My mom and I saw Tony, the owner of Muze, 11/15/24. Asked for a balayage with dark roots. Unfortunately, my mom and I left with horrible, chunky highlights, with multiple different shades of blonde (brass, yellow and silver). I have silver streaks in the front of my hair, and half of the bleaching work is underdeveloped (brassy red color). It was worse than the photos - when he was first "done" with the work, there was no blending at the roots, which I requested he fixed. Photographed is it "fixed". This is the worst work I've had done in years. I came in with virgin hair, and left with hair at different levels of processing. He pulled the bleach out after 40 minutes. I've bleached my hair years ago and would always sit with it for at least 2 hours, so pulling it out so soon was just the stylist rushing. There are blotches of color that seems to have spilled in the wrong places. My mom and I have to go to a different salon, one with the experience to fix my hair and give me an actual balayage. I decided that I needed a change in my cut and color. Went to Yelp and looked up hair salons in Chelsea, came across Muze and read the reviews. I have short dark hair with blonde highlights. Jiro had wonderful reviews especially with short hair. I decided to make a change ,my blonde highlights were very brassy and I was unhappy. Went to Jiro and I am thrilled. She gave me a pixie cut a great color and highlights that I never thought I could have!and NO YELLOW!! Needless to say Jiro is my new hairdresser and I'm just thrilled. Artur has been my hairdresser for over 15 years now. I will say this, he has been the best of the best and when I found him I knew I will no longer be able to find another hairdresser like him. I moved to few states in that 15 years and I always came back just to see him. He has a great way of getting exactly what you want but without compromising your hair. I had dark brown hair and he was very upfront with me how we will go about that process. Every time I came up with something new he would know exactly how to deliver it. Worst hair salon ever. My hair was bleached for two days straight. Completely ruined the guy name Constantine blamed on the assistant for mixing the color wrong and asked me to come back the next day to fix it. I went back only to have my hair cut as the only solution for the extreme damage. My hair was so bad like a green jelly, his way of "fixing" was just chopping it. I spent almost a year trying to get a refund or even an apology but the owner was always " unavailable". She has no shame stealing money . Yes! your place ruined my hair and they apologized yet you choose to charge me for that and pretend you were always unavailable. I had to involve a lawyer after that but she keeps hiding like the thief she is. read more

I've been a client of this salon for 6 years and have spent thousands of dollars on services over those years. Today, after 6 years of using them, I experienced something that simply put is completely unacceptable in the service industry. At the end of a very unfriendly service by Axel, rushing through the hair color at top speed, he demonstratively told me that he has great news to share. When asked what that great news is, I was told by Axel that today is the last day he is servicing me because he feels very unappreciated. When I asked why that is so, he told me that I have missed by his account paying him some tips. He then proceeded to take out a notebook with handwritten accounting of what tips he feels he is missing, tallying up at the end the amount of tip he feels I owe him. I had to ask him how he came up with those numbers. He then felt obligated to give the already crazy situation more drama and rip out the piece of paper and hand it to me to keep for memory. It was a wild, gross ride that showed Axel's lack of hospitality in the service industry. It is also a very bad reflection on the salon itself for having someone who represents their brand and with his action, ruins their reputation. When you are in the service industry, there are a few hard and fast rules that apply: 1) the client is always right event when they are wrong or perceived to be wrong. 2) It takes a lot of energy and time to build a relationship and a split second to kill it. 3) every unhappy customer will touch at minimum another 20 potential clients (pre-internet numbers) and negative news spreads fast. Today, Axel killed the 6 year relationship I had with the salon. And to think, that if he had true hospitality bones, he could have handled this situation delicately, preserving the paying client and getting what he felt was due to him via his tip by simply saying to the client at the time of occurrence " Hey, maybe you forgot or something happened with the Venmo transfer..." Client would appreciate it as a reminder and totally acceptable as we are all hurried and work crazed, and tip would always happen and service provider would always be made whole. And most of all, Axel would have shown professionalism by leaving drama off the table. I would highly suggest that the salon owners gift Axel a great book of learning on hospitality because he needs a refresher on this very, very important topic. The book is called Unreasonable Hospitality. It is readily available on Amazon and would be a solid investment. As for this paying client, she does not appreciate being badgered during service by salon employee out loud and in writing and by being "fired" for perceived owed tips. That is the complete opposite of hospitality. read more

Not only is Axel a talented stylist he is really quick! He has me in and out of the salon with record timing since he knows I have no patience when getting my hair done. I cannot recommend this salon enough!! Everyone is super nice, friendly, and professional. Their prices are pretty decent, comparatively, and the value you get is worth it. I recommend scheduling appointments with Constantine, Jiro, or Marissa. Any of them are absolutely wonderful!! I came in and was immediately offered a beverage after stating that I had an appointment and was offered refills at least three times throughout my visit. I worked with Davide Marinelli who listened to my idea for my bayalage/ombre hair and worked with the leftover highlights that remained in my hair. Along with the dye job, he also put a glaze in my hair to seal in the color and trimmed my hair for free as I was a first time client. Davide listened to my concerns and brought my idea to life even though I wasn't quite sure what I wanted. A big plus was that the dye job looks great on both my straight hair and pops even more when I curl it. Axel Cruz is wonderful and does a fantastic job, but I have had negative interactions with the owner Angela. I made an appointment online the night before and had to cancel, so I tried to do so online but the cancel button wasn't working. So I called the next day and spoke with the owner - she gave me a hard time for cancelling, and honestly it was very off putting. The stylist Axel is awesome, but the owner is not welcoming nor flexible, hence my 3 stars. The only reason I would continue going to this place (which is unlikely) is because of Axel. read more

I asked an out of state Wella teacher for a recomendation in the city and glad he suggested this spot. I've had great experience with Wella and only discovered it somewhat recently. Alex is great!!, super knowledgeable about hair color matching one's skin tone, and he has very friendly and calm demeanor and will chat you up or let you relax in silence depending on what your into, which is nice. I've been getting my hair colored and highlighted for about 5 years in NYC and no one has ever gotten it right. This is the first time I'm truly satisfied with not only my highlights, but the cut is perfect and my hair feels so healthy! He took the time to listen to my wants and needs, and exceeded my expectations. Also, he was able to accomplish everything in a timely manner. In the past, I've had to sit with my head in a sink for 3-4 hours since I have dark curly hair and it is hard to lighten. With Alex the whole process, including cut and blow out, took about 2 hours. Igor Santos did my hair and makeup for my wedding, and I now trust the man with my life. He styled my hair into these gorgeous cascading waves that stayed put all night and did an impeccable job with my makeup. He is incredibly talented at what he does, and he is also kind, funny, and totally unflappable, which is exactly the sort of person you want around you on your wedding day. When my brother, who was practicing to play a song at the reception, broke his guitar strap, Igor quietly stepped in and MACGYVERED HIM A NEW ONE out of the strap from his own makeup bag so my brother would be able to perform. I now go to Igor for regular cuts at Muze, where he makes sure I am well supplied with wine and gives me haircuts that earn me compliments from friends, coworkers, and strangers on the subway. I was nervous about going shorter but I really wanted to try a bob, so we talked for a bit and looked at some pictures until he figured out exactly what I wanted and what would look good on me, and he gave me a gorgeous, easy-to-style wavy lob that makes me feel beautiful every day. Tony cut off double what I asked for (9 inches instead of 5!) and thinned my hair. Left crying ;( worst haircut I've ever had and left looking worse than when I arrived. It'll take 3-6 months to get back what he took liberties with. I tried to tell him multiple times during the cut that he was cutting and thinning too much - he laughed and said in 9 years he's never had a customer disagree with his artistic approach. He's arrogant and the place is no longer what it once was. Take your business elsewhere where if you're shelling out $100+ anyways you can get a good haircut that won't leave you sobbing AND insulted. read more

For the first half of my appointment I'll give Muze 5 stars and 1 for the second half. I found Muze via a Gilt deal for a half head of highlights. I was super excited about my appointment because of its high reviews and reputation. From the moment I walked in the woman behind the reception desk was very friendly and attentive. Right away she asked me if I wanted a beverage and made me feel very welcome. My highlights were done by Jiro and came out wonderful and they look great. The downfall came after the highlights were applied and essentially I was "left." Jiro never came back to ask me if I liked my color or thank me for my business... Never came over to check once how my hair turned out. The woman who washed out my color then handed me a hair dryer and a brush and said "here." I was fully aware a blow dry did not come with the Gilt deal but I wasn't given any direction of where to go or what to do just handed a blow dryer... I blow dried my hair for about 15 mins thinking someone might ask me if I liked my hair or to see how it turned out for god sakes... Or thank me for my business... I had thought maybe they'd want my business in the future and offer me a business card or a "color card to mark my color formula if I came back in the future... I'm not sure if that's the normal treatment or if I received low class treatment for my Gilt deal. My advice is that if they aren't going to treat Gilt customers with the same respect then they shouldn't offer them. read more

I came in for a cut with Mona because I found photos of curly haircuts she'd done on her Instagram account. The cut itself is OK. Not the best I've ever had, but she did create lots of layers that help me achieve more volume with my very fine, very curly hair. I don't love it, but I can work with it until it grows out. The problem is that she's working in a salon that very much caters to women with straight or wavy hair, NOT curls. They have the wrong kind of towels, dryers and products. I should at least be happy with the way my hair looks as I'm walking out of the salon and I wasn't. I had a wedding to get ready for, otherwise I would have stayed to ask them to wash all the gunk out of my hair. The woman who washed my hair used a terrycloth towel to blot the extra water from my hair. Huge mistake. Those kinds of towels create frizz! I wish they had used a microfiber one instead. Because I have fine hair, I have to use products that won't weigh down my hair. My curls will get plump and bouncy as long as I stick to a moisturizer with light gel and DON'T touch my hair while it's drying. Once I got back to the chair where Mona was going to style my hair, she blotted my hair with the towel some more (hello, more frizz) and proceeding to section my hair and apply THREE different products to each layer of my hair -- none of them intended for curly hair -- twisting it in fat sections and going against my natural curl pattern. My hair's already plenty curly. Then I discover that the whole place only has TWO dryers. Not hooded dryers. Orbiting infrared dryers. I got 20 min. under one of those before Mona finished drying my hair with a diffuser on a handheld dryer. She kept putting her hands in my hair -- more frizz and loss of definition. When she was done, my curls weren't defined at all. I think it's great that Mona has decided to get into cutting and styling curly hair. But Muze really isn't set up to cater to curly hair and I think she needs more practice before charging $100+ for a cut. Towards the end of the visit, she told me about a client of her's who brings in her own products and asks to be left to style her own hair. For the kind of money I paid, there's no way in hell I should have to bring my own products and style my own hair. I'll be taking my curls elsewhere when it's time for another cut. read more

I really wanted to like this place as I've been looking for a new hairstylist, but sadly my experience was just too mixed to warrant returning. I purchased a Gilt City voucher for $110 to have a cut with a senior stylist. When I made my appointment, I gave all the voucher information and made sure to note that I had purchased the more expensive voucher (since there were two options), so that my appointment would be made with the right person. All seemed fine. At 9pm that night I received a call from someone named Alex who told me that the person I spoke to earlier had not taken down the voucher number correctly, so they needed to get it from me again. Even though I thought it was inappropriate to be calling me that late, I gave the voucher number again. He then asked me how much I paid for the voucher, so I again confirmed that I paid $110 and should be seeing a senior stylist. You can see where this is going. When I arrived at the salon the next day, I was asked for a third time to provide my voucher number, which I did, even though I was becoming annoyed by how many times they seemed to need it. The cut I received was fine - the stylist was really friendly, listened to what I wanted, and gave me what I asked for. I have zero complaints with the service she gave me, but it definitely wasn't a $220 cut (which is the list price that Gilt City advertised). When I went to pay, I asked the guy at the front how much my stylist normally charges for a cut, so that I could tip her appropriately. His reply: $120. So I paid $110 for a cut that would normally cost $10 more?? I wouldn't normally be so annoyed by this, but I was asked THREE TIMES to provide my voucher number, confirm how much I paid, etc. etc. I obviously should have seen a senior stylist, and I specifically purchased the more expensive voucher because I was LOOKING for someone amazing to cut my hair. Either the front desk staff is totally inept (which I think is the case here), or they're knowingly taking advantage of people. Regardless, it's simply not acceptable for a salon that claims to be "high end" to be this unorganized and disrespectful to their customers. In the end, I tried not to make a big deal about the error, but the front desk guy quickly became evasive and tried to tell me that my stylist had "maybe recently raised her prices" and maybe that's why there was confusion. He told me he would take my number, figure out the problem, and call with a resolution. It's been over two weeks and I never received a call, and I won't be back, nor will I recommend this salon to others. read more
