Jim is kind of a crazy guy, the kind of crazy that you can become fond of. He has an ascerbic wit can be lovingly sarcastic and has his own way of doing things. He is very knowledgeable and helped me find what I (at least what he thought) I needed. He did educate me on the things that I needed to know. The price I paid wasn't cheap, but I didn't pay rip-off prices that some are charging due to gun and ammo shortages (God help us if Biden gets elected). My wife and I came away, after background checks, with a Colt Lightweight Defender 9mm and a 1956 Colt Woodsman .22 caliber and ammo and other thoughtful gear to clean and maintain them. It's worth noting he won't sell you ammo if you haven't purchased a gun from him. He will continue to sell you ammo afterwards. I did not check his prices as I prefer to buy it from him rather than wait in line at a store even if I might pay a little extra. Unlike other places that try to just unload inventory, he will help you pick out your first firearm that suits your budget and needs as well as give you pointers on firearm handling and cleaning. Small range close to home is probably the only pro. As for cons.... poor range lighting, ammo is way overpriced, range fee for an hour only is a little steep, no climate controlled lanes, either too hot or too cold to shoot depending on the season, targets are overpriced, its basically a last resort range to go to. I called up Jim and he knew my type right away. We settled on a time for me to come by so we could talk. I explained what my needs were (home defense) and we worked through his system of selecting the perfect gun. No up-selling on fancy sights, no salesman pitches, just logical and efficient selection of the perfect firearm. I ended up staying over 2 hours talking guns, ammo, safety, you name it. Jim knows everything there is to know about guns and has a story for everything. We got the paperwork squared away and I came back 3 days later to pick it up. I ended up staying another 2 hours while Jim showed me how to field strip and clean the gun, how to load magazines, and answer every question I had. I don't know a single other business that gives this much attention to the customer. Jim truly has a passion for it. It also helps he's ex-military, ex-law enforcement, and has shot everything with a trigger. WoW! I just got off the phone with Dean. I wanted to transfer a pistol that was purchased elsewhere. He was very interested in what I wanted to transfer in and once he found out what it was, he told me: "why would he transfer it in when he sells one there!" This is NOT the way to do business! I was in the market for a new home defense shotgun. I found the gun I wanted, A Mossberg 500 Persuader, at Gat Guns. They wanted $450 for the firearm, plus fees. I looked online to find it on a website for $260, all in. The catch when buying one online, is that you have to have it shipped to a licensed FFL dealer. It is illegal to have it shipped to your home. I called the local gun shops and they each wanted $110 for receiving the gun and doing the transfer; they basically said that I should just buy it there. Nah, I think Ill save the $200 and find somewhere else to do the transfer. Enter Midwest Shooter's Supply. Found it thru the cheaperthandirt! camping and outdoor supply website. The company is just Jim, and he runs a licensed legit transfer out of his beautiful home in Libertyville. He made the process very easy for me and best of all, charges only $27.50 for the FFL transfer. I saved over $150 on the shotgun by going through Jim. You have the gun shipped there, go there, fill out paperwork, and come back again 24hours later after passing bg check and getting approved by state police. Couldn't have been easier. Not to mention Jim is a really nice, genuine guy. Also, bad guys need not apply, the guy is ex military and ex LE, and is still jacked as hell. I purchased a pistol from Jim last November. After firing over 600 rounds on visits to my range, the pistol slide latch broke. I called Jim to have it repaired. Jim asked me to bring it over. I thought he would send it out for repair and I expected to see the pistol in a few weeks. WRONG! So on August 21, 2014 my son and I went to see Jim. Jim greeted us with his usual smile and while we were there, Jim called his supplier and had a NEW replacement pistol sent in exchange, and it was delivered to him the next morning.
