Diego is back! Maria Bonita, on Hotel Street, just Ewa of Nuuanu, has been our favorite place to get good Mexican food in downtown Honolulu for many years. Back "in the day", you'd find me there at least once a week, sitting at the table by the window, dining on great food. It's been closed for a while, but we've periodically checked to see if it was going to re-open. A month ago, we saw new menus posted on the windows and a building permit. We walked past a day ago and saw the "Open" sign and stopped in to find out what was happening. Staffing was the issue, something that's affected many companies in the post-COVID era. Anyway, I ordered my "off the menu" Chicken Enchilada Plate with Mole sauce, something Diego has made for me from time to time. Wow, it's better than ever! Two plump enchiladas filled with chicken meat, topped with shredded lettuce, cheese, sour cream ... All swimming in Diego's wonderful mole sauce. Refried beans and Spanish rice on the side and a container of hot sauce ... Simply perfection! A co-worker ordered a Chimichanga with shredded beef, a la carte. It was huge and well presented. We're so happy to see Diego back in action ... Now, good Mexican food is just 5 minutes from our office. It's takeout only right now, but Diego said he has plans to re-open the dining room for patrons to enjoy his food on premises. Highly recommended! read more

I'm trying to put into words with how to describe my first experience with a place I heard about, but haven't ate there. This being Maria Bonita. So...truth be told, the last place I could remember eating Mexican food was last year. Oddly enough, my experience at Maria Bonita lived up to the expectations. I didn't think that I'd enjoy their food after this review. So...I ordered their California Burrito (Yeah, surprisingly, that was also the last thing I ate at that time), no cheese or sour cream, and I have to say, after the first few bites, I was a little surprised with the flavor inside. I truthfully didn't expect it to have jalapeños inside there among the amount of roasted vegetables in the burrito. I didn't think it was that spicy initially, but after a few minutes, it started to kind of creep up just a bit. The heat, it wasn't like...'in your face' or anything. It was more like a slow build-up. But I didn't mind it personally after it dissipated a bit. For a small place in the Chinatown area that specializes in Mexican food, I'd say Maria Bonita delivers in all facets. Definitely would come back there for their California Burrito again. I highly recommend this place if you wanted to eat some good Mexican food without paying so much for the food. 10 out of 10. read more

For years, my former colleagues would rave about this place and for years, I wouldn't go. It was until most recent times where I relocated offices that gave me an opportunity to venture into this cute little restaurant for some delicious Mexican food! After ordering a chili verde wet burrito plate from here, I knew this was the place to fufill my Mexican food craving. The burrito was quite enormous and was filled with a lot of savory ingredients. The carnitas were cooked perfectly and provided a crunchy texture that matched well with the overall dish. I could have stopped eating halfway to save me from the perils of the afternoon crash, but I was too mesmerized by how every ingredient of the dish matched perfectly well to give you the perfect flavor profile. I went back the following week to order a taco salad with asada but ordered ala carte instead of the plate to avoid the potential repeat of an afternoon post-lunch coma. Although your first thought would be "dang that's a lot of cheese" underneath all that cheese and sour cream lies a good amount of asada, beans, lettuce, cilantro, onions, and tomatoes. Again, mixed all together provides you a savory dish. The asada was decently seasoned and cooked well. It was a perfect amount to replenish your energy from the first half of your work day. Safe to say, I have become a fan of this cute little restaurant in Chinatown and wouldn't mind going back for another round. For both occasions of my visit were take out, but you do have a dining option available. It's quite small but its worth checking out. Ole! Today we're visiting Maria Bonita! It's been quite a while since we had some time to cruise around Chinatown, come to think of it, the last time we visited was pre-Covid! Since it was just the hubby and son with me today running an errand nearby, I walked over to see if Maria Bonita was open, because their wet burritos are seriously habit forming. Luckily for us, the shop was empty and still open for about 40 more minutes. The owner was very welcoming and invited us right in! We placed our orders and were seated right away, with waters, salsa and chips delivered within a few minutes. This visit featured: Complimentary salsa and chips - the chips are thin and crispy, perfect texture and taste! The salsa is vibrant and flavorful, a bit spicy-hot for us, but so yummy we couldn't stop! Wet Burrito ($16, entree) - a hefty burrito filled with your choice of meat (shredded chicken, shredded beef, Carne Asada, Carnitas Pork or Ground Beef) or Grilled Veggies, and rice, beans, lettuce, onions and cilantro, smothered in a red enchilada sauce and lots of melted cheeeese... with rice and beans on the side too! If you're a smaller eater, an ala carte option is also available ($13, no rice and beans). Hubby and I split a Carnitas burrito entree, and my son had half of a Carne Asada burrito entree. It is seriously large enough to feed two people! The meat is tender and juicy, vegetables fresh and crisp, and each bite was smile inducing... When I have eaten the food from this food truck I am always amazed at how delicious the food is. Diego is the talented owner and chef and he makes us feel like we are his most important customers every time. I get the enchiladas and my partner orders burritos. Amazing flavors in everything. Prices are fair for huge servings. The only downside is Maria Bonita's lunch wagon is only around on Friday and Saturday evenings. There is free parking in the Hardware Hawaii small lot adjacent yo where the food truck parks. We plan to order two dinner plates each this weekend by phone an hour or so before heading over to pick up and pay. That way we can be happy enjoying Maria Bonita's lunch wagon meals several times in the week. read more

This review is a long time coming. The Maria Bonita restaurant is our best and most authentic choice for a Mexican taqueria, that my wife and I, found on the Island. Sort of makes sense to me, being that you would find it in downtown; that's usually where the best food tends to be. While my wife (Mexican/Salvadorian) and I (mixed race) lived in Oahu from 2015 - 2019 and would always miss/ crave good authentic Mexican food. My wife cooks a mean Mexican meal but even she had her cravings for a good taqueria. It was our luck of fulfilling our cravings and finding Maria Bonita while walking around during a festival (I don't remember which festival, there were many hosted in downtown.) Not a large menu but we enjoyed every bite. The carne asada and chicken in the tacos had so much flavor and just the right spice. The rice was on point with the savory flavor. We will be making a return visit after four years and look forward to seeing if our love for Maria Bonita will stand with time. read more

Wanted to support local so came to check out this Mexican place! I would definitely recommend good Mexican food for a great price. Parking is street and meter anywhere you can in downtown. It's off of hotel street. The food came out really fast and the portions are very large! Mom loved the flautas and I got a burrito we both had leftovers! Takeout meals on two occasions at Maria Bonita on S. Hotel St. I've been satisifed in general with both meals. Chinatown has & is undergoing much needed change with an influx of new businesses over the past few years but there are still pockets of seediness even on a busy street such as Hotel. If you can get past the exterior and adjacent businesses this is a nice Mexican restaurant. The interior is clean, air-conditioned and well decorated with paintings and such on the walls. Service for takeaway has been good. The first meal was a wet chile verde burrito. Excellent. On Friday night, decided on a beef quesadilla plate with chips & salsa. Bit on the salty side but alright. I love supporting small restaurants and businesses. I truly believe they're the spice of life. So, having found this gem down the street from my office on Oneawa St in Kailua, I decided to walk over and partake of some amazing Mexican food. This truck is parked between Goodwill and Timmy T's sandwich shop. I ordered a flautas plate with pork, and the California burrito plate for myself and my other half. Diego is an absolutely amazing man. 22 years of culinary skills making Mexican delights. The flautas are Heaven. I enjoyed every flaky bite. So perfectly balanced with the toppings. Little pieces of potato add texture to the beans and rice. I'm addicted already. The portion was large so I have lunch for tomorrow. Yay! The California burrito is a little spicy and very large. They're open! Not sure why I thought they were closed, but nice to see they are surviving. Owner and menu has changed couple times but seems to be back to what it was. Mexican food is good enough...and is pretty good for Hawaii. Ordered the taco salad with no shell, rice, or beans. Haha, that meant just lettuce, tomato, carne and sour cream. But that's basically what I wanted. Chalula'ed and salsa'ed it and it hit the spot. Meat is typical carne with a little gristle which I love. Hubs orderd a chimichanga that was bigger than my bicep...my biceps aren't very big though, so maybe a bad comparison. Coworker had a smothered burrito about the same size. This hole in the wall restaurant has the best Mexican food in Chinatown (and Kailua where his food truck is near Hawaii Hardware). I had a California burrito and it was really superb! We pride ourselves on trying and usually loving "hole-in-the-wall" gems, but c'mon. Gave it a chance even after I heard the microwave being used 2 minutes after our order was taken. Haven't been here in a few months. Shop got updated with AC which is a huge plus. We'd normally stop in and it'd be like a sauna in there with just ceiling fans. Gotta be comfy when eating. On to the food. Chef told me he has some specials he put together. I landed on the Sopas with chorizo. Plate came packed with 2 sopas covered with veggies, cheese, and sour cream. Top that off with a small serving of beans and rice. Beans and rice had lots of flavor. The sopas was light and soft. Chorizo was good with some bits of crispy texture which I like. I recommend this place for mexican food to my downtown business friends. No place in town as good as Maria's for mexican. read more

This is the closest thing to truly authentic Mexican food in HNL! The staff is super accommodating and nice! They seem to have the same mini corn tortillas every place has high is significantly smaller than the ones on the mainland. They are generous in the filling of the traditional street tacos. This is much more filling than other places I've tried even in downtown. They are not quick to make the food but that is not a bad thing. I came upon this place bc a coworker recommended it. And. I really, really wanted to like this place. Most hole-in-the-wall Mexican joints are fabulous. This one was a let down for a couple of reasons. Positives: free chips and salsa when you dine in, wide menu selection Downers: waited over an hour for 2 lunch plates. Unacceptable. No apology, just an awkward "Finally. That's what happens when there's a big order in front of you" as he brought out our food. The food was good, other than the meat being salty. My favorite food here, the carne asada torta, tasted great today, but it seemed like it was 30-40% smaller than it used to be. My wife had the chile relleno, and it was the thinnest and smallest we've ever seen. The rice and beans were half their former size. The chips and salsa used to be free, and now cost $2.50 for a small serving of chips and a relatively larger portion of salsa. The salsa was excellent, and tasted even better than it used to. The chashier mistook my order of a torta with a tostada, and I had to wait something like 45 minutes for my food (my wife's took 40 minutes). The restaurant was packed at 11:35! The server put down the tostada and said here's your chile relleno. She apparently knew nothing of the food she was serving! My former favorite downtown Mexican restaurant left me disappointed again. I patronized the restaurant from the time it opened until today. I won't be back. read more

Located in China town, so it's all street parking. We called in an order and they told us 10-15min, after arriving 10min later we waited another 25min. The food is fresh, big portioned, and reasonably priced. This place is one of the few authentic Mexican restaurants in Hawaii. read more

"The unsung hero of Hotel Street." - Rob M. Maria Bonita is that restaurant you pass by in a dodgy neighborhood because the exterior isn't all that great. You never decide to give it a chance because you're trying to run away from the Chinatown Crazies. Well, it's time to be brave. LOL. Located on Hotel Street, next to a few bars, a yoga studio and across the street from another taco spot is Maria Bonita's and a large sign that says Authentic Mexican Food. You might think false advertising but you're false. Don't knock it till you try it. The restaurant is fairly small and can seat about 20-25 people. You can order at the register, from what a nice sweet old man named Diego. Then patiently wait for that golden moment where he comes by and serves you your well deserved chips & salsa, creamy guac and your delicious, crunchy, warm, pork carnitas tacos with the perfect beans and rice in all of the land! I don't event think I need to say anymore but if you're saying Hawaii doesn't have a good Mexican food scene, it's because you're not traveling in the right places. I love you, you're welcome. I had the wet burrito. The place is located downtown. It took a little long, around 25 minutes to make my lunch. I don't think a burrito should take that long. Oh well. The rice and beans were generic tasting. It is just a filler. The burrito was okay. It wasn't my favorite. The meat was okay. But nothing popped and the meal was kind of forgettable. After an amazing shopping experience at Owens & Co. I had 35 minutes left on my meter and decided to take a lap around the block. I've been here once before and I was jogging my memory trying to recall my last experience here. I placed an order for an Ala Cart Chicken Wet burrito with verde sauce ($12). ... I check my phone and my timer says I have 7 minutes left with no sign of my burrito. At the 6 minute mark my burrito appears along with a To Go order for a woman who walked in seconds before. Note to self: order by phone and come pick it up. The burrito was just okay. The food is excellent! The portion is enough for two meals and it is very tasty. I had the chimichanga which was loaded! Be sure to pre order because it is a one man operation. After marketing in Chinatown we walked down on Hotel Street in hopes of having lunch before the downtown crowd hit. Oh, I should admit that I was actually trying to steer my husband away from suggesting a Chinese lunch. As we walked down Hotel Street, we were tempted by brick oven pizzas, Korean Fusion, Asian Fusion, American, Japanese Yakitori and Mexican. Oh yeah...the thought of authentic chile rellenos, enchiladas, burritos or tacos drew us to Maria Bonita's open door. Ah, but at 1045, they weren't open yet so we just waited outside like two begging dogs scratching at the door until 1100. We were greeted by a friendly and smiling man, Diego, who we found out was the owner. Both Diego and his mother immigrated from Acapulco, Mexico many years ago and have stayed in Hawai'i since. Diego has been at this location for the past 15 years and named it after his mother who inspired him in cooking authentic Mexican cuisine and the restaurant business. Service was efficient and casual. We placed our order at the counter after perusing the menu board then took a seat. As we waited for our orders, I thought that we'd be uncomfortable since there was no air-conditioning but only a couple of room fans running in this small restaurant. But, not so, I think the high ceiling and open door allowed for comfortable air flow. Diego brought out a bowl of house made tortilla chips and salsa in a plastic molcajete. Whoa..the first dip and taste of the salsa was indeed spicy but in a "good way" as I wasn't expecting it. As we continued munching on the chips and salsa, the heat subsided. The chips and salsa are complimentary when you dine in. FOOD: - Chile Rellenos plate was served with rice, beans and shredded lettuce and fresh cut tomatoes. The chile was tender and stuffed with cheese. Its egg batter coating was light and its texture led me to believe that the chile relleno was pan fried rather than deep fried. I wished that the shredded cheese that was atop the chile relleno was melted but nonetheless, the generous portion was delicious and filling. $11.99 -Street tacos (lengua)filled with beef tongue. The street tacos were at least 3" diameter but was mounded with tender cooked beef tongue. The tongue was so tender that it seemed to melt in the mouth good. There were fresh lime wedges that we squeezed over each taco which seemed to "brighten" the flavors and complement the fresh cilantro. I think, er, know that I could've eaten these 3 tacos by myself. $9.00 Most of the other street tacos cost $7 for a plate of 3. Given the flavor of the beef tongue, we'll be back for more of the other taco options. There's a beverage refrigerator from which you can choose your Jarritos brand soft drink, iced teas, sodas or sports drink to accompany your meal. You pay at the register/counter after eating. Parking can be an issue since Maria Bonita is located in downtown Honolulu but you'll probably be able to find metered street parking or park in any one of Chinatown's Municipal Parking Lots. CONCLUSION: Maria Bonita is an authentic Acapulco-style Mexican restaurant. They do get busy so if you're pressured for time, you should call in your order and take it to go. Just be aware that the restaurant is small, dimly lit and not air-conditioned. It's not much to look at but it's comfortable and clean. However, the flavors and "loving" care that Diego and his staff put into making the deliciousness that is served is worth coming back for more. read more

Had a client downtown who said, "Let's have Mexican." We had seen this place a couple of weeks ago while dining at Topped, so we decided to give it a try. It's definitely not a pretentious place at all, but the food was really good. It's not an attempt at "gourmet" or "upscale" Mexican, nor is it overly Americanized Mexican, but it was more like something you would get if you had lunch at someone's house. Straightforward and delicious homemade food. I had the wet chile verde burrito, which was marked as spicy, but wasn't very spicy (and I'm NOT a spicy person) at all. It was quite delicious, with perfectly cooked carnitas (you know... when they let it get a little crispy on the edges). MS had the rojo (red) wet burrito (also with carnitas), which she was kind enough to let me taste and hers was also quite delicious. The prices are reasonable, the portions are huge, and they have horchata, which is always a plus! read more

In my quest for the best lingua taco on the island I discovered this hole-in-the-wall diner. Tucked away in the midst of Honolulu's business district and China Town/Hotel Street Maria Bonita serves a delicious serving of Mexico. The reason for my visit today was their lingua(tongue) tacos and lingua was what I had, along with a glass of horchata. Shortly after ordering, three mini, doubled layered soft tortillas arrived with a decent amount of shredded meat, topped with diced onions and cilantro and a wedge of lime to give it that special tang. There was enough meat on each tortilla to actually make six tacos. The meat was moist and tender, seasoned perfectly, complimented by the fresh tortillas and veggies. Their menu has a good variety of choices; from normal items such as tacos and burritos, as well as the not so well known items such as Lingua. Prices were comparable to other Mexican places. Our food was delivered to our tables within 5 minutes and the service was good. Parking can be found either in the surrounding municipal parking lots, or street parking on the adjacent streets. Their hours cater to the businesses in the area, with longer hours Thursday-Saturday. So, if you're a daring soul and want to step out of the box, step into Maria Bonita's and give the tongue a try. I've passed this place many times since I work downtown but never ventured in, as it's located next to a bar with some questionable/sketchy looking people congregating outside the bar. I went here for lunch today with a co worker who swears by this place as the most authentic Mexican food that he's had. I ordered the mahi mahi tostada with rice & refried beans & horchata. My co worker had a shredded beef chimichanga. We sat down & were given glasses of water and chips & salsa to munch on while we waited for our food, which was brought out after about 15-20 minutes. My mahi mahi was nicely seasoned and tender, cut into bite sized pieces, was on top of a crispy corn tortilla with cheese, sour cream, lettuce & tomato pieces. I'm glad that our order taker suggested rice & beans with the tostada, which went well together & filled up my stomach. The horchata was good, not too sweet, nice cinnamon flavor. My co worker's shredded beef chimichanga was pretty good, huge plate though. We have slight food coma now. Service is quick & friendly. There are about 6 tables that sit 4 individuals per table. I had a chance to eat here for lunch one day with a friend. Convenience was a factor since it was walking distance from where we were. We dined in and I don't believe they have air conditioning at this location. The cashier/order taker was new and was having a little trouble, but no big deal. There were a few tables of people eating (since it was lunchtime) and a few people came and went for the to go orders. FYI....They have Sidral Mundet (Mexican carbonated apple cider soda) which I haven't had in a while....yummy. My friend ordered a chimichanga and I had a taco salad. While we waited for our order, the front counter guy brought us chips and salsa which is a nice touch. Normally, here in the islands, everything costs money, so free chips and salsa....I consider a win. My buddy's chimi arrived and it was fat! Not the longest burrito I have seen, but the sheer girth of it was impressive. He said it was good and polished it off. My taco salad wasn't nearly as large but still very good. It had the right combination of ingredients inside, and the taste was nice. Good contrast of the crispy shell, warm meat and beans, and cold lettuce, tomato, and cheese. You know how mom said to never judge a book by its cover? Well listen to mom and judge after you ate at this place. I'll be honest and admit that I judged this place by its exterior. But hey! I'm sure everyone else who works in Downtown did! Maria's is a totally hole in a wall with a sketchy bar next door. The food was amazing! For about $10 I got a huge plate! My combo consisted of an enchilada, beef taco, Mexican rice and refried beans. Kanak attack was written all over that plate. Service was great and the guy at the counter was super friendly. He came around to refill water multiple times as well as clear away our dishes. I usually don't care for Mexican food, but this place was really good. So listen to mom. Great Mexican food but parking is blah! Street parking is a must but if you need to find parking there's a private lot on Nuuanu near Nimitz, but kinda pricey. There's also a parking structure on Smith and Nimitz which is cheap but the spaces are small. Okay now for the food. The Chimichanga is huge!!! It's enough for 2 people to share. All kinds of different meat to choose from and comes with rice and refried beans. The Flautas, which come with 2 pieces, are my favorite though. Not as big as the Chimichanga and still enough to share with my wife and still feel the kanak attack after lol. Be aware, they are "temporarily closed". I ordered online and Square Pay accepted and processed the payment for my order. The text message I received from Square said that my order would be ready at 12:45 pm. So, I walked to the restaurant only to find that it was closed and there was a sign in the window that said "We closed temporarily. We will open again. We apologies (sp) for hte inconvenience. Thank you for your supporting. God Bless You. It is time for a break." I guess someone forgot to stop the online ordering process. I hope I am able to get a refund. So far, neither the restaurant or Square Pay has responded to my emails and texts and of course, there is no one at the restaurant to answer the phone, plus the recording says the voicemail has not been set up yet so I cannot leave a voice message. read more
