I arrived at the Lafrenaie location inside the Roaster's which has its own entrance on Atwater Ave on my sister's birthday. Moreover, I was looking for a last minute cake. There were several options available but I needed assistance. All the while FaceTiming my mom and sending pictures of cakes to my brother in law, Roxanne waited and smiled patiently and even chipped in with recommendations. We finally came to an agreement and she offered to personalize the cake and asked me if I was going to eat it that evening or the next day because the strawberries would be frozen . She went in the back and replaced all the frozen berries on top pf the cake for fresh ones so that we could enjoy it the same day. She went above and beyond and exceeded my expectations. My 8 year old sister, who suffers from celiac disease felt very left out whenever we visited one of these shops and we all felt bad. Even my dad, who normally follows a gluten free diet, broke his fast just so he could try some crepes. Desperate to let her try some pastries, we found Cookie Stéfanie, which was just minutes away by foot from the Westin Hotel we were staying at. She was so excited when we found it! When we entered, we were greeted my the warm aromas of fresh cakes, bars, and cookies. She chose what she wanted quickly after looking at the case full of gluten free desserts. She went to the convenient counter to order her dessert. It was given to her quickly, fresh and warm. We took a seat in the cozily decorated back (pictured) and watched her devour the carrot cake she had ordered. She loved the frosting! I tried the cake and thought it was delicious for a gluten free baked good. The next day, we had walked to McGill university and were dying for something sweet. Again, we stubbled upon Cookie Stéfanie. I had some fresh fruit and a sparkling lavender lemonade. My dad got a blueberry bar, my mom got a latte, my older sister got a chocolate cupcake, and my little sister got a caramel cake. They all said it hit the spot after our long excursion. Yum! While this storefront located in the middle of office buildings, when you walk inside the absolutely beautiful decorations remove you from the urban hustle and bustle. The other Pâtisserie Mahrousé location is the original, dating back to 1970 when it was started by a Syrian pastry chef. Was eager to try their fatayer, savory pastries. Surprised to learn that they didn't sell here single, individual Fatayers, I was extremely happy the super friendly staff allowed me to mix and match to make it a pack of 6! (My choice of Fatayers included the delicious Tomato with Olives, Spinach, Cheese and round Za'atar!) Before pulling away, my brother and his wife decided to join me inside. The welcoming people behind Pâtisserie Mahrousé's counter encouragingly offered us tastings of their delicious sweets. One was a Kunafeh sweet cheese pastry, another similar to a nut filled Baklava. Their mouthwatering sweet treat selection was impressive. (Note - Many traditionally incorporate pistachios, on trend since as I've repeatedly noted "Pistachio is the new Hazelnut!") We were able to truly relax in Pâtisserie Mahrousé's comfortable window seating with brass tables facing the well designed interior instead of the modern surroundings. I did a quick search online and found this Middle Eastern bakery only 400m from our hotel room. So we headed there. The bakery is very pretty. I loved the chandeliers and painted walls and ceiling. There's a limited amount of seating, but we planned on bringing it back to our hotel anyway. Upon entering we were offered a small sample of their cream kunafe with shredded phyllo. It was very tasty. I debated getting a large piece of it, but decided to stick with my original plan which was a piece of their cheese kunafe. It was $8.50. I got it heated up. Unfortunately by the time we got back to the hotel it had cooled down a bit and the cheese wasn't as pully, lol.
