Good prices with minimal if any customer service. Do your research and know what you want before you go. If you can find someone who will actually talk to you it's 50/50 whether they treat you as a valued customer. Staff is often rude and condescending but probably because they're tired of answering stupid questions. Not a valid excuse because there are a lot of novices out there. Trade in or selling you're probably going to be disappointed in their offer although I have sold guns there before. All up big selection with good prices but don't expect to feel valued for spending your money there. read more

The customer service here is a joke. The only good thing about this store is that the guns are on display so you can hold them without needing assistance, which is great because good luck getting someone to talk to you. I waited a half hour to buy a box of ammo because 3/4 of the staff behind the counter were too busy doing other stuff, and the one guy on the counter was slowly low balling someone on their rifle. I love this place! Guns are out and available to handle without someone lording over you and the prices are the best you will find. I've bought both new and used guns there because they make it so easy to see and handle what you are interested in. Ammo prices for training rounds are also excellent though selection of defensive rounds is not the greatest. Staff is mostly friendly - they can get so busy that all they are doing is taking orders and filling paperwork so you may not get concierge level service (though I really don't need/want their opinions on my gun purchases). This is a "kid in a candy shop" place for me and I can easily spend an hour checking everything out. I generally leave with something so I have to limit the frequency of my visits or else I need a bigger gun safe. read more

An independent firearm dealer. That is a huge plus in my book. I am so tired of the big box stores taking over. Its nice to see small bus. guys getting the business. They have great selection of firearms. What is unique about this store is that all the guns are on display for you to look at with out pressure from pushy sales people. They have both used/ and new handguns on the wall you can look at without getting assistance from staff. The guns are tethered to the wall and it allows you look them over and make a decision on your own. Staff is friendly and helpful. Prices are very good. You really can't make this up . I am a fairly large collector of firearms. I saw a Marango Guns add in the paper and decided to use them for an FFL transfer. I spoke to three employes all said they would e-mail the paperwork to my FFL. Never happened. I kept calling back each time. I called them yesterday and after claiming they e -mailed it and not receiving it, I asked them to fax it. Received call today , my FFL never got it. He called them and they said they will fax to him immediately, after two hours I called back. Here's my answer from Karen after I told her the story. Impossible , we always do what we say, we can't be responsible for wrong e-mail or fax number and then she hangs up on me. Are you kidding. Your a business owner?? I will bet I own nearly half of their total inventory (value) in my collection. Can you imagine treating a potential customer on the phone like that? read more

I went here a couple times. First time after I won a gun on auction they had, and had a couple transferred there. That experience was great no problem nice people. Than I bid on another gun on their auction and won paid ahead of time came in to fill out the paperwork which is from my house is a lil over 80 miles round trip. I was all excited got a great deal, so I thought. I get there I fill out the paperwork look it over, looks great can't wait to gio to the range with it. When the guy behind the counter hits me with you know this rifle needs reloads because its not a normal round, I was like no. He told me the original owner changed the barrel on the rifle. I thought ok I've never done reloads and that's not what the ad stated but figured I'd take a look into it and give it a try. After much research I found its not as easy as one may think since it's a rim fire round and I would have to reload that. I ebt back in still within mt time limit since I never picked it up and said I've changed my mind I don't want it since it was not as advertised and way to difficult to reload. The guy tried yelling me they would have to charge me for the processing I said I ruined fight the charges since they falsely advertised. I was told I'd get my refund well after 4 business days and seeing nothing I contacted them and they first put thru the refund almost one week to the day it was supposed to be refunded. At least I finally got my refund, watch everything with them and stand up for yourselves if your right read more

Very unhappy with Marengo Guns experience. Purchased Ammo there and would not go back. Staff was not courteous or helpful in fact they were more rude than anything. Rushed me along wouldn't answer questions and didn't seem like they cared. Prices were not good and I had a hard time finding what I was looking for. Also wasted time trying to figure out the price of certain ammo with the way they had it marked. Which I actually tried to ask the staff and was blown off. Talked to management and same attitude. Ended up with some crappy ammo that really wasn't what I was looking for. Either way I would not go back. There are a lot of better options such as Fox Valley and others. I prefer to shop local over the online retailers but I may look at that in the future. Lastly, The selection and consignment firearms seemed over priced and most were in bad shape or beat up looking. Don't waste a day or a minute with Marengo Guns. Not a very convenient place to get to so you would think they would at least be courteous and helpful to the patrons. read more

The gun shop has the best prices new/and or used guns. They negotiate and cut deals. The staff isn't there to kiss anyone's ass and the don't try to pretend they are. They answer questions, point things out and sell you guns at great prices. Yeah, once I had to wait while the corrected a mistake they made, well they are human. The only knock I could think of is sometimes the used gun inventory isn't fully updated online. That's a stretch as well, if you want to know what they got to see what they got. Once, I couldn't make it out for an ammo sale and they took a deposit and saved my ammo for during the week pick up. If you are too sensitive to deal with a salesperson that's a bit of a smart ass go to Cabela's and buy from a cookie cutter corporation that is looking forward to smiling while they rape you and your wallet. read more

I've been coming in here since they first opened and were a tiny shop that sold coins and had a few guns in the back. They have grown to be a very large independent shop due to their very good prices and $10 FFL transfers. They are the cheapest prices I can find on new guns locally and usually within a few dollars of online prices. You do have to pay cash to save the most as credit cards get charged an extra fee of 2% but many large online places have the same fee structure. The new shop is huge and almost every gun is out to handle. Rifles are on giant racks, handguns are wired to the wall like cameras. The only guns behind the counter are the collector guns in back due to their replacement cost if damaged/dryfired. I've been to almost every gunshop in the chicago, milwaukee, rockford triangle and am not sure what shop you could compare to this place and say they have bad customer service. While Joe sadly doesn't work here anymore both Tammy and Mike have sold me guns since and were very nice and knowledgeable. I've also transferred several guns I've bought online and with large places like Grabagun and buds they are already on file. When I've bought off gunbroker a simple phone call and they e-mailed it while I was on the phone. If you are having issues with an FFL transfer I'd bet it's the other shop's issue. Keep in mind it is a gun shop, many customers are new to guns and require extra help in making a transaction. Even if you know what you want each transaction requires background checks and forms be filled out. You then have to wait 1-3 days to pickup your gun to meet state laws, requiring 2 stops to buy a gun. Sometimes if they are busy you may have to wait for a gun sale to go through to buy ammo. You may even have to go up to the counter and ask for help if you have questions about something on the floor. That's the nature of buying guns due to state and federal laws. You can go in plenty of little shops with much higher prices and wait just as long while the owner ignores you and talks to his fishing buddy for 20 minutes. I'm fine with a wait because a shop has great prices and is actually busy. read more

I typically try to support local businesses but the guy who i assume is the manager went out of his way to be rude to every patron in the store. It was unbelievable. I went back once more but the blonde girl and the manager acted as though they were being inconvenienced when I tried to make a purchase. I found this store upon recommendation from a fellow gun club member. I visited on August 8, 2015. I was impressed with the wide selection of guns on display without being under a glass showcase or the need get a sales person and show a FOID card to handle them. When I had found the gun that fit my needs, I went to the counter and purchased it without problem. My opinion is that there is no sales push or much in the way of help, but if you know about guns the display is great to choose from. I purchased a Sccy CPX1 for about $270, I completed the forms and picked up the gun on the 11 of August. I was offered a warrantee from Marango guns for $30, I declined as I felt Sccy has a good warrantee. I was told is was ok, to shoot the gun before cleaning by the store staff when I asked. I took the gun directly to my range where if failed before the first shot. I loaded the 10 round magazine and inserted it into the new gun after locking the slide back. I then released the slide to chamber the first round. It would not chamber until I manually pushed the slide back a bit then forward. The gun fired straight and on target but in the first magazine it did not cycle fully, being out of battery about 40% of the time. I tried about 100 rounds, each time the gun would not load a fresh magazine properly with out pushing the slide forward manually and multiple failures to feed. I tried PMC, S&B and Blazer 9mm new ammo, no difference. I bought this gun for self defense and thus was concerned about reliability and if it would be functional with defensive hollow points. I cleaned the gun today and again tried out how it feed both FMJ and JHP, bottom line, the results were poor. There was improvement with the FMJ loading when I manually cycled gun, the Remington JHP ammo I tried failed totally. I took the gun back to the store and explained the problem, I had hoped they would get me a different gun or give me my purchase price towards a Glock 27. I was disappointed that the best they could do was buy my used gun back for $200. I have decided to call Sccy and return the gun tomorrow to them, I would not recommend this store to a friend, as I felt the gun they sold me was defective when sold, and they should have credited the amount to a different gun and just returned the defective gun to Sccy, which I believe they could have done. A small charge for return, would have been ok, but a $70 loss in 1 day for a gun that never worked out of the box, was unacceptable to me. Customer service is important, I did not feel I got it from this store, Hopefully Sccy will solve the problem. Read the other reviews, I agree great selection and prices, but not high praise from me for customer service, one star for my experience. read more

I asked for some sights to be replace, which I had been told were " VERY difficult and expensive" and Joe did them for me in less than 30 minutes at a freaking fraction of what the other morons in McHenry and Crystal Lake were asking. I think if you find these people to be rude or "tools" it is most likely because they are just mirroring your attitude. I have visited this store on numerous occasions. Since they moved into their new larger location the place is much improved. They have an incredible selection and if they do not have it they will get it for you. They also have the best prices in Northeast IL you will find. Here is my story: I decided I wanted a new shotgun. After researching guns I picked out what I wanted and started calling around to get prices. I started with the big outdoor chains in the game. One of them would not give me a price because they did not have one in stock, another one gave me a price that was significantly over the MSRP and then told me that they did not have one and were not sure how long it would take to get one. Then I called the local gun shops in the area. If you are a gun owner I am sure you are familiar with them so I will not name names. One of them gave me a price that I thought was a bit high and told me that had it in stock. The other two gave me ridiculously high process and told me they did not have it in stock. Marengo guns had it listed on their website with a lower price than anyone else. So I drove over to Marengo guns. There were not very busy and so instead of rummaging around looking for the gun I just went to the counter and asked for what I wanted. The guy behind the counter walked me over to where what I wanted should be located but they did not have the gun I wanted in the gauge I wanted (they had a 12 ga but not a 20 ga). He then told me he would check to see when he could get it. He looked at several different distributors and found that he could get the gun from multiple sources. He then found one that he could get it from that was even below the price listed on their website and he could have it in his shop in 3-5 days. Needless to say we did the paperwork and completed the purchase. I did not find any of the employees rude or unhelpful. In fact, I found them to be the exact opposite I did not have any problems or issues completing the transaction. In fact, I found it to be a very smooth and painless process compared to some of the places I have purchased firearms in the past. I will be back to purchase more firearms here in the future. A couple of things to note: Marengo guns has a policy where you pay $30 over their invoice price. They will show you their invoice price if you ask them. Indeed, I paid $30 over their invoice price for this shotgun. However, it is important to note that this policy is only if you pay in cash or with a check. If you pay with a credit or debit card there is a different policy because of the fees they have to pay to accept the cards. My advice to you is that you go with cash or a checkbook to get the best deal, although they do have an ATM in the shop in case you did not bring cash with you. read more

The Saga of horrible customer service continues with Marengo guns. This morning the wise guy (the owner) called to tell me after reading my Yelp and facebook review that I was NEVER to come into Marengo guns shop again. My assumption is that the truth hurts and as low class as this proprieter is I am not at all shocked at all nor losing any sleep about never being able to return which I am not sure is even legal! When I asked him what part of the review was wrong ALL he could say was that I did NOT wait that long and he never implied I would have to return if he did NOT find my state required book work. First off, again, this guy does NOT know the law as if he did he would understand that there is a process that the state requires to be followed. Again more shadey operations. I intend to call the state and make sure they iunderstand what happened and how this owner told me I would not need to return so the book work would not need to be reprocessed, Luckily when I was in the store I made a recording of every word immediately after being told they could not find my paperwork which recorded the time I was there and the comments made as well as another situation the owner accused me of. Visited on 01/02/2016. First off, they do have a very good selection of firearms both new and used. Prices are fairly competitive with other dealers in the area. They seem weak in the ammunition and accessory areas, not much to select from. Now what I found distressing was the lack of oversite on the firearms on the display floor. There are signs posted telling you to show your FOID before handling firearms, but when I tried to show someone, I could not get anyone's attention in order to do so. Granted they were busy, but still there should have been someone dedicated for this purpose. So as a good citizen, I did not handle any firearms even though I wanted to. I did witness folks come in and proceed to the rifle racks and handle the rifles without showing their FOID. I was quite taken aback that no one approached them to correct this problem. I mentioned to one individual that they needed to show a FOID and was told that it wasn't a big deal here. If this is true then I see problems down the road for Marengo Guns. I do hope it is not so. read more

I to make know they need to make money and I was willing to take $100 off book value on a lightly used gun in excellent condition. I was offered 1/2 of the guns book value. This was second time trying to make trade in with same results. It was an insult to a persons intelligence. Will never set foot in their business again or recommend them to anyone. Very low prices on the handguns as competitive as you can get in regards to their price point. Selection is great as well. Full inventory on the wall safe and securely attached similar to that at a gun show. Allow the customer to manipulate the weapon without having to ask the employees each and every time to "see the gun". I would give the place Five star however after putting a deposit and going to pick up a firearm. I noticed a small scratch on the frame and I pointed it out to the clerk who attempted to remove the little scuff on the frame but couldn't and then he told me that any firearm that I buy is going to have something on it and then once I use it going to have more stuff on it. I realize their are tools and will have wear on them however I would like to be the person causing the wear. I would have been completely satisfied if not for that. read more
