Northampton is home to five colleges in Western MA, and as a result it has an especially vibrant youth culture with street performers, musicians, and free-spirited activists, as well as plenty of things to see and do. I found a parking garage in the downtown area that was adjacent to Thornes Marketplace and started my tour of Northampton by walking in the door of this retail market. Thornes was constructed in 1873 as a dry goods store, and has expanded many times into the current three-story building with pressed tin ceilings, hardwood floors and staircases, and a host of architectural details that make this a fun place to wander among the eclectic shops, cafes, and restaurants all under one roof. Unlike a traditional department store, Thornes is a collection of shops selling books, men's and women's apparel and shoes, home furnishings, writing papers, ice cream, cosmetics and hand-blended fragrances, artisan jewelry, and educational toys and games. Maybe 30 individual store fronts inside the one building. I had a great time walking along past the various shops, and stopping to see what they were offering. Prices were high, but it was fun to look for some unique gifts, and absorb a little of the city's history. Cool spot and well worth a visit! read more

One stop Northampton shopping destination. Parking: surface lots & side streets (both metered) and an inexpensive parking garage (pay on your way out but BEFORE you get to your car). Now that we got that out of the way, let's talk about how awesome this place is. You've got bathrooms (yup, it is essential), elevators, and lots of shopping options. FOOD: Coffee shop that has sandwiches, chocolate store, cookie store, ice cream store, and a restaurant called Paul & Elizabeth's (which is on my Western Mass bucket list). Shopping: Cedar Chest for personal & home goods, and ACME surplus store for pretty much anything. Lots of clothing, accessory, and jewelry places in between. Did I mention that it is all enclosed in one giant shopping area. Like a mall, but not dead yet. It is actually somewhere people want to be. I know this isn't going to be perfect, or have a zillion vendors like a bustling overly commercial mall, but for what it is, Thornes Marketplace is pretty nice. read more

Thornes is Northampton in a nutshell. The stores are a bit on the pricey side, but alot of what you are paying for is the unique items they offer and the experience of shopping in one of New England's greatest towns. Northampton boasts many shops that bend the conventions of other shops, and the shops in Thornes are no exception. Be sure to check out the ACME surplus store in the basement if you're looking for a bargain! This is a very attractive and cool mall. It is a nice place to slowly meander through, get a coffee, chocolate, look at some cool, boutiquey stuff. It's small - but you're walking up stairs so that suits me fine. It's just perfect for sweet little Noho (yes, I still call it that). But it doesn't really offer very much. And I noticed the first store on the right that I used to like so much has changed into something uninteresting. The people are attractive and friendly enough - but you're not gettting too much done while you're here, I'm afraid. read more

Pretty neat place actually! I went here a few years ago with a few of my friends from school. They had a coffee shop where you can order espresso drinks. There was also a chocolate shop near the espresso shop. They had book store upstairs and a gift shop downstairs. The gift shop down stairs had dollar store type stuff, some stuffed animals, and some basic office supplies. It's a great place to shop on a rainy afternoon or night. read more

I really love this place, I been going to school here for 3 years but I never go to NoHo! This is such a nice marketplace and you can find some cool stuff at the different places. I really like Cedar's Chest. I bought a shower curtain there....and been eyeing this framed quote so I might just have to return to pick it up! They have stores. I overpaid for a beautiful scarf from one of the stores and it was worth every penny. As for the mini-mall itself, the existence of stores seem peripheral to its true purpose of providing a space with narrow passageways so old people can kinda waddle back-and-forth really slow and frustrate the eff out of you. Takes about 15 minutes to walk 30 yards there because you have to deal with the waddlers and complete disrespect for the staying on the right or using the right at exits/entrances. read more

I thought the building itself was charming, but the stores - not so much. I hit up a used coat at the ACME store that lasted for years... $5 maybe? So, big plus. I actually found the layout of the stores rather confusing, and some of the wood floors creaked beyond belief, so that was freaky. Overall, the merchants in Thorne's charge too much for their wares. This place seems to be geared towards the affluent Yuppies, that have increasingly invaded Noho. The worst merchant in this place is the Marketplace Cafe. They are very overpriced, have crummy food, and rip-off their customers. The only merchants in Thorne's that give you good deals at reasonable prices, are Paul & Elizabeth's, Cornucopia, ACME Surplus, and Ferrell's. read more

Located right at the heart of Northampton Center, I always have to stop at Thornes when I'm shopping in the area, even if I don't buy anything. And I usually don't. Some stores in Thornes can be a little pricey, as other reviewers have mentioned. I think I can count the number of purchases I have made at Thornes on one hand, and most of those consist of really cute bangle watches that cost about 10 dollars each. Herrell's Ice Cream's flagship location is in Thornes (I believe their ice cream is also sold at a shop in Williamstown and a couple other locations), and their ice cream is delicious, not to mention the hot fudge! I could go on, but I must save that for a different review. More than anything, Thornes is one of those places you have to stop at because you've heard other people talk about it. read more

Really nice small town marketplace. It's a building with a bunch of small stores. There are a bunch of small boutiques, a restaurant, a small bookstore, and a stationary store. Noteworthy, the stationary store has to be my favorite. It has a lot of really cute/nicely designed cards and stationary. read more
