We love going to mardens. Never know what you're going to find. Men's clothing was underwhelming. Couldn't find any belts. Not much variety for pants or shirts. Each shoe size seemed to have one option. Size 10 had brown leather shoes. Size 11 had work boots for example. Sock and undershirts seemed to be in 5 places. The aisles are short and so having a cart is awkward and you are often in someone's way. We did not find many things we wanted on the day we visited. Most things seemed to be sparsely populated with them setting up Christmas stuff. Large furniture area. When we need a new couch we will check this place out. Nice fabric area too. Which seemed well picked up. The cashier was polite but it must have been a shift change as we saw 5 open lanes when we got there and only one when we checked out. And then two others came on. Kudos to her for just pushing through. No fantastic deals this time but that's part of the fun. You never know. read more

I should have bought it when I saw it, at Mardens. That little jingle still sticks with me. Whenever I come back home, I always have to make a trip here. You never know what surprises you will find. I found a pair of J. Crew white jeans for only $19.99 so naturally, I had to scoop them up. A few other treasures as well, like Venus 6pack razors for only $3.99 Glade plug in linen scent. 9pack for $19.99 priced in stores like Target, just 1 is $5.99 pretty good deal. Marden's is about as Maine as it gets. They have a little bit of everything, I mean everything. Food, clothes, flooring, office supplies, you name it they usually have it or can get it. You will need to be patient but it's worth the wait to look through things. read more

I love, love, love this store. I visit each and every time I'm back in Maine. On the most recent trip I was besides myself with joy finding so many Free People clothing items. From $300 dresses, to bras, tank tops, jeans and skirts they were all there for 60% off of the retail price. Not too shabby (though to be honest I did anticipate the prices would be a bit lower). Other great finds were John Frieda hair products, fresh from the local bakery whoopie pies (for only $1), and Bliss spa products. While I didn't venture downstairs I've found amazing things down there as well. Housewares, tools, shovels, car accessories, and home repair materials. If you don't mind doing some digging you can certainly get a hold of some amazing finds! read more

The result *used* to be, decades ago, deeply discounted goods updated weekly. Some time ago, Mardens became more like just another Walmart. Such a big loss for us! PRICES: Still low prices, but... sometimes you get what you pay for. IE. Your cheap shoes fall apart quickly, or your cheap food is already...expired. STORE: Dirty shelves, over-stuffed with often disorganized stock for you to sort through. Think of it like a puzzle you have to solve. I know, I know - there are Marden's all over the state of Maine (I believe 14 from Sanford to Presque Isle). And our locally infamous "surplus and salvage" store is pretty much the same across the board, but of them all I particularly like the Lewiston one the most. While I used to think this place was disgusting (so much so that I refused to enter the building whenever we ran errands here - what can I say? I have always been slightly irrational!), I grew to find that it's a frugal spender's dream store. I now have fond memories of going here with my grandfather when I was kid. He would come and get tools or other hardware for cheap. In my teens we used to come here early in the AM on Black Friday for Christmas wrapping paper (dozens and dozens of rolls for twelve cents a piece or something just as outrageous). And in my twenties I would come for the random truckloads of medications, high heels, or organic food they seemed to get (part of the entertainment of Marden's, I believe, is seeing what they get for a shipment each week that they then haphazardly toss in enormous piles in the center of the store). Is it the cleanest store in the whole wide world? No. It's on the same level as most Goodwill's or Salvation Army's; but, compared to other Marden's - it's gorgeous, spacious, and you can find everything from furniture, arts and crafts supplies, seasonal decorations, clothing, and technology in big quantities for low, low prices. I don't get it. Years ago this was a bargain shoppers dream. It's not that way at all anymore. Having worked retail many years in many positions, I have a general sense of what is a good deal or not. Finding a deal here can happen, but it's rare and certainly not worth the aggravation. Sometimes when I see the prices, I get infuriated. I can buy the same thing for same price or cheaper at Big Lots or Walmart. And in a clean, undamaged box. The store is filthy, the furniture is a rip off....even flooring is far more expensive than Home Depot these days. Items are scattered everywhere, the place is a dump and I stopped shopping there...finally. The most amazing and aggravating thing about this place is how busy it is all the time. People won't get out of the way, and navigating this store sucks. Why it is busy must be the years of brainwashing and the fact at one time this WAS a bargain store. There is almost nothing here you cant get somewhere else for the same price and as a bonus, it won't be dirty and/or shopworn. I just don't get it. I will forever avoid this place. read more

Walked into Marden's in Lewiston today (7/3) and walked right out because they are NOT requiring their customers to wear masks. They don't even have a sign stating masks are required- PLUS- employees are not even "politely" asking customers to wear a mask. I counted 40 people without masks and then stopped counting. They should have a sign that says; "No Shoes. No Shirt. No Masks. No Service." Spoke to Asst Mgr Bobby who stated he is following a directive from corporate and suggested I call them. I did- and spoke to their CFO Kyle, who must be part of the owner's family because he was so rude on the phone he obviously has no worries of being fired. Kyle told me "Marden's believes it is a violation of HIPPA to enforce customers to wear masks" and he cited people with respiratory problems being exempt. That is untrue. I am a severe asthmatic and I wear a mask. Marden's is defying the Governor's now mandatory order for everyone inside a public building to wear a mask. Marden's is putting zero effort into stopping this virus and they should be fined by the state for non-compliance. Marden's is risking EVERYONE's health and contributing to the spread of Covid. You have to be in the mood for Marden's, and understand the fact you may not find anything. However, there are times you come across name brand clothes or a fantastic wooden chandelier. Those are the times that keep one going back. Its about keeping your eyes peeled and frequenting these types of stores. This was my first time visiting this location and I was hoping to find a rug, only to find out they didn't have any. The furniture selection wasn't too bad, looked like you could get a practically new couch for $600. I wasn't willing to sift through clothes and didn't need any holiday wrapping paper or trees so I left. The parking lot was full around 11am on a Wednesday and the store was full of eager shoppers. I think I'll stick to the smaller Gray location. read more

Let's be honest, this is where you go when you can't find it somewhere else, or you have way too much spare time.. I went to Marden's this week after having moved south 8+ years ago, and it's exactly as I remember it.. no, seriously, they still have some of the clothes they had 8 years ago. (Partially joking.) But I must say, I really forgot how much I enjoyed perusing through the insane amounts of EVERYTHING this place has. Every time I visit auburn Maine my family knows that it must include some serious browsing at Marden's on main st. I have purchased my favourite ankle boots and kicked myself for not buy 2 pairs, found great linen clothing , unique home decor items and an incredible fabric department that I can lose hours in. I work in publishing and have fantastic access to free books and I have even flown home with some too good to leave behind cook and craft book. Yes , the store can be dusty and shabby in sections and there can be some weird offerings in the toy department but bargain shopping is a sport. You're either up for the work of digging in or you don't have the energy. There are so many sections to check out and sometimes you really hit a homer!! Though it pains me deeply, my integrity as a Yelper demands that I overcome my sentimental attachment to severely discounted bargain basements of my youth and come to terms with the fact that Mah-den's is not what it once was. I was just using my $3.99 welding gloves (normally about $15-$20) to reach into the fireplace and rearrange the logs, and reminiscing about buying them at Marden's. Look, it is true that I've been to Marden's and walked out unimpressed, with no purchase in hand. But there have been more times when I've walked out with quite a deal. If you're at all an educated consumer, you can quickly sort through and figure out what is and isn't worth it. If you're impatient or quick to dismiss, this isn't the retail concept for you. Much better than Building 19 at the same game. Bigger than Ocean State Job Lot, and both more unpredictable and cheaper. Plus this location has a fair amount of building supplies downstairs. 9" C-clamp, for doing my brakes: also $3.99, $10 cheaper than at the regular stores, and good enough to hold up for what I need. I had never been to a Marden's before today and I will not be going back. I know it's a discount store and I wasn't expecting great merchandise or anything.. but the store itself is so filthy I didn't even notice if they actually had decent prices. The floors, registers and aisles were so messy and dirty I couldn't believe it. The staff didn't seem to have a care in the world about what was happening around them and even people who were shopping there seemed more rude than your average person- no "excuse me" or even waiting for you to walk by.. They just plowed right through and would reach around you to grab things. So strange and definitely not worth the trip. read more

Super discount store. You never know what you will find. Sometimes they have a great selection and other times nothing. It also depends on what you are looking for too. Great clothes usually. Party supplies and gifts are awesome. Usually great prices, but they are all over the place sometimes with prices. Friendly people. A little dirty, but that comes with the territory. Name brand merchandise at good prices. Sometimes the clothes are dirty or muddy or have holes, so check everything out carefully before you buy. read more

At the top of my overrated list for Lewiston and Maine. Infrequently anything worth buying, at any price, with a few exceptions. Generally high prices, given the "surplus" tagline. On the other hand, on the rare occasion that they have something that isn't crap, it may be priced like everything else, rendering it a deal or even a total steal. Things have changed at Marden's. Their prices have gone up and you cannot even trust that the prices on their merchandise is accurate. I tried on a pair of sneakers today which felt comfortable and fit well marked at 29.99. I brought them to the checkout.There was no problem at all with the price sticker. The girl looked at some number on the sole , opened a draw refused to proceed with the sale and called the manager. After 5 minutes she decided the correct price was 39.99. and not 29.99. I was upset as this was the actual price on the item . They seemed surprised that I refused to buy the item at the increased price, which I did on principle. First time I have had this happen in any store, even a discount store. read more

I love Marden's! I especially like to go to see what they have in for clothing, and food. One can get some real steals! I've found $200 designer work blazers with nothing wrong with them on sale for $10 there. Nice shirts and pants, that are brands sold by Macy's, for $5-$10. Sometimes I have to avoid going in there, because I'll always find a bunch of clothes that are too much of a deal to pass up. Do check the expiration dates on food, as sometimes they have items that have just barely passed the sell-by dates. Not what it use to be prices are all over the place once in awhile you find a decent price if you are willing to take the time and look. They had Nike sneakers for $110??? That's not a dea,l tried to buy some lumber for a very small project they had a plank of wood that out of 8ft 3ft was usable the rest was split and cracked with pieces missing they still wanted full price ..they asked me if I knew where I was they said we are a salvage store the price is the price. I love my Mah-dens, always have and always will. I spent three hours in there today just wandering and looking and seeing what might be there that I could use. Well, I'm sad to say, "Not much". And it wasnt because of the selection...that was amazing as always...it was because of the prices. If you want food items, the prices are slashed way deep...if you want other things? Not so much. A girls 5T skirt...8.99 (wrinkled and dusty). A double sheet set that can be found at Family Dollar Store, 21.99..."small" bathroom rugs, 10.00....that kind of thing. NOW don't talk to me about fabric!!!!! That dept is 10 stars for selection and pricing...Alas...I will always LOVE my Mah-dens, but, sadly, I cannot go 5 stars anymore. read more
